We just left this place and the food is AMAZING, great sangrias and Key Lime Pie is really one of the best I have ever tried, the only thing this place is lacking is costumer service, the server we had Wes was actually great, however there were a couple of people working here who should have either more training on costumer service or find another job. There was a lady at the very beginning who instead of asking how many for lunch, she said "there is not stone crab and we only have two appetizers left" then I asked do you have lunch and she responded very sarcastic "of course we have a menu" . After finishing our delicious lunch, there was another server (not our server) who picked up a menu my son dropped on the floor , so my older son said, oh that's my little brothers and the guy very rude answered: then why he didn't pick it up?? I cant believe a grown man is talking to a kid costumer like this. I am very disappointed about this, specially when we drove all the way from Miami to come to this place. read more

Amazing food!!! The last few times I've been to Key Largo couldn't leave without eating at this quaint little hidden gem! From the homemade bread with delicious home made Jalapeño jelly to the mushroom stuffed with crab and churrasco with side of AAMAZING sweet potatoe casserole, this place is definitely an A+ on my list. My experience was one hit and one miss. We ate here our first night in Key Largo, a Sunday. The place was dead. The staff was attentive and friendly. We had fried alligator bites as an appetizer (not on the menu, but really tasty with a nice sauce). I had shrimp and tomatoes which was delicious. We left feeling very satisfied and knew we wanted to return before our trip was over. Our last night in Key Largo, a Saturday, we thought we'd end our trip at Ballyhoo's. We arrived about 7:30, and the place was busy. We'd been in the Keys a week, and I figured I'd better try conch before I left. There was no conch fritter on the menu, so I ordered conch meunière. I didn't like it, but I've never had conch before. We ordered our main meals and waited. And waited. After about an hour, our server finally explained that one of our dishes had mistakenly been given to another table, so it might be another 10 minutes. She told us we would get free dessert (we don't usually eat dessert). After another 10 minutes or so, I decided I just wasn't really all that hungry anymore. We had an early day the next day, and I was getting tired. We tried to flag someone down to tell them just to forget it, but we didn't manage to get anyone's attention before the food finally arrived. The server offered to box it up (no, thanks, it's our last night, it would be wasted) again offered free dessert (no, thanks, we just want to eat out of here). We got a half-baked apology and our bill. $30 for drinks and a chewy conch appetizer. I was supremely disappointed, not only because we had previously had a positive experience, but mostly because we had wanted to end our vacation with a great meal. That didn't happen. read more

My last time leaving the lower keys i saw a few cops parked here and thought to myself, if local cops eat here, it has to be worth coming back. So i promised myself i will go next time im down. I looked online and saw they offered my favorite dish from New Orleans Char-boiled Oysters. 100% it was time to go Ballyhoo's, I ordered of course the Oysters which were great but nothing compared to the new orleans ones. I ordered the All you can eat snow crabs. the first batch was good and quick. The second batch was by far the BEST order of crab legs ive ever had. But it was isolated to that batch of mine. all the other stuff was ok. THE JALAPENO muffins were incredible. I over stuffed my face with the snow crab so didint get to really enjoy the Key Lime pie (i usually am a fan of KLP) but i did taste it and it was awesome, i recommend splitting the sides as they are hearty portions. Nichole our waitress guided us through s great meal. Who ever heard of grilled avocado? Outstanding!!!! We then enjoyed the gumbo soup. We really did not need the volcano Joe salad but u could not resist. It was very untrusting and great flavor. My wife had the skillet mahi and I had the yellowfin. We then had an argument over shirt had the best entree. We could not resist what ewe found was the best key lime pie either of us had ever had. Great!!! A bitter disappointment. Very expensive and poor quality food. The website says to expect $11-30, but the two main courses that we chose were $36 and $40, never mind the cost of starters, drinks, coffee etc. I don't mind paying top dollar for top quality, but this was far from it! The conch starter contained bits of coral or shell, not sure which, and was barely edible. The main course of a mixed fish platter was $40 - 3 shrimps, 1 small scallop, a piece of unidentifiable white fish and a lobster tail with chips all slapped on a plate with no attempt at presentation. Surly and largely unhelpful serving staff too. Total bill including 1 glass of wine each was over $100. Avoid this place! read more

Excellent food. Our waitress Wanda redeemed the restaraunt experience for us. After a week of surly sloppy service in the lower keys including a female blond bartender at Robbies in islamorada, who is incidentally the first bartender I intentionally stiffed for crummy service, Wanda was brilliantly attentive and kind. I understand they make most of their condiments inhouse, and they know their craft. Ballyhoos may not look like a mom and pop place, but it certainly is. Im a weary aggravated traveler with compromised and bitter expectations, but I appreciate the food, service and general experience of the place. And tip my hat one more time to Wanda. read more

Enjoyed everything here, had the grilled cheese and tomatoe soup. Ate evey crumb and about licked the bowl, wasn't expecting it to be so good. We were staying close by and wanted a break from the afternoon heat and went in for lunch. It was quiet...seemed like an authentic "local" joint. The food was fresh, ALL home made. I had the BLT with sweet potato fries, my husband had tomato soup and a chop salad with their buttermilk fried chicken fingers. You wouldn't think of soup in the heat, but it was wonderful, comfort food - tasty with basil infused oil. The ketchup was HOMEMADE! Good service, good price, good food. read more

Everything was delicious from start to finish...from the stuffed mushroom appetizer to the key lime pie! There is a separate vegetarian menu which almost made my daughter cry (being a vegetarian). The fish dishes we ordered were flavorful and cooked perfectly. The little ones loved the mac 'n cheese. Service was friendly and helpful. We had family members in from Las Vegas and they wanted to try the local seafood and since Ballyhoo was offering the "all you can eat stone crabs" we thought we would try the restaurant. The stone crabs were served frozen, their "world famous oysters" were bad and not safe to eat. When we asked the manager if he could either replace them with something else or take it off our bill he refused either one. He had no managerial skills what so ever. Poor service, cold sides of sub-par quality, awful key lime pie (custard tasted like a mouthful of sugar, no lime flavor, and the merengue was even more sugary - YUCK!!). Very, very disappointing. We stop here every year on our way down to Key West for the MOTM. Have to have the stone crab. Totally disagree with the negative reviews here. It's not The Ritz and yes stone crab is expensive, (compared to a fast food hamburger). But compared to other stone crab venues, the price is quite good. We didn't have very high expectations for Ballyhoos: big, plastic covered menu, pop radio station, eh decor. Seemed like it would be tired, Applebee-like food. But we were pleasantly surprised. I was thoroughly enjoying my food at Ballyhoos until I noticed a giant cockroach on my way to the restroom. When I pointed this out to the management, they became rude and aggressive. Obviously, I refused to eat the rest of my meal. I imagine the bugs come in off the dusty highways that surround this roadstand shack of a restaurant. My advice: go to another of the many, many clean and legitimate seafood establishments Key Largo has to offer. read more

This is my first time writing a Yelp review. I really never complain about service but we had a pretty bad experience at this place. We are a family of four with two small children. Our waiter was nice enough when we first came in, made some recommendations and answered some questions. Unfortunately, our kids did not like the meals they ordered and asked for something else. If you have kids, you know this happens all the time and while it may be annoying it's not a big deal. My wife asked him if we could have something else and his response was an attitude-filled "I guess"...and it all went downhill from there. It took a good 25 minutes for their food to come out, and it was dropped off without a word. I even had to call him back twice to take some bread plates we were finished with. We barely saw him from that point on. Had to ask random staff people for ketchup. No "how's everything?" visit. A little patter when he came to clear our plates and then 15 minutes of no-show. (We probably would have ordered dessert too!) Had to ask someone to find him to bring the check. The food was fine but really disappointing service. read more
