At the recommendation of friends, our Day 1 Supper was at Mrs. Mac's Kitchen II (also called Mrs. Mac's Kitchen (Big) on Google Maps). Having arrived at 4:30pm, we were immediately shown to a table and informed about the happy hour specials. Not normally ones to drink much on vacation, my wife and I instead opted to live in the moment and enjoy the island life, especially since it was 30 degrees when we left Ohio that morning. As such, we each ordered a rum punch (pictured), while my best friend ordered a Bulliet old fashioned and his wife a house margarita. With drink orders out of the way, Deja, our absolutely delightful waitress, took our food orders: sauteed seafood combo (for my wife), backyard BBQ burger with coleslaw (for me), burger and fries (for my BFF and his wife, who -unlike us- were smart enough to save room for dessert). While waiting for our meals, we took in the ambiance of the restaurant, and wow was there a lot to take in! First off, we loved how the old Pizza Hut building had been repurposed and transformed into the embodiment of the tropical island lifestyle. From the display tables showcasing seashells and historic Florida Keys photos, to the license plate light fixtures, to the ceiling-mounted blue sky and clouds panels, to the fish hanging in front of each distinctively Pizza Hut trapezoidal window, we loved it all! When our food arrived, it looked fantastic and tasted even better. My wife described her seafood combo as being excellent, with the Caribbean lobster "almost as good as the ones we get in Maine." Likewise, her fish was fresh and delicious, while the shrimp were succulent. My burger was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and was topped with expertly caramelized onions and bacon with just the right amount of crispness to it. My coleslaw side was also excellent, with the perfect balance of creaminess and zing. Our friends also said their burger and shoestring fries were fantastic. To round out our meal, each of the four of us ordered pieces of Key Lime Pie, which was some of the best I have ever had in my life (and I have eaten a lot of Key Lime Pies!)! Throughout our meal, Deja checked on us often without being overbearing, and kept the drinks flowing. All told, for 5 drinks, 3 entrées with sides, and 4 slices of Key Lime Pie, our bill before tax, tip, and credit card surcharge was $163.93. Considering the excellent food and outstanding service we received, the four of us universally agreed it was well worth the price! Pros: outstanding service, fantastic flavours, great atmosphere, and the 2-for-1 drinks during happy hour were a great deal! Cons: none! Friendly, but talked a little too much and didn't write anything down, so kept forgetting things. The Ugly: Unsure about the entire restaurant, but our table was dirty. Like old dirty. Not like, they didn't wipe it down, but more like it had never seen a deep clean and stuff just kept accumulating. I had the shrimp and corn chowder. It was very watery. We enjoyed the desserts. We did online ordering that said up in 60 minutes. When we went to pick it up, everything was cold and soggy. There were no utensils or tartar sauce with the meal. We called to complain and they acknowledge that the food had been sitting for 45 minutes waiting for us. What? Their app said 60 minutes. Not our problem. They offered to remake the food but we were so tired and disgusted we said no thanks. Very bad experience. read more

After visiting the smaller place of "Mrs Mac Kitchen" we decided on our way back from Key West to stop for lunch at the bigger "Mrs Mac Kitchen". We had two times the soup of the day, a wedge salad and sweet potato fries plus our drinks (coke, ginger ale and beer with and without alcohol). In total we paid $59.36. The food was good, but the soup was a little salty. The staff was nice and friendly. Overall I would give 3.5 stars, rounded do 4. Would I go again? Probably not, I would look for something else. read more

The big location!!! It's on the "Island" in the highway! This place is more of an upscale diner vibe ! They have a lot of really cool artwork on the walls and each table is a glass shadowbox of different local things! This place has a lot of heritage and definitely screams to tourist vibe ! Their Keylime pie shake and Keylime pie slice is very good. This is the first place I stopped to get a slice of Keylime pie! Overall, the space is awesome. I would avoid peak hours because it will be full, but if you're able to go a little earlier a little bit later at night, you'll have no problem finding somewhere to sit. read more

Both locations of Mrs. Mac's were on my must-visit list in the Florida Keys after our snorkeling trip. I had hoped to try the original (smaller) spot, but it closes early in the afternoon. Since we took our time after snorkeling, we ended up at the newer, larger location, which stays open all day. We arrived around 3:15 p.m. to find it nearly empty--just two tables of guests and a couple of people at the bar. The space is open and quiet- very relaxed vibe. Our waitress was sweet. My daughter wanted mahi, and I was eyeing the coconut shrimp, so she suggested we get the mahi and shrimp basket and upgrade it to coconut shrimp. Great call! Both the mahi and the coconut shrimp were outstanding--fresh, tender, juicy, and clearly caught that day. The batter was thin, crisp, and perfectly light. We also ordered a Greek salad, which was unbelievably fresh; every ingredient was delicious and full of flavor. No exaggeration--this was the best mahi, coconut shrimp, and Greek salad I've had for a long time. We also tried a bowl of conch chowder for the first time. It was good--rich and hearty--but tasted similar to other quality chowders. Highly recommend Mrs. Mac's larger location for a quiet, mid-afternoon meal. You won't be disappointed! read more

I would have scored a 4 if service had been better. Although friendly, our waiter left a lot to be desired, such as napkins and a glass of water that never arrived. The bar drinks were good. My sister was told they were out of pillar rum when there were 6 bottles decorating the bar. Perhaps they were just for decor? The chilli was very delicious and had great heat. Although our burger was ordered with a medium temp, and arrived well and a bit dry, there was enough bbq sauce on it to make up for the oversight. The key lime pie was very good, but not the best we've had in Key Largo. The carrot cake was all 5 stars in its mile high cream cheese topper! Overall, we had a good experience and I hope they were just short staffed. To come and collect glasses and say, hey those must have been good and walk away, instead of asking if we want another wasn't what we were expecting or we would have bounced on that when he arrived. We had to ask for any refills, again the water and napkins we asked for never arrived. Perhaps if he wasn't chatty Kathy at every table, he could take better care of others. Would I come back? Looks like an old Pizza Hut converted to a bar and restaurant. Bartender friendly and fast. Lots of people eating and having a wonderful time. Onion rings are phenomenal! Decided to stop here on our family vacation. This is the big dinner, as opposed to the small one, which operates on shorter hours. The service and food were excellent all around. The place is ocean themed and has great decor. They do not have a military discount; however, the owner/manager gave us a free piece of key lime pie, which was excellent. This place came very highly recommended, and we really wanted to like it. But, honestly, I didn't think it was that great. Very pricey. I had the Lobster Bites and my wife ordered the Shrimp sandwich. The lobster bites weren't bad, but you only get maybe 5 and a ton of fries (for over $30!!). My wife got her sandwich and realized it was just fish, not shrimp so they had to make her a new one. Coleslaw and fries were good. The waitress wasn't the most accommodating person, and the key lime pie was just meh.... The restraint itself is just a big building with not much character or ambiance. We stopped into this adorable restaurant on our way to Key West. We were greeted and served by Elizabeth, who took great care of us and was a super hospitable. Everything we ordered was excellent: coconut shrimp, broken conch, and crab cake sandwich. Our meals came with great sauces to complement the dish, but we could order any sauce we wanted. Classic American diner vibes serving burgers, fish, and steaks. Their entrees are filling, and we ordered the catch of the day (mahi mahi) which comes with a side salad and a side. The fish was cooked well, but could use a little more flavor. We chose the vegetable of the day as the side and it tasted like a boiled bag of frozen vegetables, so I definitely don't recommend that. Our server was wonderful, I wish I remembered her name. She was serving and bartending and doing fabulous at both. We got the mozzarella sticks, they were good for what they were. Nothing to write home about, but hit the spot nonetheless. I got the crab cake sandwich and it was the best I've had, so flavorful and not dry. This was our final option for trialing some sea food while on our adventures in key west. This joint is their second location and right by the hwy 1 and can be accessed driving in from both directions. We stoped by for a weekday lunch with the intent to try alligator bites. The menu is extensive and I strongly recommend going with their fish of the day options. We tried both to r fish of the day plate (mahi mahi) and fish do the day wrap (yellowtail). Both were excellent and better than the original gator bites we stopped for. (Which we're pretty decent but the fish of the day was seasoned and cooked just right) We finished with their trademark key lime pie which for me was just average but the other party members loved it over the other key lime pies we had tried while in key west. Disappointed. Picked up a pie to go otw home from Key West. I've had a slice of Mrs. Mac's key lime pie before at a party and thought it was amazing. However, the pie I got today is completely different. It has zero of the tartness I remembered and which made it so good. Just got a very sweet limey sad pie for $30. Unrelatedly, the woman at the counter wasn't the friendliest. Honestly, it would have mattered less to me if the pie was at least worth it. read more

I had just gone snorkeling not too far from here and decided I wanted to try some of the local cuisine. They were not terribly busy when I arrived, but it does seem as if the wait staff is having to run to keep up with the tables. My server was certainly a very pleasant man, but he seemed a little overextended and disorganized. When I showed them my coupon for the free Keylime freeze, he had to get some extended help from the manager to push it through. Not a big deal of course. The Freeze itself was interesting but nothing life-changing. I opted to get the catch of the day which was mahi-mahi. As is my habit I got it blackened, which was very good with a nice crispy finish to it. The Caesar salad and rice and beans on the side were both very good as well. The Keylime pie ended up being no better than any Keylime pie I've had most anywhere else. Perhaps this is a dish that just can't be made too many ways to begin with. The room itself was uncomfortable as it was rather hot outside, and I suspect their air-conditioning may not be working at 100%. Mrs. Mac's was full, including lots of locals, which is always a sure sign of a good restaurant. Their food quality is excellent and prices extremely reasonable considering the area. Of the items we ordered, the fried fish and shrimp platter was a huge favorite. I ordered the shrimp po boy because the key lime tartar sounded appealing, but I didn't even get a hint of key lime. Save on the bread and just get the shrimp basket. Big, fresh, crispy, delicious shrimp. If you check in on the app, you get a free key line freeze, which is basically a huge milk shake. Really tart and a perfect taste of the keys. Almost every restaurant around here has "award-winning" conch chowder. Theirs is really hearty and chunky, with good pieces of conch, but could have used a richer broth and been served with sherry. The fries came in the shape of little gold coins and were a big favorite with the family. My daughter commented how much she liked the Cole slaw, which was a surprise coming from her.
