Food is always very good. Have tried several items on the menu and have never been disappointed. The service is hit or miss at best. Wish they'd employee professional servers instead of high school kids, but the quality of the food deserves 5 stars despite the below average service. I'm from a small town and I love the mom and pop restaurants. I went for a drive and ended up in Plainfield. Drove by sal's and tried going in.However, they had a hug line. So I kept driving. After driving for another 30 minutes we decided to go back and give sal's a try. When we stopped the second time the line was gone. However we waited at the hostess station for at least 10 mins without anyone addressing us. Once we finally got sat our seasoned waitress kept ignoring us. We had to continually ask other associates for things like drink refills, boxes, and our check. Then we heard her at the table behind us for a good 10 mins talking about how a customer complained about her service. Ironic. I think it's time for her to retire at this point, it's not everyone else that is the problem. Keep driving! read more

Have been here 3 times since we moved to Indiana. Service was good, pizza has very fresh veggies, great crust. Will definitely be back.

I was so excited to come here, mainly because of the stuffed pizza I thought was available in all locations (turns out it's just at the Brownsburg restaurant). We were greeted with a smile and seated right away. I was actually quite pleasantly surprised since the restaurant is very nicely decorated. As soon as we sat down, a nice gentleman brought us bread to get us started. Our waitress took our drink orders, a coke and a water. She returned shortly after with a water and said they had ran out of coke - we ordered another water. She asked if we were ready to order, we said no. She left and returned not long after and asked again if we were ready, we said no. A third time she returned in a time span of 5 minutes and asked if we were ready, to which we said we were as to avoid the awkwardness of sending her back. We ordered our entrees and garlic rolls as appetizer. A solid 15-20min went by and our entrees arrived. Our waitress mentioned she didn't know why our garlic rolls hadn't been pulled yet. One of our entrees was wrong but we continued eating it since we were hungry and sending it back would only prolong our wait time. Our drinks were not topped off even once even though one of our glasses was completely empty. Our garlic rolls later arrived when we were half way through our entrees, our waitress offered to box them up for us since they were brought out so late, we declined. We tried grabbing a couple only to find out the cheese sauce had completely spilled to the bottom of the basket. When our waitress brought our check, she let us know that she had taken off $2 because the food had arrived late, we paid and left. Several of these things I would've overlooked on a regular busy visit, but unfortunately I couldn't come up with an excuse when we were one of only 4 tables being used. We'll try out the Brownsburg one in the future and hopefully our experience will be different. **Edit: It's worth mentioning that the food was actually pretty good! This restaurant is really good, like many of the other reviews mentioned they serve way more than pizza here. I also like the chicken parm pasta meal, a must eat for sure. The atmosphere was pleasant and the server was friendly. It is cool watching them make the pizzas off to the side of the restaurant. I recently went to Sal's for the first time for dinner and while their service was very slow, the food was very tasty. Went today for the 2nd time but this time at lunch. Unfortunately, the experience was quite different. The waiter never smiled and kind of mumbled everything. I didn't realize that their lunch menu was very cut down and was looking to get the chicken marsala again. Was surprised that they were unwilling to serve that for lunch and couldn't find anything else that was somewhat healthy on their reduced menu. My friend ordered a Stromboli and his coke tasted funny. He asked for another saying that something was wrong and was given another exactly the same. Definitely, a lack of motivation. This place is an authentic Italian style pizza and spaghetti house. I ordered the traditional cheese pizza. It was amazing. I also ordered the garlic rolls. Delicious. So glad a stumbled upon this place while traveling for business. I recommend checking it out. It is pretty slow during the weeknights and more of an older crowd. Tried Sal's again tonight 4/6/20 and still experienced terrible customer service. My husband went in to pick up the order and the girl at the counter started to give him his order when the telephone rang and she answered it. She proceeded to take a new order on the phone while my husband waited. Mind you, our food was ready. She got off the phone and started to gather our food together when another telephone call came in and she answered it. She proceeded to take another order while my husband waited. While our food is getting colder and colder by the minute. I think the owner needs to tell the workers that whoever comes in or calls first is the priority and no other customer should interrupt the transaction until it is completed. The phone calls should have been put on hold until my husband's transaction was finished. read more

We had such high hopes for Sal's - it looks so fun from the outside. Our service was just awful. Really, really terrible. Incorrect items brought out, we had to beg for drink refills and bread refills while we waited a long time for our meal. We were served dessert with no utensils after all dishes had been cleared. Our server packed our leftovers sideways, so they leaked all over the bag and the table. We really thought dessert would redeem the meal. The cheesecake was warm at the tip and frozen solid the rest of the way. And the cannoli had no filling - the following we present outside the ends, but the middle was completely hollow. Usually do lunch at Sal's on Wednesday & Thursday because of their amazing breadsticks and salad! Unfortunately, the size of their salad's has gotten significantly smaller over the last couple of months. Their Chef's Salad is basically the size of a side salad now. When I order lunch I typically spend $15.75 which includes the Chef's Salad, 4 plain breadsticks with cheese, and a sprite. With the salad size getting smaller and smaller I may have to consider eating elsewhere even though I would be hugely disappointed! The service is almost always quick and friendly! Called to make a carry out order and they quoted me 30-40 minutes. Arrived 40 minutes after I called and there was a line out the door. Waited in the line for 10-15 minutes and then once I was in, I was told my order was ready so I paid and patiently sat in the corner to wait for my food. Watched my food sit on a cold tray for 15 minutes while they finished 1 out of 5 things in the order. Politely asked for the bruschetta to be remade since it is no good when sitting out for long. The manager and assistant manager mocked my request and moved on to other orders. I sat for another 20 minutes until finally receiving my order. Got home and you bet, everything was cold and stale. Unassuming decor but clean and comfortable. Full bar. The food is outstanding. I had the house salad with house dressing. It was delicious with a vinegar bite that made it really interesting to taste, and very enjoyable. My main dish was linguini tuttu mare, linguini with various seafood. It was extra good. The noodles were al dente, the fish tasted fresh, the tomato sauce had body and was flavorful but didn't overpower the taste of the fish. We ended the meal with shared tiramisu, also good. Pickup last night (Friday) at the Plainfield store was a disaster. I was driving from Edinburgh and called from their to place my order for (2) carbonara's, a linguini with clams, and a pepperoni calzone with 2 salads and a soup. Wouldn't think that would be too hard. Was told it would be about 35 to 45 minutes for the order. Using my phone for shortest directions it said I should arrive there about 50 minutes. Great. So I get to Sal's, pay for my order, and am told it will be a couple minutes. About 30 minutes later my order was finally ready. Apparently somebody misplaced the calzone and didn't have the balls to say they screwed up. When I ask about it the black girl working the counter just shrugged her shoulders. As I sat waiting for my order a few other people experienced the same stuff. Ridiculous!!!! We'll see if I recommend this place and I damn sure won't be leaving an advance tip for shitty service!!! read more

Food was definitely frozen and just warmed up, there's no way this was handmade. The soup tasted like lightly seasoned water with warm vegetables. They then charged 21.75% gratuity since we had 20 people even though the menu says 18%. They crossed out all of our receipts with a black sharpie and wrote their own, new total after tax and tip to try and confuse us. Overall, really poor quality and shady business practice, would've preferred to just get dinner from the target down the street which I recommend over this place any day. read more

I had heard a lot about sals! Had a pizza and was NOT impressed. They talk a big game on freshness, but as a professional chef myself I can see they are cutting a lot of corners. The garlic knots however are AMAZING!!! The new location in camby is very good! Waiting to do a review on it. I suggest everybody try the new location as the food was fantastic! FOUND FINGERNAIL IN FOOD Someone at our table pulled a FINGERNAIL out of their pasta on Friday night. It was literally in his mouth. Conveniently there was no manager we could speak to on a busy Friday night the day before Valentine's Day. Yea right. Needless to say not a single person in our party of 7 finished their food. I wish I had tried Sal's sooner. The garlic rolls are great and a must try. I had the chicken parm and my wife had the manicotti. Both tasted great, the only piece of constructive criticism I could give is to leave the plates under the broiler another 39 seconds so that the cheese on top starts to brown and bubble. I've only had the pizza so I can't speak to anything else. It's just OK. I'd rather have Chicago Pizza or CJ's. Service is so-so. I've been there twice and the last time there was maybe one other table and two servers just stood in the middle of the dining room and talked to each other (rather loudly). I will never be back to this place. My family was in town for the holidays and I mistakenly took them there thinking it would be a good time and instead we walked into a very unwelcoming restaurant with a table of children sitting alone (obviously children of someone who works there) being loud, staring at us and even talking about us with nothing being done about it. We had to talk to each other at the top of our lungs to be able to hear each other and it wasn't until I told the waitress that I couldn't hear her when she was asking if the food was good that the children were shuffled to the back of the restaurant. If you want to be able to have a good meal without feeling like children are staring at you and talking about you DONT GO TO SALS!!!!!! Just finishing up dinner at Sal's in Plainfield and the food was delicious as always, however, the set was the WORST! We had guests in from out of town and told them how much we liked Sal's and ended up being extremely disappointed and embarrassed because of how terrible the overall experience was. Do NOT go there with a party of 6 or or more otherwise they automatically add a 20% tip in and basically forgot that you're even there. VERY DISAPPOINTED! read more

This place has gone down hill! We have been regulars - at least once a week - and will no longer go back. Food is nothing great - pasta from the freezer, no flavor in anything. Fantastic pizza and garlic rolls. Nice thin crust with crispy but chewy edges. We had the caprese pizza and the Giardiniera - both had fresh ingredients, the right amount of cheese, just a little sauce and lots of flavor. Totally unnecessary because the pizzas are so delicious, but we also had the garlic rolls because everyone said they were great - and they were! Chewy, cheesy, garlicky and great for dipping in the marinara sauce! Wow, that put us over the top. The great thing is we have lots of leftovers!! Definitely a great local pizza joint. We got takeaway and when we went to pick it up the place was packed - another sign of a great pizza joint. You won't be disappointed. read more

You have to go here for the dulci cannoli! It is the best I've ever had and I have had my fair share of cannolis.

I am generally skeptical about ethnic restaurants in small places, particularly in the Midwest, so I expected another Papa Joe (Avon) experience (which was horrible). However, this time the food was really good. I had bruscetta, minestrone, veal pizzaiola, and spumoni. Everything was good, but the veal pizzaoila (with spaghetti) was exception. In fact, I was in Florence two weeks ago, and this could easily hold its own with some of the dishes I ate there. While Sal's isn't cheap, compared to Donato's or Pizza Hut, it is very affordable for the quality it provides. An absolute gem! read more

One of the people I was there with was raving about the alfredo, she loved it. They have a few locations I think but this is the only one I've been to. We were seated at 6:45 and received our food at 7:55. When I suggested to the manager that 70 minutes to make a pizza was a bit excessive, she did not apologize and told me that I needed to read the menu more carefully, because it states that some items may take longer to cook because they are made from scratch(it does say this). When I suggested that 70 minutes was still unnacceptable, she still did not apologize, offered us a free dessert, and suggested that we were really lucky to be offered that. The pizza was pretty good, but so is DiGiorno for Pete's sake. It isn't worth that kind of poor service, with a healthy dose of management arrogance thrown in to boot. Unless you have over an hour to wait to even receive your food, save your money and go somewhere else. read more

I have eaten at the Brownsburg location and I felt that my visit to the Plainfield store was nearly identical. Admittedly, I often choke at the last minute when ordering... I like this place but always avoided it due to limited parking. That's no longer an issue so it's back on our list. Sals is 1000% better than the larger franchise Italian restaurant. Food tastes fresh, service is good and the restaurant is always clean. Only reason I didn't give a 5 star is sometimes it takes a while to get your food but that's because meals are prepared fresh.
