As a life-long Buffalonian in my 60's, this is the first time I've eaten a breaded chicken wing that is just as delicious as any from the more popular/frequented restaurants that serve a more traditional chicken wing. First off, if you are not native to Western NYS, specifically the outskirts of Buffalo, in the vicinity of Cheektowaga, Depew, Williamsville, you would never know this place exists! I stumbled upon it, unexpectedly, several years ago, while in the area for work. It's smack, dab in the middle of a residential street, off Transit, on Olmstead Ave. This place is a hidden gem! Absolutely love their wings. (Disclaimer: they're breaded. So if you're a wing snob or purist and hate on breaded wings, you've been warned. Nice, little neighborhood (literal) bar. This place is smack dab in the middle of a residential street and I think it's fantastic, haha. Went on the recommendation of my mechanic and got the boneless wings with housenade BBQ sauce ($7) and a beer. The boneless wing pieces were big and juicy and the house sauce had a nice tangy flavor to it. The bar wasn't too noisy (even with the local hockey team playing) and the staff seemed to friendly and engaging. Definition of dive bar but when I seen the reviews telling us they had some of the best wings in the area, we had to check them out. They are not your traditional Buffalo chicken wings - they are breaded. Which adds an extra level of crunch which honestly, were so darn delicious!! The only problem is that it takes away from the "low carb" draw of chicken wings for those on the keto diet. But the flavor was delicious and the wings were a good size. They offer the traditional blue cheese and carrots and celery. The bartender lady was awesome. She kept everyone entertained, whether it was the regular drunks that spend their time there everyday or us newbies that were just there for their massive beer glasses and the wings. read more

I'm a big fan of the comfortable neighborhood spots and this did not disappoint. This "lounge" blends into the neighborhood; at first glance appearing as another house on the street. Once inside, it's tiny, but clean and comfortable. There's a designated bar area and a little sit down for a meal area. Of course we were at the bar! My husband tried the beef on weck with fries, I had the jalapeño cheese logs and we shared medium wings. Everything was cooked well, tasted great and came out by the owner/cook/bartender for the day. SHAKE N' BAKE! If you're looking for a wing that is different from all the rest, Sal's is the spot. This place extremely small and is smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood in Depew, but it all adds to the experience. The wings are breaded and then tossed. We ordered their medium (cross between medium and BBQ), garlic parm, and Cajun. All were pretty good, but pretty salty and the wings were not as big as I remember. While attempting a small scale wing tour, I came across an article that listed Sals as a "cult classic" and knew we had to check it out. This place is smack in the middle of a neighborhood which I absolutely love. When I walked in I actually said aloud "This feels like home". The smell of this place brought back some memories of some of my favorite bars from my hometown in Lockport. It's a small bar area with some seating then another adjoining room has some dining room ish seating. We sat down ( don't wait to be seated just pick a table) and was immediately greeted by the bartender to take a drink order. We both got bud light drafts that were very large and only $3.25 each. Make sure to pay attention to the sauce descriptions on the menu before ordering as they aren't typical hot, med, mild. It goes from bbq to med/hot to suicide quickly. I got the med/hot which had a flavor of a classic hot wing - pretty spicy in my opinion. My husband regrettably got the hot suicide. The wings have a breading on them but still pretty crispy and tasty. It was different in a good way- loved them! I do wish they had celery instead of carrots. Recently, I was at Sal's and felt like the wing quality has changed. Before this visit, I was there about 2 years ago and thought it was fantastic. This recent time, I thought the wings were soggy, and not as how I remembered them to be. the sauce was great, but the wings could have been cooked longer and I was a little disappointed. There weren't that many people in the restaurant and only another table, besides mine eating, so I'm not sure what the hurry was to get our wings out on the table. I'll give them another try in a few months, but other wing places have ruined me and I think that is one factor why I didn't enjoy Sal's as much as I once had. read more

First things first, Sal's is located in an unexpected location - it's a small neighborhood establishment with incredible wings. For flavors - thee mild is a delicious BBQ-esque and a tad bit spicy but so good. They are the perfect amount of sauce and wing. Sal actually stands for the Salad that you should order instead of the wings because the wings are really, really not impressive. I know a lot of people love them though, and these things are a matter of taste. They're more along the lines of Bar Bill wings, which are awesome but not my fave... only way smaller, even more dry, and not so tasty. In my opinion, the type of wings served here is past its Sal-By date. These are supposed to be some of the best wings around. I went here with a good friend and to say they were underwhelming would be a massive understatement. I didn't like them at all... they were tiny... it didn't help that we got the wrong flavours but that wasn't because we ordered them wrong... we were fairly specific and the waitress messed up the order. That's okay though. Price-wise, they're more expensive than most wing places, and the fact that the wings are baby sized and miniature and not juicy or wet at all just added to my misery. In fact the only reason I wouldn't give this a 1 or 2 is because my friend was kind enough to take me there, I don't think he was overly impressed either, but he was great company so there was that. The service was pretty good too so that is a plus. The atmosphere in the place is very authentic, it's a true back street Buffalo tavern and I like that. Also there is the fact that it's a beloved family-owned business and while I didn't like the wings at all, they weren't inedible (Buffalo Wild Wings microwaved wings, anyone?). We found Sal's lounge on a list of top Buffalo wing spots. I'd never even heard of Sal's before reading this list, so it seemed like an interesting addition to our impromptu wing tour today. Sal's is a small neighborhood bar that you'll probably miss if you don't live in the area or don't know about it already. It's kind of divey, but honestly it's a dive in the best way. The place is a bit outdated decor wise and smells like old beer, but the people are friendly and the beers are cheap so it felt like home. My wife and I split an order of wings, she opted for medium-hot (their version of hot) and I went for hot (which both the menu and the waitress warn you are closer to 'suicide' wings). First thing you'll notice about these wings are their appearance. At first glance I did a double take because I thought we were given boneless wings. Turns out we were not, they just seem to have an odd shape because the wings were breaded before they were fried. They had a fried chicken like consistency and honestly I was all about it. I really think it made for one of the most unique wings in Buffalo. The only problem the meal was the fact that I ordered the wings hot. I like hot foods. I normally order my wings hot, hot extra saucy, or extra hot. I could drink the "hot" sauce at Duffs by the gallon and be fine. With all that being said, the "Hot" wings here completely shut me down. The first wing was good but as I worked my way through the plate, the heat from each wing compounded on top of the last. After 4 wings my eyes and nose had turned into a steady faucet, my tongue felt like it was burning out of my head. Overall I think we had a great experience here. This is a true Buffalo bar in just about every way. I can't wait to get back here again in the future and order anything else except for their "Hot" hot sauce. read more

Sal's Lounge is a hard to find neighborhood dive bar that serves some decent wings. I wouldn't say they are the best, but they are definitely the crispiest and most breaded-wings that I've ever tried. Rumor has it that they used to serve the largest chicken wings in all of Buffalo, but recent supplier issues caused them to downsize 'em. Curious to try these wings, I came with a fellow Yelper and we split an order of 10 wings. As you come in, don't expect a hostess...just seat yourself and someone will probably come over. Our waitress was super nice and helpful. She let us split our single order of wings and we received half Medium (which was more like Medium BBQ) and half Garlic Parmesan. The wings were served with some blue cheese and a bag of baby carrots. There were like 14 served to our order which was unexpected (we only expected 10). Their medium sauce is more of a BBQ-style and I wanted a bit more of a kick. I would prefer more of the traditional style wings, although these were tasty...the side of blue cheese was definitely not house made and the $1 variety you would find at Wal-Mart. You could definitely taste the difference and the bagged carrots show the place to be more of a divey style. All in all, I just didn't like the wings that much, but definitely appreciate the neighborhood-feel of this pub. Check it out! You may like the wings more than me! read more

I was looking for a place with battered wings in the area (our go-to is usually Vinny's) I was sadly very disappointed in these. The vinegar was lacking any vinegar flavor. The wings were over battered and tasted like they were frozen. Their medium sauce is their signature sauce and it similar to spicy barbecue. Been going to Sal's since college .. won't mention when, but grunge was popular(!) The address is correct, don't be dissuaded as you drive down a normal residential street. Also don't be alarmed at the sign outside telling you 'no bike colors allowed'. Once inside, sit down, order a 20oz PBR, double order medium, extra blue cheese, and fries with gravy. While waiting play a few games of keno, or check out the newly renovated men's room (I'm told the ladies have a great photo of Tiger Woods in their powder room). What's to say about the wings, except best in Buffalo. I almost hesitate to post this as it's a secret best not overrun (Duff's) or oversold (Anchor Bar) or run out of business (Rooties). If you are from the area, its closest relative is Nine-Eleven Tavern on South Park and Bloomfield in South Buffalo (no relation to the terrorist attack, they were there first). Went to Sal's on a Tuesday night with a group of 6 people. There were a few people sitting at the bar and a few others at tables but quiet for the most part. The bartender/waitress was awesome and very attentive to us. She was also willing to turn hockey on our TVs in a baseball bar. :) Also a plus that she didn't mind splitting up the checks. Sal's is at the top of a lot of lists, articles and publications. So we had to check it out. A lot of reviews said it was hard to find but I grew up in the area and thought it was perfectly easy. Tucked away on a side street in depew, it's the perfect little neighborhood joint. It seems a lot of people in there knew the bartender, and he knew many patrons by name. It's small and intimate inside, exactly what I love about a neighborhood bar. We got twenty wings and fries. The sauce options were a bit different, they don't really have a mild type of mild. They describe their mild as medium. We erred on the side of caution and split the wings, half mild and half honey Cajun. The wings were AMAZING!!! They have a breading on them that elicits this crispy texture, but it's like they injected this flavor into them because they are so juicy and tender past the breading. Ambiance is everything. A crowd of regulars at the bar, Quick Draw on the screen, and basic beers in everyone's cup. As soon as we walked in, I knew I'd love it here. The bartender greeted us with a big smile and we grabbed a booth in back. She assumed we had been before but we revealed we were newbies and she happily gave us the rundown of the menu. The wings are "breaded" which is more or less a crunchy coating. The medium bbq is their house style (we went with that), but they offer hot (Franks-based), cajun, vinegar (definitely trying this next time), and regular bbq. They never "butter any sauce down." Sal's also offers hand-rolled pizza logs in a few different varieties including the standard cheese and pepperoni and a Reuben style! The draft list is simple, nothing local, but it does the trick. I'm not sure why people gave this place $$ as our bill was very cheap for a filling dinner for two. Pizza logs were cheesy and crisp. Wings were crispier and the sauce was perfect with a nice kick added to the bbq. I feel like we grew up going to this place. We will be back very soon. read more

First of all, I wasn't sure the map was right about this place being in a residential area, but that's where it is. We had the hot wings. They were crispy and the sauce was the right amount of flavor and heat. I could've probably eaten another dozen. We also tried the beef on weck. The roll was a little too salty for us, but the meat was moist and the roll was fresh. The environment was dark and cozy with hockey and baseball on the screens. Our waitress was friendly and responsive. We showed up about 8pm on a Saturday and it wasn't too busy, but it got pretty busy about 9pm. I wish I had a place like this at home because it seems like the perfect place to go with a friend to watch hockey, have a few beers, and enjoy some wings. read more

On Saturday 6 of us did a wing crawl. From the 6 places that we went Sal's was tied for first place with Gabriel's Gate. This is a small neighborhood bar, literally between houses. For a minute there I though we had the wrong address because there nothing but houses all around. My favorite wings here are the Honey Cajun. They are very crispy with the perfect amount of sauce. My second favorite were the medium wings. We also had the garlic parmesan, they were full of flavor but not my thing. We also had a recommendation to try their home made pizza logs. They were good. They reminded me of egg rolls, like pizza egg rolls. I would have them again. We came one time during the weekend and the place was pretty empty. Eating buffalo wings in Buffalo has been on my foodie list for awhile. I was passing through the city as part of a cross-country move and knew it would be my last chance to have a true buffalo wing for awhile. I selected Sal's for this endeavor because it was close to my hotel and the kitchen was open until midnight. The Yelp reviews are sort of divided on this place and I can see why. The wings are breaded in a way that makes them more like chicken tenders making them kind of soft. There is good sauce coverage and the hot is hotter than your average hot wings. I took one bite and knew that these wings weren't for me, but my fiancé thought they were great and said he'd go back for more. We also ordered the Beef on Weck. It came with a side of au jus and horseradish. The beef was tender and flavorful. We were traveling with a dog, so had to get our meal as takeout. However, Sal's looks like it is a great neighborhood hangout. It is a small unassuming building that's surrounded by houses. Inside there is an L shaped bar, a few TVs and a dining area. read more

Sigh. I am reluctantly downgrading my rating of Sal's for the final time. Sal's remains a traditional Buffalo neighborhood pub of the highest order. (Well actually a Depew neighborhood pub, but Depew is the capital of Greater Buffalo.) This is the neighborhood pub that welcomes strangers and treats them right. But the famed chicken wings are just not what they used to be. I don't know what happened to the wings. Yes, the sauce is still great and incredibly hot, but what has happened to the damned wings? You now get tiny wings with a thin breading and with tons of sauce dumped on top. The wings have become hostage to the sauce, which I admit is still the hottest, tastiest wing sauce north of Bar-Bill Tavern. But the wings underneath the sauce are a neutered edition of the glorious wings that Sal's once served so many eons ago. I will be stopping in for beer in the future, but I can no longer recommend the wings. read more

Went here before a Friday night at the races (Lancaster) with my brother and nephew. We had a double order of hot wings. The wings were cooked perfectly.
