Best Italian we have found within 20 mins drive of Exton PA! This place is family operated and run and they have recipes and food items straight from old Italy. Owners are authentic and great hosts at their restaurant. Their menu is very expansive and while I haven't tried any of them, they rotate home made deserts. My wife loves to try them. Our favorite dishes include old fashioned spaghetti and meatballs, baked ziti, capresi salads, mozzarella sticks, cheese steaks, and pizza. All in all, great home made entrees, but also the best neighborhood pizza spot around. Also key note is they are byob. read more

It's ok food. But when they charge you for a thimble size of dipping sauce, that's not good. This is the only place that charges for a dipping sauce for your Stromboli or pizza. It is a BYOB restaurant but they charged us $2.00 for wine glasse!!! again, never experienced that before! needless to say, won't go back there again!! read more

Skimming the Customers. Today marks the third time that this pizza place played games with their prices. First time happened at the end of the pandemic (around February 2022). They had their expired prices on their paper menu (from 2 years ago) in the store and their Covid Prices (10% add-on). No problem. Support your local businesses. Approximately two visits during the rest of 2022 and into 2023 had the same results. Good food usually. Friendly service. Inflated prices hoping you are not checking your receipt or adding up the prices, particularly on take-out food. Today, three sets of prices: Meat Lover's Stromboli - Printed Menu Price $17.95; Website Price on April 29, 2023 is $18.95; Owner's/Cash Register Price $19.95. I questioned the differences and they acted like they did not know about these pricing issues. They stated that they had no time to update their website or their paper menus. On top of everything else, the food was 30 minutes late for Take-out and they burned the stromboli. It is either actual skimming and/or a mismanaged restaurant. Check your receipt. read more

Every time I come to Downingtown I visit Sal's. It is the best Italian restaurant outside of Italy. The service is wonderful and the food takes me back to Italy. Since it's close to my place of employment, I usually pick up my meals or have them delivered through DoorDash. I've never had a bad meal from here, nor have they ever messed up my order. Will not go back. Soggy pizza, literally puddles of liquid on top of the pizza and it was not grease. The topping slipped right off of the dough and was impossible to eat. Even the sauce slipped right off. When I took it back, the gentleman argued with me telling me that pizza was "supposed to be like this" and also had many excuses along the lines of "it's hot it is going to be soggy" or "it's because of the toppings". I get the same exact pizza everywhere I go and I have never had an issue. He became very defensive & offered a refund out of spite, began being rough with the register and things on the counter & was just rude. 4 years and several visits later, still good and never disappointed. Our most recent visit was for my favorite summer dish, their Lobster Ravioli Della Estate. Made in house, they are the best ravioli ever. The pasta is fresh and perfectly cooked so that it is tender but does not fall apart. The filling is creamy and redolent of lobster. You can have them with a rosa sauce off the regular menu, but in summer the special sauce is spectacular. It is infused with corn flavor from simmering the cobs in the cream, there is crisp chopped bacon and tomatoes and fresh corn pan seared, probably in some bacon fat. Finished with a confetti of fresh parsley. Heaven on earth. I check their Specials menu on their website regularly especially in summer when the corn starts to come in because summer would not be summer without having this dish at least once. Also look out for the Peach Cream pie made by Michele the waitress who apparently also does everything else here. It is another seasonal delight that disappears too fast. My husband had the Chicken Parm special that came with a cavatelli baked in a creamy roasted garlic sauce with sauteed pancetta and shallots dusted with crispy herbed breadcrumbs. Though he is fearful of garlic, he loved it. The beauty is in the details. And they really pay attention to the details. Now that this is finished, it is lunch time and I will be devouring my leftovers. read more

Based on the Yelp reviews, we decided to give Sal's a whirl. I have to say that overall it was just OK. One of us was interested in getting a good veal parmigiana and this seemed to be the only place in this area offering one. It was ok. Cheesy enough and the sauce ok. The fettuccine Alfredo was disappointing. It was creamy enough but no signs of a taste of parmesan and was generally under seasoned. Our third diner opted for a cheesesteak which again was OK but not a driving force to bring us back. Disappointed, for what should have been a four-star experience. Most of my reviews are about the places I go when I'm NOT home. Haven't Yelp'd in a while, so i figured maybe I should take some time to comment on some of the places I frequent when I am in town. Sal's qualifies as the "hole in the wall" local pizza joint. Except that I friggen' love this place. It's not Boston's north end, or South Philly family style. What it is -- is the place I turn to for real home style Italian cooking. That's saying something [ for me]. I love to cook Italian - Mario Batalli is a god [to me]. But Vince (go figure! the owner is named Vince - not Sal, but that's another story and not relevant to a review) and his wife - along wit' the "guys" that cook there deliver some of the best Italian dishes you'll get anywhere. When it comes to pizza, Sal's set the standard for me (and for my friends from out of town that revere his pizza as much as I do). It's just that good. My son is a big cheese steak fan - although I have to say that for us old-timers, Jonny's in Frazer was the original standard in this category. Nonetheless - damn fine steak sandwiches that we get on a regular basis. Ron's School house (different review) is the only close competitor in this category in the Exton locale. But let's face it - if you live in anywhere in southeastern pa, you probably have your very own, handpicked place for steak sandwiches. So why even try to convince anyone on this score? No. What sets Sal's apart is the rest of the menu. Vince is right off the boat - along with a bunch of his right hand men. The menu contains a variety of classic Italian dishes. I - of course - have some favorites. One is the scungilli salad . That's conch for those of you not familiar with the Italian name. They serve a ton of scungilli served in a mix of lettuce and chopped celery, with an olive oil-lemon dressing mixed with parsley (i think). Fantastic! My other favorite is the linguine with mussels. New Zealand greenlips - about a dozen big ones - with a traditional chunky, garlicky, olive oil marina that I could eat all on its own. Sometimes I have them add scungilli to it as well. Wow. What a belly full. This is your typical strip mall location - so not a ton of atmosphere. But if you are going to eat-in, bring your bottle o' wine and enjoy the friendly service. Speaking of which, depending on the night, Vince's wife may be doing the cooking. Then you're in luck. She seems to dictate the weekly/weekend specials - which I have NEVER been disappointed in. One example - a homemade Tuscan bean soup that was as good as anything I've had in Rome. The specials are always changing, but nobody in my family has been disappointed -- ever. Reasonable prices and a friendly "hey!" complete the picture. So if you're in Lionville, grab yourself a nice bottle of vino' from the state store in the same strip mall and enjoy some home-style Italian cooking that will have you thinking "damn - why didn't I know about this place?" read more

The Good: Fast service, many slice pies The Bad: seating, a bit expensive Tried this joint out for lunch today with a buddy and ordered 2 medium sodas, a 16" pepperoni pizza, and an app of loaded fries (3 cheeses, bacon, and a side of ranch) all for $26 and change. When you walk in you are warmly greeted and your order is placed at the counter. There are a bunch of pies there for folks that want to order by the slice, but we dined in. After getting our drinks we took a seat and about five minutes later had the app delivered. The fries were great! There was a good sized portion with plenty of cheese. Maybe another 2 minutes later the pie was delivered. Now that has always been a big no no for me. Give me a chance to at least eat half of my appetizer before bringing the entree. The Neapolitan style pizza was pretty greasy with a crispy edge crust, but it had no special flavor either good or bad. Lastly, the booth seating is just high-back hard benches that could use some sort of cushioning. Now there are only about 10 booths in the front so maybe the intention is to make it a little uncomfortable to keep traffic moving, but I would have preferred something a bit softer on my bottom. All and all, an average experience that I probably won't repeat. read more

I had been traveling all day, hotel reservations were a mess, flight was delayed a couple hours, got stuck in traffic, and just wanted to find some sort of warm comfort food, to make a bitterly cold day better. So I thought I would try the Italian place I had a lot of luck with on previous visits to the area. It was closed. Having a frustrating day, I was ready to give up, do fast food, and take it to the hotel, then, I found Sal's. It was a bit different than what I was used to, as I walked in surveying the shop. I was the only patron in the place, so I asked, "Alright, how do we do this?" to the young man behind the counter. He was very kind, explained the process to me, offered me a menu, and we talked about everything on it. He convinced me to try the Italian cheese steak. I did. Simply put, the best I had had in a very long time. The portion was huge, served hot off the griddle, immediately, and absolutely delicious. I very seldom eat sandwiches of that size, but I devoured it, embarrassingly quickly. The only thing I can tell you, is I will be going back to try the other items on the menu. If my next trip is half as good as this one, it will still be awesome. read more

I was provided with extra sauce for the pasta I had ordered but my guests didn't even need extra sauce. Recently had the Tortellini Della Mamma, a cheese filled tortellini w/ parm cream sauce and shallots, spinach and tomatoes. A new favorite! I'm even trying to replicate at home. This is one of the best local pizza shops in the Lionville / Exton area. The place is always clean, and the staff is very helpful and friendly. Most of the food is slightly plain, but with the addition of some toppings/spices, it is very good. The price is slightly higher than most places, but I've never had a sub-par meal. read more
