Apple picking Road trip to charlottesville with family led me to Sals. After a couple hours picking apples, and eating country style donuts ... we were recommended to Sals for pizza. We were looking for authentic NY style. We got something close.. but NY style is very hard to duplicate. Our group was 5 adults and 6 kids. We seated ourselves, the place was small and almost full but we got there just in time to grab 2 tables. Our server was okay.. she was nice, but didnt clear away plates or refill glasses like she should have and she never came to ask how everything was. Dissapointing. The food: it was pretty good, we ordered 2 large cheeze pies, and 1 meat lover type, pasta and some pitchers of soda. The pizza was piping hot.. as in burn-the-skin-on-the-roof-of-my-mouth-hot. Crust was okay, I liked my pizza but just wasnt wowed by it. Im a serious pizza critic, always in search of a good pizza pie in VA. The one thing that was so odd was the number of women behind the counter. Im not sure if the entire staff is female but there were a good 4-5 ladies behind the counter and a couple more serving. Odd for a pizzeria, Im used to seeing guys back there. My one true complaint was the bathroom... its in the back in a creepy dark hallway next to the kitchen. There was pee all around the base of the toilet..nearly impossible to avoid stepping in.. Paper towels were sloppy and it just didnt look like anyone paid any attention to cleanliness in the restroom. Hopefully this was just a busy night. They really need to make the hallway better lit..the lighting is way too dark. My 9 year old was scared to walk through there. Would I go back? If in croziet again, sure I would try the pizza again. read more

Really great food anything you choose you can't go wrong. Go there several times a week.

What I like about this place is the fact they have a Gluten free menu which is great because my granddaughter visits and that is a place we can go. The food is just okay and though people rave about the pizza, I find it average but I have high standards for pizza. They make their own pizza dough and bread. I ordered Chicken Marsala once and another similar type chicken dish another time and both times had to pour the fat off before eating it. This place needs a good cleaning and wipe down. What you find as condiments on the table is sticky and dirty. It's not enough to wipe the tables after people leave but everything else on the table too and with clean wash cloths. I don't want to touch anything there. The whole place could do with some sprucing up. read more

AWESOME!! It's a cute little place. It was good atmosphere, and good food. It was loud, but not an obnoxious loud, it was just loud like people having a god time. It was fun, and The staff is friendly. I was a little bummed that they had no Cal zones, but the Stromboli was a fabulous substitute. The pizza was very good as well. read more

My wife and I have lived in Crozet for 4 years, and this is one of our favorite places to go for takeout, and definetly a treat to sit in and eat as well. The pizza is classic New York Style pizza, thin, and served piping hot from the oven. The pasta dishes are also traditional italian style dishes, great lasagna, angel hair pasta, as well as calzones. One of the things that I need to make note of is their tomato sauce/marinara that they make from scratch here. It is a traditional family recipe that is served here and it is some of the best I've tasted. It makes all the dishes. What makes this place a great place though, is that it's family run, and you feel as if you're dining at someone's home, right down to the way they greet you every time you walk in. This is a place we frequent often, for all the right reasons-don't waste your time with Crozet Pizza, the only thing authentic about that place is the reservation list you'll be put on for an empty restaurant. An absolutely outstanding pizzeria! Not only the food is superior in both taste and preparation, but the people who work there are super! I recently visited Sal's after I and my family had moved from the Charlottesville area in the 1980's and was very pleased to find it was still run and owned by the same family. I highly recommend their pizzas and various Italian meals from the menu. Their pepperoni roll is absolutely great and filling. The waitresses are friendly and attentive. Although the pizzeria is located in a small shopping center, there is plenty of seating for various sized groups. Without a doubt a great place for family dining and well worth the short drive from Charlottesville down Rt. 250 to Crozet. Bring a big appetite! read more

Excellent all around. I grew up in c-ville & only get back a couple of times a year, but this is a MUST every time I get east. I can't say I've been home without a meal at Sal's. The pizza is astounding - starting with the perfect thin crust and the homemade sauce. Other favorites are a giant greek salad and the chicken cacciatore (when available). I hear there is a new turbo-charged cheesesteak called "The Don". Haven't seen one to be sure yet, but I will before I leave next time. The staff might as well be family - not much more to say. Incredible!!!!!! Loved the food and I am a hard core pizza snob! Leaving Gordonsville VA and heading back to NC. Stopped in and order to go. Sat down to drink a beer while waiting and food was done fast, I decided to eat a slice while I was there and it was amazing. The granddaughter of who I would believe to be "Sals" was making the pizza and she was so sweet. Told us his story and and you could tell how much love she had for the restaurant! read more

I don't even know where to begin. I'm from New York and I can tell you what good pizza it is and Sal's doesn't even come close. I have to try to keep the pizza down after eating it. Sal's is a must. Hands down, one of my favorite restaurants. The pizza is amazing, made so by an awesome crust. If you feel like branching away from pizza, the pastas are great, but the cheesesteak is where it's at! If you haven't had one, you must try it. I seriously can't eat one anywhere else, which living in Chicago and traveling frequently makes life difficult. I like Sal's a lot.!!! The pizza is very good but the pasta is even better.. Sauce is very fresh with great tomato taste and not a bunch of spices.. The pasta is never over cooked.. Italian sausage really tastes like Italian Sausage with fennel.. The wine list is more generic than anything else but, hey, it's Sal's so you're not going to find those expensive bottles.!! Hands down better food and a far more pleasurable experience than Crozet Pizza where "Attitude Reigns Supreme." I swear if you sit at Sal's long enough you'll see virtually every citizen of Crozet, Virginia come in and eat. Is it the greatest Italian place on the planet? Nope.! But it's good, reasonably priced food in a wonderfully homey atmosphere. Worth the trip.!! read more

The pizza is pretty good, not the best. However do not order the Caesar salad. We asked for no chicken but still got charged the full $10 for it, and it had no salad dressing. So we paid $10 for lettuce, soggy croutons, and it was covered in garlic. So disgusting and a ripoff. read more

The way I see it is, if you are a Crozetian, you either like Crozet Pizza or Sal's. There is no exchanging one for the other. I am a Sal's gal through and through, although I must divulge that I have never ever dined in nor have I ever had more than two types of their pizza. We always get a large white pizza with feta and artichokes. It is always amazing --- the crust is super delicate and delicious. Yes, the sticker shock can be a bit much at first, but when you open the box and see that you have four meals worth of pizza, the price is really quite reasonable. read more

Tried it again with my family and it was slightly better, but the quality of the food was just off. Would have had better food if I went to the frozen isle of Harris Teeter. They have the basis of being a better place if they could improve the quality of the reciies. read more

The family run place has a friendly atmosphere and they remember you each time you come back That being said I have been eating at Sal's for many years and have never been disappointed I have to say I am a born and raised Philadelphian pizza eater - very picky !! Good pizza. We have found that it is good to ask them to make the crust crisp, otherwise the center of the pizza can be soggy. Subs are good and are served on home made bread. Fries don't come with the subs so once you add the fries it jacks up the price, which drives my husband crazy! The quality is consistent. The staff is friendly and there is a nice family friendly atmosphere, but we tend to order our food to go from this place because, while the kitchen looks clean, the dinning area is often not. They used to have a slice of cheese pizza on the kids menu for 1$ which was awesome....suddenly it changed to 3$. Once again this made hubby unhappy. He's not cheap...I promise:) read more

I have been to Sal's a lot over the last 8 years since I moved to Crozet and its been a great place to eat. I came in last week on a Tuesday around 11:30 am and sat down and put in our order for a pizza. When it came it the pizza crust wasn't done all the way and it was if the toppings were added after the pizza was out the oven. I don't know what happened but someone dropped the ball. Best pizza I have ever had. Is now my new favourite. And this is coming from a fat girl who lived in Richmond and tried it all. The crust is perfect. I never leave leftover crust, and that's saying something. The sauce is good. (I usually get pizza w/ NO sauce b/c I never like the sauce) The cheese.... ah, the glorious cheese. It's somehow *buttery*, and freakydeakin delicious. The pepperoni is good - not that weird bologna-tasting garbage like Dominoes. Even the grease is good. In the search for good pizza, Sals doesn't even come close. The crust tasted like cardboard and the sauce lacked flavor. Even the kids, who will eat almost any pizza, didn't like it. We all agreed that this was a big thumbs down. We much prefer Anna's or Crozet pizza. read more

This place is awesome. Great REAL Italian dishes and great Northern style pizza. If you miss your traditional pie from back home, this is a must try! The family that runs the shop and staff are very welcoming to everyone that walks in the door, kind of reminded me of "Cheers". I love this place; it's great albeit a little pricy except for the pizzas. I have had pizza from a lot of different places and Sal's in Crozet has by far satisfied the taste buds of this pizza eater. In fact everything that I've had from there has been great! I love their Greek salad, their ziti, their antipasto, and my son goes crazy over the chicken wings and though I have not had the stromboli I understand it is super. Parking can be difficult at times but the eat is worth it, believe me. read more
