A friend and I were in Crozet attending the arts and crafts festival this weekend and decided to try a brewery in the area. This was pretty close to the park and had ample parking, so we decided to stop in for a drink. The bartender was super friendly and when he learned this was our first time in the brewery, he asked what we liked and even gave me a couple of samples to try. I opted for the the Ramble On IPA and my friend got the Groove Tangerine wheat beer. We sat inside and drank our beers, which we both really liked. You could see where they made the beer and it was a cool place to hang out and enjoy our beverages. It wasn't too crowded when we arrived,but some larger groups started coming in as we were ready to leave. If you're in the area and are thirsty, I'd recommend stopping in. read more

Brewery #452 Starr Hill has a ton of beers on tap, maybe 20? Idk it may have been more than that and like 8 of them were IPAs. I got a flight that consisted of 5 beers; a Kolsch, Vienna lager, and 3 different hazy IPAs. I liked everything but the Jomo Vienna Lager and the Deep Fuzz DIPA were my favorites. The bartender was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations. He asked about other breweries that we had went to and gave input on those too. Good dude. The game room area is really cool with a bunch of pinball machines, pop-a-shot basketball and other games. The food menu looked like it had the type of food you would want in a brewery; nachos, wings, sammiches, pizza, and other stuff like that. The first time we went here was 15 + years ago on one of our first day dates thru the Charlottesville area. It was what made us fall in love with the area. It has grown as a business, but the service is just wonderful. There if you need them, but not overwhelming. Great beer selection with something for everyone! Great spot. read more

We like Starr Hill's beers. Especially the Ramble On IPA. Lots of juicy grapefruit, pineapple, and citrus notes clock in at 7% ABV. This beer is part of the regular tap list. On this visit they also had the Last Leaf Brown Ale. Not a style many are making these days and that's a miss, so hat tip to Starr Hill. This English Brown Ale made with Virginia Maple Syrup and both vanilla notes and a malty flavor. Despite the maple syrup is was not too sweet. This was a winner. While the service is very good, the tap room is nothing special. Kinda dark and like an old school college town bar on the inside. To be fair, this location is really about being a production facility. Anyway net/net like the beer, but would not go out of my way to come to this location. read more

Got to visit the Crozet location and it's a big one with a wrap around bar, plenty of tables and a stage. There's windows for walls inside so you can see the brew making process too. Be sure to bring some food with you too much on but on certain days, they have pizza slices so be sure to look ahead on that one. Great kid friendly spot as they have a small play area with toys and crayons. Nice touch for the beer loving parents out there like us! We had their Tripel Note which is amazing at 8.5% ABV but served in a pint glass, yay! Also went home with a four pack of cans from their cooler section to enjoy later. Dog lovers can bring their fuzzy friends to the outdoor sitting area and they have water dishes for them. read more

It's really not far from Charlottesville. 15 minutes and you're there. All. Dry good beers. Had the sours before and they were all solid. Just had the stouts - milk coffee, raspberry, and hazelnut. All excellent. Try mixing the milk coffee and hazelnut for a real treat. Only downside is no food served or we would have drank more beer. Once in a while the food truck is there. 3.5/5 Multiple visits. Our first visit here was just so-so but I'm glad we came back. When we arrived on a Friday afternoon the bar was fairly busy but was ably served by good bartenders. All of the beer was fairly good but I particularly enjoyed the Lizzie lime and the easy seam. Despite the decent-sized groups that we're coming and going we were never neglected and always well-served. Well it's slightly off the beaten path for most of the Nelson County breweries it's well worth the trip. I would definitely recommend it trip. read more

As good as it gets! I am probably the only person who LOATHES IPA's! They are sharp and bitter and I've been to several breweries in NOVA that ONLY do IPA's because they are the fastest to brew and bring to sale. But there are tons of people who don't like them. It's like medicine, avoid when you can. NOW, they offered a Stout that was chocolaty, smooth, no aftertaste and rich. PERFECT!! I got 2 COWLERS of it to take home it was that good! Thank you for remembering that most of the beer drinking world doesn't drink IPAs. Your stout was almost as good as Guinness. Guinness is a MEAL in a glass with 200 years more brewing, but you're coming up fast!! Try Pilsners, dunkles, and more! There is a WORLD of beers out there to try!! Keep up the good work!! read more

Stopped here on A Friday afternoon. The place wasn't to crowded and there was plenty of parking. There was indoor and outdoor seating with a food truck outside. The place is kind of industrial with the brewery in the back. The interior had glass windows to see what the people were doing The bartender was a nice guy and quick to serve and explain the flights. We had a flight that included Jomo, warehouse, debut 11, crozet gold and sublime. Unfortunately didn't like any of them. This local craft brewery offers a solid line-up of quality beer on tap. If you ever find yourself in Charlottesville, it's worth a visit. We opted to sample a variety of different beers. The Blackthorn (Irish Export Stout) was our favorite - it's smooth with hints of espresso and chocolate and served at just the right temperature! The Jomo (Vienna Lager) is a safe and dependable choice - it's smooth, crisp, and refreshing. The Northern Lights (IPA) was reasonably good - it's a well balanced IPA with a mild level of hoppiness. I typically don't enjoy strong IPA's, so this was the perfect brew for me in the IPA style. The remainder of our rotation failed to impress. The Front Row (Golden Ale) and Warehouse (Pilsner) were too light and flavorless for my palate. The girlfriend sampled their Blueberry Hill and Lola (guava flavored) beers. Eh... the cardinal rule of beer drinking is, never fruit your beer. She enjoyed the Blueberry Hill, but not the Lola - I enjoyed neither. I can't ask for a much better beer experience than this. I visited on a hot Wednesday afternoon after a hike; no other customers to be found. Allie was a tremendous bartender, she knew the beer, we had a great conversation, and she was very friendly and engaging. I probably tried about eight different beers. The Northern Lights was outstanding, and I got into the Hook and the Grateful as well. All were full of flavor, but still easily drinkable. Even the ones I didn't love, like the Red and the Double IPA, I could recognize they were still very good quality. Even though SH is two hours away from me without traffic, I can easily myself coming back here every couple of months. read more

Starr Hill is a nice place to visit with a friend to relax with a beer. The ambiance is warm and comfortable. The hanging lights and eclectic wall hangings set the mood to get together and enjoy each other's company. It's the perfect setting to sit back and enjoy a live band, which is usually performing to entertain the crowd. My friends and I tasted a few beers, and my personal favorite was the vanilla stout, which was dark, rich, and creamy. It was great to sip on my beer while enjoying the band's live performance. Somehow had never been to Starr Hill until now, though I had tried several of their beers and enjoyed them. We went on a Sunday afternoon, with my husband's brother and our baby in tow, arriving around 4pm, in time to catch most of the live music. All three of us got flights, and I always like the breweries that let you choose your own flight rather than having a set flight list. There were a lot of beers to choose from so it was easy to find 5 for my flight, and hard to keep it to just 5, but luckily all three of us sampled each other's choices. I enjoyed 3 out of 5 of my beers, and 2 of them were REALLY good, the SLAM! Dunkelweizen and the Rylander rye altbier. The other two beers weren't bad but I wouldn't order again, and that's just how it is everywhere, and why you get a flight to sample. The vibe was casual, family friendly and fairly intimate and the band playing was really enjoyable and just the right volume . There's outdoor seating but you're just sitting watching cars go by, which I would say is one downfall: no views. I would be more likely to revisit this brewery for the tasty beers if I also knew I could sit and enjoy the mountains (that are just behind the opposing building). Luckily there's a sweet mural on that hulk of a building, but it doesn't quite make up for feeling like you're sitting on the shoulder of the road in an industrial estate. read more

I went to Starr Hill on 8/5/17 after a very full day of drinking in the area. The ambiance of this place is "industrial casual". The tasting room (bar) is a good size. I was impressed at the number of staff working (because I was there rather late in the day). Needless to say, I never felt ignored. I liked the fact that you can choose a flight from any of their beers available. I liked the beers (tried mostly IPAs) but nothing really stood out to me taste wise. Starr Hill felt a little isolated from the other breweries in the area. That being said they seem cater to people who are local and love their beer (because they were busy even late in the day). In a nutshell, I am glad I tried Starr Hill. Due to the fact, I feel like their name is always mentioned within the "craft beer scene". read more

There was a stage with an acoustic artist playing some covers and some originals. The side wall opposite of the entrance was partly glass windows where you can see the fermentation tanks. The bar required beers to be ordered in one location, which was unique. The beer line was at the bar and moved quickly. There was a cool outside area with corn hole tables and a food truck. Several years ago, husband and I were introduced to Starr Hill beer by his UVA-attending Cuzzo and her husband, and we've never looked back. Their wedding reception was in the Colonnade Club on The Lawn, Everything was the band (who got the hooch?, indeed), and Starr Hill was the beer of choice. It was all very Charlottesville. (Tho the brewery outgrew its Charlottesville digs a few years ago and moved to Crozet.) And we'll be forever grateful for the introduction to Starr Hill's excellent brews. We've been fans ever since our first taste, picking ours up on the regular at local outlets. So when I discovered that the brewery was in Crozet and we were going to be in the area, I put it in ink on our itinerary. Four of us arrived at the brewery -- a squat white building, formerly a frozen food plant -- just in time for a 1:00 tour on a Saturday (I didn't think it was hard to find, but others have mentioned having difficulty; just look for the Starr Hill logo). Our tour guide, Bill, was a hoot. Deadpan delivery, big personality, and a true command of both beer brewing and Starr Hill's suds. He toured us around the facility for about 20 minutes before unleashing us at the tasting bar. The tour itself is nice, but the best part -- obviously -- is bellying up at the bar for samples of whatever's on tap. On our visit they were offering their standards of Northern Lights IPA, Jomo Lager, Amber Ale Irish Red, Festie Amber Lager, and Dark Starr Stout. Also on tap were a few reserve brews: Amber Lights Anniversary Ale (a blend of Amber Ale and Northern Lights, in honor of the brewery's 11th anniversary this November), Double Platinum (a double IPA), and the Monticello Reserve Ale (and unfiltered wheat). Husband loves their Northern Lights, and was particularly taken with the Double Platinum. My favorite SH beer is The Love Wheat Beer, which wasn't on tap, but it was nice to try Festie for the first time since I'd never seen it before. I also liked the Monticello Reserve. Tours and tastings are *free*. It almost seems like robbery considering how much fun we had and how much beer we got to drink. We've always really liked Starr Hill, but having such an enjoyable visit here made it a new favorite. read more

Starr Hill is Firkin Awesome! So was the firkin they had specially prepared just for our group! Great beer... can't go wrong! Seriously they are warm and inviting and tons of fun! I got to visit here on a local brew tour I took from the Blue Toad and this brewery is just top notch! I don't think I actually saw a tasting room in all honesty because we got taken to the back of their warehouse to help kick a keg of their seasonal and a firkin they added more vanilla too... omg... yes! We were right in the midst of everything it seemed. The brewery is nestled right up against the train tracks and it was such a beautiful day that they had the side doors open to see outside. Trains are a thing of childhood memories but they are just as cool to watch as an adult speeding by with empty coal carts. It went on forever! The brewery itself was very clean and had an open layout, there looked to be some construction going on... but I was having too good of a time to really ask about things. They aren't setup like some breweries that have an actual room with a bar and seating area (maybe that was what was under construction), but they are still pretty cool to explore and easy to be around. Great beers in a chill/relaxing setting. When we went, it was right when it opened, and we were able to chat with the bartender at length about what they prefer, and what they suggest. We tried basically all their beers between the me and my friend, some were very good, some were not as great, but still decent. I'm not a big fan of dark beers, but the bartender suggested one she thought I would like and it was spot on! Towards the end of our time there a food truck was begging to set up and the more and more people were coming for their Friday afternoon beer and the mood in the building changed, but it was good!!! read more

Favorite Brewery So Far Because of 2 Employees... Recently my wife and I visited SH for the 1st time. We walked in and, from the word go, were blown away by the décor and offerings in the gift shop. From there, it only got better, as we approached the bar, we were greeted by Taylor and Marta. From that point on, the experience became AWESOME. Taylor and Marta were 2 of the best, most friendly servers we have ever had the privilege of meeting at ay brewery. The wife and I had alot questions since we are fairly new to the brewery scene, (other breweries we have visited have acted like we were bothering them didn't have the time to answer questions) These 2 were the exact opposite. because of Marta and Taylor, we will return for; Days, Months and Years to come. The Beer was even better, How can you go wrong, Awesome Beer that goes along with AWESOME Service.. From now on, I will make sure all I buy is Starr Hill products. read more

Wow, looking for Starr Hill is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Well...not exactly. But the place is so unassuming. You would have thought the place was an abandoned building right next to the train tracks (like literally!) haha! Anyway, as soon as you gain the courage to enter a signless door, you find yourself in a wonderfully exciting beer factory! Ok....a brewery...for you technical people!! I'm been to the Heineken plant in Amsterdam, and I've roamed the beer halls of Munich's Oktoberfest. But neither felt so intimate as my experience at Starr Hill. You really see their operations! They offer free tours (and you learn a lot about the beer making process) and tastings of the beers they have on tap. We were able to taste 6 last time. Its all free, so be a kind soul and tip! I loved the Love and Lucy beers. The Love is like a hefeweizen. The Lucy is a lighter beer with a citrusy taste. I don't know much about Starr Hill, but it seems like they are relatively new. The people there are very knowledgeable and are happy to discuss beer with you. When I went, they had an indoor green house or something going on. They were growing chilies and other stuff. They were going to use it for a new flavor that should be out later this year. I can't wait! I love spicy drinks! I think it's going to be called Home Grown or something like that. If you're in the Charlottesville area, I highly recommend it. It's a nice alternative from all the wineries. =) read more

Craft Brewery with tours. We happened to go on an Anniversary date, which meant they had a food truck (Farm Fresh Fixins) there and Chiles Peach Orchard giving away free APPLE CIDER DONUTS! You're able to see their brewing facility right in the main lobby/drinking area/bar, with large windows across half of the brewery, which is fantastic. They have 2 different types of beer tastings: one of their traditional year-round brews (they call this the Classic), and the other is more eclectic (I forgot the name, sorry) with higher IPA's in it. $5 for 5 very large samples (we just couldn't handle anymore alcohol and had to split it between 3 people). We sampled the Classic, but I wasn't very impressed (hence the 3-Stars), but like wine, beer is subjective and I am not a craft beer expert. The A/C was pumped way way low, so we opted to sit and enjoy the beautiful weather. Not many people when we were there around 2-3pm, so plenty of seating...we even saw several families bring their kids as we were leaving. *TVs to watch games, private lot, clean establishment & restrooms. *Service was so-so. The young lady kind of looked un-amused and not trying to do any type of explaining (or smiling) except to pour beer. read more

One of my favorite breweries in the area, Starr Hill Brewery is a hip and modern brewery with an excellent selection of home-crafted beers. I honestly wouldn't have made the drive to Crozet if not for an excellent Groupon (tour, sampler, and two beer glasses for $12). Shame on me for not coming here sooner - the atmosphere here is laid back and contemporary, with a cool looking tasting room, plenty of outdoor seating, and the occasional food truck. The tasting room looks out onto the brewing and bottling floor, which coupled with the brewery's proximity to the train tracks gives it a real domestic industrial vibe. But how was the beer? While none of the flavors really stood out to me as exceptional (in fact some tasted very similar to others), there's enough diversity and great beers here to keep even the most seasoned beer taster satisfied. I was a fan of The Love (Hefeweizen), the Grateful Pale Ale, and the two Wit beers (there was also one beer that tasted exactly like coffee, which was very tasty and may be the first breakfast beer I've ever tried). Overall, Starr Hill Brewery is definitely worth the short drive from Charlottesville to visit. The new facilities and variety/quality of beer makes it a must visit for beer aficionados. read more

My friends and I visited Starr Hill Brewery on a Sunday afternoon the day after my wedding in nearby Orange. There are a lot of vineyards in the area, but my husband is a beer enthusiast, so we planned a mini tour of a variety of local breweries in the area. Hands down we had the best time at Starr Hill, which was the first stop in our trip. We began our visit with a tour of the brewery, which was really fun and informative. It was cool to get a behind-the-scenes look at how beer is made, which I didn't really know much about. Afterwards, my group shared two orders of the tasting samplers, which was honestly a steal at only $6 each. After visiting some other breweries, we realized Starr Hill offered the best value, taste, and ambiance out of them all, and we all agreed we should have just stayed instead of even visiting the other disappointing places we went to. I noticed a Groupon for Starr Hill available a few months ago, but didn't get it because I wasn't we'd actually make the trip out to the area, but honestly even without it, the prices were very reasonable and I was still able to get a souvenir pint glass for only $3. Finally checked out Starr Hill Brewery. They have a great selection of beers, with several not in circulation, at the brewery itself. I liked their milk stout, wheat beer, and lagers. I recommend you get a sampler (fill out a card at the bar). Reasonable prices. Friendly bar tenders. When you enter you will place your order for drinks at specific order station at the bar. The brewery is very child and dog friendly (both indoors and outdoors!). The brewery looks huge from the outside but most of the space is for actual brewing. The interior is much smaller than you would think. The outdoor patio is large and has space for a food truck which seems to be present most days after 5. On Saturday, there was a food truck serving delicious cubanos and tortas. Both were delicious with particularly good fries. While a little out of the way from cville, Starr Hill is definitely worth checking out. read more
