hot dog
Dan B.

Salsa Grill is an eatery located of of Route 53 in Addison. Upon walking in there's a few tables set up, a TV and an ordering counter. I noticed a Vienna Beef sign on the corner of their window in passing by earlier in the week and decided I would have to visit and try the hot dogs. The employees were friendly and took my order and very soon it was brought to my table. The hot dog I received came on a regular non-poppy seed bun. The bun was soft but showed signs of dryness. A pickle easily as thick or thicker than the hot dog itself sat on top of the sandwich. There was noticeable celery salt, and a heck of a lot of mustard. The onion and relish were relatively sparse compared to the mustard. The tomato was chopped up salsa style which is a nice way to apply them in my opinion. The peppers included on the hot dog weren't too hot and were a good compliment. The sausage itself was a skinless frank, it was warm and tasty. Overall the big problem with the hot dog here was waaaay too much mustard, a pickle larger than the sausage so it was more like eating a pickle sandwich with a hot dog on it rather than the other way around. This place has a wild amount of diversity in their menu, selling the following types of food. Hot dogs, burgers, Pizza, Taco's, Burritos, Italian Beefs, Qusedillas, Salads. Perhaps they should narrow the menu down to a few items they do well and go from there.

Couldn't find anything to eat in the area. Gave this a try for a quick carne asada quesadilla. Delicious.

They have a surprisingly wide array of things on the menu from Mexican classics like carne asada and burritos to a pretty kickass Philly cheesesteak.

Also had the El Elote and these were not exactly my favorite version. There was a mix of several flavors. My main lunch was the Pescado Frito which I decided could actually be the best fish tacos I've ever had. Would definitely return for this dish. Needed a dessert so tried the Date Pudding. Expecting something resembling a pudding, was a little surprised that the dish was really a cake. Very tasty and definitely needed the ice cream on the side. Overall, was pleased with the offerings. Cost might have been a little steep for a casual lunch, but then again I did order several items.

The restaurant is medium sized, clean, and spacious, with a wide variety of menu options. They offer brunch, lunch, dinner, desserts, and happy hour which is a nice bonus. I do wish the happy hour details were listed on a menu or somewhere visible. Our server, who was new, let us know that margaritas were half of and only select tacos were $2 for taco Tuesday. We each ordered a margarita, which was deliciously only $6 each. For starters, we shared the "Los Tres Diaz" platter, which includes guacamole, elote and fish ceviche served with chips. Everything was fresh and flavorful and great way for two people to sample a bit of everything. As for the tacos, the happy hours election wasn't as appealing so I opted for the shrimp tacos. Instead, the order came with three good size tacos and although the rice and beans are available as an add-on they don't come with a meal. The highlight was definitely the mango pineapple, pico de gallo, and added so much flavor. Overall, we had a great experience. The food was delicious. The service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxed. I'd definitely come back.

I was greeted immediately and enjoyed the ambience. A bit old, but still nice. It even looked like they had an windowed view spot where we could see....what... the tortillas, maybe, being made? A good sign. I was sat in a very lonely spot, at the far backside of the restaurant on the only 2-person table I saw. Oh, wonderful. It appeared the table hadn't been completely wiped clean, so I asked a busboy to wipe it down - he very promptly complied- nice. Ok- as the menus came, so did the tortilla chips and homemade salsa- wow. The chips were THICK and the sauce was really good- albeit a bit spicy (not a crime!). The waitress came over, introduced herself, and I promptly ordered their special drink- the "Mexican Mai-Tai". Gotta say it was good! I ordered off their special menu- enchiladas tomatillo with pollo (chicken). I swear, less than 2 minutes later came a small bowl of soup (not expected, but ok) - then less than 5 minutes after ordering the main? Came the main! The beans and rice were nice; it came with a bit of shredded lettuce- and the 3 enchiladas were not bad. At all. Definitely satisfied my craving for Mexican food! Why the demerits? The holy grail of any restaurant is always the service. Once I completed the mains, the busboy quickly took the dishes off the table. And then I waited. And waited. I flagged down a busboy and asked for my check- he said he'd flag down my waitress. And then I waited. After 15 minutes, I bagged it. I put on my jacket and went to the host desk and complained. Though I was able to pay at the front desk, why did I have to wait? What was so important on a not-so-busy Saturday night that meant I had to wait for my bill? Just awful, La Hacienda. I don't mind waiting a few minutes (most restaurants have this awful habit of making diners wait too long for their bills anyway, right?). But 15 minutes? And even after I pointed this out I still waited to no avail? No diner should ever be asked to wait until they "got around to it". Would I come again? Naw. Sorry, but even though the early part of the meal was great and I was speed-served the food? The finish killed it for me.
