We got there around 10pm, and the line wasn't too long. I got their sea salt and double fold vanilla ice cream, which was the perfect combo, and let me tell you why! The sea salt ice cream itself is pretty salty because of the Guatemalan salt they use, but the caramel is strong and has the perfect sweetness, giving it that sweet-and-salty balance. Since I found the ice cream a bit more on the salty side, I wanted something sweeter, which is why the vanilla was the perfect addition. This is hands down one of the best vanilla ice creams I've had because I could really taste the vanilla bean flavor (it's called "double fold" for a reason). We love visiting Salt & Straw and other ice cream places, but when we visit OC, there's almost nothing available besides the Salt & Straw in Downtown Disney, which has the most inconvenient parking situation. However, when we learned that there's a new location that opened in Newport, we were ecstatic! Now when I come to the area, I always stop by with friends and family to try seasonal flavors and enjoy classics. Service is always friendly and efficient even with the long lines, plus the shop never fails to exhibit their vintage, classic interior design of their branding. The shop itself is kind of small and the line extends out the door like most locations, but everyone has a fun time. You're lured in with the smell of waffle cone batter and the unique ice cream flavor combinations! I love a kid's scoop on a waffle cone or a split scoop in a cup. Salt & Straw has so many flavors it almost makes it hard to decide, but the samples the girl gave me behind the counter, helped a lot. I ended up with chocolate almond gold bar and chocolate brownie together and that was a good call. The chocolate almond gold bar is creamy chocolate with little almond bits and caramel mixed in, kind of like a frozen candy bar. Then the chocolate brownie scoop is deeper and richer with soft brownie chunks all through it. Eating them together works really well because one is smooth and sweet and the other is heavier and fudgy, so every bite tastes a little different. The only downsides were that the waffle cone wasn't crunchy as it's supposed to be, it was pretty soft. But I felt like after asking for three samples, it was awkward asking for a fourth sample so I just settled on salted caramel vanilla without sampling. After my second sample, the woman serving me asked "you want another sample?" in such an unwelcoming manner. Even my husband thought she gave me attitude for no reason. But whatever. Now I'm not saying that employees need to be extra joyful but when finally reaching the front to order the employee almost never looked up at us and in no way greeted us. After a long beach day my wife, our friend, and I wanted something cold so of course we went to Salt and Straw. We have been here plenty of times but this time we wanted to try all the seasonal Halloween flavors. We sampled the Great Candy Copia, Jack O Lantern Pumpkin Bread, Creepy Crawly Critters, Essence of Ghosts, and Double Double Toil and Trouble. Candy Copia was the one I ended up going with and honestly it was by far the best. It is like a vanilla caramel swirl loaded with different candies, I think Snickers or Twix or M and Ms or Oreos or cookies, I do not even remember but every bite was thick, creamy, crunchy, and smooth all at once. I basically licked the bowl. That is a flavor I would 100 percent go back for. The Jack O Lantern Pumpkin Bread was also good. They had chunks of actual pumpkin bread or pumpkin pie in there and it had great texture but it was not my favorite even though I still enjoyed it. The last three were not really for me. Creepy Crawly Critters just had a funky vibe and I am not a big chocolate person to begin with. Essence of Ghosts was even more out there. I remember hearing the ingredients and it had licorice and some kind of alcohol element and I just tried it for fun but yeah that was definitely not it. As for their regular flavors, they always switch things out but the Cinnamon Snickerdoodle is my go to every single time. It is seriously one of my favorites of all time. I also really like the Chocolate Gooey Brownie even though I am not a chocolate lover at all. And the Hazelnut Cookies and Cream which is vegan is honestly so good too. Cookies and cream never misses and the hazelnut gives it something extra.
