Huuugeeee fan of Stella Jean's but I've been frequenting their other Costa Mesa location, not knowing there's one closer to me at The Lab! Parking can be a pain because of the mall location but the ice cream makes it worth it. My go - to is always the ube pandesal and I like to sample their seasonal items. Currently, their guava cheesecake is very yummy. A split scoop costs $6.75 and they are decent sized scoops. Service here is hit or miss. Sometimes you get a pleasant worker and other times you'll get someone who is merely there doing a job and can't even manage to crack a smile. I really can care less though because the ice cream is just so good and makes up for it. They do let you sample. Indoor only has standing tables but if you walk outside the store there are plenty of cute places to sit and enjoy your ice cream within The Lab. read more

This ice cream shop is located inside The Lab complex. It's a small enclosed shop with a wacky interior and three tall tables to stand up at. If you want to sit down to eat your ice cream, you have to find a place to sit at one of the random tables located throughout The Lab. I was warmly greeted as I walked in and looked over the unique flavors; I think there were 14 or so. I decided on two scoops of two different flavors: Madagascar Vanilla and S'mores. I found a table to sit down and dove into the ice cream. Admittedly, Madagascar Vanilla was probably the most boring choice I could have made, but the bold vanilla flavor was delicious. The S'mores was exactly what you'd expect: chocolate ice cream with bits of chocolate, marshmallow, and graham cracker throughout. The vanilla was more dense than most ice creams I've had, yet fresh and smooth. The S'mores was definitely more creamy and yummy. I'd rate this ice cream 4.5 rounded up. read more

In the spirit of transparency, let me just start by saying that my visit to Stella Jean's actually came a little while back. However, even though I'm only posting this now (before it gets any later), I actually had most of this written out for a while. So why the delay? Because I'm so far in the minority, I figured I would wait until I could come back and see if my first trip was a fluke and/or if it was just the flavors I tried. Sadly, though, while the parking gods usually look favorably upon me, they've forsaken me every time we've tried to come back when we're in town! On the surface, everything about Stella Jean's is right up my alley - the shop is cuzy and cute, their flavors are unique, and they source their ingredients from a lot of great purveyors, like Valrhona Chocolate and Califia Farms. More importantly, their selection of flavors looked super promising. Alongside their menu mainstays, like Mango Sticky Rice, Strawberry Oat Crumble, and Ube + Pandesal Toffee, they also feature a handful of rotating seasonal offerings which are equal parts unique and interesting. What's more, for anyone that has dietary sensitivities and/or preferences, they always have several options that are vegan, gluten-free, or both. -- UBE & PANDESAL TOFFEE - Ube, Pandesal (Filipino Sweet Bread), and Toffee As evidenced by its intensely purple coloring, this had a strong taste of ube to it, which I really liked. The toffee nicely balanced that earthy sort of flavor, but I didn't get much of the pandesal, though, maybe I just missed scooping some. -- MANGO STICKY RICE - Mango Sorbet, Pandan, and Coconut Milk Compared to the other flavors we had, this felt crisp and so much lighter. The sorbet was a nice reprieve from how creamy everything else was and I liked how refreshing the mango tasted. Solid. -- SALTED MAPLE + BANANA BREAD - Maple Syrup, Chocolate Chunk, Banana Bread, Sea Salt, and Coconut Milk This flavor had me the most excited, but it fell a bit short. While I loved the combination of the chocolate and banana bread, the maple syrup was too much. Not only did it make this too sweet, but it overpowered everything, including the scoop of Apple Butter Crumble. -- APPLE BUTTER + CRUMBLE - Green Apple, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Apple Butter, Oat Crumble, Sea Salt, and Coconut Milk Pretty cool how this felt like eating a scoop of apple pie a la mod in a single scoop. The mix of flavors was pretty classic, but it also felt oddly subtle. That being said, it may have had more to do with the Salted Maple & Banana Bread blending with/overwhelming this one. Besides how overly sweet a couple of the flavors were, the other thing that dampened our experience was the service. More specifically, the guy who helped scoop our ice cream, as he seemed generally annoyed for some reason. I'm not sure why he would be with us, as we only asked to try a couple of samples each compared to the couple ahead of us who tried three or four per person, but he seemed like he was eager to get us in and out of there ASAP. Also, FWIW, he seemed just as bothered with the couple behind us, so maybe he was just dying to go home. Between how nearly everyone that's been to Stella Jean's has fallen in love with them and how the Salted Maple + Banana Bread was the only real problematic flavor we tried, I really do think we just got the wrong flavors. Maybe a bit of bad timing as well, considering how all of their current seasonal flavors sound fantastic - Banana Turon Crunch, Guava Cream Cheese, Matcha + Pandan Birthday Cake, and Pineapple Fog. Either way, I feel almost compelled to try to visit Stella Jean's again the next time we're out this way. Just maybe their other location in Costa Mesa instead of this one. Not sure if I should admit this or not but I had never heard of Stella Jean's Ice Cream before last night so when my group of friends wanted to go after dinner I thought why not? We walked from a local brewery and were told we were lucky to walk into the ice cream shop with only 3 customers ahead of us. Sure enough, right after our group arrived and then for a solid 30+ minutes after, there was a steady line out the door! The flavors were some of the most unique I had experienced based on included ingredients, like caramelized egg roll wrappers. The best deal seemed to be the "Split Scoop". You'd think it would be the same size as a single scoop but just in two flavors but not at Stella Jean's! It's almost a double scoop and for less than a dollar more. I didn't know that until my friend after me ordered. I was disappointed at first but my ice cream flavor, Strawberry Oat Crumble, was quite sweet so I don't think I could have eaten more than my single scoop so I am happy I stuck with that decision! I really enjoyed this new spot and had fun sitting in the common seating area of the Anti-mall LAB area since there is no seating inside. Only bar top tables. Yikes. I was suckered in by the gulab jamun flavour but this was such an absolutely disappoint. It tasted so bland and whatever was supposed to be gulab jamun was this nasty, almost cardboard-like jamun. I could not taste any of the sugar syrup or rose (the gulab part of the gulab jamun). Located at the every edge of the LAB, it can be a bit hard to find, but the interior is incredibly charming and has 3 tables you can stand at to eat and chat! I personally got the banana Turon crunch, and as someone who personally does not like banana flavored items, I absolutely loved this since it's had no artificial flavor and the banana puree throughout made it more reminiscent of an actual Turon treat. The staff were very kind and welcoming. They let us sample any flavor we wanted to which was great! The shop was clean and bright. I ordered a kids scoop of Mango Sticky Rice and my partner ordered a scoop of Strawberry Oat Crumble. We shared and felt satisfied with the portions. Overall, highly recommend! This shoppe was a nice surprise. They had Filipino and Asian inspired flavors. My favorite is the mango sticky rice. I loved the tartness of the mango. You could taste a little bit of salt with the cream. We also got the ube pandesal ice cream and it reminded me of my dad's ice cream sandwiches. I love you Stella Jean's Ice Cream. Baklava cheesecake is a must try. SO good. Stella Jean's lets to sample all their flavors, and their cheesecake flavor is love at first bite. Just enough cheesy taste, but not too overpowering. But it's the little chunks mixed into the ice cream that gives it a creamy, sweet & salty flavor. Genius! Just for my ice cream alone, I give Stella Jean's five stars. The place itself is cute and modern, but rather small. Wish they had more seatings but we were still able to enjoy our sweet treats. Stella Jean's is such a find, especially if you or someone you are with is gluten free. My partner is gluten free and when she realized they had gluten free waffle cones she was so excited. She told me she didn't think she'd ever be able to have a waffle cone again. That alone made this place worth the visit. We both got split scoops. I went with cookies and cream and brown butter pecan. She got brown butter pecan and strawberry oat crumble. The brown butter pecan was the clear winner for both of us, absolutely delicious. The strawberry oat crumble was a hit for her though I personally found the strawberry flavor a little too punchy for my taste, but I'm just not a fruit in my dessert person so take that with a grain of salt. I also sampled the s'mores but the chewy marshmallow texture in ice cream isn't really my thing. The girl working was doing it all on her own, scooping and ringing people up, and she was incredibly attentive the whole time. Great work ethic. First time visiting this location at the LAB, and it was easy to find since it's right at the entrance, next to Bred's Hot Chicken. There was only one person on staff, and she was friendly and welcoming, taking her time with each group despite the line that emerged. Also, she was super generous with samples, which made the experience fun. I hate when places don't allow samples, and you have to gamble on a scoopful of flavor you might not like. I love the ice cream flavors at Stella Jean because they're unique and not overly sweet. I usually expect something like s'mores-style flavors to be sickeningly sweet because of marshmallows, but that wasn't the case. We got a cup of the Ube + Pandesal Toffee and the S'mores. I noticed the texture was really interesting, almost like mochi or a springy marshmallow. It also didn't melt quickly. Mine barely started melting when I had about 15% left, which is impressive.
