Celebrated our 27th at the restaurant, both the service and the food were excellent. It was only the second night with the brand new menu, we had the toasted Demi baguette with baked brie as the appetizer which was excellent. I had the Mahi Mahi with no complaints, my wife had the Crab Stuffed Haddock and it was amazing very uniquely prepared with it all wrapped in a pastry and quick fried. Where to start at this fresh seafood Haven? This place is always buzzing and should you give it a shot you'll know why. It is at once touristy yet adored by locals. Large windows overlooking the Piscataqua River make for a lovely relaxing setting. Craft cocktails, check. Ultra thick and rich chowder, check. Devoured the King crab cocktail practically de shelled served with a remoulade. The beer batter fish and chips was a very large piece of cod, reminiscent of the quality in Ireland, served a top of fine thin french fries. My mom and I dined at salt for lunch and we couldn't be more pleased and satisfied! We sat at the bar for a more casual experience and the food, service and ambiance did not disappoint! The mussels were incredible, I could've drank the left over broth! We opted for something sweet after and decided on the blackberry focaccia with a berry ricotta...oh my goodness...I was floored. Such a beautiful building and property. The lounge has an upscale vibe. We waited entirely too long to even get a menu, we were getting up to leave and (I'm assuming) the manager asked if we had been welcomed yet. Another 5 min or so, we were greeted. The bar was busy- but there were servers tending to the tables surrounding us that wouldn't even make eye contact with us. Hubs & I ended up splitting the farmers table (charcuterie board) and each had a glass of wine. The charcuterie board description talks about being local, but I guess that was just the meat/cheese (which were good) but the honey and strawberry jam labels read CA. We arrived a bit early for our reservation and were offered an option of the high tops at a window near the bar instead of the dining room. It was a great location, except for the shopping cart of wine moved in and out of the back room, which was quite noisy on the tiles. Our server, was phenomenal! Very attentive and personable! The appetizers, Johnny crab cake and lemon poached shrimp at $20/ea., were average. The crab cake was all cornbread which was a bit overdone and very little crab. The shrimp were better however, only a few and not super tasty. I would recommend waiting for the dinner. I had the salmon on risotto (phenomenal) and my husband had the NY Sirloin with poached lobster (ridiculously tasty!). The dessert, baked Alaska, was delicious, too! We would go back again, sit in the dining room and only have dinner. read more

Just enjoyed a superlative lunch at Salt. Their Restaurant Week menu is out of this world!

Hubby and I ended our mini vacation here on 11/12/18. It was restaurant week and we were excited to try this place out. First, this is an expansive beautiful hotel with the restaurant inside. Unfortunately they were doing road pavement construction right in front of the entrance. Not a nice way to walk into such a place. Next we get in and someone says they will be right with us, however the hostess desk is hidden beyond that first door opening, so we stood there for 10 or so minutes before figuring out on our own where to go. We were seated in the main room at a small table, which is fine, except it was skewed at weird angle and right up against a column. A waiter comes to get drink orders. and disappears. After about 5 minutes another waitress arrives and takes our order, gives water and says she will check on our drinks. Another ten minutes go by and said waitress or waiter have not been back and still no drinks! Finally, the hubby waves down a gentleman that looks like a manager and he says he will go check it out. Phew! He brought us our drinks right away! Finally the waitress comes by again and asks if we want bread. Sigh,yes I do I am starving by now. Another 5 go by and we get bread. Which was very tasty! and so were the drinks! Half an hour in we finally get our apps, I had the gnocchi and hubby had a salad. Both really seasoned well and delish! 20 more minutes and we finally get entrees, yummo! Hubby had the braised beef and I had the Tuna dish. Really well cooked and again seasoned perfectly. Only complaint is that the tuna was a lil more cooked than I prefer. Another drink order in, heck its the last of the vacation, lets go for it! 20 more minutes before dessert was served. Hubby had the Tangerine tart and I have the pudding. Both really good and plated beautifully. By the time all is said and done, the food was outstanding, the waitress warmed up and was actually quite funny. However, the slow speed of service on a lazy Monday was its biggest downfall and why I could not give above the 3 stars. Almost two hours for a lunch is really not ok. Especially since they were not crazy busy! read more

We had dinner in a private room which allow our group to converse without disrupting other diners. The menu is limited and not inexpensive. My husband and I share the lobster bisque and I had the grilled mahi-mahi with polenta and ratatouille. My husband had seared diver scallops. Everything was so good. Eight waiters delivered our entrees so we were all able to start eating at the same time. We will definitely return. read more

Wonderful dinner with beautiful Christmas decorations! Our waiter Ethyn was excellent -very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu and our dietary restrictions. The hostess was so welcoming and we were enchanted by the decorated Christmas tree we could see through the window. We then checked out the awesome gingerbread house in the ballroom wing. We celebrated a birthday and it was very special for us thanks to the great service by Ethyn, the great food, and the beautiful building. Wonderful evening! read more

The advertising page in the internet show they have a Sunday buffet with music and a number for a reservation. All the page is false only the number is real unfortunately when you arrived there is no music no buffet and at that point what can the customer do but eat what ever is available. Dessert! I have never seen (or tasted) better take-away /carry-out dessert. There was a short wait for the package to be ready, but worth it - there was a masterpiece in each box! Both the salted caramel dessert and the pear fritter dessert were packed with decadent fall flavors. We'll likely comeback for a full meal soon. At pick up I noticed all of the special attention given to creating a warm, safe environment in these unusual covid times. Had dinner at the Salt, the restaurant at the Wentworth By The Sea the othe night, December 27, 2022 and for a restaurant housed in a quality hotel, the food was mediocre. Very and I mean a very menu was disappointing. When asked if there were specials, the waitress told us that the chef toned down the specials during the Holiday week for business reasons. What? And the place was packed. Must be me. With limited items on the menu, deciding what to have for dinner became a lesser of what I didn't want so I ordered seared scallops. No great shakes, but when there were about six items to choose from, it was the only item that interested me. Would have thought better of a Marriott Chef and hotel. read more

Stayed at the hotel for two nights and did dinner and lunch and both meals it took over an hour to get the food on both occasions. The salad with scallops came with 3 baby scallops. Overall portion sizes are very small and flavors of other dishes were just ok. The menu is very overpriced and limited and the service is just as bad. With so many good restaurants in Portsmouth I would not recommend eating here read more

Wow did this experience suck! I was here in 2015 and had a Bloody Mary that had shrimp and lobster in it for $20. Awesome. So I stopped by for another great Bloody Mary. I order one and got 1/2 shot of vodka in tomato juice, no spice and oh yeah one olive for $16.35. To top it off the service was horrible. When I simply asked for a cocktail napkin for my drink the bartender acted like I was asking for a kidney. What a rip off. This place has definitely made a turn for the worse. This is the second time we've visited Salt during COVID. The food is disappointing and the wines being served are old and taste off. The first time, I recall the food being edible and the atmosphere was elegant, so we tried again. We will not be returning. We started with the garlic knots and caesar salad, which were fine. These are hard to mess up, right? For entrees, we had the chicken saltimbocca and pepper crusted burger. I thought about the scottish salmon but recalled my fish entree last time being dry. So, the chicken saltimbocca- a small boneless breast wrapped in prosciutto atop plain spinach with potatoes and carrots in a salty flavorless broth. Not an essence of Madeira or demi-glace. The burger- nowhere did the description include stoneground mustard and this was all I could taste. I'm glad we didn't spend 30+ on another "feature." The wine was barely palatable, and the tap water was unfiltered, so we ordered a bottle of Pellegrino and some cocktails. The Rosalita was fine but tasted more like grapefruit juice than anything else. Decided to have a vodka soda and bounce. We did not ask for the food to go (about half was leftover), and the server did not ask how it was. The service was relatively attentive and the atmosphere is nice, so if you don't care about food or wine, you might be okay. read more

Such a shame to see Salt bar drop its quality. I've eaten in the restaurant so many times but my experience tonight was more than disappointing. Been COVID bound for a year but decided to celebrate my 55 birthday with family at my favorite place, however wish I had stayed home. I ordered a NY Strip stake which turned out to be a cheap cut of tasteless meat. The staff couldn't have been less interested that my meal was sub par and certainly not worth the $37 I paid for it. I suggest you consider going somewhere else till they get Their action together again... for sure they have lost my business! read more

We were on our Valentine's Baby Moon weekend this past weekend and our big dinner out was Friday night at Salt Kitchen and Bar (we were staying at the hotel.) It felt good to dress up for the first time since COVID. The convince was nice, having it be right downstairs but I don't know if I would eat there again... the food was ok, the menu was limited, understandably due to COVID (no seafood, and only a few items to choose from) and the service felt a bit rushed and unprofessional. Having worked in the restaurant business the server hit three of my biggest pet peeves, serving our dinner before we even finished the appetizer, leaving dirty dishes on our table after serving the next course, and clearing his plate before I was done with mine... However, the atmosphere of sitting right next to the fire was relaxing. The charcuterie board app was on point and breakfast (or room service ) was yummy and plentiful!! After ordering, it took about a half hour to receive so the food was a bit chilly by the time it got to the room, which was to be expected.. We are looking forward to returning - with a sweet little girl next time! read more

This is a breakfast only review. My wife, infant son, and I were easily able to grab a table with our two friends and their baby daughter. So already we were off to a good start! A regular continental buffet was $14 but I wanted the hot food offered in the $19 buffet. That extra food included bacon, sausage, eggs, and egg quesadillas! (quesadillas being the best menu item) Assorted pastries, omelets to order, and biscuits with gravy were also available with the hot breakfast. I thought that everything was of high quality and definitely recommend the $19 breakfast as the best option. My wife had an egg dish with lobster. She was not really a fan and wished she had the buffet instead. I tried some of it and the lobster was middle of the road. Certainly if you are a hotel guest you should come down here for breakfast! read more

A pretty good fine dining option inside Wentworth by the Sea. Seating is limited and reservations are highly recommended for dinner. The menu was sparse, but so the dishes we tried were good. Decent selection of wines. A few specialty cocktails on the menu, but was disappointed that bourbon drinks weren't in the list. The mussels were perfectly cooked, and the warm Brie was nicely done. My favorite was the lobster arrabiata - very flavorful with a slight zing to it. The lobster was cooked to perfection, and dressed up a bit to match the flavor profile of the pasta. The waiter was responsive, friendly and provided good recommendations on the menu. Enjoyable experience overall. read more

The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and out waitress was fantastic! We were so impressed with the entire meal! I got the bone in New York sirloin and It was fantastic! I never had good luck with this place. The latest visit will be our last. The staff rotate so often and they are not trained. The poor young ladies who took care of us did not know anything about the restaurant week and we had to explain the concept to them. It was awkward from then on. They forgot our drinks. Also, the acoustics in that place are so weird that I could hear the conversation behind the center bench better than when my husband talked to me. Located inside Wentworth by the Sea our team was in for a pleasant surprise. We had a private dining room and service was almost like a dream - choreographed and amazing. The food was also delicious, everything being perfectly portioned and seasoned! I was pleasantly surprised since I usually expect restaurants inside hotels to be subpar at most even with high ratings. Salt, however, surpassed all my expectations I had the risotto which was absolutely delicious and tasted amazing especially when topped with Parmesan. Salmon was also good! For dessert I had the chocolate cake and that was actually too stiff for my liking (too much crust) - the only issue in the evening. I'll definitely be back! read more

Hostess superb, charming and astute. Our server Savanna was gracious and attentive. Everything well plated and tasty. We really enjoyed the baked oysters with a cooling mignonette. They split our starter salad for us without even being asked! (my date got an extra gorgonzola panocotta, cuz I'm not into the blues.) and the N'orleans style shrimp had a sop-up-broth with crusty, chewy bread to match. Rack of lamb was deliriously delicious, maybe a little more medium than I prefer, but great sear and tang. Savanna let us substitute the peach ice cream for our shortbread dessert and it was such a good call. Coffee service excellent. Mocktail right on. Walked around the hotel hand-in-hand and soaked in the decour post meal. Nice second date. read more
