On the 14th of April, 2026: NATHAN WAKE, the GENERAL MANAGER of THE SALTGRASS RESTAURANT in San Marcos, Texas refused to give my puppies a DISPOSABLE TO-GO CUP OF WATER TO POUR INTO THEIR OWN TRAVEL PUP BOWL (that we carry with us). Something needs to be done in response to his cruelty. But, what? For over a year he has been finding reasons to scold us over my Service Dogs -- my EXTRAORDINARILY WELL TRAINED SERVICE DOGS.  We should have never returned after his first fit of abuse over my very calm, very quiet Service Dogs. But, it's the only steak house in our area. First, it was because I gave them a piece of a tomato off of my salad, with my fingers. They had no interaction with anything on the table. I gave them a tiny bite of the tomato from the salad that I purchased. This is FDA Compliant. My Disabilities don't require large Service Dogs. So, I use a pair of pomeranians. Because they're so small, I keep them in a dog stroller that also serves as a walker with wheels for me. That way, they are confined and not touching a dirty floor that may be unsanitary. If you were to ever hear them bark, know that they are calling for help, for me.  I love them with all of my heart, and they love me. So, yes, they are my fur babies, but they do have jobs to do. Out in the public, they see that people are near and watching me. They are so smart. Sometimes, we even communicate with with hand signs. Unless I'm in a surgical setting, I'm never apart from my Service Dogs. They are so accustomed to waiting in doctor's offices, they curl up and take naps. They even accompany me into the Emergency Rooms. When I'm hospitalized, they spend every day sitting and watching over me. It may sound harsh, but they only leave their stroller to go potty outside and take a walk around the hospital gardens. Pomeranians are lap dogs, so they love their stroller. Away from home, they prefer it. People passing by think that it's hilarious how they sit up and casually take in the sights. They honestly look like they're shopping in the stores. They assess and adapt to the etiquette needs in various settings. Going into a restaurant is an almost daily event for them and the only part that gets them excited is the end of the meal. As I eat, I cut off tiny pieces of meat and set them aside. I, also, save a small tomato from my salad for them. I cut it into tiny bites, also. Then, I hand feed them their little bite size treats. Their saliva never has any interaction with any of the restaurant's plates or flatware. Most of the times that we go to a restaurant, it's after a day of doctor visits. As puppies do, they get thirsty. So, we carry a handy little collapsible water bowl. When we order our teas, we order a Disposable To-Go Cup of water that we pour into their travel dish. Until now, I've never had a restaurant refuse to give me a disposable cup of water... NEVER. As a matter of fact, most restaurant's staff absolutely love my puppies. Embarrassed and mad, I actually walked out of the only steak house around me. I really looked forward to eating there. But, now, I can never return. I guess that I won't be ordering deliveries from there either. I'm stunned to have been treated like I was. Got there early so got seated without a long wait! Love that. Michelle took our drink order and our glasses were never empty! We got the stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer and they were soooo juicy, but still a lil crispy on the outside. The ribeye was a perfect medium rare and just melted in my mouth! The managers were chatting it up at the bar and not attending to the patrons waiting to be seated. They waited for the host to come up from the kitchen. The sirloin tips were topped off with a blob of brown gravy that tasted like it came out of a packet you add water and it becomes instant brown slime. The brussel sprouts were decent. Another midway point from Austin to San Antonio to celebrate ! It's about an hour from Elgin, but right off highway 35 so it makes it to easy. U just do the turnaround to come back and back to Austin. Made a reservation on open table, and they seated my family right away. The food was so good, portions generous like always, and the service good. Monday night not so busy, I think I'll come back and meet my family here again for my birthday! Absolutely the worst saltgrass in the state no joke!! Service is substandard and unprofessional. Sadly this is not the first time we have experienced problems with restaurant, but we figured after almost a year the staff would have improved or changed. Although the staff had changed the service was still horrendous! The quick version is the waiter felt it was more important to colse out another table before providing us service. The problem was he had already taken our order before he decided to close out the other table. So we had to repeatedly ask for items, some items we never recieved after multiple request. We tried being patient but had to finally requested the manager as the service was atrocious. Our request were forgotten multiple times, food was cold and food was missing from our orders. Instead of discussing the problem we were experiencing, the manager quickly instructed the waiter to give us free dessert and walked off. If you are in town take the time to find a a good restaurant. This was a special night as my daughter just graduated from TSU, and yet again this Saltgrass San Marcus ruin another special occasion. We would have gotten more professionalism at McDonald's down the street...seriously!! We went Saturday night, just happen to be graduation for Texas State. They were crazy busy. Super large groups coming to enjoy. We were seated quickly at a booth we requested. Our two different appetizers were really good. I had steak and shrimp. The two paired together were excellent. Our waitress did a great job taking care of us. The reason for the 4 star is the timing of the food. I am sure the kitchen was over whelmed. We will be back. We actually eat a Saltgrass about 4 times a month or more to be fair. So disappointed! One of my favorite dishes is (was) Chicken Loredo. And used to be juicy chicken breast topped with a ton of delicious things like cheese, avacado, etc. So good. The last THREE times I have ordered it, it has been an overcooked and charred chicken breast with a few things (very little) thrown on top. It is not even like the same dish. First time visiting and we like to order to go. Hubby ordered the redfish with shrimp and sweet potato fries, with the salad. He said it was ok. I had the sirloin steak with mashed potatoes and salad. It was good. You pick up the order from the bar and it took a little while to get the food nut it wasn't bad. Very first time trying this place and from the moment we walked in me and my family received horrible service. they were upset we had a party of 8 and the waitresses were going back and forth saying they didn't want to be the ones to serve us . we've spoke with the manager and he was no help and he was also talking about not wanting to serve us with the waitress. We had a long wait to get our order taken, long wait to get our food.. we ordered well done steaks. Every steak was not well done, excuse was because they're busy. Steaks took over 15mins to come back had to keep asking for our steak. Food came out cold. Manager just had a poorly attitude and it seemed like he did not care at all over our poor service. Order came out to $260 and they tipped their-self $40 which we don't mind but for the service we received we don't believe that was right . We went on Mother's Day for lunch. We knew there would be a wait so the hour long wait wasn't a surprise. Once we were seated we were next to the bar. Not ideal but was ok. Wow, take advantage of their great happy hour specials. We did and we will return. Courtney, the manager, came by our table twice to thank us for being a Landry's Club member. Nice touch. FOOD: Crab cake (4.5/5) was delicious. Plenty of chunky crab pieces and topped off with a white sauce that had more chunky crab pieces. Definitely with it at half the price during Happy Hour. Pat's ribeye (2/5) was disappointing. Too think, over cooked, and lacked flavor. The baked potato that came with it was quite good though. SERVICE: A complete disaster. Ordered a drink, appetizer, and small ribeye at the bar during their Happy Hour. Drink and appetizer came out relatively quickly. When the salad and steak started to take too long, I asked the waitress to check on my order which she said she did. An hour later, I asked the waitress again and now she said that there was an issue in the kitchen with my ticket and that it was coming out soon. Ribeye came out about 10 min after this but the salad never came. And the cherry on top? The ribeye was over cooked (received medium, asked for medium rare). LOCATION: Great location off the freeway with plenty of parking. NOTEWORTHY: The manager did the right thing and took the ribeye off my check. The half price appetizers during Happy Hour at the bar is a great value and everyone else in my party was happy with their appetizers and drinks. Despite having a terrible experience due to the wait of my steak and the incorrect temperature, I'll be giving this place another try next month and trying more of their appetizers during Happy Hour. Will update this review then to see if service is better. 3/15/24 Gave this place another try after my terrible experience the first time and so here's the update. The best thing about this place is their crazy half priced appetizers at the bar M-F. This time around I got to try their bacon wrapped quail (4/5) which came with brussels sprouts that were a tad too salty and their tenderloin (3/5) from the appetizer menu. The downside is that speed is still an issue. Incredibly slow. But when you have amazing crab cakes, quail, and tenderloin for less than $30... it's easy to forgive the slow speed. Review upgraded to 4-stars for the incredible value and delicious crab cakes and appetizers in general. read more
