We have visited this establishment 4 times and we loved it at first but have found out that it is a hit or miss type of place. Nothing is consistent!!! Sometimes the service is great then others it isn't. We have really only had one great food experience and the others have been either terrible or ok. Not sure if there are peek times to visit with best service and food or not but I think we will mark it off our list for now until I read other reviews of good service and quality food for the price.

We have never been and some friends wanted to go there for lunch. There were 11 of us in our party, which is definitely above the number we prefer to eat out with. Service was still timely and we had a friendly server. They seated us by the door which they left propped open and it was cold that day. Not fun at all Mike had the tacos and he chose one of each. Shrimp, catfish and chicken. He enjoyed them. They did have a lot of sauce on each one which is right up his alley, but not so much mine I got the shrimp Poboy. I ended up eating only half the bread with the shrimp because they were not enough shrimp for that large piece of bread. The shrimp were decent but compared to that large piece of bread, they weren't very big. . Nothing to write home about but OK. I had a side salad with it. They say their ranch is house made, but it does not have much flavor. This place just isn't for us. Now we know

The restaurant is housed on a public school from 1927. We found street parking right in front & wandered down the school hall passing a salon & shop. The restrooms were the old school bathrooms. Jeremy waited on us, he was on point. We started with cold, local drafts, fried green tomatoes with blackened shrimp, crawfish étouffée and some very fresh large oysters on the half shell. The fried green tomatoes were full of favor & were outrageous! For an entrée, we shared the blackfish grilled over potatoes with brussels sprouts in a creamy yasso sauce. For dessert we shared the delicious signature pecan cheesecake with cinnamon bun, topping and candied pecan.

This is the first seafood restaurant that I've been able to eat comfortably without worrying about my shellfish allergy. My catfish was good and seasoned to perfection. I will just ask them to fry it hard next time. The fries are hand cut and those they were limp, they were still so good. I will take limp hand cut fries over limp and frozen fries. The hush puppies were sooooo good!! I also had the grits and they add goat cheese to it. While I'm not a fan of goat cheese, it was good mixed in the grits. I added the picture of the sampler oysters (they weren't mine), but I had to show y'all how jealous and salty I am that I can't have oysters . You can just smell the picture.

Whenever I go home, I would usually go out of Hinds County to the north and to the east for good restaurant offerings. However, there is a neighborhood called Fondren that is not far from where I grew up that has some nice cafes and restaurants. This time, I told my classmate that I wanted to try Saltine because this was one where I had not been yet. We ordered small plates. The shrimp and lobster spring rolls reminded me of Thai egg rolls that cannot be beaten. The only difference was that these spring rolls had been deep fried. The loaded shrimp and crayfish dip with tortillas was another hit that I would definitely order on any repeat visits. The fried green tomatoes topped with blackened shrimp and crayfish etouffee was a delicious twist that no other restaurant has topped to date. I never had crab claws fried and having them at Saltine was a blast. Saltine is a lively restaurant. There is plenty of seating. And I will tip my hat for the outstanding service. For a restaurant that is heavy in seafood, the prices are surprisingly less that what you pay at most seafood restaurants. However, the food was of high-end quality. I loved it and so did my appetite.

Simply Ahhhmazing! Every aspect of this restaurant is amazing. So this used to be a school. I used to drive by this place. So now it's a place to dine and more. The Saltine is the crème de la crème! It's so beautiful inside. The original wood floors and doors are still there. There's a beautiful mural of an octopus' legs holding things like a wine bottle, a boat, and a pirate's knife. Probably the things he found on the sea floor. It's such a pretty drawing. Also, there's a huge, half oval-shaped bar with plenty of whatever you want. My friend ordered a Lemon Drop, and she went for a second one. We each got the Poboy. I got the fried oyster poboy, and it was deep-fried, which gave it a crunch. The creole mayo and the trimming added extra flavor. The bun was very soft and flaky. It was just perfect. I got the gumbo on the side. It was a dark roux, the sausage had a spice that kicked up the flavor, and the shrimp was seasoned to perfection. I could have eaten the shrimp alone. But I really loved the roux. We also went for the half dozen oysters at first, and then ordered another half dozen. I think what I liked was that we could mix the flavors. So we ordered the Citrus Butter and the Oysters Rockefeller, which is spinach and shallots, and it's covered in Parmesan cheese. The Oyster Lafitte is a crawfish tail, bacon, parmesan, and hot sauce butter. Now you see why we ordered another round of oysters. I asked the hostess about the fries, and she was right when she said they're very good and that they're a favorite. So it's a bed of fries with cheese, grits, and crawfish on top. It honestly was the best lunch I have had in a long time. I will advice you to go with friends and try most of the menu. It's really the only way to do it! One more thing, there's plenty of parking behind the building. Come in on the side of the bank. Also, you will want to stay a while after lunch. There's so much to see in the building. There's even a salon inside. Also, the area offers more stores, restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries.

Love the Cajun/ocean ambiance. Service by Beau was excellent! He was helpful, attentive, and funny. Beau brought my rating from a 2 to a 3. He was great. Food was ok and a bit disappointing. Fried green tomatoes covered with mini crawfish etoufee sounded interesting but was soggy and the tomatoes were overpowered by the etoufee. Didn't care for the thick batter on the small plate fried oysters (7-8 to an order, so large portions). The batter was bland. Wouldn't order either again. Shared the blackened redfish special - pretty good and tasty; although the redfish was NOT blackened. The goat cheese grits were excellent, but most were covered in etoufee. The kitchen loves their etoufee I think. Very bland etoufee with microscopic crawfish. Added the baked sweet potatoes, which were pretty good and the hush puppies, which were large, burned, and bland.

We stopped by here for a late dinner and drinks. The ambiance was nice and friendly. There was no one at the hostess stand so we sat ourselves. Our waiter was quick, friendly and attentive. The seafood pasta and oyster poboy were delicious! I plan to return next time I'm in town.

Saltine is my favorite upscale seafood restaurant around. They have a big selection of oysters but you have to try the smoked tuna dip. Everything I have tried here is delicious and the restaurant is very cozy and inviting. It can be loud in there if it's busy because of the high ceilings though

We are out -of-towners with 2 young kids and still were treated so warmly and had an amazing meal! I always appreciate a nice restaurant being so welcoming to children. The space was so unique being in a school house. Get the smoked tuna dip and oyster sampler! The black peppercorn ranch was fire!

Best meal we had in MS on our weekend trip. My daughter wanted gumbo and that's the only place we could find open on a Sunday. We had fish and grits, Cajun pasta, fresh oysters, gumbo, and shrimp dip for lunch. The atmosphere is modern and nice. Prices are fair but a little high for MS. Service was decent they forgot one of our orders and the server seemed like he was stretched thin with the number of tables he was handling. Overall everything was really good.

Unassuming from the outside and we're so glad we stopped. Nashville tenders were perfect and you got 6! I had the Cajun pasta which was perfect. Skillet cornbread was a skip. Otherwise amazing meal. Great salads too.

During a road trip in the South, we came upon Saltine because most other places were closed for a Sunday. what a break it was! Updated Southern cuisine. Bright and airy space. Very friendly host and a good looking crowd. We sat at the bar and the bartender helped us, I think his name was Aaron. Either way, he was GREAT. Very friendly, full of great suggestions and fun to chat with. We shared the kale salad. We're not normally fans of kale salad, but the feta dressing, pickled onions and pistachios were great. For dinner we shared the blacked redfish with Brussels and wedge potatoes and that was fantastic. Finally finished with the banoffee pie dessert. Which was layers of marscapone, Carmel and banana and was deliciously decadent! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I've always heard about Saltine but I've never been. I was craving oysters and since I was in the neighborhood, I thought I'd stop by. Whatdayaknow, it was Happy Hour and right up my alley! I ordered the Oysters Rockefeller and they were lightly smoked with a purée of spinach, shallots, garlic, and parmesan; by far the best I've ever had. I also ordered the Roasted Sweet Potato because I absolutely love sweet potatoes and they had me at "coffee honey, white pepper creme fraiche", however, after the first look and bite, I knew that they weren't made fresh...in fact, the potato was cold in the middle. I didn't complain though, because maybe, just maybe, it's prepared to be eaten lukewarm‍. Still hungry, I decided to order the Saltine Burger with house fries. The burger was a little on the mini size, but nevertheless, it was delicious and the house fries complemented all of the fixins on the burger. The New Fashion was my libation for the evening, made with Four Roses Bourbon, Demerara sugar, vanilla extract, and cherry bitters. The Bourbon Brown Sugar Butter Pecan Ice cream was my dessert choice. Loaded with chunks of butter pecans and with the right amount of sweet goodness, the perfectly round scoops were just the right amount to finish my night. My virgin experience here was pretty good, however, my expectations were dulled by the cold sweet potatoes. read more

Oh, but TJ, TJ TJ(the GM) is the real MVP, for me! TJ is one of the most professional, kind, and genuine GMs I have crossed paths with in a long time, especially in my home state of Mississippi. TJ, handled my situation, with honesty, care, and RESPECT! TJ is the epitome of how GMs and CEO's should handle their customers. My faith was most definitely RENEWED in SALTINE! Not only because of how quickly Allison responded to my review, but how TJ handled the rest! This is what makes a business a GREAT business; acknowledging the customer's experience was valid, accepting responsibility, correcting the actions of the staff, and apologizing on behalf of the company. my only criticism of saltine is the menu. the service is consistently good and food is tasty but the menu lacks for me. with each visit i struggle to fine an entree that calls for me to return. i've had the meatloaf, nashville hot shrimp, debris fries, saltine salad, low country boil and probably a few extra there i failed to mention. the only item i consistently recommend is the pork belly. give them a try if you want to change up locations but this isn't your best bet if you in jackson for a short visit. read more

Came here for oysters - but never again. I've been to saltines several times and have never been really impressed with their offerings. But I'm a huge oyster fan, so I keep coming back. I've noticed before that they offer different types of oysters. Primarily where they were harvested. But I'm a fan of our own gulf coast oysters, so have never seen the benefit of paying a huge price for oysters from WA State. Especially when you consider they are NOT going to be as great as LA oysters. Ordered their happy hour special: $1 each. That's an acceptable happy hour price. What I got were 12 oysters that could have all fit in a tablespoon. I pointed this out to my server, who graciously brought me two more. (The two she brought me were what I consider medium sized oysters in much larger shells - which tells me they know exactly what they are serving.). Oysters in shells the size of a silver dollar will be the size of a butterbean. As these were. This has been a great year for gulf oysters. Large and salty. I was told it was a supply problem. Tip to restaurants: don't serve food when you recognize there is a problem. The manager gave me a card good for a dozen on the half shell at a future visit. Appreciated, but that's not what I was after. I wanted decent oysters. read more

We came in on a Tuesday and had the lunch special, chopped steak with 2 sides. It looked good but blackeyed peas were not done all the way so they were a little hard and not much of a taste. The sweet potato was delicious, it was a half of a potato, and the chopped steak or hamburger steak was just ok. Definitely wouldn't go back for it. The highlight was the cinnamon bun cheesecake, it was heavenly! If I were to come back it would be just for dessert. read more

Went here for dinner with a party of 7, including my friend's 9-year-old son. Our waiter, Shelby, was excellent. He brought the little guy a kid's menu and coloring sheet with crayons, and had his chicken fingers in front of him before we had even finished our first round of drinks! The boy ate his dinner then sat and colored while we enjoyed our drinks, meals, and conversation. I had the PB&J (pork belly, boiled peanuts, and pepper jelly). Don't think too had about it, just order it!! I also had a half dozen wood fire oysters with cutie and garlic and a side of goat cheese grits. Hubby and I split an order of bacon jalapeño cornbread and it was just okay. The s'mores cake for dessert was out of this world!! Save some room for this if you can! Good craft beer tap list, though they were out of 3 of the beers we ordered. Excellent atmosphere - in an old repurposed school building. Can be a bit loud; we were here on a Friday night. read more

Wonderful atmosphere with an incredible Oyster Bar! They also have happy hour 4-6 PM every day. Only downside is that they don't offer "tap to pay" so don't forget cash or card. read more

Super nice place! Waiter was respectful. I drink a lot of water. Did not go empty. We sat at the bar. The gentleman and lady behind there working made conversation. Super plus! Even gave us a free oyster to try, cooked different then what we ordered! And actually found a Pearl the order we placed. Which was the frayed oyster with crab bacon and cheese! Pretty unoriginal seasonal menu. Cajun salmon is pretty stupid. Salmon has never swam past Louisiana. Asked for 2 beers on the menu and they were out of both. Two of the entrees I asked for they were out of. Food was very mid. Oysters were good. Service was good read more

Will not go back. Terrible service and mostly terrible food. The charbroiled oysters were small but tasty. The mashed potatoes were unseasoned and weirdly gritty making it inedible. The key lime tart had a crust so hard (I kept hacking at it to break off a piece) it was inedible and the accompanying coconut kefir sorbet was really plain, store bought vanilla. The crab avacado toast was so doused in vinaigrette that the bread seeped vinegar making it taste of nothing but vinegar. Not that the super thin layer of avacado and almost non existent crab could have kept up anyway. It was a four bite serving of vinegar-bread for $15. The fried oysters were quite good. We did not order drinks and our tab was $150 for train wreck of a meal. It was also quite frustrating that as a disabled person who booked a standard table for that reason, the hostess tried to seat me at a high top table. Really??? I had to ask her politely for accessible seating and got no apology and she acted as if I was causing her an inconvenience. So I'd say my experience on the whole was in the dumpster fire category. read more

Do not. I repeat do not get the shrimp and crawfish cheese dip. It is a thing of cheese dip with one shrimp inside. I cannot believe I just paid $13 for some cheese dip. I am so sad that I could cry. What is the most watery cheese dip I've ever had and it was so expensive I can't even! read more

I really like this spot. It's in the heart of Fondren and easily accessible. My daughter and wife are true oyster lovers, so we usually show up for the oyster happy hour (HH). While visiting Jackson around a month ago, I went with my brother and my kids for the HH. Of course, we started with 2 dozen oysters ($1/oyster for HH). Also tried the crab/avocado toast which was presented beautifully, and most importantly tasted great; and several tacos including the oyster tacos. The tacos were small, but seemed fair for $3 (also delicious). The bar is full and they have a good selection of craft beers. Tried a couple from MS that I don't see around ATL usually. Appreciated the HH discount on the beers. As usual, our service was pleasant and attentive. Nice place to visit when in Jackson. Will be back. read more

An adorable restaurant with great seafood! They have happy hour and specials so be sure to check those out. We got two dozen oysters and they come with mignonette sauce (shallots, pepper, vinegar) along with the standard cocktail sauce, horseradish, and lemons. definitely add a dash of tabasco if you like a little spice! The saltines they gave us were a little stale (funnily enough) but still a nice textural contrast to the oysters. Since we happened to be there for Happy Hour, we got some cocktails and beers. All were deemed delicious! I got the Nashville Hot Chicken and was expecting it to be spicier but overall it was great. My friend had the lobster rolls and liked the meat to bread ratio (a high compliment) but his gumbo was a hit. My other friends got the Saltine salad with seared tuna which was refreshing. The star of the show was the calamari. I highly highly highly recommend this dish. At first I was wondering it didn't come with any dipping suace but once I scooped up the cabbage and saw there was sauce underneath, it was a game-changer! Absolutely delicious and my favorite part. Service was gracious and efficient. I'll definitely be making a return! read more

We stopped in Jackson, Miss. on our way to Florida. Checked into hotel and looked on YELP for somewhere to eat close to hotel. We choose Saltine's and we were very happy we did!! Food outstanding and our waiters Ann and Mike, who happened to be married, were two of the best we've ever had and so personable and fun!! Would go there again if ever again in Jackson just for them. The fried oysters and calamari were some of the best as well as the tuna spread, cornbread and oysters Lafayette!! Can't wait to return!! read more

This is a difficult 3 stars. I'm a big fan of the atmosphere and really liked being here. Who knew an elementary school converted into a restaurant could be so cool? The service was great and the the dishes looked fantastic. What ultimate lead this to 3 stars instead of higher is how that fantastic looking food actually tasted. The three of us had their Broiled Oysters, Chicken Biscuits, Scotch Egg and Grits, Shrimp Po'Boy, and Skillet Cornbread. As noted, everything looked great, but fell pretty flat when it came to flavor. The one exception was their Chicken Biscuits, those were mighty tasty. Everything else though was pretty weak and disappointing. I wouldn't say that anything was bad per se, just average at best. The cornbread was pretty dry too. The coffee was ok. The disappointment in the food aside, I would easily come back here again and give them another shot. To be honest, i was a bit disappointed with the food options in Jackson. But we did enjoy one... we came here for brunch and fell in love with the food. They also have these $5 bloody Mary's that were really tasty. We tried the bourbon caramel french toast and gravy and biscuits. Both had great flavor and texture. The French toast was not soggy and drenched in syrup, it was nicely coated. We enjoyed our food so much, we came back for happy hour. They have $1 oysters, calamari, tuna dip and chicken wings. One star due to: We were seated. Given water. Never had order taken. Waited for 40 minutes. Decided to get up and leave. This is after 3 servers continuously walked back and forth past us without any of them taking our order. And this was a very light day with only 6 other people being at tables and the other 8 being at the bar. So I have no idea why we experienced this. This was around 4:30 yesterday so really slow at that time as far as number of patrons but couldn't get served. I had very high expectations from what I've heard. Mediocre at best. We had The lobster roll and grilled shrimp poboy - both which needed seasoning. We also split the crab avocado toast. It was bread (not toasted or warmed), the weird green spread and some crab. It was very odd tasting. The service was A+, and the restaurant has great potential. 4 cocktails, 3 appetizers, 2 entrées, and 1 dessert later we left headed back to Louisiana with a new favorite restaurant! I cannot say enough good things about our wonderful experience at Saltine! We're from Louisiana so we are of course accustomed to good food. This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend who has recently relocated from Baton Rouge to the Jackson area. We started out sipping a "Marlin Monroe" and "Blueberry Skinny Cat"... both were simply sublime! For apps, we had a half order of crawfish queso fries, the fried green tomatoes topped with crawfish and blackened shrimp, and the sampler half dozen of oysters. On our second round of drinks we ordered "A Peach on the Beach" and an "Eye of the Storm". The "Eye of the Storm" is perhaps my favorite, although it's really hard to say because all 4 drinks we sampled were absolutely divine, but there was just something special about the subtle kick of heat and spice from this martini! For entrées we selected the shrimp and grits and lobster spring rolls. They were both out of this world! After all of the delicious food, we really had no room left for dessert, but our server, Trent, said we really had to try the cinnamon roll cheesecake and oh my goodness am I ever glad that we listened! The cheesecake itself was perfection, but then it was topped with a scrumptious warm cinnamon roll and bourbon caramel sauce with candied pecans... talk about melt in your mouth! I seriously thought about that cheesecake for days after! Besides all of the amazing food and drink, another highlight of our experience was our server Trent. He made us feel right at home from the moment he greeted us at our table. All of his recommendations were top notch. It felt like chatting with an old friend we'd known for years. So much so that we asked to get a picture with him before we left and he happily obliged. We told him we will be back in town at the end of August and cannot wait to stop back by for another delicious meal and will definitely request Trent if he's working. We want to try out some other menu items we haven't had the pleasure of experiencing yet, but it's going to be a difficult decision because we're surely going to want some of our old favorites from our first visit as well! The food was delicious especially the fried oysters! The pink Sauce that comes with the oysters (I believe it's called the Comeback sauce) is absolutely delicious and goes with practically all the seafood they serve there! Oh my YUM!!!! From small plates to desserts and drinks, oysters to speciality po-boys- this place has it all! I'd recommend any of the wood fired oysters. Truly delectable. If oysters aren't your thing- NO WORRIES! The catfish and chips are on point. Don't forget to start out with something that'll really get your taste buds pumped- try the gravy fries or the cornbread. I ate breakfast loaf for dinner. Such a thing has never crossed my mind, although I imagine it would be intriguing. The egg was on top of a meatloaf that had been wrapped in bacon. The Staff is trying to close this restaurant down. They are very unfriendly and they constantly do not serve paying customers. I hope the owners of this restaurant send some secret shoppers in. The last two times we attempted to dine and drink at saltines we sat at the bar for 10-20 min without any acknowledgement. When we first moved to jackson last summer service was great but over the last 7 months we have watched the staff attempt to ruin this place. The mashed potatoes were a little on the cool temperature side, but they were also very good. You don't get much lump crab, but that too was good. One of the folks got a sandwich with their special chips. I had to try the chips, must say they were excellent. The server for as busy as she was, was terrific.

I customized the flavor as the "Mighty Special" - Cajun, Lemon Pepper and Garlic Butter all combined. For the spicy level, I chose "Hot." The total was only $36.99! This was such a steal, especially since the seafood boil bag was generous. When trying it, it was honestly so flavorful and palatable. The sauce literally made the crab legs, shrimp, corn, and potatoes beyond tasty. Mighty Crab serves satisfying seafood boils with mouthwatering bold flavors! I finished my order and she said one of the part owners was inside the restaurant but that the owners 'never spoke with customers' and "he's not going to discount anything for you'. WOW... Talk about being incredibly rude.
