Came for the first time tonight and service exceptional. Our server was very knowledgeable on the menu items and recommended our appetizer for us. We also had some alcoholic drinks that were delicious. I had the sangria and my fiancé had a margarita. They start you off with kettled chips and Valentina hot sauce- so yummy and not the regular chips and salsa. Our food came out quickly. As an avid Box St. All Day enjoyer, I was super excited to try this new concept of theirs! Saludos is upscale, warm and inviting, beautifully designed, and they even have a little attached playground with a soft turf for the kiddos! Service was absolutely amazing. Mark was our server and he went above and beyond to accommodate, and not once were our drinks empty. It felt like magic, he was always there right before someone took the last sip of their drink to top it off. The food was all impressively house-made, delicious, and our dishes came out in less than 15 minutes (party of 6). Saludos definitely lived up to the hype. We loved the whole vibe of the place. They have two floors with patios and even a play area for your kids. The staff was so friendly and welcoming, especially our server Mark! He was obviously an expert on the menu recommending appetizers and meals that we all ended up loving. Unfortunately, our experience at Saludos Cocina & Bar ended before we ever had a chance to try the food. We walked in around 5 PM on a Saturday and were immediately told they were booked for the entire night. That was surprising because there was no one waiting, the parking lot had plenty of open spaces, and from where we stood we could see numerous empty tables in the dining room. We were offered outdoor seating, but on one of the hottest days of the year in New Braunfels, that wasn't much of an option. I completely understand restaurants honoring reservations, but a little explanation about why none of the many empty tables could accommodate two people would have gone a long way. I rarely leave negative reviews and genuinely wanted to try Saludos, but the experience left us feeling unwelcome. With so many great restaurants in New Braunfels, I highly doubt I'll return until I've tried the other options first, if I return at all. read more

Our party is disabled so we used the only ramp to seat ourselves on the outside patio. We were not greeted since we didn't check in with the host upon arrival, but there were no signs to check in or wait to be seated. The host stand is up a flight of stairs so we wouldn't have been able to check in either way. Hopefully it becomes more accessible for future guests. Decent food, good service, astronomical prices, even by modern standards. We got chips and salsa (which isn't free like most Mexican restaurants), one Diet Coke, and two orders of shrimp tacos (two tacos per plate), and the total came to $62 BEFORE tip. Another annoyance, they had me pay on a handheld that they brought to the table which is always awkward when the waiter is standing there while you put in the tip. The default options were 18%, 22%, and 25%, so I would have had to calculate and key in the standard 20% tip....so I just hit 22%. That's just slimy configuration by the restaurant owners. Upscale Mexican. Members of the wait staff consistently and confidently informed us that Saludos is NOT "Tex-Mex." Elegant interior caused me to expect white table cloths. I had shrimp tacos and my dining companion had fish tacos. We both enjoyed our selections. Inspite of an extensive menu of cocktails and drinks we both opted for the traditional margarita and it was fine. We took an out-of-town friend to Saludos and were blown away by the entire experience. The restaurant is housed in the historic 1887 Dittlinger building, and the transformation is stunning--it has a vibrant, modern Mexico City vibe. We noticed some negative reviews from people looking for Tex-Mex, but we loved that this place offers something unique and chef-driven instead. The ribeye and fish tacos were standouts, and the ceviche was incredibly fresh. Don't skip the beignet sopapillas for dessert!. Our drinks--the Paloma and Mezcal Mule--were well-balanced and top-tier. The staff was professional and genuinely friendly, making for a perfect evening. read more

Rough experience here. Was excited to try this place. Our reservation was for the patio. Upon arrival we were told our reservation was for the dining room, we expressed our reservation was for the patio but they insisted the patio was full and we need to be sat in the dining room. Almost showed our reservation and argued but figured it wasn't worth it. Then we waited quite a while for service. They bring these weird kettle chips and hot sauce for your free appetizer... which I don't really understand the point of. Just be normal and give us chips and salsa, instead of forcing the customer to pay for it. We did order the trio appetizer, everything was good. Margaritas tastes good but were quite small for the price. The default side with entrees is roasted potatoes, once again, doesn't make sense. Once again you're forced to up charge to get rice and beans. I don't know if they are trying to be quirky and different or this is authentic Mexican food but we were not fans. Fish tacos were scarily fishy, honestly was worried about food poisoning. Bistec tacos were good but also had a little bit of a scary funky taste. Luckily nobody got sick. Overall hostess wasn't rude but didn't get our reservation right, server was nice but slow to start. Food was alright, but the main things that should be good were not. Drinks are good but expensive for their size. Honestly don't think we will be returning, would much rather just go to Chuy's or a more competent Mexican restaurant. read more

2nd time I have booked a reservation here. The first time we went, we were told we had to be out in 45 minutes for the next party. Food was good. This time we arrived for our reservation and then waited 25 minutes. Our table was still not ready. The people waiting next to us also had a reservation and they had been waiting nearly an hour. Needless to say, we left. No one updated us, apologized, or offered us a drink. When I asked the status, all I was told was that the table was still occupied. I am not a paid restaurant reviewer but we do go out to eat quite often and pay attention to all the differences. We drove up to NB to try this new place for the first time. No problem with the parking, the hostess was ready to greet us and luckily we did lot have a wait time. We did notice it had a nice big covered outside patio area below street level. A little to hot to sit out there and enjoy during this time of the year though, maybe later. A flight of stairs to the front door. Did not need so did not look for a ramp entry. Place was very clean. Now for the service. Our server was very courteous, brought us water, their chips and mentioned the specialties, Now the chips are more like crispy homemade potato chips. The salsa was in a bottle like Tabasco sauce. Different but ok. We ordered the 1/2 lb fajita dinner to share like we usually do. It came out on a little skillet with sautéed vegetables and they were all very tender. Now the issue to me is they might have been a 1/2 pound frozen or uncooked but it was a very small serving. The beans and rice were also very small servings. Most of the restaurants we've ordered the same dinner and it was more than enough for 2 people. The order included corn tortillas and charged extra for flour. NB is a tourist town because of the river and most tourists like these kind of restaurants but they all depend on consistent non seasonal customer traffic to survive. If they expect local return customers they should consider more proportionate servings for the prices they charge. Finally their chairs have shorter than normal legs, no arms so be careful if you have any mobility issues. read more

New restaurant in New Braunfels that I have been looking forward to trying. Since the weather has been nice we booked a reservation on the patio for 5:30pm and was excited to enjoy the nice spring day, showed up on time and checked in and was walked upstairs to their main dining room...I informed the host that we had booked on the patio and she said sorry, it's full. This was a little frustrating as walking up I noted multiple open tables outside, plus we had reserved a spot there...but oh well. We took our seats and it took a noticeably long period of time to be greeted. Once our server arrived, service was great, she did a very good job of prebussing throughout the experience. Started with two house margaritas, sangria and mango flavored, both very good. They have complimentary potato chips and what tastes like valentina hot sauce in a bottle, this was fine but kind of odd and would have preferred your standard complimentary chips and salsa. We ordered the appetizer that comes with guac, beans, salsa, and tortilla chips. This was good but I can't help but feel this is a cash grab since they could have just included salsa and chips from the get go. We ordered the Vampire Bistec tacos and the fish tacos for entrees, both we subbed the potatoes for rice and beans. Both were good, the fish tacos leaned more on the fishy side, which was covered up by the strong chipotle sauce. I think a higher quality fish would solve this problem. The bistec was yummy and seasoned well, but had an unsettling smell. The wall we were sat next to had food stuck to it and some of the plates had large chips in them. Overall the experience was good, I would come here for a good drink and maybe the atmosphere if I could get a table outside. Seems like it will go over well in New Braunfels. This place could use a little tweaking but not a bad starting point! read more

Waited awhile to come here because of any kinks that would need fixing. We sat in the bar area and service was great especially for New Braunfels! Waiter was awesome and told us what to get! Ambiance is unique and fun and I love what they did with the building! Not thrilled that there's no queso and the chips are basically Krauses potato chips with Valentino hot sauce. We got the wings and the Rajas con crema. Wings were pretty good with lots of seasoning but the Rajas was tiny and underwhelming to say the least. As a table we got the ribeye tacos, fish tacos, and the Vampiro De Bistec tacos. Fish tacos were not good, the ribeye tacos were alright but I did enjoy the Vampiro tacos...but the menu in my opinion needs more spicy options. Very small portions for the prices. I think it's just another case of very high expectations were in place before opening. I definetely think over the next few months that the menu will be updated/changed but for now it's a great place to get drinks and maybe some appetizers and sit on the patio! Will try again later for sure! Until then just go to Las Fontanas. read more

Dinner at Saludos Mexican Restaurant starts with a small realization: you're about to eat tacos inside a building that once handled serious business. The restaurant occupies the historic Dittlinger Roller Mills Office Building, built around 1923 as the administrative office for the mill across the street. Back then it was probably full of ledgers, stern expressions, and discussions about grain prices. Today it's full of color, music, laughter, and the smell of tortillas that could bring peace to international negotiations. Architecturally, the building still carries its Classical Revival dignity -- clean lines, symmetrical design, and graceful arches. But the proprietors have transformed it with vibrant colors and the lively spirit of a Mexican kitchen, like a history professor who suddenly learned how to host a really good party. We started with rajas con crema, which arrived creamy, smoky, and comforting enough to make us briefly consider ordering three more and skipping the rest of the menu. For entrées we ordered the fish tacos and ribeye tacos. The fish tacos were bright and fresh, the kind that make you feel like you're eating near the ocean even though you're several hours from one. The ribeye tacos, on the other hand, showed up like the confident older cousin -- bold, rich, and not remotely shy about it. Then came the enchiladas rojas with Oaxaca cheese, topped with a colorful pile of crispy cabbage slaw that added the perfect crunch. Somewhere between the enchiladas and the tacos we realized conversation had slowed considerably -- always a reliable sign that the food is winning. And the sides... oh, the sides. The beans were heavenly. Not "good for beans." Not "pretty decent beans." These were call-your-grandmother-and-apologize-for-ever-doubting-beans beans. Even the rice made our toes curl. I don't know how rice does that, but it happened. The margarita arrived rimmed with tajín and salt, strong but balanced -- the kind of margarita that says, "Relax, stay awhile... but maybe don't schedule any complicated math afterward." For dessert we ordered beignet-style sopapillas with dulce de leche, which were warm, fluffy, and vanished from the plate at a speed that suggests we may need to work on our table manners. Meanwhile, our teenage daughter spent the entire meal conducting a highly unofficial tasting tour of everyone's plate. By the end of the evening she had sampled half the menu. At this rate, her grade in Spanish class may improve purely from cultural immersion... or at least from confidently pronouncing dulce de leche. In the end, Saludos manages to pull off a rare trick: honoring a historic 1920s building while filling it with enough flavor, color, and laughter to make it feel brand new. Somewhere in the walls of that old mill office, I imagine the original clerks would be confused -- but probably very happy -- that the building's most important work now involves tacos and margaritas. read more
