Rough experience here. Was excited to try this place. Our reservation was for the patio. Upon arrival we were told our reservation was for the dining room, we expressed our reservation was for the patio but they insisted the patio was full and we need to be sat in the dining room. Almost showed our reservation and argued but figured it wasn't worth it. Then we waited quite a while for service. They bring these weird kettle chips and hot sauce for your free appetizer... which I don't really understand the point of. Just be normal and give us chips and salsa, instead of forcing the customer to pay for it. We did order the trio appetizer, everything was good. Margaritas tastes good but were quite small for the price. The default side with entrees is roasted potatoes, once again, doesn't make sense. Once again you're forced to up charge to get rice and beans. I don't know if they are trying to be quirky and different or this is authentic Mexican food but we were not fans. Fish tacos were scarily fishy, honestly was worried about food poisoning. Bistec tacos were good but also had a little bit of a scary funky taste. Luckily nobody got sick. Overall hostess wasn't rude but didn't get our reservation right, server was nice but slow to start. Food was alright, but the main things that should be good were not. Drinks are good but expensive for their size. Honestly don't think we will be returning, would much rather just go to Chuy's or a more competent Mexican restaurant. read more

New restaurant in New Braunfels that I have been looking forward to trying. Since the weather has been nice we booked a reservation on the patio for 5:30pm and was excited to enjoy the nice spring day, showed up on time and checked in and was walked upstairs to their main dining room...I informed the host that we had booked on the patio and she said sorry, it's full. This was a little frustrating as walking up I noted multiple open tables outside, plus we had reserved a spot there...but oh well. We took our seats and it took a noticeably long period of time to be greeted. Once our server arrived, service was great, she did a very good job of prebussing throughout the experience. Started with two house margaritas, sangria and mango flavored, both very good. They have complimentary potato chips and what tastes like valentina hot sauce in a bottle, this was fine but kind of odd and would have preferred your standard complimentary chips and salsa. We ordered the appetizer that comes with guac, beans, salsa, and tortilla chips. This was good but I can't help but feel this is a cash grab since they could have just included salsa and chips from the get go. We ordered the Vampire Bistec tacos and the fish tacos for entrees, both we subbed the potatoes for rice and beans. Both were good, the fish tacos leaned more on the fishy side, which was covered up by the strong chipotle sauce. I think a higher quality fish would solve this problem. The bistec was yummy and seasoned well, but had an unsettling smell. The wall we were sat next to had food stuck to it and some of the plates had large chips in them. Overall the experience was good, I would come here for a good drink and maybe the atmosphere if I could get a table outside. Seems like it will go over well in New Braunfels. This place could use a little tweaking but not a bad starting point! read more

We will not be back! Food was not good. Their dessert was undercooked. When we brought this up to our waiter, he acknowledged that they were undercooked and that the manager had talked to the cook. The waiter did not offer to give us a COOKED version, nor did they take it off our bill. Very poor customer service in my opinion. I will pay top dollar for good service. Which we did not get so nope, won't be back plus food was cold and not tasty at all. If I could give less than one star I would. Epic fail. read more

Dinner at Saludos Mexican Restaurant starts with a small realization: you're about to eat tacos inside a building that once handled serious business. The restaurant occupies the historic Dittlinger Roller Mills Office Building, built around 1923 as the administrative office for the mill across the street. Back then it was probably full of ledgers, stern expressions, and discussions about grain prices. Today it's full of color, music, laughter, and the smell of tortillas that could bring peace to international negotiations. Architecturally, the building still carries its Classical Revival dignity -- clean lines, symmetrical design, and graceful arches. But the proprietors have transformed it with vibrant colors and the lively spirit of a Mexican kitchen, like a history professor who suddenly learned how to host a really good party. We started with rajas con crema, which arrived creamy, smoky, and comforting enough to make us briefly consider ordering three more and skipping the rest of the menu. For entrées we ordered the fish tacos and ribeye tacos. The fish tacos were bright and fresh, the kind that make you feel like you're eating near the ocean even though you're several hours from one. The ribeye tacos, on the other hand, showed up like the confident older cousin -- bold, rich, and not remotely shy about it. Then came the enchiladas rojas with Oaxaca cheese, topped with a colorful pile of crispy cabbage slaw that added the perfect crunch. Somewhere between the enchiladas and the tacos we realized conversation had slowed considerably -- always a reliable sign that the food is winning. And the sides... oh, the sides. The beans were heavenly. Not "good for beans." Not "pretty decent beans." These were call-your-grandmother-and-apologize-for-ever-doubting-beans beans. Even the rice made our toes curl. I don't know how rice does that, but it happened. The margarita arrived rimmed with tajín and salt, strong but balanced -- the kind of margarita that says, "Relax, stay awhile... but maybe don't schedule any complicated math afterward." For dessert we ordered beignet-style sopapillas with dulce de leche, which were warm, fluffy, and vanished from the plate at a speed that suggests we may need to work on our table manners. Meanwhile, our teenage daughter spent the entire meal conducting a highly unofficial tasting tour of everyone's plate. By the end of the evening she had sampled half the menu. At this rate, her grade in Spanish class may improve purely from cultural immersion... or at least from confidently pronouncing dulce de leche. In the end, Saludos manages to pull off a rare trick: honoring a historic 1920s building while filling it with enough flavor, color, and laughter to make it feel brand new. Somewhere in the walls of that old mill office, I imagine the original clerks would be confused -- but probably very happy -- that the building's most important work now involves tacos and margaritas. read more

This is in a cool building in a great location near the square downtown. We had an appetizer of Rajas Con Cremas which was awesome. The rest of our food was good but not that unique or exceptional for similarly priced Mexican restaurants. They make a big deal about the unique regional influences of their food but truly it didn't seem too different from other high end Mexican restaurants. And the cocktails were good but overpriced. For the downtown area it may be the best Mexican offering but for the price we will probably go elsewhere in the future. read more

This was a frustrating experience overall. One ongoing pet peeve happened right away: most of the table's food came out, but two people were left waiting while everyone else ate. If that had been the only issue, we could have overlooked it. Unfortunately, it wasn't. A senior citizen in our group ordered quesadillas but was served what they called chicken fajitas. The dish didn't come out on the typical sizzling cast-iron skillet you expect, so he reasonably assumed it was what he ordered. When the mistake was realized, the restaurant refused to adjust the price, saying he had already eaten it and should have said something sooner. They were forced to pay for it.  That policy felt unfair and poorly handled. Our main waitress and the manager, Bryce, were kind and professional. However, a new manager, Conner, addressed the situation in a way that came across as rude and dismissive. Overall, the food felt overpriced, and the experience didn't justify the cost. There are plenty of great Mexican restaurants in town. Based on this visit, we won't be returning. read more

Three margaritas cost $75.00!! Only once in my life did I pay $25 for a margarita/at Hugo's in Houston; best marg. I ever had plus best Latin food ever in USA. Saludos is not in their league. Our waitress Dee Dee was the most precious and amazing human being on this entire planet. If and WHEN you go, ask for her to be your server! We went on opening night. The building remodel is beautiful, the staff were attentive and nice, and the food was good. We ordered the totopos to start. The chips are fried in house (maybe a bit overdone) and we were given plenty. But the salsa, beans, and guac serving sizes were very small. The complimentary potato chips with Valentina was reminiscent of Mexico City. We ordered the steak tacos (3), rajas with crema, and flautas. The tacos were amazing with tender beef and homemade corn tortillas. The kitchen messed up the rajas order and we didn't get it until our meal was essentially over. I'll chalk it up to an opening day snafu. However, my flautas were nearly inedible as they were fried rock hard. I hoped to crack them open to get the pork out to save the dish. The pork tasted good but was dry due to the over-frying. We ended the dinner with the strawberries and cream. I loved it and the wife found it overly sweet but still enjoyed it. Our bill was about $83 with tax, before tip. This was a steep price. If it wasn't for the totopos and potato chips, I think we would've left hungry. Overall, it was a positive experience. Saludos probably has some kinks to work out, which I'm sure they will based on how aware and attentive the staff was. At their price point and the amount of food you get, Saludos feels more like a special occasion spot as opposed to a regular dinner spot. read more

My wife and I went here for the first time two days ago. We got seated about 15-20 minutes after our reservation time, which wasn't too bad considering how popular this place is. We started with two happy hour margaritas which means they were $10.50 instead of $12.50. Thankfully they are hand made at the bar with NO MIX! We've been to other Mexican restaurants in the area that use mixes and their margaritas are gross. Our server was Chris. He provided EXCELLENT service. I had the beef fajita enchiladas with Rojas sauce. These are made like they're made in central Mexico. It's basically a cheese quesadilla with the sauce and meat on top. They were delicious! And the rice and beans that came with them were some of the best I've had. My wife took a bite of the rice and said it was like eating a cloud. That's how light and fluffy they were. My wife had the beef short rib barbacoa and said loved it. Finally, the ambiance of the place is really nice. You can tell you're in an upscale restaurant, but it's not presumptuous. I have been to Saludos a few times and they have absolutely killed each visit. The margaritas are refreshing and not sweet. Cooper was our waiter and he was very knowledgeable about the menu, answering any questions we had and even offered a few of his favorites. Love an experience that offers traditional Mexican cuisine and the decor is to die for! Have not found an item on the menu we haven't enjoyed and wouldn't order again!! Steak agua chile, shrimp tacos, enchiladas, ceviche, and cochinita pixel flats have all been wonderful. Do not leave with trying the sopapilla beignets!!!
