I LOVE this place and I will admit it is mostly because they are open late!! The cocktails and food are good. The food is actually beyond good. Somewhat adventurous actually. Fresh takes on old favorites sometimes. Wonderful, unique pizzas. Great space outside for seating. Did I mention they are open late? Madison even before the pandemic was sort of like Mayberry. Multiple times I arrived at a restaurant that was supposed to be open until 9 pm and it was locked at 8:30 ("well nobody was here....") so I love and respect those restaurants that know there are late eaters like me out there. And....a couple of old school video games in the bar area (Frogger and Ms Pac-Man as I recall). Easy to park around there as well. read more

This is a 'get 4-5 plates to share' kind of place (for a group of 4) and YOU WILL WANT TO TRY EVERY PLATE. (And the plates aren't bite-sized tapas - they are full-bodied apps and the pizzas are 10" -and perfect for sharing!) We ordered the broccoli and cheddar plate, white sauce chicken wings, BBQ pizza, and elote. All of the plates were unexpected, interesting, and delicious - fresh takes on classic fare. Giving a review based on what they're going for - a "hip" place with a touch pricey shared plates. I went on the day after they opened, so grading on a bit of a curve. Overall, I thought the service for day #2 was great - server was nice, helped me move to a new table; she did forget our drink order but came back and double checked. It took a while to get drinks, but once we did, they were excellent. I see getting these kinks worked out quickly in time. I think the draft pours are a little ridiculously priced (I don't think they have anything under $7). I appreciated that their house cocktails are very reasonable ($7-$9) - they are a little less showy/creative compared to somewhere like Merchant, but it's nice to get a house cocktail that isn't $10-$14. I usually would have ordered a beer but it was hard to justify the prices. I got the fried tofu and the Sal's pizza. Both were very good, although the tofu had thin slices of a pepper that blew my tastebuds out (and I love spicy food). I wish they'd get a pepper just a little lower on the Scoville scale. Otherwise, a good dish with a few minor inconsistencies that again, I think will get better quickly as the kitchen gets in a groove. The pizza was unsurprisingly very good. My friend got the wings and said they were pretty good but the wings themselves were pretty small. I understand doing the "shared small plate" thing - it lets the kitchen just get dishes out and not worry about order - but it can be a problem if you don't have the same preferences. e.g. I didn't want to eat meat, and my friend got his wings 10-15 min before we got anything else, so that was kind of awkward. Inside has a cool vibe - I would go there for drinks late at night if they had a fast late night menu for example. Overall I thought for day 2, pretty solid, but not a place I'd come back often unless they do something like the specials Sal's has. read more

Unfortunately, this place didn't meet the expectations I had for it. All of the hype about it wasn't really met. The atmosphere was cool, but the red lighting was a bit overbearing. The host stand is in the middle of the restaurant which is odd. However the service was great! I ordered it to go since I live here at Constellation. The hostess was VERY nice and helpful. The food however, was ok. The brussel sprouts were AMAZING but the pizza and lamb ravioli was ok at best. They just opened so I will definitely give this place another chance in a month or so to let them settle in. ALOT of potential still. read more

Vegan Szechuan meatballs (made with impossible burger) with veggie fried rice family-sized takeout meal which is a special during COVID19. Good amount of flavor and spicy! This was on our list for a while, we finally stopped in for dinner last night and were extremely happy with everything! Patio seating was comfortable and spacious. All staff were wearing masks, hand sanitizer on each table and Utensils were clean and double wrapped in plastic. We ordered three things baked tofu as an appetizer, kabobs with samosa croquets, and lastly Italian wedding ramen. Each item had delicious flavors and presented beautifully. The server took the time to stagger the delivery at exactly the right pace and made recommendations based on size/quantity of the dishes. (I wish I had gotten her name for a mention here) They even brought the ramen in separate bowls for us. A great experience, will definitely go back!! read more

Just had the strangest interaction ordering from here. Couldn't order on their online site so had to call. My brother calls the order in and immediately knew the guy was just NOT getting what he was saying. He clearly said it was for delivery, gave them our address, gave his credit card info over the phone, and tipped. Over an hour and half later, we call to ask the status of our delivery. The guy on the phone says it's ready to be picked up. My brother was like "...i said delivery, gave you my address, and gave my credit card info..." This is a Fantastic Restaurant for Pizza. We had the Meat Pizza (Fat Uncle Tony) and a Market Salad. The food was Great and there was more than enough salad to split. The salad is fresh and has whatever the chef picks up from the market that day. I would highly recommend. One of the top three pizzas I have ever had. read more

Girrrrlll, treat yoself Donna and Tom style (parks and recreation reference) to this food! My partner and I ordered from DarkHorse for the first time to celebrate our recent move and - wow...WOW! What I expected was a more upscale version of my favorite pizza place in madison (Sal's) with a few different - non-pizza items. Not only did DarkHorse deliver on this front, they also delivered something I thought would be nearly impossible - upscale, fancy-feeling food at an affordable price that was ready to be picked up in under 25 min (read that shit again). You won't find that anywhere else. We ordered: the swordfish, "meatballs," the Sasquatch pizza, and the peach pizza. All were amazing. Highly recommend. This was our best dining experience of Covid and the closest we have felt to truly being in a restaurant since March 2020. Fancy night? Get on it. Rewatching parks and Rec for the 6th time? We stopped in the second day after opening and expected some hiccups that comes along with a new restaurant. I will say from a service and food standpoint, everything was good to very good. Before getting into the food, I do feel that the restaurant may be suffering from the fact that there are 3 people involved in the restaurant (DePula, Jerabek, and Spink) as the menu reads more of what each chef thought would be best vs a cohesive menu. Pizza, some pasta, a take on a cubano sandwich, scallops, smoked chicken wings are just some examples of the menu items. The items/ingredients are chef driven, don't get me wrong, just they are suffering from a little ADHD in my opinion. Interior wise, I feel they missed the mark. They weren't gifted with a great layout but feel the host stand in the middle of the restaurant (requiring to walk through the dining room if you enter off of Washington Ave. is clumsy. I dig the "mom's basement/upscale hole in the wall" feel but they didn't carry the theme through. The exposed concrete pillars as well as relatively stark walls leaves it cold and a tad sterile. Moving onto the food, we ordered the lamb kofta ravioli along with Patrick's favorite pizza. As I mentioned before, each dish tasted excellent although the ravioli suffered from thicker and undercooked dough. The Mediterranean flavors shined with the ravioli with hummus and raita serving as a "sauce". The pizza was also excellent. With the dark interior and overall coldness of the space, I wouldn't call this a date night restaurant although the price point and concept of shared plates calls for it. It feels more like an after bar/after concert venue but the food selection (ie. tuna poke cannoli) and price points also don't support that. Given the time and reason, we will be back but at this point, if I want pizza, I'll go to Salvatores. If I want italian, I will go to Papavero and if I want seafood, tempest or sardine has my vote. I will be interested to see how/if the restaurant morphs over time. read more

Salvatore's has pretty good pizza and chicken wings...However, the menu, locations, and customer service leave something to be desired. The menu is different at all three locations and the delivery zone for each location is very small...I've asked for adjustments or tried to get some thing similar to one of my/partner's preferences in different locations and the staff are dismissive and sometimes seem angry that I would ask. I work in the service industry and in retail for many years and I don't want to give a less than perfect review! But this procedure is frustrating and really stops me from visiting or ordering most of the time. Also, takeout is routinely ready 15 to 20 minutes later than they anticipate. If you're here for one night and have no other options it's great... If you're looking for consistency or good service I'd go elsewhere. read more

Amazing food and even better customer service! We ordered from Sal's Saturday night during Restaurant Week when they were understandably slammed, and a few things didn't make it. I sent a message to let them know what happened, and the following day the head chef had followed up and offered us a replacement meal. So refreshing to see that level of accountability and willingness to make things right for their customers! I am a big fan of Salvatore's pizza and I was really excited to learn of his new venture in the ever expanding East Washington corridor. I had my trepidation based on mixed reviews and almost held off going until they had a few more weeks under their belt. I'm glad I didn't wait! We had a great experience. We ordered a carafe of Bordeaux to get us started, and we were not disappointed. It was large and the wine was a great compliment to our food selection. The menu is designed as small plate for sharing and our party of three couldn't have been happier! We ordered everything up front and had a pretty continuous stream of decadence delivered as follows: the Brussels sprouts app was delicious though a couple in our party thought it was a bit over done. They were pretty sweet but I like it that way. The girls LOVED the crispy tofu. I'm not a tofu guy but I thought the texture was excellent and the flavor from the veggies and heat from the sauce was delightful. We then had a great order of HUGE scallops with bok choy and sauce that was delicious. Followed by the rigatoni. The flavor was good with a woody hint in the creme fraiche but the wagu, which should have been melt in your mouth, was tough and brought down the overall score for this dish. We weren't there for pizza but how can you not have a Sal pie!? We got the Sal pizza pie and all thought it was accidentally ordered off the child's menu. It was boring and the crust was definitely not what we expected. It turns out we were brought the glutton free crust version by mistake. The topping was still bland but the crust would have been better. Since this was a disappointment, we added the tuna tartar dish as a finale. This came out crisp and shaped like a taco for ease of consumption and consume we did! This should have been one of the first dishes but glad we didn't miss it. It's a must have for tuna lovers. Overall, we liked the atmosphere, we loved most of the food and though it wasn't cheap, we enjoyed the overall experience and we'll be back. Don't hold out, try it! read more

The seasonal peach salad and Mexican street corn were amazing. We really loved the expanded options for vegetarians and vegans. We've loved Sals since the original location but early on felt sad that there were so few exciting options on the menu that came meat free. When the Woodsman was added, we were so excited - it really is an amazingly delicious pizza. But DarkHorse takes the vegetarian options to another level. We loved the Elmer Street with vegetarian "sausage" substituted in. I hope to try the fig and bacon with the same sausage subbed in next time - it didn't work well the time I ordered it without the bacon, but with the salty "sausage" in place of the bacon I think it will be delish! The crispy tofu was also a hit at our table. We were sorry we missed some of the more adventurous veg dishes on the earlier menu but can't wait to come back again and try what is still here. read more

It's not COVID-19 that makes the food bad. It's honestly never been good since it opened. Cocktails are good, list is small. The food is just bland. The pizza coming out of the kitchen doesn't even taste the same a Sal's which is odd. I miss Sujeo. Servers are nice, defiantly not a service issue, just a not good food issue. Our experience at Sal's was mostly really good with a few missteps. We started with the drinks: exceptionally good Bloody Mary and Old Fashioned. They were great, especially the Old Fashioned with fresh cherries. Delicious! On to the food: the Market Salad was beautiful but entirely ruined by too much anchovy! Sorry, but it ruined the whole salad and the overpowering smell of heavy anchovies permeated the rest of the meal.... We ordered the chicken wings with Alabama white BBQ sauce -- delicious! We also ordered the Elmer Street pizza which was fantastic, as well. Pizza was done perfectly and just the right amount of toppings and crispy crust. The chili oil was great on the pizza and castelvetrano olives were perfect. We will definitely be back. I appreciated the low key gentleman server but found the hostess somewhat rude. Instead of cheap packets of Parmesan and red pepper flakes, would have enjoyed real cheese and pepper flakes in shakers or bowls. I don't mind paying more for the quality ingredients and attention to detail sal's offers. I also liked the interior design of the space, but the depressing 90's grunge music could be improved. We order takeout from Sal's regularly and enjoy the Tuesday pizza special, but it was very nice to dine-in for the great drinks, ambience and fresh from the oven experience. read more

Door person was too busy posting on phone to care. Totally ruined the meal and experience. Had to return to get the rest of order and had to ask for compensation for my inconvenience. This place rocks. The restaurant itself is gorgeous and the staff is very friendly. Thankfully they re-opened a couple of weeks ago and have a very good take out operation. We had a party last night and they accommodated a huge take out order. It was on time and hot. I'm still picking up fragments of my skull after having the Spice Brisket Rigatoni.
