This Raleigh icon has recently celebrated a major milestone birthday. It's a quaint old two story house which has been converted into the go to place for hair cuts, styles and color for both men and women. It is located on Oberlin Road between Cameron Village and Hillsborough Street. Lunch or a cold beer at Players Retreat could be a great way to show off your new hairdo. It's only going to look this good on the day you visit, regardless of how many outrageously over priced products you leave with. And they do push product. The receptionist is always super helpful and scheduling is done in person or over the phone. A reminder text is deeply appreciated. Usually, I'd say 3 out of 4 appointments begin on time. If I have to wait, it isn't more than about 10-15 minutes. Sandy has lots of energy and gives a positive vibe, despite scolding you if you haven't been in for a while. Sandy was super sweet, but she's not the person to go to for curly hair. The cut was questionable but I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt so I didn't say anything at the time. The styling experience was horrendous. She was literally pulling so hard on my hair while putting in gel that I had to cry out. She used a diffuser and SHOOK IT AROUND while it was in my hair and on. It was no surprise that my hair looked like a bird's nest when I walked out. After styling it myself it is ok....except I just noticed the one side is a full inch shorter than the other. That's after styling, so straight would be multiple inches. I'm sure she is good at what she does for straight hair, but calling herself a curly stylist and charging those prices (yikes!) is not reality. I hate to give a bad review, but I want to make sure other curlies go elsewhere. read more

Recently went to Sam & Bill's Hair Design for the first time, a really friendly atmosphere the whole time I was there. I was seen by Andrea who did highlights and a cut. I love the consult that helped her make the careful and right choices for my type of hair and personal likes. She was so personable and seemed very genuine and talented in her field. Very glad to have found this place and Andrea too! It was a bit higher than my budget allows for (as often as I likely will need color and a cut) but when my budget allows I will absolutely be at their doorstep! read more

Growing up, I was taught a very important lessons by my father: "You NEVER pay for cheap sushi or cheap haircuts. Nothing good can come from either of those decisions." It took a few poor decisions of my own before I stumbled upon Sam and Bill's. It's location is fairly ideal (near NCSU and Cameron Village), but the house that the business occupies can blend quietly into the neighborhood if you aren't actively looking for it. Nevertheless, the salon is friendly and inviting and all of the staff members do a great job of making you feel at ease. I judge a salon/barbershop by their ability to really listen to the customer; to do what we want rather than what the professional thinks is best. As the great GE Executive Jack Donaghy once said, "my hair is my headsuit," then I feel the same damn way. Sam and Bill's stylists always listened to my needs, spent extra time dealing with my picky nuances and in the end, delivered a consistently outstanding haircut for around $20. Greg and Sandy Brown own Sam and Bill's, which is located in a charming 90 year-old restored home that has a warm and inviting atmosphere featuring hardwood floors, fireplaces, and a coffee bar for your comfort. Conveniently located beside Cameron Village in the heart of Raleigh, additional treats of new restaurants and shopping are only a few steps away. I got my hair cut and colored by Erin, who was outstanding. I can't speak for any of the other stylists, but Erin does great color, cuts and does the best temporary straightening of curly hair I've seen. My hair is REALLY curly, and she made it perfectly straight and not frizzy. Trust me that is not easy to do. It's nice to support a place where the owners and everyone who works there takes such pride in their business. Greg, the owner, greeted me by name after meeting me one time, 2 months earlier. I decided to give Sam and Bill's a try after having just moved to Raleigh a few months ago, and I'm SO glad I did. First of all, I think for most people, especially we ladies who get more than just an occasional cut or blowout, we want the best person we can find who'll understand our hair and also provide impeccable customer service. Well, I found both of those in Kari! She not only did probably the best highlighting job I've ever had ( and I've been getting highlights for over 30 years), but she was also super friendly, easy to talk to and made what normally seems like a long appointment go by very quickly! Don't Say That You Don't Like Your Cut or You're Fired! For the record, I'm writing this review based on my experience only - it was the positive reviews of others that made me want to try this business in the first place. I arrive at the appointment, meet the stylist - she's friendly, has great hair, I'm thinking this is a good start. We discuss my hair issues - my previous stylist that I loved moved out of state so I'm in hair purgatory at the moment - and agree on a style. Unfortunately, her vision and mine were not in sync when the cut was finished - I'll get to that in a sec. As the stylist was cutting my hair, I noticed she favored the right side. I finally asked if she was going to cut more off the left to make both even and she did - a bit, but it was (is ) still uneven (not intentionally). When she was finished, I didn't get that "LOVE IT" feeling - it looked lopsided and like I was wearing a helmet in the front. I had asked for lighter, fringed bangs - they're heavy and cut in an uneven diagonal line (NOT fringed). She was going for a bob, but the front is choppy, the back is cute, and there are two sides hanging long in between that make no sense whatsoever (those sides need to be shorter to blend in better). Maybe if I was sitting for a photo, those odd sides would work, but they look like dog ears (behind the front cut). I did see good parts of the cut, didn't care for the helmet front, should have said something then, but didn't want to make a big deal out of it (especially as she was telling me how horrible her former boss was and how she cried every day at the other place - I didn't want to upset her - and note to stylist: customers don't really want to hear this). So I kept my mouth shut, paid, and went to lunch and looked at my hair more - my friend with me agreed it seemed like two different cuts (and wasn't working) - RANDOM people I asked said similar. Before I drove home, I called the salon back and was told that the stylist wasn't busy at that moment and I could come back then for her to fix it. I did and the stylist gave me a major attitude right from the start telling me it was 'what we discussed'. NOTE: I was not angry with that stylist - but I did not think she was going to hear what I was trying to say because she was defensive as soon as I walked into her room. I returned to the reception desk and asked if someone else could help me (I told her what happened). The reception person was very nice, looked for someone else, but all were busy with other clients. Another person came out and said someone would 'fix it' but again, all were busy. They finally said that one of the owners would fix it but she was busy for at least another 25 minutes. I couldn't wait that long to then get it re-cut so I scheduled an appointment for another day and I left thinking that all was well. The following day, I get a call from the guy that owns the place asking me what happened. I told him - and he implied that it was I who had the attitude and 'made a scene'. HONEST TO GODDESS READERS OF THIS REVIEW - I ABSOLUTELY DID NOT! I thought all was fine when I left the second time - and was happy that an owner would see the work that was done when I went in the following week. The other owner seemed more worried that his customers heard me discussing the problem at the desk - the salon is small and people are having their hair cut in that vicinity (granted, I was speaking in my normal tone of voice - not whispering). If he's so concerned about people overhearing anything that may make his salon seem less than perfect, then add a private consultation room to avoid this. Neither owner ever saw what my hair looks like - they have no idea of how the finished cut looks now. Instead, Greg said he'd refund my money and wished me well with another salon (this all on the phone). You know what? I'm better than fine with that. UPDATE: Greg is not being completely honest w/ his response here. My account of what happened is not dramatized (albeit a touch of humor was intended), it is accurate. As we spoke (on phone), Greg was fine about my coming back until I said the salon was small (which is why someone may have overheard), then he abruptly said he would refund my money. Defensive much? I paid $50 for a water spritz (no wash), cut, & blow dry. The cut was bad - all I wanted was for the front to blend in with the back. Something they could have fixed it in minutes, but instead I was treated as if I had done something wrong because I chose to tell them about it. That's just not fair - especially since neither owner saw the cut. For the record, we own a business too - and our customers are NEVER treated like that. read more

She is also awesome at providing recommendations when I wanted a change and also introduced me to products I will never stop using (Moroccanoil dry shampoo ). This is probably the most unsure I have been about the quality of a service ever. I am not a professional hair stylist and I do not claim to know what is right or wrong technique. But as someone who has been getting devacuts for more than two years now, I can tell when something is off. I have recently moved to raleigh and choose Sam and Bills bc of their great reviews. I went in for a devacut with Stephanie, and she did her part of making me comfortable and asking me questions about what I want. But the end result is something I am still very skeptical about, like i said since I am not a professional I will just let the pictures do the talking for this review- I have attached pictures of my current devacut from Sam and Bills and the okder ones I have been getting. It wont take much to tell which is which. All in all I am out of 100$, time i invested inwaiting to get an appointment, the hair length that i need to grow back if I want to try something next. Shilo saved me and my hair! She's honestly the hair superhero! I came in for a color correction ( April from Bella la Vi had done a number to my hair) and Shilo took my fried brassy hair and actually made it look good! Something I thought was going to be impossible! I had gone to 2 other hairstylist prior to her and no one wanted to touch my hair due to the terrible integrity of it, but she was very careful with it, trying not to overlap the highly processed pieces in efforts to salvage what I had. My hair is a work in progress and Shilo made sure to explain every step of the way while using very little hairstylist jargon that most don't understand and was also very transparent with the pricing before we even started...... this was something that I never got with April, so I was very appreciative of Shilo's professionalism. It is very easy to schedule appointments, and they are very accommodating for my schedule. The one time in the past six months that I got my haircut somewhere else, my wife almost kicked me out of the house. It looked like my hair had been attacked by a badger. Whitney is a miracle worker who refused to promise me a miracle . After years of searching and settling, Whitney fixed the hot mess the last stylist made of my hair. I'm so happy that I found her! She is an absolute artist who clearly takes pride in her work whether color or cut. I could tell as she was "cleaning up" the cut I walked in with that she really knew what she was doing as my hair fell perfectly the way it was supposed to and changed the shape of my face in a very good way. researched salons for my teenage daughter to go to- discovered S and B website. Seemed like a reputable place. unfortunately the stylist didn't reveal how much all the upcharges would be. at checkout she was shocked, went to pay, the receptionist asked her to tip and when my daughter told her how much to Add for the tip, the receptionist said "that's it?" shes a teen- wasn't aware of how much to tip on an already more expensive than anticipated style. Also, she told the stylist just a small trim - the stylist cut her long hair up to her shoulders. I called the salon- spoke with receptionist and the stylist- the stylist wasn't able to explain all the additional charges and said she would have the manager / owner contact me. This was on Friday . I have not heard from anyone- I also sent a private message on FB- it was read- no response. I tried to get some resolution and did not want to give a bad review. sadly, management not concerned. I was hoping to believe that they didn't take advantage of a teenager and this was a reputable salon. my Teenager learned a lesson - it's ok to ask what the additional fees will be before the service is performed. This salon should also make that part of their procedures as well. so, to sum up - 4 things went wrong here.... 1- stylist didnt disclose the additional charges making the hair appt very expensive. 2- receptionist comment regarding tip 3- stylist didn't understand "small trim" resulting in a very upset client not happy w shorter Hair style 4- being told the manager /owner will contact me- and as Of today 4 days later - nothing i am writing this review as I am the one who paid for the service and is the one who researched where my daughter should go. read more

I was a walk-in who needed a simple, quick one inch trim. The receptionist and hairdresser were friendly, my service was quick, my hairdresser answered my questions, I didn't get a wash as per my personal request, and I did get my ends trimmed, but this maximum 15 minute procedure cost me $50. I would maybe think that this was the minimum a hairdresser could charge, but the card I was given had $30 and $40 options. I still tipped my hairdresser as I would normally. I suppose the service wasn't terrible, but I felt jipped and disappointed that I was charged so much for an incredibly simple procedure. read more

After internet searching and reading the staff bios at Sam and Bill's, I scheduled and had a great cut and highlight with Whitney. Their services are not inexpensive, but for a higher-end salon prices are competitive. As other reviewers have commented, you do get what you pay for. I use Stephanie cause she is great with curly hair. The place is a converted house and always has flowers outside and coffee and snacks to greet you. Parking is fine in a lot across the street.
