When you walk in you notice this is a big room! There are a number of TVs that line the room tuned to sports of all kinds. The host(ess) greets your party and immediately escorts you to a table. As you walk into the restaurant you can feel a vibe that is lively, upbeat, young. There is music playing but not loudly. The furniture is dark and new, and comfortable for me to sit at a high-top, which is rare as my legs often swing in the air. I could perch on rungs on the chair which made things more comfy. The menu is clever and has some unusual and delicious offerings. I tried and loved the short rib grilled cheese--so tasty and savory. The French fries were good, and not greasy at all. The Giant Pretzel is exactly that! It came with queso and mustard dipping sauces. Espresso martinis were tasty and creamy too. The waitstaff were attentive but not hovering. I stopped by with two friends after work around 4 PM for an early dinner. We were able to get a table immediately due to beating the evening rush. The restaurant was massive, with two separate dining areas and multiple bars. It seems like the kind of place you could stop by after work and sit at the bar to have a drink and grab dinner solo. I ordered the southern BLT which was a fried green tomato, bacon, fresh arugula, and aioli on toasted sourdough bread, served with shoestring fries. The BLT was light, despite having a thick, fried slice of green tomato. I wish there had been a bit more aioli. My friends enjoyed their pulled pork sammie and Texas cheesesteak bomb sandwich. The real winner of the entire table were the Italian egg rolls that we got as an appetizer: mortadella, capicola, prosciutto, fontina cheese, vinegar peppers, EVOO, and balsamic reduction. We had a visibly disabled person with us and they still tried to seat us in the back. Our server was friendly, but after she took our order, she disappeared. It took almost 40 minutes for food to arrive. We had to check with management. Even after all that time, my order still came out incorrect. They remade my chicken sandwich, but it was pretty bland. The Mac and cheese needed more cheese sauce. My folks enjoyed their grilled cheese. The food was lukewarm, so it had obviously been sitting. Cocktail list was underwhelming. sam walker's american tavern is a new restaurant & bar in common square, part of their large remodel. i was in the area, and decided to give it a try, and i'm glad i did! i try to get into restaurants when they are new before the quality doesn't stand to the test of time, in general. this i sat at the bar and came in for the steak tips, but a woman next to me had ordered their cajun chicken pasta which i was also eye-ing on the menu. she said it was really good, and the bartender, timmy, said he gets it almost every day & it's good for leftovers too. the cajun chicken pasta was really delicious, packed with a ton of flavor, even though it doesn't look like it from the ingredients on the menu. i think it could use a little more veggies, maybe some peppers or something, but it was the perfect amount of spicy, not too much or too little. there were a few tiny pieces of sausage but not much. i was told the chicken was blackened but i didn't find that to be the case. i added parmesan cheese because it didn't have a ton of cheese flavor. overall, i still really liked it, just thought it could use a few tweaks. i ordered a sorry ms. jackson cocktail since i loved all the ingredients, and it was very good. timmy is a great bartender & attentive. cajun chicken pasta 8.2/10 sorry ms. jackson 10/10 overall, i'm surprised to give a tavern such a high rating, but i can't deny that the drinks and food were delicious. it is very big inside, very packed and very loud. i will return, and i'd recommend you check it out if you're in the area. ambiance: 4.7/5 drinks: 5/5 food: 4.1/5 service: 4.7/5 sam walker's american tavern: 4.6/5 read more

Tried this new restaurant today and it was good. They were on a brunch menu, and everything we got was delish. The place is big with 2 bar areas. We scheduled a reservation, service was good a little slow but that might be due to being new, yet gave us time to relax and chat. We ordered the Italian egg rolls, they were amazing, highly recommend!! Entree orders were hot chicken sandwich, buffalo chicken pizza, Nashville chicken and waffles (spicy HOT) but so good, and harvest salad with added chicken. Nice portions on all the meals. The food is excellent, I have had a number of their dishes and not once have I been disappointed. But the drinks are weak at best, I don't even order hard drinks there anymore. For the price of drinks they should be much better. read more

We've been here twice and really enjoy it. The atmosphere is beautiful, modern, clean, and very well done. It's definitely a place you want to sit and stay awhile. The drinks, though, are pretty pricey... even the beer. Not a dealbreaker, but definitely noticeable. My biggest disappointment was on my second visit when I realized they removed one of the only vegetarian entrée options, the veggie burger. It was SO good (best one I've EVER had) and honestly one of the main reasons I was excited to come back. I was really bummed to see it gone. A lot of restaurants forget that not everyone eats meat, and when there aren't thoughtful or creative vegetarian options, it can feel like an afterthought. When there are good options, it makes us feel included and excited to be there. Great spot overall, but I'd love to see them bring back a strong vegetarian option!!! read more

I went with my friend on a Friday early afternoon it was slow, we sat at the bar I ordered a glass of wine my friend ordered a white Russian it took 15mins to receive our cocktails my wine glass was not even 1/2 full for $15.00 my friends White Russian was in a tiny rocks glass not even shaken he asked the bartender to shake it that took another 10 mins we almost left but we decided to stay. The portions are a good size. I enjoy some of the food. The Bloody Mary cocktail is so peppery and spicy that I couldn't drink it. The pepper sits on your tongue. That's not how a Bloody Mary is supposed to taste. It should not be made in batches. The cosmo lacks vodka. The lobster Rangoons ($19.00) are lacking lobster. The fish dinner was delicious! We were very excited about the possibility of another good restaurant choice, but were sorely disappointed. Two of us ordered the 'steak bomb,' which was anything but that. Flavorless, small, and with none of the usual features of a 'steak bomb' those of us are familiar with. The third person in our party went for a reuben, which was also incredibly disappointing. Noting we went on a Sunday evening with the family so it was a bit busier, but that did not affect service whatsoever. For a place that's been open for only two weeks now they seem to be running smoothly. I had the Walker Burger Royale. It was pretty amazing! Hit the spot. Great portion sizes all around the table. Loved the idea of the "cocktail for a cause" libations. The Late Check-out is something I would definitely get again! Usually go for a beer but this was a pretty solid choice. Great options for kids too. Have a feeling this spot is going to fit right in to the Vinnin Square scene... and fills a void of a gathering spot for locals that the area has needed for some time as an alternative to the growing options on Humphrey St and Downtown Marblehead. She was dressed like a Valentine and was sweet as chocolate! The food. It was the 2nd time we had been there and every time there was an issue with the food. This time the wings were very dry and the truffle fries had no truffle. We decided to drive back (wasting our time, food getting cold), only to go to the front desk and they failed to give me the 2nd bag. Sam Walker's is brand new to Vinnin Square in Swampscott. The whole Stop and Shop plaza is undergoing renovations so parking is dicey. Once we got inside (reservations strongly advised), we were seated promptly. Our server Sophia was extremely friendly and helpful. The drinks, appetizers and dinner were all served very quickly. Of note; they have an extensive beer selection on tap. My wife chose the turkey burger which was perfect. I chose the pepperoni pizza which included hot honey. The hot honey took the pizza to another dimension; I've never had it before but can't imagine having pizza again without it! The only negative was I ordered dessert to go and it took longer to get that than the wait for our dinners. To be fair and honest this was only their second day open and they were very busy. Meh. In fairness, we'd not have gone for lunch if we'd realized a brunch menu both weekend days until 3 - not horrible, but limited and missing a caesar salad that is my go-to lunch pick.... Great vibe and huge bar - we'll probably try it during the week with a full menu, but am feeling a little generous with my three stars since the food was borderline and just Okay. The dry rub wings were disappointing, good wings with a boring rub (we have them everywhere, and compare...). Likewise mediocre was the grilled chicken sandwich. I forget what sandwich my husband had that was also just okay, but we agreed the fries were notably sub-par, and to me that's a real measure of s good pub/tavern - they may as well have been frozen, and maybe they were. Decent wine by the glass (I like Whitehaven), altho wish they had the option for a 9 oz pour, just saying...
