Not off to a great start. Came in the afternoon to grab a bite at the bar and was promptly ignored for the phone and chatting at the other end of the bar. I suppose if you're not a local in a tourist town, you shouldn't expect customer service, at least here anyway. After a not-quite-awkward amount of silent time watching the bartenders back, we were addressed. Look the long and short was the service struck me wrong from moment one and I no longer felt welcome when sitting down to eat. Beer selection was decent. Sip o sunshine makes for an excellent sauce. The food was excellent. Salty, delicious roast beef on a perfectly toasted roll, Rueben set up perfect with melting cheese catching the light from the high placed windows. Decor is was cool. Old world nautical theme throughout with rich dark wood tables and chairs. Maybe she had a bad day, maybe I did, and this was what was perceived. Wanted a welcoming lunch place to pop in when I'm in the next town and didn't find it today. The sad part is though the food was good, I don't think the wife and I will give it another go. Coming in, we were greeted by friendly waiters. A very homey vibe. They gave us moist cornbreads and a warm toasted bread roll. We ordered a bowl of clam chowder . I was not disappointed. Though I was expected the bowl to be a bit bigger. Which makes me wonder what the cups size would look like.(around $10 for bowl). The steak sirloin is a bit tough to eat. The burnt marks make it taste bitter. It's probably my least favorite thing. The fish sandwich was messy to eat. I split it in half to share . As soon as I started eating it , the whole sandwich just fell apart. Honestly, there isn't anything too special about the haddock sandwich. Scallop is one of my favorite as it is soft and creamy where it kinda melts in your mouth. read more

First experience Nice cozy interior, absolutely loving the color scheme and lighting. Staff is very very friendly. They appear to keep thier taps in top condition. As soon as we were seated they brought out corn bread and dinner rolls, both were very good and the corn bread wasn't too sweet either. I ordered the popcorn shrimp, crab cakes, ceasar salad and lobster casserole. Excellent dressing on the ceasar, popcorn shrimp was cooked to perfection, same can be said for the crab cakes. Both came with a really good dipping sauce. I would also like to add that there was a generous amount of shrimp. Forgot to take a picture of the lobster casserole but it was also great. If you eat seafood often you will notice when it is fresh or not, today it was very very fresh. I would give this place at least a strong 4.3, I don't understand why the average rating is currently only at what it is. Would love to know where everyone is used to eating at. read more

In town to celebrate Halloween in the Salem/Peabody/Swamscott/Marblehead area...and this was the best meal we had all week! Service was great too...and very cozy atmosphere...only thing that would make it better would be a fireplace. Steak tips, baked potato and side salad were all very good, but the star of the evening were the onion rings and baked stuffed shrimp...deeelicious! Ambiance is fine, but far too upscale for the level of food served. Service was slow even with an empty building, and the waitress dropped one our menus on the ground because she cared that little. Mind you it was an EMPTY building, not like she was in a rush. Food was overpriced generic sysco BS and overcooked, super sad for a seafood place in Marblehead a stones away from the ocean. DO NOT waste your time here. Walked in around 5:30 PM with a group of four, and the place was dark and unwelcoming from the start. We were greeted by a young hostess who slammed waters onto our table without manners -- when we said "thank you," her only response was a rude "yup." We ordered drinks: two non-alcoholic beverages, one rum and coke, and an Oktoberfest. It took 10 minutes for the drinks to arrive. The rum and coke was strong (which some might like), but we actually received three non-alcoholic drinks -- so clearly something was off. Water refills were a hassle throughout the entire visit. The same young girl took our cups (possibly mixed up) instead of just refilling at the table, and again, all we got was a "yup." Our waiter -- a young college-aged guy -- had better energy, but that's about the only highlight along with the appetizer wings, which were decent. Mail meals we ordered: Calamari (came out ice cold) Two stuffed shrimp dishes-requested two mashed potatoes(only one mashed potato between them which was cold and bland, baked potato was also cold and never requested) Honey almond haddock (TINY portion, no side options were originally given -- fries were cold and greasy, coleslaw was forgettable, those were sides given) Service was incredibly slow. We waited 45-60 minutes for food. Meanwhile, larger parties that arrived after us were served within 20-30 minutes. Other tables received bread -- we did not. We had to ask for water three times, and another soda that took yet another 10 minutes to arrive. Overall, the staff seemed young, undertrained, and indifferent. There is zero pride in the service here. Between cold food, long wait times, and rude service, this was a complete disappointment. Only reason this isn't a 0-star review: the strong rum and the wings. Otherwise, absolutely not worth your time. read more

Very unwelcoming hostess who seats us. For the second time insulted us about how long we sit at the table! Stating that "I could turn over that table 3-4 times for the length of time you sit there!! She seats us way in the back by the kitchen. (Although the entire front of the restaurant was open) All four of us were freezing as we were seated directly under the blower which seems to be the main blower for the AC in the area. Good place to dine with friends. Met some friends here for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. We started with the fried pickle appetizer, which was served with a spicy sauce and the combination was really yummy. I opted for the steak tips, based on recommendations from friends and I'm so glad I did. They were delicious! My two friends who also got the steak tips really enjoyed them as well. We visit family in Marblehead and this is definitely one of the places on the short list, honestly, because of their menu offerings. Their fried shrimp is pretty darned good and their classic New England coleslaw accompaniment is done better than others around the area (many have a vinegar base)! Fries are solid, straight cut, and very good. We had Bacon Wrapped Scallops for an appetizer and we're impressed! The service was very pleasant and efficient. We had a round of drinks from the bar before dinner. The bloody mary was heavy on horseradish, the MBC Lunch seemed a little less than fresh, and the Switchback Amber was perfect! We are staying at a nearby B&B and walked in on a whim. Everything we ate was delicious. The fish sliders are a large portion, and I ate it with the jalapeño dipping sauce that came with my friend's popcorn shrimp. The clam chowder wasn't too thick but the flavor was great. Good sized menu and the food quality never disappoints me. Love the Reuben and the fried seafood platter is my "go to" - but I do feel they cut down on the portion size considerably from years ago. I'd rather have you up the price by $5-10 and put the portion size back to what it was. You cut back on clams - ok - I get it .... But half the fries from before? I almost can excuse the inflation grab-back -- but why skimp on fries? And a couple spoonfuls of cole slaw just feels cheap. Come on... you could double the current sizes of slaw and fries for an extra 50 cents cost and mask the fact that your seafood content has been halved. Slaw also needs to be COLD to taste fresh. Don't let it sit out on a hot plate. It's the last item to add on the plate before served. Service has been fine overall, but my last visit it was definitely slow (6-7minutes?) to just get a visit for initial drinks, silverware and menus passed around. Anyone can have a bad day, so I chalk this up to only having one waitress to cover the entire bar table area. When it fills up, it can happen to the best of them. Overall, this is a good choice for locals and visitors alike. My comments are intended to keep this town favorite around for many years to come! read more

When you point out that the price you were charged is different than the price on the menu they will be dismissive, condescending and rude. Came for a drive to Marblehead and gave this place a try. They have a bar on one side and a restaurant on the other. The hostess and the waitress were very nice. Was given a hot roll and corn bread. Had a cup of clam chowder and the Scrod Special which came with coleslaw and French Fries. Both were very delicious. I came on a Sunday at about 11:30am. First time ordering from this place. We picked up a Nor'Ester, lobster roll and a side of fries. It took a minute or two for someone to check in at the front desk as it seemed to be busy on a Thursday night. I was surprised to see the lobster roll was over $22 dollars however it did come with a healthy serving of lobster. I noticed no prices were listed online. The toasted bun was slightly burnt but still fine. The fries were good as well as the coleslaw I had from the Nor'Ester plate. I will come back to try more items from their menu. read more

I would give this place a five star review, if it weren't for the strange service by one waitress. We were seated promptly by the hostess. There was a waitress that was clearly working the four tables (only two others were occupied) in our corner of the restaurant. She passed by us many times delivering drinks, food, and condiments to one table. She also delivered water and took the order from the second table. I understand being busy. I've been a waitress before, so I get it! But it takes no time to say, "Good evening. I'll be right with you." Instead, she purposely looked away from us. After 15 minutes of sitting there, an older woman came by and apologized. She promptly gave us water and took our order. It almost seemed like she was the owner or manager? She seemed surprised we had not been waited on. From this point on, the service was good. I asked for extra lemon with my fish and chips and she brought me two whole cut lemons! While visiting Salem MA, we wanted to try an authentic seafood joint and ran across this one. The ambiance is great as was the service. We of course wanted to try Lobster while in MA, so we ordered 3 different lobster dishes. All were good but have to say lobster is not our thing. Being from MD we all decided we will take a good crab cake over a lobster roll. This was no fault of the restaurant, just a preference.
