We came here for an early breakfast. The restaurant was half empty when we arrived but was quickly starting to fill up by the time we finished eating. The staff was great, very attentive and efficient. My wife ordered their avocado toast and I ordered their biscuits & gravy. Both dishes were unique and definitely not your traditional dishes. The avocado toast cake topped with a jicama slaw and queso fresco. Very unique to put queso fresco on top of avocados and jicama but it worked and my wife loved it. The biscuits and gravy came with charred brussel sprouts which added some additional flavor that you don't expect in a biscuits and gravy dish, but it tasted phenomenal with it. I wouldn't say this place serves hearty dishes, more on the healthier side, so I don't see myself returning often but will definitely be back. read more

We popped in on a Sunday afternoon and it was busy but we were able to find a table for three. Service was friendly and fast. I ordered the special which was an egg and sausage breakfast sandwich on an herb biscuit - sooooooo good! I could eat 40 of those biscuits. I just got off a 2+ hour flight into Chicago from Houston. The Blue Line train is my friend when I visit home. But the early morning flight left me without breakfast. Had an extremely disappointing experience here today with my friends. No waitstaff did as much as make eye contact with us the entire time. We ordered off the QR codes on the table (not even a physical menu, which I guess is normal these days but annoying.) Pictured is the sandwich my boyfriend paid $15 for, with no sides except for some coleslaw served in one of those tiny ketchup cups. I mean seriously, $15 for one piece of turkey?? But at least they threw in 3 of the world's tiniest pickles, so that was pretty generous. I got the cobb salad (also $15) and the portion was fine enough, but the dressing tasted like straight vinegar. I didn't ask for a refund or for a different meal because me and my friends were on a time limit. So we just sucked it up. When we ordered with the QR code, it had us pay right then too, so we had to tip before receiving any service. I tipped 18% and it was still too much. The servers never checked in on us or asked us how it was. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because the place was clean and the ambiance was nice. They sat us immediately and brought out the food quickly. Literally thought I was on an episode of Portlandia, we walked in and asked for a table for 4, the guy literally sighed and said well we don't take reservations so I guess you can come back in 20-30 minutes and check. So we went outside literally laughing about rude that was and low and behold another, actually kind worker, tells us a table just opened. OR order an appetizer and drink before your meal, you use an iPad thing and have to place tour entire order at once to send it in. So no questions about the food, no apps first, nope, just put everything in at once and tip before you even talk to a person. What the actual hell kind of system is that? The food was actually pretty dang good besides the maria, a turkey sandwich that came out looking nothing at all like the picture and instead looked like wet chopped ham, when I asked why the turkey was literally ham colored their reasoning was it was smoked.... I have had many smoked turkeys in my life and they have never looked or tasted like ham. Egg salad and veggie patty melt were bomb but the vibes were so awful I would never suggest this place to anyone. If you wanna try it get take out. read more

I cannot recommend this place enough! I'm not one that is easily impressed. Especially for breakfast food, but this place was quite special. The food was excellent. A very nicely balanced plate (I got the eggs and sausage) I was very surprised with how well the arugula went with the rest of the food, but what really made it good was the homemade biscuits that come with it! All the food seemed to be from scratch even boasting locally raised eggs! The service was simple. One friendly guy worked the counter, with maybe 1 other person cooking. But I have to yap to someone Same Day Cafe so yall are gonna listen. My partner and I stumbled into this spot by chance, and I feel like we won the lottery. To start: The atmosphere is adorable. This cafe manages to feel authentically like an old school diner without having that fake/tacky feel nor feeling so authentic that it feels icky/run down: two thumbs up for accomplishing this. Moving on, the reason you are reading this: THE FOOD. I am not exaggerating when I say it might be the single greatest tragedy of my life if I never have their vegan patty melt again. I was nearly in tears while eating it. I added Gruyère to mine and would recommend. The caramelized onions were cooked perfectly, the veggie patty was flavorful and had a variety of textures (as opposed to your typical mushy or dry vegan patty) , the rye toasted to perfection and all pulled together with just the right amount of aioli. GET THIS SANDWICH. And don't skip on the side of carrots with coconut and crème fraiche - another review-worthy dish that I'll be dreaming of. We also ordered the green beans and biscuit, which were solid... but if I came back I'd skip on these to have more room for the sandwich and carrots. Had to get to this cafe after seeing it on a previous morning in Logan Square, and glad I made it back. It looks like an ordinary cafe from the outside. Same Day Cafe is actually quite a different kind of place though. For sure it has the breakfast and lunch basics like eggs. There's also a lot for vegans including shakes and sandwiches. Came later in the morning when there were lunch items also available. It was an opportunity to try a few interesting things on the menu. This place has items for both meat eaters and vegans. Good prices for the quality and considering it's a hipster area. We had to get a vegan shake. Each of us got the shake with coconut ice cream, pineapple, and rum. It's $12 so it's kind of expensive but it also has alcohol in it so not too bad for this. Basically it was a shake version of a pina colada. We got stuff to eat too. I had the Vegan Patty Melt. It's $12 but it's a pretty big one. This had a vegan burger made of black beans, oatmeal, and rice. It had vegan red pepper mayonnaise. This also came with mushrooms and onions. Efficient ordering and paying system all using your phone to complete everything. It wasn't slow to use like at many places that use it. Awful place. I've been here three times over the last year, maybe on me at this point for returning, and each time has left a bad taste in my mouth. Can't remember what I've had every time but did try the three sides and the Cobb salad. While the chicken salad was good, the carrots were like water logged and wimpy, the green beans I received were definitely rancid, and the dressing on the Cobb salad was broken with chunks of solidified oil in it. On another occasion I've witnessed who I believe to be owner interact with staff, and treat them absolutely awfully, that was the thing that solidified me never returning. Sitting at the bar and being able to see into that little kitchen space, the kitchen staff is always on their phones back there, doesn't look like they wash their hands enough which is pretty unsanitary. Before Same Day Cafe existed, I used to go to the Flipside Cafe when I was younger and was in love with everything they made there. I was really happy to rediscover this place and to find that while the cookies have remained the same (delicious!), the menu has only expanded. The food here is great and the service is just as good. Every time I stop in the servers are happy to answer any of my questions and get my food to me as quickly as possible. With such communicative and lovely staff, the food is just a bonus. I recommend trying their famous brown sugar & brown butter cookie, as well as any of their shakes or sodas. Most recently, I had their earl grey latte (a special) and it knocked my socks off. The food is made fresh to order and served hot. My niece and I both ordered the grilled cheese sandwich with a cup of tomato soup. The soup is made from scratch and tastes amazing. Our sandwiches were made with a combination of cheddar and smoked Gouda. We added bacon and tomato. It was the best grilled cheese that I have ever had. The bread was crunchy good and the cheese was plentiful. The soup pulled it all together. My husband chose the Mushroom Toast. It is made with mushrooms and onions that are cooked with brandy and cream. They put it on a thick piece of rosemary toast with a sunny side egg. I used to live near here. Even when I moved, I still made a point to come here after leaving the gym. The atmosphere is so cute, and the people are nice. But the food is SO good. They've got all the yummy toasts you want. Eggs, avocado, all that shit us girls love. Yes, I'm a sucker for avocado toast with a poached egg. I've had other food here plenty of times like the Fried egg toast, the plum brioche and other pastries and lunch items but it was this scone that set it over the top. Went to Logan Square for Sunday brunch but the restaurant we wanted to go to had a decent wait, so we ended up at Same Day and got a table for 2 almost immediately! Side note: this place used to be a dry cleaners with same day service (or so it seems from the signage). Ordered the Fried Egg Toast and was very pleased with it (though not entirely full afterwards). My favorite thing about it has got to be the bread...not sure what it is about it. I couldn't believe how much I loved this. We came for brunch, and while I expected it to be good, I was pretty blown away by how good it was. We got the tomato toast with egg and bacon, fried egg toast with avocado, chilaquiles, and two cookies (double chocolate and white chocolate lavender). Everything about the tomato toast was really amazing, and the chilaquiles were so much better than I was expecting. The cookies were excellent as well, and (thankfully) not overly huge.
