I had recently shifted to a strict pescatarian Mediterranean diet, so I was scrambling to find places that had grilled fish and brown rice. Simple Cafe did not disappoint. I dined here twice in August of 2023, and again four times during my most recent trip to the OSF last month. My review is based on a composite of all six visits. Food: The food is delicious. I exclusively order the fish tacos, which are (possibly homemade) corn tortillas stuffed with grilled steelhead trout (looks like salmon to the layperson, but it's trout), a light sauce, avocado, and veg, served with a side of organic brown rice. Incredible! My wife sometimes orders the tacos as well, while my daughter prefers the teriyaki chicken and vegetable bowl on a bed of organic brown rice. My delighter can't stop talking about how tender and juicy the chicken was. Needless to say, we'll be back. Service: The service is appropriately basic, in the best possible way. There is no table service, but our interactions with staff when ordering at the shack (it's a very nice shack) have always been pleasant, professional, and quick. The food comes out quickly, so listen for your name! Your taste buds want that fresh food! Ambiance: The ambiance reminds me of the shacks you might find in beach towns right by the ocean, selling incredible food to the hungry masses. A number of tables with sturdy attached umbrellas fill the patio beside the shack where all the magic happens, and the staff come out and clean the tables regularly. The street on which Simple Cafe sits is a small tree-lined street off the main thoroughfare, so you'll be able to enjoy your meal in an equally beautiful location. As others have noted, Simple Cafe is right beside the local hardware store, which gives the place that "locals only" secret location kind of feel. To paraphrase Gordon Ramsay, Simple Cafe is simple (duh), rustic, and delicious. If you are stopping by Ashland for a visit or just a quick pit stop, head on down to Simple Cafe. If it isn't obvious by now, I recommend the Fish Taco plate, perhaps two.

We went across the street to the Oak Tree for breakfast the rest of our time at the Ashland Hills - they had real table service with a cheerful waitress and it took 15 minutes from order to delivery. For what it's worth, the food at Luna was pretty good - but definitely not worth the wait.

I would recommend Sammich based on their sandwiches. Mine was very tasty. However, I will never patronize this establishment ever again. I gave my order to a person whose name I believe was Georganne (or something very similar). After the transaction was completed I said... "Thank you Hon" ....or I might have said "Thank you my dear". Either way she proceeded to tell me that her name was Georganne. It was not stated with kindness - but with attitude. I then told her "I am so sorry to have offended you" to which she replied "we are changing the landscape one paradigm at a time". I said nothing in reply. It is such a shame people must take this kind of an attitude when it is obvious and clear that someone is just being genuinely kind and trying to be relatable...especially now when our world is full of hard and difficult times. If you have a particular belief system, indeed stick up for your beliefs... but this is a sandwich shop, not a political forum. There is such a thing as being too politically correct, which I believe can totally dismiss human interaction and camaraderie. What could have been a wonderful new place to eat while visiting Ashland was completely ruined. read more

Michael Jordan is to basketball, as the famous Sammich Timbo is to the world of sandwiches. This traditional style Chicago cheese-steak is on point every single time. I was warned in-house you don't 'dunk it'... Chicago style is to get it soaking wet then go in for the kill. Yes ma'am. Michael Jordan probably wouldn't hate doing it Sammich style. ;) I have tried most things on the menu. I consider myself somewhat of a sandwich connoisseur and this place will be famous one day. The veggies local and the bread ALWAYS so fresh. Their specials are creative and have an artisan pizazz that makes my mouth water just reading them. The atmosphere is comfortable and full of character, making it perfect for a quick bite or a gathering with friends. I have to say I love Sammich! Today was the 6th time I have been there in 8 weeks, the day they opened. I have tried something different every time. Today I had the Salmon Sammich special. It was amazing! I have tried theTimChan, Chicago Italian Beef, Albacore Tuna, Turkey, Hammich and last but not least the Pastrami! Everything is such great quality and fresh! Thought maybe by ordering different Sammich's the chef might slip up and make something I didn't like. So far that has not happened. I highly recommend Sammich. I will be back. This place is INCREDIBLE! They are doing some huge things in this little spot. Melissa (the Owner) is a riot. She is hilarious, if you don't have a non-existent sense of humor. The staff is fun and relaxed, but Man, they pump out the best sandwiches, like they could do it in their sleep. They are ON IT. I can't recommend this place enough. This place is so passionate about their quality house smoked meats and local and house made ingredients! I got the Spicy Italian beef sandwich and homemade potato salad. It was gone in mere minutes! My wife got the burger with special Sammie sauce and was in heaven.
