There's so many options in the small town of Ashland for fun local restaurants, it can be hard to choose! However, if you have the chance to stop in Bird & Rye and love freshly fried chicken and some delicious local ciders, this is the place to be! The restaurant is pretty small and very bare bones, but that makes it feel more like a Midwest barbeque place and helps with the ambiance. Our server was quick and lovely and attentive, and we all had a variety of the chicken options, fries, and Mac and cheese. I will say the Mac and cheese was nothing to write home about, probably a 3 out of 10 for me. But the chicken sandwich was 10 out of 10 for sure. We revisited this restaurant recently, and there are a couple of changes. They now have table service. So they will come to your table, bring menus and take your order, which is nice. I got the two piece fried chicken with the collard greens again, but my husband got the chicken fried sandwich with dark meat and the collard greens. The sandwich was very good, but it was messy. He thinks he'll stick with just a regular two piece fried chicken. Those collard greens are absolutely Delicious. The service was very friendly. A friend recommended this as a dinner stop before wrapping up my Sunday in Ashland, and I enjoyed my corned duck sandwich, which was served on Reuben bread with sauerkraut, which was listed as a special on the chalkboard menu to the right of the back wall as you enter. It was quiet around six pm; the basketball game was playing on the large screen on the other back wall, and the music was not too loud. The deviled egg appetizer came out very quickly (you get four halves) and both that and the hush puppies, which followed soon after came with a couple of pickle slices each, which I appreciated. First off I noticed they have a huge bourbon menu (as most places I've been to in Oregon. Apparently Boubon is a big thing in Oregon). Then ordered the chili (venison, duck, brisket) MY GAWD I WANTED TO LICK THE BOWL! It's a little hidden gem in Ashland. The menu is not healthy-eating focused. The seating options are limited. Too loud. It is fun to sit at the counter and watch the cooks, but that only works if there are 2 people in your party. I've eaten here several times and the food quality is very inconsistent. I'm really sadly disappointed by this food. I had heard amazing things, the menu is great, but the food was bland. Maybe I've spent too much time in the south eating actually good southern food. the mac n cheese was basically nothing, the potato chips added nothing and the cheese had no flavor. We came all the way from Portland, OR to enjoy some gluten free fried chicken (moist, juicy, tasty), steak fries (crispy and flavorful), and macaroni and cheese (comforting). It has a rustic, comforting atmosphere. It's kind of small, and luckily we were there on a Thursday evening where there were still seats open. The only reason why I gave four instead of five stars is because the waitress (woman with short brown hair) was friendly (smiling, laughing) to my 70 year old dad, she was almost rude to me (woman in 20s) for no reason that we could figure out. The bar appears to be more focused on mixed drinks in terms of alcoholic beverages. They offer four wines by the glass (good local wine which is appreciated), a few seltzers, and beers. So there is a little something for everyone. Great happy hour selection for food. We had the brisket dip, which was good. Menu said it came with brown gravy, but mine did not. Their collard greens are really good (has slices of brisket in it). Their brisket pinto beans were good as well. I also ordered a quarter chicken Nashville hot. The flavor was good in terms of the breading and sauce, but the chicken was a little chewy for some reason. It was not juicy, as I would expect it to be. I would like to try their chicken wings in the future as their full in size. Only option for dessert are ice cream sandwiches. read more

But for a paper thin beef piece of dryer out beef, it's up the with Old Trapper and dog food. Wedge salad was ok. I mean, how can you really mess up a salad. Add toppings and dressing and any sandal would've tasted good. Popcorn chicken,buffalo sauce as I wasn't feeling like running to the bathroom with the Nashville hot sauce experience. These were ok if you like Tyson grade frozen nuggets. I guess the saving grace is knowing how to mix hidden valley and sriracha together, like your some kinda wizard who first figured putting a sword into a big stone would be clever. Bbq beans were a nice spice. Can't really fault them. Collard greens were ok, not enough vinegar for my taste, but nice ratio to meat and greens. Coleslaw was also ok. Not as refreshing as a good coleslaw should be, but semi passable. All in all. The food is a solid two stars. And from the looks of it. This business needs to get pushed down a few pegs. Most of the dishes at Bird & Rye revolve around fried chicken, which is super rad. If you're a hungry thru-hiker, the sandwiches are huge. They also have vegetables and salads if you need to add some health to your diet. You can fried chicken to your health to balance things out, but be warned, you just get a little plate with a chunk of chicken.
