First time coming here and we will be back. Make sure to make reservations; you can come without reservations but expect a wait. The interior is something has the "old school" feel to it; old photos cover the walls. Nice music playing (a bit loud). They brought out fresh bread and bread sticks. We had to repeatedly request olive oil and balsamic vinegar but honestly, you don't need them. The bread has a really nice hint of rosemary and they taste freshly baked. We had the Caesar salad and these are quite good. Oddly no croutons or parmesan cheese. It's a delicious salad but just missing the typical accoutrements. We also shared an order of Calamari and it's quite good. For our main entrees, we had Cacio e Pepe, Rigatoni Bolognese and Lasagna. I tried the Cacio e Pepe and I know that is what I'm having the next time we visit here. It's an amazing pasta dish. The Rigatoni was also quite good. For the lasagna, it is good, but honestly, a bit heavy. They do not scrimp on the cheese or meat, but it was heavier on the mozzarella cheese and too little of ricotta (if there was any). The lasagna portion they serve is easily enough for four people, so if you are with a group and want to share a meal, just order one lasagna. We had a variety of drinks and they were mostly disappointing. I do realize it's an Italian restaurant but I would still think they could serve just about any drink. I ordered a cocktail and when it was brought out, I was told "this is our version" and it was bad enough I had to send it back. The server was nice and told me that wasn't a problem. Ended up having a dirty martini with olives. To start off... the olives! I never thought I would complain about olives in a drink but these were not cocktail olives. And the martini was pretty bad and ended up not finishing. One in our party wanted wine and the server was not at all knowledgeable about the wine list. In fact, neither were the bartenders. Their cocktail/wine list is 26 pages and we just didn't have time to review it all. The glass of wine brought out was red and our friend specifically said she wanted something white. I went to the bar and the bartender couldn't give a recommendation. What's the point of this extensive wine list if your employees don't know much about it. I've worked as a server and had to memorize the entire bar menu. We ordered desert and we were going to take it home; My friends had Tiramisu and they said it was the best they have ever had. I had the NY Cheesecake and it was quite good but I don't believe they make it. The downside of our experience was the hostess. Some hostesses seem to feel they wield control and abuse that... as did this person. We did not have reservations and simply just wanted to put our name on a list for anything whether it was outside or at the bar if we couldn't get a table. It was 8pm and were being told 9:30 - 10pm. Although there were three empty tables outside and there were spaces available at the bar, the hostess was being quite obstinate. After awhile, it seemed as if she wouldn't even take our names but ultimately she did take our name and number. After an hour of waiting, we went back inside to see where we were on the list. It was now 9pm and there were plenty of open tables and she sat us right away. The bigger question is how long had those tables been open? I'm 100% sure if we never came back... they never would have actually called us. Extremely poor service by the hostess. I've been to small diners and they will text you updates on your spot on the list. So, if you put your name down on the waitlist, check back frequently because it's likely they will never contact you. Hostesses seem to have a power trip here. read more

Apparently we were lucky to quickly be seated at the bar. This place always seems booked solid. You need a reservation a day in advance, maybe even a couple of days. The service was good. The food was great. The ambiance was very classy and so cute. We will be visiting again very soon. Hopefully next time we'll have better seating. Unfortunately, a very loud drunk person was seated next to us. - We visited again. Apparently they charged us per soda. Unfortunately the person I was with had about 4 glasses through the appetizer and dinner ended up paying $40 worth of soda. And the weight between our Caesar salad and steak was in incredibly long, maybe 25 mins or so.. Husband and I were on a date for the first time in a long time so we didn't mind the wait... Forgot to take pictures, but my fiancé and I went recently and have been talking about it since. The ambiance is very nice and reminiscent of an old school Italian spot. It is on the smaller side so it's a little loud, but not so loud that we couldn't hear each other. On par with our food was the service. We got clean plates and utensils after every round that came out along with the table being wiped down. Now on to the food it was amazing! Although we couldn't get everything like we wish we could lol I felt that we got a perfect Sammie's first time order. We ordered the clams, Caesar salad (agreed the best we have ever had), mafaldine, alla vodka, chicken parm, crispy potatoes, grilled broccoli, and ended the meal with a cheesecake. We had a friend in town from Houston who wanted to make Sammie's part of her Austin food tour :) Walked in at 5 because no reservations were available and they seated us promptly with one stipulation, and that was that we had to be out by 7 so they could accommodate a reservation. Fine by us! We were a group of 5 and not totally starving due to having a heavy/late lunch at Casper's Fermentables so we shared appetizers. For starters, I will say the ambiance of the restaurant was very intimate and alluring, I loved every bit of it. I wish I would have taken photos of my food but it looked so divine I didn't get the chance too. We started off with Sammie's meatballs and I ordered the Gnocchi di Nonna Rita, which hands down was some of the best gnocchi I've had in quite some time. Our waiter was very attentive and consistently came around making sure our drinks were filled and our table was precisely clean. This was our first time at Sammie's and we loved it! The lighting is dim and private, the food is delicious, the service is great and they even made a mocktail for me on the spot that was yummy since they didn't have any listed on the menu. I will say, it get pretty loud once the place fills up so be prepared for not hearing people well. Definitely entering our rotation of restaurants. Also be prepared for parking. For years, I have thought "no way this place can be that good" and that it must've been hyped up for the cute ambiance. I finally got over eating late and snagged a spot for 9:30 PM last night. Sammie's exceeded my expectations-- and I consider myself an Italian snob! I've already booked my next reservation and this is easily one of the best restaurants in Austin, TX. Even the "basics" are soooo good! We started with the mozzarella sticks which were INSANE. Basil pesto ranch??? Say less. Best mozzarella sticks ever. Then, we had the meatballs with ricotta. A perfectly cooked meatball! Next, we had the caesar salad. I think this could feed 4 women, but the 2 of us devoured it. I genuinely believe it's one of the best caesar's I've ever had. Sooo crunchy and the dressing has a lemony zing. For our entree, we had the vodka pasta. Delicious. Perfect sauce, perfectly cooked noodles, just perfect. It was creamy, oniony, garlicky... bit of red pepper kick... divine. I'm unashamed to say I left the bowl completely clean-- not a drop of sauce was left behind lol. I think everyone needs to try all of these dishes at least once! Firstly, love the ambiance of this place - very old school Chicago style Italian eatery...small but packs in a good number of people. Secondly, a shoutout to restaurants that pay attention to OpenTable 'celebrations'. They brought out a glass of Prosecco for the both of us since we were celebrating our anniversary and I loved that - great service! Now on to the food: 1. Started with the shrimp francese which was amazing and we wanted to literally drink the butter lemon sauce, HOWEVER for $23 to get 3 shrimp each? Nahhhh 2. Pasta #1 was spaghetti al limone - so simple yet so damn good with the panchetta (no shortage of this) and the homemade noodles and just all around comforting pasta 3. Pasta #2 was the real star - the lasagna and holy shit for $36 this portion is YUGE and perfection. Comes out right from the oven and is soo cheesey and meaty and saucy and doing its thing in all the right places. YUM. Ended with the tiramisu which was great and always needed regardless if you're ready to unbutton your pants. Always room for some cream soaked cake. Make a reservation. Go here. Sammie's is a hit! The negative reviews tempered my expectations but every dish was prepared well, service was attentive, and the vibe was immaculate. We started with the Caesar salad and calamari. Both were excellent! To me, it was a perfect Caesar with a mountain of parmesan. The cavatell di giorgio was a small portion with a savory marsala cream sauce. Also got the cheese ravioli and it was simple but well done. Ended the meal with the tiramisu which was rich but balanced. It was the perfect amount of food for two. Sammie's is a MUST try!! We were lucky and able to score a last minute same day reservation. We've been trying to come for months! We tried quite a few things... Limoncello Drop Cocktail - INCREDIBLE!! Easily one of the best, most balanced cocktails I've ever had! Not too sweet, not too sour. Could be dangerous! Warm Burrata - SO YUMMY. Not quite enough bread, but left us wanting more. I'm sure we could've asked for extra, but knew we had lots of food coming. Ceasar Salad - DELICIOUS!! Easily one of the best ceasar salads I've ever had. Has a little kick to it, making us wanting more. Large portion, but worth the $16 Linguine Vongole - TASTY! Nice portion size, lots of clams, well seasoned. Cacio e Pepe - SO SO GOOD! I am always skeptical of this dish on menus because it can easily be under seasoned... well this is one of the best I've tasted! Very balanced, filling, and I plan on ordering this next time. NY Style Cheesecake - HUGE portion! Nicely paired with a chocolate sauce & raspberry sauce. Had this with an espresso martini. What a wonderful way to end the night! Overall, great portion sizes, left feeling extremely satisfied and excited to come back again to try more of their pastas & cocktails. Be prepared for it to get loud inside. We had a 5:15pm reservation, but by 6:30 the restaurant was completely full and noisy. That's what I've come to expect in Austin these days, so no complaints, just observations. The ambiance is dim lighting and just louddd conversations. I'm not sure if it's cause the restaurant isn't super big, but you can't even talk to someone across of you. 5/5 for the food- the mozzarella sticks are the best I've ever had. My husband didn't want to order them because he said he's never had a good mozzarella stick before and thinks he doesn't like them. He gobbled these down and wanted more! We've tried a few pastas and they were all great. The eggplant Parmesan was super tasty- their red sauce is spot-on real deal Italian and I loved it! 3.5/5 for service as we've had mixed experiences here. The first time we arrived 5 minutes prior to 5pm opening and we're told there are no tables available so we are at the bar. The bartender was super gruff and seemed miserable to be there. He kept trying to take away our plates while we were still actively eating (like we're actively chewing and there more left on the plate). He then ignored us and the other patrons the rest of the night. We went another time and got a table which was nice, but noticed the waitstaff was still weird about trying to clear plates while we are still eating. Service was better at the table than the bar. Ambiance- 3/5. The lighting and tables are all very nice, but even for an early 5pm dinner the place is incredibly loud- I was seated across from my husband and we had a hard time hearing each other over the din of other diners. The noise level is just way too high here. Food was fantastic, bar service left a lot to be desired and ambiance is nice but could be improved. read more

We decided to try Sammie's for my husbands birthday dinner. I have to say that absolutely everything was wonderful. Dustin was our waiter, and he was incredible. From the food recommendations to the wine he helped us select. He was friendly and we felt very at home. We would come back here just for him honestly. On top of that the food was so good. Really unfortunate that this place was not good. My friends and I, a group of three, all got food poisoning we believe from the meatballs. The vodka pasta doesn't say on the menu, but it comes with so many stringy onions that you can't even enjoy the meal. My friend and I both did not eat the pasta because there was just so many onions. We all three woke up about seven hours after we ate with sickness to our stomachs, vomiting and other things. If it didn't there literally are no reservations at dinner time until 6 weeks out. The food was delicious so I'm glad we didn't wait until then. I have been waiting to try this place and finally got to try it last night! There were no reservations available but we walked in and were able to get seated behind the bar seating. Usually, they do not allow for guests to order dinner there, instead would have to order at the bar, but the service was excellent and they took our order and treated us like any other guests sitting at the reserved tables. I got the virgin aperol spritz to drink, it was refreshing but sweet; a little bit too sweet for my taste. I love focaccia bread but was disappointed in this one because it was cold. I wish they had warmed them up. The mozzarella sticks (5 pieces), always remind me of my childhood days; I loved them, come with the arrabbiata and garlic ranch. The perfect crisp, flavorful breading, and stringy mozzarella cheese dipped in the two sauces made them to die for. The lumache alla vodka came with ricotta and sesame garlic breadcrumbs. The quantity was perfect for one person (both my friend and I finished our plates). The al dente pasta, to the creamy spicy sauce and the crunch from the sesame breadcrumbs made it a perfect dish to end the night with. One of my favorite American style Italian restaurants! If you don't have a reservation you can still sit at the bar if any open seats are available. The bar is small but very inviting and spaced out seats. The service is top notch, the services are knowledgeable and I love the recommendations they add. We sat at the bar - and our server was kind and attentive - guiding us well to some of the standout dishes. We split the Shrimp Francese, which is not to be missed - the lemon butter and perfectly cooked shrimp were the perfect started. The apple and pear salad along with shaved fennel, lemon vinaigrette and parmigiano was also fresh and tasty.
