Hidden gem alert. I don't know how I never knew about this place but I found it recently and I'm glad I did. Old school lunch counter vibes with a limited menu of a few things that they do really well, the burger being the main attraction. Pro tip on that burger: don't order a double. It's too big. The single burger is a substantial portion and will do the job of filling you up no matter how hungry you are. Plenty of indoor seating, private parking lot, near the airport, and the place is run by an older couple who have apparently been in business here for decades, perfecting the art of burger making. If you're doing a tour of local burger joints or you're near the airport looking for some real food, this place needs to be on your radar. Don't be hungry in this area and pass it by. read more

A quick Yelp search located this gem of a restaurant. Just a 3 minute drive after leaving the BHM airport, straight ahead on the left. Not to appealing from the outside, or the inside, but the food was very good. I sat at the counter and watched everything being cooked. From what I read, they are known for their burgers, and I watched about 20 be served while I was there. I had the steak rider and fries. It was a steak sandwich served with onions, peppers, tomatoes, lettuce in a pita and topped with a sauce that is delicious. My first stop when traveling to Birmingham. read more

When you Google best burgers in Alabama this place normally comes up on all the list. After trying it out I can definitely see why. This is an old school cafe with an old school greasy spoon hamburger. Got mine all the way and it was delicious. Burger came with everything except Mayo, mustard, or ketchup. Once taking a bite I could see why they didn't want to mess up the taste with additional condiments. It was absolutely delicious and very tasty as served. The food grill food is cooked to order and you get plenty of it. Be prepared to sit back and enjoy the ambiance and chitchat between patrons and family. They recently stopped serving breakfast but their lunch (10-3) is worth a visit. Somewhat small with Dad, Momma and son working but no more are needed. I love their Greek ancestry and found out that Sammy's name was Dad's father's name. What a rich history. All the food is great. Momma and Dad are slowing down so you need to visit sooner rather than later. As I understand, the son will not continue in the restaurant. The restroom is small but functional. Solid beef rider sandwich in a pita wrap. Anything is better covered with ranch! But the sandwich itself would have been good even if it had not been covered with ranch. The beef, peppers, and onions were all freshly grilled. The southern style green beans were decent too. As I ate my meal, I was eyeing the burger on Texas toast that was currently on the grill. So I'm familiar with this area but never knew this sandwich shop existed. Wow! I officially found out about this jewel via Yelp! Yelp is amazing for discovering these types of unique places! I arrived and didn't know how to order but the owners were very helpful and guided me throughout the process. The time I was there wasn't crowded so I was able to take my time ordering and sat wherever I wanted to! I ordered the hamburger with bacon and no mayo- lettuce, tomato, grilled onions where the toppings available. I really loved how the ground beef was fresh and clearly a hand made patty . Grilled on the flat top to perfection! A well crafted burger!! The fries were average but nothing special. Personally, they were slightly overcooked to me but I did love the season salt they topped them off with! Next visit , I hope to try the roasted potatoes. On pictures , they look delish! Unbelievable. I've been here a hand full of times. Always stick the the same. cheeseburger on Texas toast with bacon and fries, they put lettuce tomato and cheese with a combo of fried onions and peppers. Never disappoints! Always the same. Absolutely love this place. Family owned and operated. The daddy is always on the grill. I've had the rider's too, which is basically, steak, ground beef or chicken stuffed in a pita pouch with lettuce and tomato with a delicious house thousand island. I've lived over here near Sammy's for about 25 years. Sad to admit this but this is my first time eating here. I've been missing quite a treat, if I must say so myself. I was in the mood for a great cheeseburger and had heard this was one of the places to get one. Everything was quite fresh, and the burger was hand patted and seasoned as it was cooked. For an extra $2.25, I decided to get my bacon fix on. That brought my sandwich total up to about $7.50. The fries and the drink, (though I opted for water ) are an additional charge. This is definitely a splurge if you're on a budget, but it's well worth it. The burger was juicy, and the lettuce crisp. The onions were lightly grilled and the bun toasted just right. The burger could've been seasoned a tad bit more in my opinion, but it was still pretty tasty. The only downside, if I had to pick one, is that they close at 3:30. Which means during the regular school year, since I'm an educator, I won't be able to stop by until breaks such as in the summer or Christmas. Bummer. If you're looking for a great, home-made, old fashioned cheeseburger, this is definitely a spot to check out. Be prepared to pay a little extra for it. We bypassed downtown and found this amazing little burger joint on the edge of town on our way to Knoxville from Texas and let me tell you it is well worth the try! One of the most amazing filling cheeseburgers I've ever had and a price you can't find anywhere else. It will definately be a staple stopping spot on our roadtrips. This is a hidden gem East of Birmingham proper. If you are headed to the airport it's a great little stop to or from. We stopped in and ordered 4 cheeseburgers for 4 people. These were fine cheeseburgers. My mouth is watering just thinking about them again while writing this. The staff was friendly and took our orders and quickly got to work. Within a short time our burgers and fries showed up to the table with the appropriate toppings for each person. The great thing about this place is the price. It's not too expensive. Sometimes I forget about Sammy's as a) I'm rarely around that part of Messer Airport Hwy unless rushing to the airport and 2) in the far past they did not accept any plastic payment. I dropped off some boxes at the nice newish recycling center today and decided to drive a little further for a burger since it was apparently fate that I was in that area and had $10 in cash on me. Well, it turns out they take Visa/MC now (no Amex) but do charge the 4% cc fee back. No big deal for a very good burger and fries which I ended up ordering too as otherwise I would have had to skip the fries or tip. A cheeseburger prepared to order with grilled onions fries and a water set me back $10 plus tip on the old plastic payment option. I will upload a pic of my burger but this is a very fine burger cooked on a grill that has seen a lot of meat and love over the years. I still have yet to try their wraps (ie the "riders" as they call them). Great family operation that has been around for a long time and which deserves continued support. read more

It's 70 year old married couple and their son running a high end sandwich shop with all high quality ingredients and a more than fair price. The beef or chicken "riders" are in pita pockets and to die for. Their cheeseburgers have won awards and are as good as they come. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND EAT HERE OFTEN!!
