Sampan just hits the spot. I tend to like to add on to flavor and control the soy/sodium so the flavoring that Sampan provides is perfect for me. I survived eating their chicken and broccoli with white rice throughout high school. I recently had the chicken and broccoli with fried rice. I love this family owned business. They are truly incredible and have withheld their quality after all these years. I love visiting and having lunch here every time I'm back in NY. Staff is kind and they remember me every time I'm back. The food is amazing and the service is stellar. I first came here when I was in high school. This place was a safe haven for me back then. I'd come here with friends, bring school work here to complete while I ate, and I'd sit alone, having nice meal while listening to my favorite podcasts. Great memories. Revisiting this place as an adult, the food is just as delicious as I remember. The chicken wings with shrimp fried rice and sweet & sour chicken are my favorite dishes. Ordered broccoli garlic sauce with plain fried rice and a coke. Came to $9.25. Little expensive considering it's only rice and broccoli. I thought maybe the portion will be big. The portions was the smallest I ever recieved at a Chinese restaurant. The food came in a small plate with very little food considering I paid $9.25. The food itself took a while to come about 15 minutes and I was the only customer. As for the food itself. Not very good. Rice was soft and overcooked and the broccoli was drenched in garlic sauce that didint taste good. Sauce was too sweet no flavor. Overall I won't be returning. read more

This 4star rating comes with a disclaimer - the 4 stars are for the fried chicken wings alone. Yes, the plain fried chicken wings - not the sesame or buffalo or bbq wings in the appetizer section when ordering from SeamlessWeb. I tried that first and was disgusted by the thick breading, weird sauce, and general icky. My friend had told me that the chicken wings were great, but having mistakenly tried the sesame wings, I thought she was crazy. But then I discovered she meant the plain fried chicken wings- the ones that only come with 4 wings for $3.95. I'm not sure how Sampan can have great (plain) fried chicken wings (not too thick breading, not super greasy, crispy and well cooked) but such gross sesame/buffalo/bbq wings. But whatever, I'm happy now with the fried chicken wings (#S2 if you order via SeamlessWeb) and those get 4 stars. As for the rest of the food? A solid 2 to 3 star. Not very flavorful but nothing disgusting. This place made me LOVE Chinese food! I am a very picky eater, so it takes a lot to impress me.. and honestly, I am not fond of most Chinese food restaurants in Queens. I've never understood why some people "loved" Chinese food. To me, most Chinese places served unmarinated chicken that still had the "raw" smell to it, super oily and burnt egg rolls, and turned leftover meats and rice into salty- soy sauce drenched fried rice. But this place gave me hope for Chinese food! I have eaten in the restaurant and ordered takeout. The sesame chicken from this place is AMAZING!! I always order it spicy and I love how the chicken has a fresh crisp to it.. it tastes as if they just freshly made it... unlike other Chinese places, where the sesame chicken taste "squishy"... yuck, I know.. lol.. but back to what I was saying... this place makes their sesame chicken perfectly! I always order the house special, which is slightly larger than the lunch special. It comes with soup, a bowl of those long skinny crackers for the soup, and pork fried rice. I've had them twice. The first experience was the same as any other Chinese food I've had - okay at best. The second time I had them, was probably the worst Chinese experience I've ever had. I got the most basic combo meal ever, Broccoli and Chicken. The Chicken was well under cooked and the broccoli tasted like it was cleaned with dish washing soap, seriously...I could not finish half the meal. The egg roll was the greasiest thing I've ever touched. The thing that scares me about this place is that they weren't even busy when they cooked this food...I'm petrified to go back, when I pass by I loose any appetite I might of had. A little food for thought (no pun intended) that meal gave me a horrific stomach and headache. I really like Sampan. I typically order their sesame tofu and a spring roll, and am almost always happy. The service is always quick, affordable, and the portions can last you for days. A small tofu dish, which is under $4, is larger than a dinner portion and can be shared between 3 people, easily. Without a doubt, this is tops on my list of places to get Chinese food delivered in Astoria. They are one step away taking the number eight position and replacing my Aunt Becky on speed dial. When I moved to the neighborhood, I tried several Chinese Restauraunts I dialed here; I dialed there. Dumplings from one place; Noodles from another. It wasn't until I came across Sam Pan that I found my Shangri-La. While the menu is nothing fancy (few surprises) and fits the relatively standard mold the food is a notch higher than other local places. The Orange Chicken. Crab Rangoon, General Wonton Soup and Broccoli with Bean Curd fried are all reliable favorites). Never over cooked or over sauced. The staff is polite and friendly on the phone. Quick delivery just about every time, And the price is even a touch cheaper than other places. As often found with similar places, $15 gets you some free soup or two liter of soda. Bottom line: Consistent quality. That my friend is what General Tso himself would want in a good Chinese restaurant. To be fair, I've only eaten in the actual restaurant once, the other 99% of my experiences have been delivery. Nevertheless, I've yet to find a better Chinese place in Western Queens. read more

One of the better Chinese take-outs I've been two. Close enough to walk to from my apartment, and they deliver, which is always a plus. Probably one of the better General Tso's Chickens that I've ordered, always hot and delicious. I guess there is or was a "sanpan" (notice the 'n' not 'm' in the name) on 21st ave and 20th st and I got mixed up when I searched for it on yelp. Anyway, I deleted that review and now am going to type it here: Good Chinese food was hard to find in Astoria when I first moved here, but maybe I just didn't know where to look. I tried a few places throughout the year and nothing really impressed me. But then my girlfriend introduced me to Sampan (with the 'm' not the 'n' lol) and eversince it has been one of my favorite places to fill my weekly Chinese food fix. Everything I have had so far has been pretty good, and I have had no complaints. One good thing about this place that impressed me was that they have good tofu dishes. My girlfriend is a vegetarian and I usually don't care for various tofu dishes she gets at various restaurants. but this place makes a mean General Tsao's Tofu. I always sneak a bite when she doesn't look :) If you're new to the area and want some good Chinese food, i would start here. read more
