Stopped here on a whim and there was no wait. Cute ambiance, great service and some of the dish ware they use is so authentic. Beware the food is very SPICY! Even if you ask for mild. If you don't do spicy, let them know in advance and thank me later. Also, don't you dare skip dessert here because the Mango Sticky Rice is the BEST! I've never had a tastier mango. Took my sister out for a delayed birthday celebration. I read a lot about this restaurant and I think this is one of the best Thai restaurants in DC when it comes to freshness of food and hospitality. We had a great time. We started off with Mekong Sour and Hello 911, I'm on Fire. The drinks were delicious but the Hello 911 stole the show. It was not too spicy in my opinion but packed a ton of flavor. We started with the spring rolls and sampannee wings. The wings were so good we had to get another. I would have gotten another to be honest. For the main course we got the spicy basil fried rice (with beef) and the fried fish. I really want to emphasize the freshness of the food. My sister has been to Thailand before and she kept raving about the similarities in food quality. One of our host (Ratta) did a great job sharing great energy with us and making the experience enjoyable. This is definitely on my list of good restaurants in DC. I highly recommend. read more

This is a small but warm and homey place with unique and interesting decoration. The service is good. Waiters/waitresses greet customers with smiles. I tried Pad Thai, the most basic Thai food. It is made to order so it smells good and fresh. It is a little bit different from the Pad Thai I tried before, as it doesn't have peanuts. But overall it is good. The mango sticky rice has a surprisingly beautiful presentation as the mango strips are arranged as an awesome flower. Been searching for my go to thai restaurant in the DMV area and unfortunately, this one isn't making the cut. I only tried two items - the thai basil fried rice with chicken and the gyoza, but neither impressed me. The rice wasn't cooked thoroughly which left some hard pieces in it. The menu stated the gyoza would be pan fried, but it seemed deep fried. I would rate the rice pretty average like a 7/10 and the overall restaurant the same. I was craving a late night snack and saw that this place was on Ubereats and was so excited to see they had mango sticky rice! I have been searching high and low for a GOOD mango sticky rice in the DC/ MD area for months and lo and behold, this place has one of the best I have had so far! The ordering on uber eats was easy and it showed up to my door 45 mins later. I don't live in DC so 45 mins for a DC delivery was pretty fast. I would stay away from the $29 creamy tom yum prawns due to the price. They give you three tiny prawns the rest is tomatoes and mushrooms. $19 for stewed pork with mostly rice in dish is crazy. This is a very popular Thai restaurant, and it is a must go one. Great food and extraordinary friendly services. The inside decorations are warmly decorated which make you feel like dining inside a flowery garden. Even the serving plates and bowls are carefully selected. Food is delicious, but halfway through my meal I lost my appetite. I was looking through the window into their kitchen and one of the kitchen help, whose job was to pack the rice into takeout boxes, keep using his fingers each each packed box of rice to place rice in his mouth. Then he would use the same hand to scoop the rice again. The worst part was he caught me looking at him, looked at me a couple of times while he did it, and continued to do it. It ruined an otherwise decent meal. Our main server who was a man in his 40s was very nice. The food was delicious despite being very small in portion size. The vibe and service of Sampannee is one of the best I've experienced in DC. It feels cozy and encourages you to stay longer, this feeling is then intensified by the friendliness of the staff. My friends and I were struggling to order and delayed the staff many times; however, they were always eager to help us make decisions and did not seem annoyed to come back. The food is phenomenal! Truly some of the best food I have had in this city. The Thai Basil Fried Rice had the perfect level of spice and flavor. I absolutely love the ambience and the amazing service at Sampannee. I was fortunate enough to make it there for happy hour, which has some wonderful options. I tried the fried tofu which was absolutely delicious. I love that. It came out with a sauce, but literally can eat this by itself. For my main dish, I had the red curry, which was Divine. We were walking on P Street near DuPont Circle. The restaurant where we had wanted to eat is closed for the holiday. A manager from a different restaurant suggested Sampannee. The bottom line is that this is a good, certainly not great Thai restaurant. The food is absolutely fresh and made to order. And it is very good quality. I chose the Tom Yum soup with tofu. The flavorings of Tom Yum are obviously similar from place to place with some interesting variations. This soup was very good, served medium spicy, and at the right temperature. The tofu were superbly lightly fried and the veges were good as well. The serving size was right on. We chose a Spring Roll and Undercover Shrimp roll. Both were lightly fried and not greasy, that can be an issue at times. The Shrimp choice was much better than the Spring roll but they were both good. My wife chose the Roasted Duck curry which she enjoyed very much. The sauce that accompanied the duck looked like a red curry. Our server suggested the Green curry; my protein again was tofu. This was also flavorful and quite tasty. Unfortunately, our service was not really good. Evidently there was at least one new staff person and our specific requests for extra plates was not fulfilled. The price is very reasonable. The ambience is very relaxed with lots of pillows along the benches. Clearly come as you are, though the restaurant appears extremely clean. So there you have it. A good but certainly not great Thai restaurant. There are better choices in DC. read more

Ordered takeout on a cold rainy day. The order was ready in about 20 minutes and pick-up was super smooth. I really appreciate how they packaged the Khao Soi, soup, noodles, and fried noodles separately so nothing got soggy. The soup base was amazing - rich coconutty flavor, slightly sweet, very fragrant - everything you'd want to warm up your body. It came with two chicken legs, which were cooked to perfection and super tender. The only thing I was missing was some pickled collard greens to add some tang and even more texture. The papaya salad was also delicious but nothing too special. Really happy to have a really good, authentic-tasting Thai food in this area that does Khao Soi well. Could not recommend this place more. I've been here three times in the last two weeks and I still cannot get enough of it. My favorite by far is the pad thai and jumbo crabmeat fried rice. Everything is so fresh and flavorful - you really can't go wrong with the food. Thai tea is a classic. I visited Sampannee as a treat after concluding my ministry for the day. The Ambiance is really nice, you can take a selfie in front of their signage! The staff was attentive and helpful with the menu. I got the Pad Thai Tom Yum, didn't care much for the thick noodles, however, it was still very good. Next time I'll just get the regular noodles. The Mocktail menu reads so well and flavorful that it was hard to choose; however, when we did, the drinks were bland :( We even gave it a second chance and it was still bland! For example: I ordered a lychee storm mixed drink (lychee, peach, lemon, soda) and all I can taste was watered down soda water- thanks to the ice. No fruit profile stood out whatsoever (and yes, I stirred my drink well). I've been to many Thai food places around Dupont. This week, I tried three different places. This is the best one so far! I'd say other places have great video ads that attracted me to visit, but I ended up disappointed with the food and service. I'm glad I decided to try Sampannee based on real reviews. The hero dishes are the Pad Thai and Duck Curry. Simple dishes, but they hit differently. I also loved the presentation of the whole Gai Yang (grilled chicken). It's big enough for two people to share. Great job by the servers as well. I went there with my family, and they helped take care of the kids. When my kids made a mess, they came to assist and cleaned up for us. I'm not a regular reviewer, but I just wanted to express my gratitude. My family and I really appreciated what they did.
