Just moved to the area and was looking for a reputable mechanic that can service my 650CI. Was referred to Sam's by a neighbor and couldn't be happier. Very professional, thorough, and most important HONEST! Mechanics and honesty are terms typically not used in the same sentence. I was very pleased with the level of service and knowledge they have. If you want the job to get done the first time you go to the experts. I believe those experts to be the fine people at Sam's. Most recently I had an issue with my convertible top not closing. After a few days in the shop I was sure the bill would be over $1k. To my surprise they charged me $0. The issue took them less than an hour to complete so they were kind enough not only to nix charge but also show me how to fix the issue (it's common in these types of cars) myself. I have been going to Sam for years and so have many of my friends. We go to see Sam, Sonya, the cats as well as the great staff because they take care of our cars and are more or less.....family. It all started with us and a 1992 BMW 325ic, when were were at the beach, knew nothing about the BMW brand, and had a fuel pump go out. After a nice tow ride from the beach, Sam checked 1 thing, then another thing and finally hit the back of the quarter panel with his hand, where the fuel pump was located, and then said, see if you can start it. Voila, it started up, a bad fuel pump. That is my favorite story with them, and I will never go anywhere else for BMW service. If you have a BMW, service is expensive, you really want to make sure you can take a vehicle to Sam and have him look it over before you buy it. He also can educate you on the latest issues with a BMW and tell you the good engines and other problems with engines. They have expanded the waiting area and now have water, coffee and in the 21st century, a TV in a comfortable waiting area. I went in today to have them install two tires I purchased from Tire Rack and had shipped to them for installation. After all, I can get them to look over the car at the same time they are installing the tires and let me know if the car needs anything else. I highly recommend Sam's Automotive, especially if you own a BMW vehicle. read more

Bought a new car and had almost instant issues. Took it to a BMW dealership and they quoted me full replacement of $5000 transfer case and all this other stuff. Took it to Sams automotive for second opinion. His knowledge and honest guidance told me I don't really need a transfer case right now just do a service on it for fluids. So, earlier this year I decided to redo the interior on my 1984 e23. i just had it repainted and was really excited about finishing the car up. I pulled the seats, the carpet, everything. Once I realized this project was more than I could handle I decided to take the car to an interior shop to finish. I start the car and put it in gear and the car goes nowhere. The car rev's and begins to slowly move and finally it catches in 3rd gear. "Whoa! This blows! My transmission is out" I say to myself. As I sit contemplating the $2500 or so dollars I am about to shell out I realize what a strange coincidence it is that before I pulled out my interior the car was fine and now this problem has arisen. "Must be something I did" I think and proceed to hit the e23 forums (I will admit, I did drive the car 5 miles to the interior shop in 3rd gear). Everyone on the forums seemed to be in agreement that the problem must be electrical in nature and for the most part doubted it was transmission failure. "Sweet", I was relieved. Once the interior was done about 2 weeks later I drove the car another 3 miles, in third gear, to Sam's automotive. The local indie BMW shop I had been using for about 15 years. Once at Sam's, I relayed my story to two separate mechanics and they couldn't care less what i had to say. They both agreed that the transmission was, in their words, "toast". I pleaded with them that I had discussed this with a few e23 enthusiasts from across the country and would they check everything before making that assessment but one mechanic drove the car, I swear, 5 feet, hopped out and declared once more that the transmission was "toast". At this point I should have got a second opinion but I had been using this shop for years and I trusted them. Anyway, a week or so goes by and I get a call from Sam himself asking if I had any electrical schematics for the car as the transmission was rebuilt but the car was still doing the same thing as when I brought it in, only getting 3rd and reverse gears. This is where it gets a little shaky. I ask Sam, "so, did my transmission not need to be rebuilt as it still has the same problem?", his reply "oh no, you burned that transmission up driving it here, it needed to be rebuilt". "Strange" I thought, "if it's still having the same issues, why did the transmission need to be rebuilt in the first place? Did they even rebuild the transmission to begin with? If it's still suffering from the same issues as a burned out transmission would display, did THEY burn it up again?". Needless to say I got the diagrams through a member of the Bimmerboard e23 forum and $2300 later I get my car back. Now, I am a reasonable person. I am well aware that at some point the car would need a new transmission but why couldn't they just be honest, admit to their mistake in their original diagnosis and just discuss it with me? I would have at least paid some money, hell, I would have met them half way and maybe they could have given me some credit towards some future repairs down the road. I guess I am to blame, I trusted Sam's and why not? I had been going to them ever since I got my first 84 e28 some 15 years earlier. I sent all of my friends to them as well. It's not about the money, all I want is for a mechanic to respect my car the same way that I do. Is that too much to ask? read more
