Sam Smog is a honest shop for smog check. It is very busy place. Price is reasonable. But service is fast.

In 15 minutes you're done. Easy peasy. A little expensive but gets the job done, if you're waiting, no available parking.

He was very professional. My car was not your average car that he test on a daily basis. I have a classic 1984 Alfa Romeo. This we required him to re calibrate the equipment which took 20 minutes. He ask me to drive the car for the 20 minutes to get the CAT really hot. As the car was coming to the end of the testing, the computer flashed pass. Sam crack a big smile and said your car passed! Dishonest. Charged me additional $20 for "removing my cover to inspect vacuum lines". I called him out on it and after a back and forth got it removed. He then quickly took my card and charged it with an additional $10 of purposely bad math. He smiled at me with the sheepish smile of a cute old man. Its become increasingly difficult to find any business especially for smog in the bayarea that is both professional and courteous. They are open Monday-Saturday, appointments are highly recommended. Saturdays are the only day i have time so this was a plus, however they do get busy so plan ahead. The owner was knowledgeable, patient, and understanding to my specific situation. I didnt feel rushed/unwelcomed as i did in other places. Everything was explained to me during the process and he even helped direct traffic so i had an easier time backing out into the busy street. 1. Basically $90 for a smog 2. I didn't pay anything for a smog. I just asked him if there is anything that would prevent me from not passing. 3. He tested my car and failed it without me knowing. I went to a different smog place the next day and it passed easily. 4. I feel like that was dishonest on his end and I won't be going back there again. read more

I have been using Sam's smog since 2001 and there is a reason why I keep going to Sam even though the price might have gone up but all prices for everything is up due to cost of living, Sam does not gouge on pricing, pay up or you can go smog your car at dealership for double or triple the cost. read more

Went here to get a smog. Kept asking about the price upfront and the guy mumbles and Dances around the issue with limited English. I should've just left. At the end of it he says it's $100 which is about three times as much as everybody else. I told him I wasn't paying that much and he cut it in half. Still haven't heard from the DMV two months later. After paying almost ninety dollars for a smog certificate and three retests at thirty each without passing I went down the block to another test station. After failing the third time I contacted the Toyota dealer I bought my Tacoma truck from to find out the problem. I expressed my dismay that my five year old truck with only 50 thousand miles on it could not pass a smog test. I then learned that I did not receive notification of a recall for a faulty catalytic converter. Returning to sam's with a replacement converter installed for another thirty dollar retest that also failed I went to a new test station. Sam's declaration that his learning of this recall would help future Tacoma customers was of no consolation. My teaching Sam this information cost me almost two hundred dollars with no certificate. Competitor of Sam's cost sixty dollars including needed smog certificate. read more

Very expensive. Non transparent about added costs. $110.00 for tests Told me to return the next day because I didn't pass. I returned the next day as he told me. He took my vehicle and retested and I passed. I thought that retest fee was included as he never told me otherwise. First Smogging was already above average at $70.00. I had been a return customer. I needed to get my car smogged to renew my tags but it had to be done at a Star Certified station. I thought it would be quite difficult but I came across Sam's Smog shop. They made the process so quick and easy for me. I was able to get the car done and received my tags the same day at AAA. Definitely coming back here when its that time again. read more

Got my smog test here second year in a row. Don't understand why some people are complaining about prices. If your car fails the smog test, that's your problem. If he did the work, you need to pay up and $29.95 for a retest is reasonable. The prices are posted on the wall so if you didn't read the signs, then you're just silly. So what if he doesn't speak perfect English? He understands english and can do the job. Quit being so angry and ugly! There is no such thing as a cheap Smog Test. It's a Smog Test that is registered with the DMV online immediately right there in the shop. I will definitely go back next year. It's quick and conveniently located. Went here a while back because I was looking for a place to get my car smogged quick. Sam's was right on it, and got my car done while I waited. The place was really small, and I had to wait for him to finish working on another car, but after a quick walk to the gas station shop nearby to get a drink, and Sam was underway. Ethically challenged -- I will not go here again. I stopped in for a smog check. He quoted $59.95 and I said, "That's expensive. Other places charge $45 MAXIMUM." (I didn't mention that $45 INCLUDES the smog certificate. At that price, only an inexperienced motorist wouldn't know that.) He quickly dropped the price to $49.95 and I agreed (saving an additional couple of dollars was not worth haggling over). He performed the service right away and I bided my time reading one of the many outdated magazines in the waiting room. When it came time to pay he wrote $49.95 and then ADDED another $8.25 for the certificate, bringing the total back up to $58.20. That my friends, does NOT fly with me. I immediately protested and he reduced it to $50.00 (I'm no math wizard, but even that is still more than the agreed upon $49.95). I accepted and proferred my credit card to which he requested that I pay cash. I told him I have only my card. He gave a sigh and charged it. He is NOT AN ETHICAL OPERATOR, in my opinion. My policy is to write reviews for positive service and no review for disappointing service (because I don't want to penalize the business for a possibly off day by one employee). But UNETHICAL/CUNNING businesses need to be called out. Everyone is entitled to make a fair income, but I expect that once a deal is struck you stick by your word. A deal is a deal. His attempt to wring a few more dollars out of someone who already expressed concern about the price was a stupid, greedy mistake that cost him my future business and a negative review. I don't expect him to change but at least I can warn my fellow Yelpers. read more

I took my car to get smogged at Sam's Smog shop and the service was quick and friendly. After waiting for about 10 minutes for him to finish up with another car, he took mine in. The testing on my car was completed within about 20 minutes. Sam was very cordial and appreciative of my business. I will definitely come back when I need another smog test. read more

i am 'old school' and believe in this train of thought... and love to do business with 'salt of the earth' business owners, that take the time, and DO THE WORK, for you, as a customer. Sam is one of those people, he may not SPEAK perfect English, but he sure does understand it. My car had a simple GAS CAP issue, of which another garage tried to up-sell me into a new gas tank. Needed to get a same day smog at 5p! This was the only place I could find that was open late and had time to actually do it. It's super expensive but the guy is very nice and even offered to stay later for me to get there after work! Nice place to go of urgently needed but in the future I won't wait until last minute to smog my car and research for a local place that is waaayyyyyy cheaper. read more

This place is a ripoff! I went there because the guy quoted me $59 total unfortunately my car didn't pass the first time for some odd reason so the guy told me I need to drive my car at least 70 miles so it will register on top of that he than tells me re-smog is another $29.95 didn't even mentioned the certificate is additional $8.95! Wtf! So my car passed which didn't surprise me and I ended spending about $100 I can't believe any of the 4 star he got on yelp! Not to mention he told me most places charge $80. I highly recommend no one ever go there and take your chance. How is it that frist my car didn't pass than the second time it passed with out any adjustments? I call him a slick thief! read more

Been going to this guy for 8 years with 2 cars. He does a great job. I suspect the bad posts are just competitors trying to talk him down.

His garage is rather tiny, and you have to shimmy your car along the sidewalk to get to it... but Sam was fast, got my smog check done for $49.95 + $8.25 (certification) + $0.80 (dmv sending fee) in under 20 minutes. I suspect if I haggled I could have gotten a bigger discount, but hey, 49.95 is already pretty competitive. read more

AVOID!!! Took a brand new Shelby Mustang there and the proprietor claimed that the intake was aftermarket when it had just been delivered to me from the factory out of state and the car was 50 state legal (had sticker on hood). Pictures from the internet and owner's manual did not convince him otherwise and he made no effort to learn or understand what a simple 30 second google search could verify. Maybe some prior customers seemed satisfied here and the guy seemed nice, but personally wouldn't trust someone with any of my vehicles when they were so wrong on something so simple. Took the car down the street at the Union 76 station on El Camino and Murchison and they ran the test just like they're supposed to (as required by CARB). Too bad as the tire shop next door is first-rate. read more

A friend recommended me to come to this location to get a Smog Check, saying that he is a honest person and it was a really good location to stroll around while you wait. When I got there, Sam greeted me and was very nice. Although his English wasn't very fluent, he was very friendly. You can tell he's running a honest and genuine business. I strolled around Burlingame Ave, a very nice area got some coffee to pass the time. When I got my back, my car was ready. Will definitely be coming back again in two years! read more

I'm so disappointed. I chose this station because I read bad Yelp reviews about other places, I should have done my homework a little more thoroughly. I got there and Sam was very nice and told me he would have my car ready on 20 minutes. He called and said it was finished. When I went to pay I noticed the slip said $69 + $8 for the certificate. What? I know most places charge about $40. I asked about the price and he quickly said "oh, I will give you the coupon price $49" - then charged me $49 + $10 ($59!!) for the certificate. I told him I had seen the price was $29 and $8 for the certificate, he said "not at my shop." The high price aside, he was obviously trying to rip me off by trying to charge me over $70 and hoping I wouldn't question it. Sam's is inexpensive and he gets the job done fast...if you live in Burlingame or nearby, a good option to get the smog test done.

This place is terrible. I have a car that has no mechanical problems and it failed the smog emission test twice. However, I wasn't convinced that the car had problems and so I called my friend who knows a lot about cars and he recommended the 76 Smog Test Only Center in Belmont. The guy there was incredibly professional and gave the car a good look-over and told me he didnt understand why it didn't pass. He made sure the engine was nice and warm and my smog test passed with flying colors. The guy there told me that places that charge a second time for a second test are usually red herrings for people who purposely let cars fail the smog because they can then charge them a second time. I went back to Sam's Smog Shop and confronted him about his poor service and he was very defensive (almost like this wasn't the first time that someone had come to him with this accusation.) I asked for my $100 back and he wouldn't budge. He told me that he considers something like warming up the engine a repair and that he doesn't do repairs. Anyhow, Sam's Smog place is complete garbage and will take your money. I definitely recommend the 76 Smog Center on 699 Ralston Ave in Belmont. read more
