Stopped by this place during a roadtrip and everything was amazing. The service was great. We were immediately greeted and guided towards the menus. Spots are tight and limited Ambiance: Simple and casual, nothing fancy Seating: A few tables/booths inside with two more tables outside Menu: 1/2 foot, ¾ foot, 2 feet subs. They have about 30 cold, hot, and vegetarian combinations. Customizations are decent, you can choose your preferred bread (white, wheat, lettuce wrap, spinach tortilla) and cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, Swiss, American, provolone). They also sell add-ons like avocado, extra meat, extra cheese, drinks, and sides. Extra long sandwiches (4-6 feet) require advance notice. Food: I usually order Avocado, Turkey, Cheese on white. Each sandwich comes with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. Black pepper, mustard and mayonnaise add much needed flavor. Very generous with the slabs of turkey meat. Avocado amount is adequate, and the provolone is tasty. Price: Average. They aren't immune to inflation, I remember a medium sub was $7.25 for many years prior to March 2020. Now it's $11.75 today! For me it's still somewhat reasonable because half a sandwich is enough for a light lunch and I can eat the other later. But what was the worst was the turkey lunchmeat, they must take lunchmeat literally, as it was definitely not turkey breast. Call it opaque, glistening, and non meat like, threw that part out and ate only the lettuce, tomato slice, and big fat roll of carbohydrate. The final insult to my culinary experience, NO napkins included in our order. I'm not a caveman and found it difficult to eat this mess of a sandwich. I decided on this spot after reading Yelp reviews. I have traveled by many times, but never stopped in. Excellent service from the gentleman who appeared to be the proprietor. A small but serviceable dining area (TO GO is in the name). I chose to dine in for a better service impression. Other than a gentleman watching a sporting event, I was the first guest for the first half of my sandwich (more later). Then, some obvious return guests (from the banter) trickled in, and two people picking up a large pre-order. The host (I will call him) was extremely personable and appropriate with all guests, and even rattled off specific order requirements of regulars in advance (no tomatoes ever, for example). I intentionally use the word guest instead of customer - that is how I, and everyone else, seemed to feel. I ordered the BBQ beef 9" sandwich on white. The roll was lightly toasted, the sandwich was well portioned and very tasty, with a very nice sauce. Four stars because shredded beef would have been a nice upgrade over sliced, and because YOU READER were not here giving this service-oriented provider your business!! Get down here! read more

I've been searching for a good Italian sub in Santa Barbara for a while and Sam's on the Mesa brings it (I can't vouch for the other locations.because I haven't been there). Sam's on Meigs has a good roll, lots of the meat one wants on a sub, the right amount of mustard, mayonnaise and Italian dressing and good provolone. This was my first time so I didn't know to ask for more pepperocinninis and maybe you don't want more but, in any event, it's the kind of place where I don't doubt Sam will lay them on on. Sam's makes great sandwiches. The keys are their fresh baked bread and their hearty servings of meats and cheeses. Personally I favor the Italian, but you really can't go wrong. I get my 7 year-old the turkey and cheese, and she eats for a week. The prices are very reasonable and the service is always on point. It's pretty much THE place to get a sandwich on the Mesa. That said, you'll want to get your sandwiches to go, as the decor is utilitarian. But that isn't a problem - Shoreline Park is gorgeous and a 2 minute car ride away. This is my favorite Sam's To Go location because of it's originality and the vibe Sam himself brings to the shop is so pleasantly irreplaceable. If you've ever been to any one of these sandwich shops you know what I mean when I say there subs are the freshest in the business. All ingredients burst with flavor, meats are well packed on and never dried out, bread is fresh and cushy (unless toasted then it's perfect to this crisp), and the cheese layered on in a nice thick slice. Quite honestly you get what you pay for here and more! It's very affordable, great for the whole family, offers chips drinks and cookies for add ons, has a television to watch "the game" in house if that's your thing, or you can have live entertainment by chatting with Sam - He's such a hoot! But the man at the cash register was more likely Greek, judging by the size of the portions coming out of this place. We remembered there was a sandwich shop someplace near our regular go-to place there - Mesa Grill. Sam's is just next door. It's a simple counter with an extensive sandwich menu of typical expectations. Somebody will custom make your sandwich Jersey Mike style, so you have to be on your toes and know what you want or don't want. I got a hot pastrami sandwich on white. "Only mustard and pickles." I instructed, but the nice lady helping me was sidetracked by a ringing phone, then asking an employee to come help, so asked me twice "do you want avocado on that?" I did let her put some swiss cheese on there because it wasn't worth raising my voice through my mask. "Prime meat" she said, topping the bread with an ample pile. Reminiscing about living & Santa Barbara & Sam's To Go came to mind. Many moons ago, when I was much younger, I worked in a prime location in SB off Hitchcock Way, as a professional match maker. One of the best things about being where I worked was the proximity of GREAT food spots near by. Whenever I was in the mood for a great sandwich, which was about 1-2 times a week, I would order from here. At the time there were 2 Sam's To Go sandwich shops & I believe the owners were family members that were rivals (I thought this funny when the owner told me all the reasons why his sandwich shop was better than the others). Anyways, I digress. My ALL-TIME-FAVE at the time was the #27 Avo, Turkey, Bacon & Cheese (I called it the ABCT- even though it also had lettuce & tomato). This had EVERYTHING you wanted! Even though I am now a plant-based vegan, just thinking about this sandwich still makes my mouth water! I always ordered a large, & even that wasn't enough for me! Just go! Try any one of the sandwiches. All that I've had were outstanding. I'm not even sure why they were so great, it's just a sandwich, but it was also more than that. It was the perfect amount of everything. The meat, bread ration was perfect & they seemed to always have the right amount of mayo & mustard. Definitely the best Sams To Go here in SB, and for good reason. Nothing fancy here, just simple and excellent quality sandwiches. We did some catering for work and the sandwiches were on point and fairly priced. Sandwiches are large and very filling with bacon, avocado, fresh bread, and simples meat cuts like chicken, roast beef. IMO Roast Beef is the best option.
