The receptionist welcomed us in offering beverages and also let us know we folks wait for the stylist to be ready. Riley was right on time and presented with a great attitude and smiley disposition. She was also darling! They had high end products including Keratase and Bumble and Bumble available for purchase. I've had one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever encountered!! Thank you Katie Pursche!! There was an accident on 440 which caused a complete shutdown of the highway this past Wednesday. I was absolutely stuck with no way out, and couldn't get to my 5:30 appointment until 6:15-6:30, according to my gps. I called multiple times and left messages beginning at 5pm. Since I couldn't get there by 6pm, the appt was cancelled. KATIE PURSCHE, pretended to be one of three owners, and relayed to me that the other two owners also agreed to not waive a 50% charge for the missed appointment. I have never cancelled, I have never been more than 5 minutes late, I've never been a no show! I haven't even rescheduled an appt which can't be said by the stylists who I have gone to in the salon. The ONLY REASON I was stuck on this highway during rush hour in the first place, was because my stylist changed her schedule just a few days prior and cancelled my appointment scheduled for tomorrow. I certainly didn't appreciate the change of appointment last minute considering it was scheduled many weeks prior, yet life happens. Additionally, I did not enjoy being stuck on a highway for 1 1/2 hours frantically trying to get to the appointment while doing everything I could to keep my stylist informed about the situation and then hearing Katie's response!! The stylists have the ability to cancel anytime they want, even same day and/or change time on same day, without any concern for customers' schedules, yet y'all expect customers to pay you when something completely unavoidable and not our fault occurs. There is no way I will pay this charge. I will easily find another salon to patron with a better management team! read more

After about 7 years of supporting the salon I was let down by their management's inflexibility around a scheduling mishap. Due to a work day running over and child care falling through I had to miss an appointment. Not great on my part but in 7years this is the first time this has happened. I go there every 7 weeks spending $250 - $350 a visit. I am never late and always tip. I also have recommended the salon to multiple people over the years. However today due to the policy change they are going to charge me 50% of the estimated bill for missing the visit. Initially I was unsure if this salon would be the right move for my kind of hair (poc). Not only is it curly, but i also have A LOT of hair; I haven't had a hair cut in 5 years. I was very worried at first because this was my first time at this location. As soon as my hair specialist; Jessica lynne, who is one of two curly hair specialist at the shop; came and got me for my appointment I knew I was in good hands. She first sat me down and asked what I wanted which was a deep wash, blowout and cut for my dead ends. She was honest a told me that she deals with a lot of people who have straighter hair but that she had 18 years of experience and would make sure she got me right. And she delivered. Washing my amount of hair was difficult but she managed and did a good job getting a deep clean all the way to my scalp, walked me over to her station to start detangling and sectioning for the blowout. After that it was set basically. She made very good time and my appointment was done in about 2 and a half hours which I was not expecting. She also pushed back her next appointment for me which was nice, obviously she wasn't going to leave me with half my head done, but she took her time and care to make sure I got what I asked for. I went there 2 times and it was ok, A, level 6 my stylist was nice and it is convenient, near my house. Not the best gray blend, but ok. I wanted better blending so they told me I have to use the services of a higher level stylist, J who is level 8, and more expensive, and I did ..my hair is 10 times darker than what requested, she told me it will get lighter just buy this product...I did, I ended up with brown hair on what is supposed to be gray blend and $480 bill...I am so frustrated...never stepping there again. read more

There is a ton of detail to look at while you are waiting for your various hair things to complete. I setup an appointment with Michelle for balayage and a cut based on the recommendation of a friend. Bonus you and your friend both get $20 off a service for referrals. I showed Michelle a picture of the color I was looking for and chatted through with her what I wanted for the cut. She made sure to ask plenty of questions to ensure the cut was what I was looking for before she started chopping. Michelle is a pleasure to chat with and I really enjoyed her as a stylist. My cut was amazing and exactly what I was looking for. My color wasn't exactly what I wanted. I was hoping it was going to grow on me overnight but it didn't. I dreaded calling Michelle the next day to tell her I wasn't 100% happy but had to do it. It's not cheap to get your hair done so I wanted to get her thoughts. She was super friendly about the whole thing and came into work early the next day (a Saturday no less) to fix the color for me. I don't normally leave bad reviews even when I'm not satisfied somewhere but I feel my latest experience is by far the worst I have ever had at a salon. Wanting something different I asked for a blonde balayage with a few strawberry blonde pieces (nothing too crazy). My busy schedule means I have to take whoever is available and I am ok working with less experienced stylist and have never had an issue in the past because normally Samuel Cole puts them through a great apprenticeship program. I could tell my stylist was fairly green and would have been ok if she had told me what I was requesting was above her current skill set. Instead she took the photo I gave her to the owner and came back to tell me that I would need to pay $60 extra and would probably need to come in more often for maintenance-totally fine. She also stated that I didn't need blonde because there was already enough at my ends. Never was there an explanation that I wasn't getting a balayage or how she was planning to approach my request. As she began randomly sectioning my hair I began to worry about this new foil approach and as she started applying red color directly to my roots I really started to freak out. I asked why she was applying red to my roots and she stated this is how we will get to the picture I showed her and to "trust the process." Not what I asked for but ok... As the few foils that went into my hair were constantly falling out, my concern grew but I thought maybe the toner will blend it all together. After washing, I became even more worried on how dark everything was. At the very beginning I asked about it and was told it would lighten as it blow dried. It didn't lighten. I now had dark red roots with blonde grown out balayage. I was not happy. In speaking with the manager I was told, low lights would fix the harsh line in my highlights so I sat around for that to be fixed. My hair looks like shit but whatever. I could just let it go, work with the salon on another visit, and be reasonable; however, when given the total of over $300 for this I was astonished by the audacity. When I stated I was happy to pay for the haircut, but not the color, the receptionist went to speak to the manager. I was then told the manager was in a meeting and all she would credit was 10% on the root touchup....a service I never wanted! I look worse than when I came in... seriously it looks like I'm cause playing one of the X-men. This is way I am leaving this review. The lack of customer service and professionalism since the change of ownership is insane. Hope they can turn it around but I will not return. read more

It's been a few years since I've been to SC, not for any dissatisfaction, purely circumstantial (I moved). I needed a cut right away and they were able to fit me in so I decided to make the drive. They paired me with a new (to me) stylist, Averyanna. Very professional and personable, but what impressed me most is that she listened. Going to a new stylist can be scary especially when you want a look for a particular occasion, which I did (job interview). Averyanna really listened to what I wanted- a professional cut that wasn't overly structured that also worked with my limited styling ability. She delivered 100%. I really felt that she worked with me to find a solution for my hair that I 1. really wanted and 2. worked for my lifestyle. Also- bonus- she's not pushy. Some stylists like to try to push you into what they think will be best for you and don't really listen to what you want. Definitely not the case here. For the third time, now, the front desk staff has been rude, unaccommodating, and inflexible. Today, we arrived at 310pm for a 315pm haircut for my son. He wears his hair short and usually requires clippers for 90% of the cut so his hair takes little time to finish. Evidently, management and our (now former) hairstylist require a 15 minute 'consultation' even though he has been there before for haircuts just not with this stylist. Well, they said because he didn't arrive 15 minutes early for his appointment that they could no longer accommodate cutting his hair. He is home from college for one weekend, it's his birthday and we have a special event scheduled. None of that mattered...they could have cared less. Completely inflexible and unwavering in their 'better than thou' attitude. They have definitely lost four customers (myself and my three kids), and I just told my wife, despite her going there for years, that we won't be spending our money at this salon moving forward. Absolutely unprofessional and ridiculous. Listen, the salon isn't on Park Avenue in Manhattan, wasn't busy, and there are plenty of others in Raleigh with nice people who want our business. Before meeting Katie, there was only one other stylist that I trust to cut my hair (she lives in CA so obviously I needed to find someone out here). I've tried a few people out here, and never left completely happy. Katie took the time to sit down and listen to what it is that I want and my hair goals. She also asked a lot of questions to get a clear understanding of my expectations. Before she cut my hair, she showed me how much she would cut and made sure I was okay with the length. As she was cutting she explained why she only put in a few layers and why she left the front part a little longer... etc. The level of service she provided is more than I've ever experienced at a salon. I am so glad I found her! If you want someone who truly cares about the health of your hair and makes sure you leave happy, then go see Katie!!! Wow, my first experience at Samuel Cole Salon couldn't have been better! I went on the recommendation of a friend after breaking up with my last hairdresser. I was nervous, as I had been with her for a couple of years and felt like she knew my hair but we just had some other issues. But after that, I wanted a salon that would take care of their clients, had the products that I like (Oribe), and have flexible hours where I wouldn't have to skip out of work for hours to take care of my hair. I arrived at the salon a few minutes before my first appointment with Lauren. I was greeted by the front desk staff with a giant glass of Prosecco and a survey about my hair preferences, trouble spots, etc. I perused the selection of Oribe products and was pleasantly surprised by the amount that they carried. More than my previous salon and I was able to stock up on my tried and true items. They also carried Bumble products as well as another line that I wasn't familiar with. Lauren came over to take me to her station and we talked about my hair and what I wanted from the appointment. I felt like she really listened and offered great suggestions. We also talked about the products I was using and I had questions on a couple of new ones. I was impressed that she actually swayed me from a couple of the new ones as based on our talk, she thought they would be too heavy or just not right for my hair. Selling products for the sake of the commission irks me so I appreciated her honesty. We went on to the wash bowl where we prepped for the cut, and had my hands dipped in the complimentary parrafin dip. That was a nice treat and slowed down my Prosecco consumption. My haircut was quick but thorough and she did a great job styling my hair post-cut. Check out was a breeze and I was able to get refills of the products I needed, including some travel size (and a sample) for my gym bag. Always had good results coming here and if there's anything I haven't been thrilled about - they are very courteous about fixing it. I have medium length, medium brown, curly hair and I get fine highlights here. They do a really good job of placement and cool color that I wanted. I've been with 3 different stylists. Denise most recently did a really great job. She's really easy going and great at listening. My hair is exactly as I wanted it. It's nice coming here because they bring you a beer and also offer some hand treatment service - I always forget to ask about it but I see people getting it. It's not too hard to get an appointment. I just feel that overall this is my favorite salon in Raleigh. I was at Marc Christopher before this and I just wasn't satisfied. I could see myself here a long time. Wasn't sure how to rate this cause I can see both sides and wonder if there was something I could have done to facilitate better communication. I like the salon and the staff. I just hated my hair cut. I came in for a short pixie. Something girly and professional. I gave pictures and explained what I wanted then left it in the hands of my stylist. I've had short cuts before and loved them on me. Granted, I had shaved sides so I knew we might have to go shorter than I have before. She also explained that to me but seemed excited with ideas similar to the pictures I showed her. Anyways, At the end of the haircut I had what looked like a toupee attached to the top of my head. The sides and back were MUCH shorter than the top and they were completely disconnected. They were buzzed shorter than my sides coming in originally with no fade or anything to the top. I think she may have messed up and used the wrong attachment on the razor but who knows. It was bad. she encouraged me to give feedback and got the manager for me to speak to. The manager was very nice and ended up comping my haircut and sending someone else over to see what they could do. The stylist did what she could but there wasn't much because it was so short. She did help fade it in a bit but again it still looks like a toupee. The advice she gave me was wait 5-6 weeks and come in to get it fixed once the sides grow out. I'm pretty devastated and do not look forward to leaving my house for work tomorrow, or the next 6 weeks, until it grows out. I work in a hospital and the hair cut is totally not professional and honestly just looks really bad. I don't know what to do, no amount of bobby pins or hair ties can fix this either. I first went to Samuel Cole salon in March of this year. My first appointment was not bad, the second appointment (the one I based my original review on) was excellent! My last few appointments weren't very good at all. One issue I had was my color was brassier at the roots the rest a lighter color and the haircut was uneven in so many places. I don't know if she was having a bad day, week or month, but for the money they charge, this should never be the case. I know they are moving to a new location soon, so perhaps her mind was on that, but still no excuse. When I lived in South Florida, I went to the same stylist for 8 years, but after moving here in 2001, I haven't been able to find a consistently decent hair colorist/stylist! I absolutely love Samuel Cole! I've been seeing my stylist Grace for over a year now and I couldn't be happier. Every time I have an appointment she is so bubbly, warm and professional and absolutely nails whatever I'm wanting, whether it's something new or a simple trim and color refresh. She's given and maintained the best bob I've ever had over the past few months, and has blown me away with the color every. Single. Time. I've never been one to consistently get my hair done or to spend a lot of money on hair -- before I starting coming to SC I was a Great Clips girl through and through -- but now I 100% see the value of investing time and money in a beautiful haircut and color. My beef is not with the stylist as she was not trained properly on how to cut my texture of curly hair. I asked all the right questions to make sure she was comfortable and confident and it still ended up being a horrible "trim". The shape and length are gone and I'm left with random strings of hair dangling in the back. I spoke to Mary the salon manager, she asked me come in and consult with a stylist that has curly hair(not sure why) but I complied, "take some vitamin B to help stop the shedding" she said. I asked about maybe adding 2 Rows of extensions just to give me my fullness and length back, "meet me half way" is exactly what I said. Mary said she would have to discuss it with the owners. Today I was informed that they can only refund the price I paid for the hair cut and a "I'm sorry". It took me forever to grow my hair out and now I have to start over. I'm in my 50's and my hair doesn't grow as fast as it used to and they can't even meet me half way to fix a problem that they created? I would never go there again and I would not recommend a salon that Doesn't try to right their wrong. In any case, if you found this on Yelp, that means you are looking for a new place to get your hair cut. Relax, you found it. Samuel Cole is an amazing salon...it's modern without being stark, trendy without being snobbish, and you get a true luxury salon experience for half of what you would pay in a big city. Free wine (or coke/water/etc.), parrafin wax for your hands, lots of options for extra services that are reasonable (eyebrows for $12), and the ever-important scalp massage during your shampoo. Do not overlook that, ladies! Dustin is a fantastic stylist: I have been going to him for about a year now, and I will tell you he does a great job. I recommended him to my sister and now he cuts her hair, too. He is warm and friendly, but if you aren't in a chatty mood, he's happy to focus on your cut while you relax. He can talk to anyone and find common ground, which is a pretty awesome quality to have. Plus, he does a great job on my hair and gives the best blow-out I've ever had (no flat ironing my hair stick-straight)! I highly recommend Dustin and the salon for a great experience. I had gone to SamuelCole's sister location, Moxie a few years ago. A lovely gal cut and colored my hair. The color in my roots wound up pretty red and when I got home and checked the cut, it was way off. There were really long pieces where it should have been short. I'm not a stylist but I knew something was really not right. Maybe it was just a bad day for her but I didn't want to go back to that particular stylist for obvious reasons and she was such a sweet gal, I didn't want to embarrass her by having another stylist re-cut my hair in front of her so I called Moxie to see if I could go over to Samuel Cole, their sister salon. The receptionist at Moxie quickly arranged for me to go to SamuelCole where a fantastic stylist recognized the errors (with utmost professionalism). She did a dry cut (to perfection) as well as a glaze to tone down the red and I loved the result. I have to say, SamuelCole won me over then and I've been a regular client ever since. I called today to get a revision on a cut/trim previously done there that I wasn't totally thrilled with, and I must say, the response I got was the reason they have the reputation they do as a premiere salon in Raleigh. Even though my original stylist wasn't available this afternoon, they were so accommodating and got me in immediately. They were so friendly and awesome in making sure my hair was exactly what I wanted. I couldn't be happier with the level of service today, and Jenny was fantastic, positive, and knowledgable. She even went a step further and curled the ends so I left feeling like I had Beyoncé-worthy hair. She also gave me great advice when I had questions about products for at-home use. One of the things I most like about her is her honesty. I am very non-committal when it comes to salons and stylists, but I have already booked my next appointment. Libby was my stylist and I can't recommend her enough! Listened to my requests and gave me exactly what I had envisioned. She was also a lot of fun to talk to, which matters if you're going to be sitting in a chair for 3 hours. I will say, this is the most I have ever spent on cut & color, but this is also the first time I actually love the results. This salon is absolutely amazing. Marlena is so incredible at what she does she's very informative and professional. If you are wanting the most gorgeous blonde hair she is the girl to see. And the scalp massage during the shampoo was so relaxing. The salon is very clean and they use the best name brand products like Oribe. read more

I love it here! Hard not to give 5 stars because when I sat down to outline all the positives they rack up quickly!!! Okay SO The salon: Cool, clean and more relaxed than a lot of other places in the triangle. When you check in you get a choice of beverage (wine,tea/coffee ). New clients also receive a gift bag that has a hair sample,chap stick and vouchers for a free eye brow wax a free hair treatment etc. Rewards: You should 100% sign up for the rewards system. Its free and you get points for every service/product you get. I've never seen this anywhere else do this so i was mega impressed!! More free stuff: They offer a free hand paraffin wax treatment every time you're there- it's very luxurious and gives the whole experience a spa like feel. Stylists: I get my hair cut by Erin and she's a legit magician. I have thin fine hair and she totally gets how to sort it out. She never gets snip happy , she cuts off how much I want. Products: They use oribe, R+CO and bumble & bumble products. So my hair always smells amazing. They have a wall of products. They even sell tools/nail polish. Of course they are on the pricier side. Logistics: I can always get someone on the phone so making appointments is very easy. They also have a "chat" function on their Web page so if you don't want to make a call you can I.M. them to change appt date/time etc. Parking usually takes me a while but I do always get a spot Lasting impression: This is the best place I've been to in Raleigh to get my hair done. After getting having an okay experience at another area salon, I decided on a whim to see if Samuel Cole could fit me in as a walk in. I had read the reviews and figured an hour or so of pampering was just what I needed. I really, really wanted this place to be my go-to salon. Upon entering the salon I was greeted by the receptionist, who honestly? Didn't see overly thrilled to be there. I think that's suppose to be the vibe at the salon, that sort of cool, nonplussed attitude. I've been to plenty of over-the top salons (Boston, Atlanta, NYC) and the first impression is very important. I asked if they could accommodate my walk in and she looked to see if she could. They could but only with a level 1 or 2 stylist. Apparently these are the folks that are either just out of hair school or only out a few years. I opted for a level 2 and made sure the receptionist understood that my hair was curly. I had walked in with it flat ironed. She took my info (and my credit card, they do this to prevent you from making an appointment and not cancelling in time or not showing. While I have never had to do this any place before, I get it.) I was offered a drink (they have a sheet with hot, cold, alcoholic) and told it would be a few moments. The salon is very big. The decor is modern and sleek and they had a great selection of new magazines. They also use Oribe and Bumble and Bumble products. I noticed a lot of stylist walking their clients to check out up could tell they were regulars. This got my hopes up that maybe I to, would become a regular. My stylist came out and introduced herself and away we went for a consult. I wanted to glaze my hair and have the ends trimmed. I also expected to get a blowout and style. Which I did, but the blow out and a flat iron? All extra. 52$ extra. Now the stylist did tell me it was extra (towards the tail end of our time together) and was nice enough to tell me that they had a "do it yourself" bar. But I didn't really think extra was going to be so much. Because the reality is that I have had my haircut by a master stylist (we are talking over 10 years in the hair business) and blown out and flat ironed for under 100$. I am all paying for what you get but in this case my hair wasn't the sleekest it has ever been. My cut? Was good, my color also good but I did not walk out of the salon with hair that was going to stop people and have them ask me where it was done. For the price I paid? That is how I should have walked out. The salon prides themselves on making sure the client is happy and this may seem like a bad review but it isn't. I can tell the place does hair well but I just think they are overpriced for what you get. I didn't feel overly pampered. I feel like I spent a lot of money for just a so-so experience. Maybe a different stylist would be the difference I need but I'm not going to take the chance. read more

I drive here from Durham, and it's worth it. Yes, it's expensive, but I trust them to do a good job. On your first visit, they give you a nice little gift with coupons for free eyebrow waxes and color glazes, and a free full-size Bumble and Bumble styling tonic. It's a nice gesture. My stylist, Jess, is a sweetheart, and she does a nice job. Wine, coffee, water, soda: all of these things are offered upon arrival. A great salon. read more
