I came here with a group of friends for a get together. The staff was very nice and the hibachi grilling of course was an impressive show! Our group was decent sized, about ten people. The service and drink refills were pretty slow even though the place had only one or maybe a second table we couldn't see occupied. There was also no one at the host stand when we arrived. Service was slow enough to a point where some of our party were joking that it was because we were large enough that a gratuity was already included. I understand staffing can be an issue but when drink refills pretty much never happen because the wait staff doesn't come back it's an issue. The four rather than five stars however is for the cross contamination issue. It's all cooked on the hibachi and we had some people ordering vegetarian and despite it being mentioned there was no effort to keep their food separate on the grill. So beware if you have dietary restrictions where this would be a problem. The portions are decent sized and the food is good, so still worth a try if that's not you! read more

It's been a minute since I've been at a hibachi grill restaurant. After Covid I find it a very rare occasion due to my busy schedule these days. An old friend wanted to hang out so we decided to come here. It was my first time here so I wasn't sure it was a hibachi until I walked in. The staff were very friendly and prompt. Me and my friend were seated at a grill within minutes and didn't have to wait long. There was a couple that was seated by us and I guess they were offended that we got the seats toward the front of the grill. All I know is they sat down for a couple minutes and then got up told the waiter something and walked off. We didn't see them again. Anyways the chef arrived and prepared our meal. He did an excellent job. My only complaint would be the fried rice could've used a little more seasoning and maybe one more egg. He only used two to prepare it for 4 people as 2 more people were seated with us after that couple left. I tried some of the sushi and egg rolls. My friend tried the calamari. Main floor was sticky as you walk across it which was a concern but that aside, the staff was great! The food was good and my wife and I split the main course and still had some left over. One thing weird stood out-there was no wasabi anchoring the fish to the rice, so things fell apart before I could get them in my mouth! I've never had nigiri like that before. I am from California, so I was hesitant about sushi in New Mexico. I asked for a simple request to substitute crab Stix in any roll that had crab mix. They said they couldn't. I was fine with that and decided not to eat, but insisted we stay because my host wanted to eat sushi. The reason I am giving them 1 star is because we were waiting for the waitress to come back and take our order, but we were ignored because a group walked in that have eaten here before, the sushi chef seemed to be really accommodating. I'm not gonna lie, this is by far the best hibachi grill in Albuquerque! I've been to all the others I think, and this one has the best seasonings on everything the flavors just combine like fireworks. The sushi was OK the service was pretty good but the flavor for everything is incredible. I had fried rice with salmon and the people with me had shrimp and steak and everything and everybody thought it was amazing and highly recommended. Roughly 8 years ago, I ate at Samurai with my now-fiancé and a group of friends just before our senior prom. Consequently, this restaurant will always hold a small, special place in my heart. I still have some pictures from that meal hanging in my living room! Now that I am no longer 17 years old and highly impressed by any meal that isn't delivered through a window, I can see that this is not a super fancy expensive place like I once believed. (I still get a little more dressed up when we come here, even though I'm aware it's not even remotely necessary.) I always enjoy the food, especially the fried rice. I could honestly just eat a bowl of fried rice and be happy. And it would be plenty, because boy are the servings huge! I usually order steak and Thomas almost always gets sushi (I even try a piece once in a while!). The best part of any teppan restaurant is always, of course, the show. I neglected to take any pictures but we had a very talented chef tonight. They're like one part cook, one part circus performer, and one part stand up comedian! Samurai has some great chefs and we've never been disappointed. I'm always grinning by the time my meal is ready. Depending on the night, the service can be a bit slow. Tonight, for example, my fiancé ordered a refill of his beer and they completely forgot it. By the time we realized they'd never brought it out, we were about ready to leave! It also took quite a while to get the green-tea ice cream I ordered, although it was totally worth the wait - so refreshing and different! I do really appreciate the generosity of their wine pours... I ordered a Pinot for $6 and received a nearly-full glass! Many restaurants will charge more and serve less. No local wines or beers available unfortunately, but their selection of sake and Japanese beer is rather extensive if you're feeling adventurous! They've gotten rid of the fish in the pond, which I think is a bit sad. I guess it's probably hard to keep them alive with people chucking pennies at them every night though. read more

I ordered the Filet Mignon with noodles, my wife ordered sushi (911 Roll and Hungry Roll), another ordered the Sukiyaki Steak with noodles, and finally the New York Steak with fried rice. Everything was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Our teppan chef Victor obviously was an expert and personable chef, and even taking time while cooking to answer questions and explain how he was seasoning our food. When our usual Friday night Teppan restaurant unexpectedly had a two hour wait (which we've never experienced there ever), we decided we didn't want to wait and drove to Samurai instead. We used to frequent Samurai back in the day, especially when we lived in the area. We hadn't been for quite some time as on our last few visits, we had noticed a steady decline in service, quality, and atmosphere, to the point that the other Teppan restaurants surpassed it in quality and overall experience. In fact, I was hesitant to return, but my husband wanted to give it a shot since it had been so long and he figured it would be the least crowded out of the Teppan restaurants. Well, he was right. Friday night at 7:30pm, and they were almost completely dead. The plus side is we got seated right away, the downside is that the restaurant felt mostly cold (atmosphere wide) and empty. Some positives, though, is that our waitress was super attentive and friendly. Our drinks never went empty and dirty dishes were cleared promptly. The chef was personable and cooked the food well, and the food was of good quality. Pricewise they are about on par with other Teppan restaurants, except you get a choice of either noodles or rice, not both. The portions are generous, though. Atmosphere wise, though, they fall short. My husband pointed out the last time we were here (I don't remember exactly when but easily over a year ago) that the plastic cups they used for the drinks were pretty old as some of them had a "Crush" soda logo on them and Crush hasn't been manufactured since 1999, the same year the restaurant opened. Last night we noticed the same "Crush" cups. The granite was chipping away on part of the table, also. Not any major issues, but perhaps some minor updates are in order. Also, it seemed rather dark, maybe some different lighting or decor to spruce up a little bit. Overall, not a bad experience, but we'll be inclined to stick to our favorite. read more

Got three types of sushi the Philadelphia roll was great the wahwah and the other one were both way too spicy I like to taste my flavors in sushi which should have a delicate flavor and meld the one with shrimp and salmon came in what smells like a teriyaki sauce ok I'm game but it's like they mixed half teriyaki and half pepper juice I mean it is New Mexico so anything is possible but will probably not order here again I mean 50 bucks for three rolls and we can't even eat two not worth it read more

We have been eating here for *years*! The food has always been good to downright incredible, which is why we keep coming back. The service, for many years, has been slow and lackluster, which has kept us from visiting as often as may want to. Talk about a revival!!!! Everything was delicious, the service was friendly and timely.. truly, the service was wonderful and smile-inducing... plus our Hawaiian roll was a beauty for the eyes and a flavor explosion for the mouth!! Recently though, after visiting some other establishments, it's becoming apparent that Samurai needs some facilities updates. The carpeting is old, the bathrooms are super-outdated (broken paper towel dispenser handles in the women's room?). It could use a facelift. This is our go-to for date nights, but we hope they invest in themselves soon and update their dining areas and bathrooms. read more
