We ordered a bunch of rolls, some sashimi and garlic edamame and the kama. They start you off with a free bowl of miso soup- a nice touch. The edamame was really good, so was the kama! Six of us wanted to give a farewell dinner to two friends moving out of state. We picked Azuma for the seating arrangement that allows everyone to see everyone else and enjoy their company. We also love the food as well as the presentation and we all left with to-go bags for another meal that warms up easily and is tasty. I have been here before so in know the food is good. Very dark inside. We went for a late lunch and were promptly seated. Chen was our Teppan chef. He did a nice show and prep our food the way we wanted. I like my filet mignon cut in small pieces and well done. He even cooked the veggies more for me as I like them cooked more as well. I am crazy for ginger sauce and he refilled it for me a few times. The kids enjoyed their fried rice, shrimp and teriyaki chicken. The other adult also had filet mignon plus shrimp. She had California roll, and we sheared gouza and edamame with salt. The waitress was good in refilling our drinks and brought out our miso soup promptly. At the first experience, the staff who came to take our order seemed to be rude too. Not a very pleasant welcome. Also, after the order, we were seated for almost 30 minutes before the chef arrived to cook our meal. Fun place to try live cooking teppanyaki style, however not the best food. One of our friends got sick too after reaching back home, not sure if that was from the food but she swears not to go here again. The restaurant is huge with plenty of seating and nice decor but they seem to be short-staffed at least in the chef head count. But the restrooms were too dirty. My wife says even the women one too. You will really enjoy the ambiance of this location. I felt like this is what I would see if I was I. Tokyo. The lunch menu is very reasonable and gives me what I want. Only thing is no substitutions seems like. I asked to replace a piece with one of the pieces you already get and told it would cost. I explained replacing not adding. For starters, I am a huge fan of this restaurant! We have been going for years, it has always been our go to when we want to celebrate or have an event in Albuquerque. That being said the last two trips have been a disappointment. The sushi has been fishy and they make my wife's food wrong. They always put some sort of sauce even after the fact that I asked her twice about the sauce on the steak and that was after my wife ordered. Spoiler alert... It came with sauce on it... The sushi was very fishy and the cream cheese tasted old. I am very experienced with sushi and I know old fish when I'm served it . I couldn't even eat the crawfish it was disgusting. Plus the calamari was burnt and tougher than usual. They have definitely gone down hill and are not as fresh as they used to be. Got charged gratuity for six people , that was bad for them because we usually leave 18 to 20% depending on the service. If the sushi restaurant smells like fish , get the chicken !!!! Maybe they will make a come back, but as of right now there are cheaper places with better quality. Water was good (I'm a weirdo, that matters to me) but the prices have gone up like any other establishment and I don't mind paying more but I expect quality food if I'm going to be charged that way. It's been at least a good 8 to 9 years since I last recall coming to this restaurant. I hadn't eaten all day and let me tell you I was hungry! Unfortunately since I was by myself I couldn't go to Takumi which is much closer to me. Why? They don't offer the Teppan meals on their dining side only at the side with the grills. Unfortunately they won't serve you at the Teppan grill by yourself and you'll end up waiting for a small group of other people to come in to be seated with them. Luckily there's a few places in town, this one included that serves the same delicious Teppan meals in their dinning area! So if you go alone you can still get the same great food! Plus they also offer sushi! The staff is very welcoming and friendly. Place was fairly clean. Walking in let me tell you I was starving! My server brought me some Miso Soup right away and she even took the time to explain some new items on the menu. I was salivating as I read every line on the menu. I started off with an appetizer of Egg Rolls. I was so hungry I ended up also ordering a roll of Philadelphia Sushi Rolls. I admit I'm basically a simp when it comes to sushi. I'm not all about the fancy sauces and spices. I'm just about the basics fresh fish, fresh rice, add some cream cheese oh boy! Yum! For the main course I stool with the usual, Filet Mignon Teppan dinner! I asked for some Teriyaki Sauce to dip it in! They did not disappoint! The plate had vegetables, noodles, fried rice, and of course the filet mignon! The noodles were perfectly cooked, subtle flavored. The rice had more delicious vegetables also subtle yet satisfying flavor. The vegetables were soft and delicious! The main even of course the filet! It was cooked just as I requested combined with the teriyaki, it was so satisfying! Toward the end I found my eyes getting bigger than my stomach. I like a challenge so I carried on and left nothing on my plate! I usually just get egg rolls and my dinner at these places but I was so hungry. I left so satisfied and full! Yelpis struggles with this place. In actuality this is really two separate and very very different restaurants. I was answering questions like"Is it quiet?" and "Is it good for groups?" Well.... It really depends on where you eat. The sushi side is for introverts. It is quiet intimate and romantic. This is the perfect place for quiet conversation with that one special person. The booths are comfortable, the lighting is soft, and the sushi is delicious. It looks like a work of art. The atmosphere lends itself to intimate conversation. The lighting is soft and subdued. This is the perfect place for a date night. The Teppan side is for extroverts. It is perfect for groups. It is loud. It is exciting. Everyone sits on bar stools that surround a huge cooking surface. Knives are thrown up into the air. The food is cooked flambé. There is sizzling and fire and flashing knives and excitement. Your group will be making friends with the other groups that are seated at your table. Watching your food being prepared is a big splashy experience. It is big. It is exciting. Any conversation is yelled over the sounds of sizzling food. It is great. That is perfect for big groups and lots of raucous laughter. I am a regular here. I really like the food. I usually go to the sushi side. I like to have sweet plum wine, or warm saki with a couple pieces of sushi. It is quieter than a library. I feel warm and quiet and comfortable. I engage in quiet conversation with a good friend. I see lots of couples holding hands, and whispering sweet nothings to each other. Neither restaurant is suitable for children. They will burn themselves on the cooking surface, or they will destroy the peaceful tranquility of other diners. Also, there is no menu for kids. Kids must eat adult portions of adult foods. If you want to spend $17 on squid sushi for your child, I suggest that you consider takeout. Both restaurants offer beer and wine. As you come in the door, you have to decide what sort of experience you prefer have that day. I have had Teppan and I liked it. It was wonderful. Most days I am an introvert. I prefer to dine on the sushi side. I like the gentle quiet. I like intimate conversation with a good friend. Although I am sitting in the sushi restaurant, I can have food from the Teppan side. They do like to warn me that walking it over to me is not as good as watching someone make it. I just smile and order it anyway. It tastes fine. Walking it over doesn't ruin it. A friend was passing through town and we wanted sushi. My favorite spot, Pacific Paradise was closed for some reason, so we came here. I'd been here several times before the Rona, but not since. Ordered takeout for lunch today. Was the worst experience ever and the food was even worse. One order of Baked Green Mussels and a Spicy Tuna Roll. Mussels came out about 15 minutes ahead of the Tuna Roll, so of course they were now cold and the mussels were burnt, chewy and fishy. I threw them in the trash and then went on to the Spicy Tuna Roll and after eating two pieces I knew that Tuna was old, threw them in the trash. I actually took alka seltzer as a preemptive measure. As I was paying three teenagers ran out the door after sitting down and eating without paying. A female employee ran out looking for them, but it was too late (not a fault of the restaurant). Our server Kirk didn't seem to realize we're in a pandemic: his gator kept falling & he touched his face constantly, touched my chopsticks/drinks. I kept saying I was ok to not take it like a shot & cause the scene but he kept going on while touching my chopsticks, my cup, and whatever in front of me. Our miso came out cold and we told him, he responds and looks at his watch "hmm that's weird..." He looked pretty high or faded. We don't care you do that lol, my partner is really cool, as long as you just give the service we're all good. He had us touch other sushi papers(from other customers) 15 minutes after we put our order in to "find which one was ours." Just really uncomfortable. We get things happen and it's hard out there so we tried to be patient but it was just the lack of caring about others & sanitation of our server/the establishment. I highly recommend the Spicy Girl maki. The miso was great but needed more green onion and tofu. The oysters were perfect. Really wanted to try their hamachi kama but they were out. This place is filthy and does not meet COVID protocol or regulations! The meat, fish, and chicken are to be cooked separate from vegetables but are not. I was hired as a server and was in training when I witnessed horrifying conditions in the back kitchen. Guests would never step foot in these restaurants again if they knew what really is going on! I saw firsthand the deplorable practices of this establishment. These are the same owners of Takumi and the one on Wyoming. I trained at the Takumi on Louisiana for 5 days and from my hands on experience I was shocked! I literally saw a chef drop a soup spoon on the grimy floor and pick it up and put it right back in the soup! I'm so disgusted by these establishments that claim greatness when in fact I'd be here all day writing about what I witnessed. Needless to say, when I voiced my concerns and even tried to clean myself, I was fired. P.S. Went to Azuma on San Mateo for Sunday lunch. We went to the tappon side where the chef cooks the meal in front of you. The chef was very entertaining and really knew how to use his utensils. All-in-all a very good experience. My buddy had the teraki steak, while I had the spicy steak. He said the teraki steak was excellent as was the spicy steak. The portions are ample enough to feed an elephant. (assuming that elephants like Japanese food) It will be enough for two additional meals for me. The misu soup could stand a lot of work though. This has traditionally been my go-to place for tepan. To be fair, they have half of their tepan tables under repair, but they could certainly be handling it better. When we arrived they asked the question they always do, "sushi or tepan?" Our answer was met with, "then you wait" and an abrupt dismissal of us to the corner. 45 minutes later, we were finally sat at a table Multiple people who came in after us, left before we were sat down. We happened to have time on our hands, so we waited patiently. I would've appreciated even a simple estimate of time, or a heads up on their website that this construction is hampering their ability to run their business, though. After asking, we were told this has been a 12 week project already. Seems like a poor business strategy to just let long term customer's experience be muddled by this repair project. Anyhow, the food is always great & the chefs are always fun. The upgraded bar in the back looked great. Once we were seated, we did have to wait a while before the chef came out, even though our table was full, and the waitress never came back to the table after our initial drink order. The fans on the tables that are working clearly need some repair of their own as they were incredibly loud this trip. All of the staff on this visit seemed flustered and over worked. What has traditionally been a great place seems to be suffering from some poor management. I hope I can say differently next time we visit. read more

I had placed my order online for a later pick-up. The restaurant was busy but I thought my order would still be ready at the time indicated on my order confirmation email. I had informed the hostess that I was there to pick up my order and she asked that I take a seat since it wasn't ready yet. I waited a while and asked where my order was and there was a small mix-up. I'll start by saying the food was excellent, but the 4 hour wait was less than acceptable. We arrived at 5, with a reservation. Our reservation was "lost" however we were still seated right away. Our waitress was sweet but seemed new and had no idea what she was doing(not an issue, everyone Was supportive of her and had no issue with that). About 30 minutes after we were seated, another chef came and said he'd be right back to start our meal. 45 minutes later, we still had no chef. Our waitress said it would only be a few more minutes before our chef arrived. At that point, 2 other tables (who sat down long after us) already had a chef at our table. 2 hours AFTER we were seat, we got up to speak to the manager and ask how much longer. At that point the other two tables that were seated after us had already eaten, paid and left. Our chef finally arrived. There was then a mix up in our orders so we ended up waiting for food for 2,5 hours. After our meal was complete, we waited another 30 minutes before having to get up again to ask for our waitress. She never came back so we went and got our own box's and went to speak to the manager again. He seemed not to give a care AT ALL that We had been there for 3.5 hours at this point. We then received our check, which was combined with our whole table (4 other families) and told we needed to separate it ourselves (even though we told them as we placed our order who would be on separate checks). After figuring out who paid for what, we gave the waitress our cards. We waited another 20 minutes to get them back. Come to find out, $20 of our cash was lost and another lady at our table was not given her card back (because it was "lost"). We left before they found it. In total, we were there for 4 hours, and the manager never batted an eye. A discount would've been nice, or an appetizer while we waited. At the least, the manager could've come over to talk to us. Never again will we go back here. I don't have a problem with a wait, but the customer service was les that acceptable. read more
