DISHONEST SCAM! They contract jobs out to independent contractors without telling you, and then charge you almost 3 times the going rate. I called for a locksmith because l got locked out of my house. San Carlos Lock and Key said one of his guys would call me back to confirm a time. The locksmith said he would arrive in 30 minutes but arrived in 45 minutes which wasn't too bad, but he charged me $385 just to pick a lock. Other locksmiths called me back within that time and said the job is $150, but I told them I already have a locksmith scheduled. San Carlos Lock and Key does not send their own guys. Instead, they contract the job out to whoever is available. They pay the contractors about $150 and they keep about $235 for simply being a relay telephone service. I know these relay services for contractors exist, and I intentionally did not hire any company who said they do this. San Carlos Lock and Key TRICKED me, making me believe they were sending one of their own employees, and not a contractor. I called back to complain, and San Carlos Lock and Key said that the price is because of "this area". I'm only 25 minutes away from them, and other locksmiths said that same service is $150. BEWARE SCAM ARTIST Shay Ben Simon was the representative I spoke with who I believe is the owner. I asked Shay to assist me with a lock issue at a property I own. He told me he would go and fix the mail key and a door knob. Without confirming a price with me first, Shay worked and then called me saying I owed him $300 to replace a simple mail box key and for work he did to partially fix a door knob. He said it would cost another $200 to fix the door knob completely saying he needed a "special lock" to fix it because it was a "commercial lock". He wanted $500 for something that should have cost $200 max. When I asked him to send me a link to show me this "special $200+ commercial lock" he sent me a an Amazon link to basic door knob and said the special one only a locksmith could buy. I had another locksmith come the next day and fix it for $80. When I pushed back on the price with Shay he started yelling at me. At this point I paid him to shut him up. Shay lied to me multiple times and when confronted he yelled. Extremely rude, unprofessional, and not trustworthy. He didn't confirm a price and just worked knowing he could try and scam me. I appreciated the speediness of this company. I called early on a Friday morning and someone was out within 45 mins or so. The professionalism of the locksmith was good, and he was kind and respectful. What I don't understand is how this company would not provide a quote over the phone, and then when the locksmith came he said $275, and then when it came to check out there was an additional $95 fee. This put me at $373 for an interior door unlock, that took less than a minute to perform. This feels like I was cheated, as the service fee was not talked about beforehand. And he left in a rush so when I got to testing the keys they did not open the doors. So I contacted him next day and set an appointment to meet up at the same spot I met him at previously. I have had really good experience with San Mateo Lock and Key in the past. I don't think they are 24 hours, but if your problem can wait until normal business hours, that is who I would recommend for a much more professional experience. Jay answered the phone and never mentioned that he wasn't Keylo even though i asked when he answered the phone if i reached Keylo. Jay came out and looked at the doors in question. He took pictures and told me he would follow up and charged me $99 and said it would go towards any work completed. After a week i called back to follow up since i had not heard back from him. When i got a hold of Keylo he explained to me that there is no Jay at their location. So now i have paid $99 for nothing but a guy to come out take two pictures and do nothing for me but waist my time. Be careful with the 4 and 5 star reviews you're reading on here; this company offers "discounts" on their prices if you're willing to give a good review--reviews they don't necessarily deserve. Read below for a detailed report on my terrible experience with this business. This review is specific to the emergency after hours lock repair/locksmith service, as opposed to their storefront operation (lock and key purchase, key duplication, etc). My wife and I called late in the evening after being accidentally locked out of one of the internal rooms in our apartment. During the phone conversation, the price quote for service was never fully clarified; the person who'd answered the call was dismissive and tried to rush us through what the service included (and what sort of payment options they took). We needed to get into the locked door, though, and no other local locksmiths were available, so we went ahead and asked them to come out. The technician claimed the lock on our door was impossible to unlock without the key, and that it would have to be drilled (I'm less likely to trust this was the case based on how they'd treated us in general, but maybe so...I'm obviously not a locksmith); they quoted us $354 and were unwilling to accept anything but cash. This is even though their website suggests they accept credit cards, and was one of the things the person on the phone had tried to avoid when we asked about it. Ultimately the technician required us to drive out with him and find an ATM in the middle of the night (this is also something they've made several other people do, you'll see it in the other reviews). At the end of the voyage to the ATM, the technician then said he'd drop the (cash-only) bill by $50 if we'd give them a good Yelp review! He actually asked me to pull out my phone on the spot and do it in front of him. Several other reviewers have also claimed this was the case. This points to a clear lack of integrity on their part, especially when combined with the awful customer service we'd received over the phone; it's also against the Yelp terms of service for business owners. Obviously I declined that "offer", so that I could leave an honest review instead. Bottom line, our experience suggests this business lacks integrity and (at least over the phone) anything even remotely approaching decent customer service. I'd also urge you to take the 4 or 5 star reviews you see here with a grain of salt; they could easily have come from people being paid to leave good reviews. read more
