I've had to use San Mateo Lock Works for a home lock out and a mail box lock replacement. In both cases, they offered fast and friendly service. The lock out was a little pricey, but they always are no matter who I call. I guess that's incentive to not lock myself out and to keep a spare key somewhere handy (it's not under the doormat!). This review is well overdue. My family, who has been in San Mateo/Hillsbourough for over 110 year and have been customers of SMLW for their entire 90 year history. They have always provided excellent service and advice. For a number of years I have gone in from time to time asking for a smart mortise lock and they said there is nothing they would recommend. Recently I went in and talked with Jesse, who is the next generation of managers, about smart mortise locks and he said they finally had one they would recommend. Erik is "the man" with regards to replacing the battery in my Mercedes key fob. I've been going around using the fob to start my car and the blade to open my car door. CALL THEM FIRST- My mother passed leaving an empty wall safe, which had been left unlocked for the last 10 years, because she had trouble using the dial. We are putting the house up for sale, and was told to remove the safe. No problem, until someone walking through had shut the safe and spun the dial. Now it is a problem, as the combo had been lost. The man told us to call the safe company, then call him back. It would cost $150.00, which is more than fair, as some of his competitors were charging much more, basically holding the combo hostage. He took the time to call the safe company, which has a ridiculous hold time, and would be over the next day. It turns out that night my son got into the safe. So I had to cancel the appointment. The deadbolts on one of our doors we're having difficulty opening/closing. The deadbolt on another door stopped closing altogether. The keyed knob also on the same door wouldn't latch. The door had shifted. I worked with SMLW on options via phone and email. Jonathan was very responsive - even over the 2022 Holiday Season. He patiently listened to me vacillate :) between options: whether to upgrade the hardware or keep the hardware and fix the alignment issue. We were on the midst of a major bathrooms remodel (3) at our place. Matching the color and style of said doors with the (matte black) new door hardware inside the house was important. I was going back and forth. We finally decided on getting what we had on there back into working order and rekeyed. Jonathan came out the morning of the same day. He was prompt. He was fast. He was precise and meticulous. He even educated me on what a "double cylinder" lock is. It was a great experience. The final cost was spot on with the estimate. We've been going to San Mateo Lock Works for years off and on. Recently, we had an issue with a front door handle and called for help. Eric invited us to email him a couple of pictures and he graciously diagnosed the problem. He even offered to walk me through taking it apart and reassembling the door handle to see if it is fixable. I ended up bringing in the door handle to their shop where they discovered the lock was worn and needed replacement. They were able to provide a replacement on the spot and I was on my way with a new, keyed door handle in minutes. Eric even followed up after I called with an installation question. What a great place to get my electronic car key battery replaced, for a reasonable price. They have a great automated phone system for when calling ahead. On top of that, a gorgeous selection of locks for your house. Service was super efficient and the vibe of the workers is great! They warned me of a corroded key, and that if my car key didn't work, they were happy to reimburse for the battery replacement to order me a new car key. I was able to get an appointment with in an hour. the work to replace the lock was done quickly, efficiently and very neatly, including vacuuming up any metal shavings from the work remo ing the old lock. Eric is awesome!!! Going above and beyond to help me with my lock. I needed the zipper lock on my bean bag chair cover to be unlocked because the key was stuck on the inside. He searched his entire wall of keys trying to find one that would fit. To no avail, he decided to tweak one of the keys to see if he could get it to fit and turn. Jesse was so easy to work with and got back to me right away with scheduling like he said he would. We moved into a new house and needed to change three locks. We were recommended to go here and called ahead of time. We arrived at the store on 321 2nd avenue in San Mateo. Inside, we spoke with the salesperson and explained what we needed. We were assured that it was absolutely doable. After being given a quote, the salesperson said that he would call tomorrow to arrange the installation time and discuss further details with us. No one called, we waited a few more days. Still nothing. I decided to call back myself and the same employee answered the phone. When I reminded him about my case, he had no recollection and did not know what I was talking about. He proceeded to explain that "they are busy here" and that's why he didn't call. Then said he has a client right now and can't talk anymore but would call back. He did call back, and as we spoke I realized that no order was placed, no installation was organized, and nothing was done to help us in our simple request. It was very unprofessional, no care about customers, no keeping their agreements, and don't want business. (Quote was Not cheap at all btw) based on my experience with this particular store, I wouldn't recommend anyone to go there and have a similar experience. read more

Service was great as I was jumping off the train and asked if they could still help me out. They made my 6 keys in less than 1 minute and while they were closing shop. I was stunned that I paid $25 for 6 key copies though. Sort of sounds outrageous in pricing. I actually wonder if they overcharged me for two keys by accident. I did recall the guy saying 8 when he was ringing me up- I didn't understand he may have been talking about keys. Had 4 keys on my chain but only got 3 copies. I'll go back and see what they say!
