This is my first time trying specifically tapas / Spanish food. Overall, our experience was great! The food was delicious, especially eggplant tapas and Spanish Octopus, these were my favorite. The eggplant tapas were savory yet sweet because of the honey drizzle, salmon tapas were very much similar to a lox bagel (but make it on bread), pork was my least favorite just because it was pre on a dry side. The Spanish Octopus was nice and tender, not chewy at all (!!!). I would definitely come back for it. Overall, menu is well priced and everything was very good. The beer options are very limited, unfortunately, but the wine selection was pretty good in my opinion. The outside was almost empty because it was hot outside during the day. I think this restaurant definitely deserves more stars! Came here right after Christmas and dining outdoors, the decorations remind me of modern European. We were served with churro and ice cream first. I liked that they served hot chocolate sauce with churro, and the Belgium chocolate ice cream is definitely up there - not too sweet! We ordered Croquetas, Patatas Bravas, and slider for our tapas and they were all delicious. I especially loved the slider, very juicy and the only complaint that I had was it's not big enough. Finished up with a cranberry pastry, it's a bit on the sweet side but I still enjoyed the layer of stuffing! The seating outside is lovely! Decorated beautifully and fun ambiance for families or a date night. The churros were incredibly delicious! You can get a platter of them where you choose different kinds. My niece and nephew loved the ones filled with Nutella. Took a bit to get them but they came out warm. Have wanted to try this place for a while and finally did on Saturday night. Our reservation was at 7:15, but when we arrived it seemed pretty dead. We sat outside which had a really nice vibe. The table they seated us at was HUGE - like for a party of 10 which felt odd. When I said something they told us that they use it to seat parties at either end of the long table, but honestly on a date night with just 2 of us, it felt awkward. I did not see any 2 tops, but a 4 top certainly would've been better. We ordered a variety of foods from their menu which were all perfect OK, but nothing we will remember or go back for. My husband said every dish felt like it was just missing something. Nothing was bad, but it wasn't good either. We ended with the churros and the chocolate dipping sauce. Now, I LOVE a churro.....would double-fist them at any street fair, but they gave us 5 small/thin ones and there were 3 left if that gets the point across. I do not think I have ever left a churro behind in my life until Saturday night. If you go here, you'll have a perfectly fine meal, but there is so much better food in Austin. Their happy hour is an amazing deal! Both food and drink specials are super reasonably priced especially for Austin. As someone who lived in Spain for 3 years, I've eagerly been waiting to be able to go and it didn't disappoint! I loved their patatas bravas and croquetas. Worst of all, it felt like the rice and shrimp were being rationed, seriously, the portion was extremely small for the price. After reading their initial reviews, I was hesitant about visiting, but I think they've worked out all of their kinks after opening. We had a really great time visiting San Gines. We ordered two chocolate martinis that were delicious. Their churros were thin but long, and the chocolate dipping sauce is rich, so we could have split an order of 4. The patatas bravas and croquetas were also tasty. The spot is quite vibey too with dim lighting inside. We visited on a Friday evening and they had an open air bar, an indoor section for seating, and a patio section. There were a few fire pits in between tables outside. When you arrive, you order everything at the first bar to the right. They give you a number and they bring the items to your table. The order came out relatively quick and we opted to sit at the bar. After being invited by the manager, Valentina, and hearing some good feedback from friends who went recently, I decided to give San Gines another chance. I'm glad I did. I found out most of the (bad) staff from the opening weeks is gone, and I was pleased with the new staff, who was welcoming and nice. The place is just as pretty as it was, but now it's not overcrowded, you can find some good seats inside and outside. The drinks/coffees are all looking delicious, and the pastries are from Teal House (you can't ever go wrong with them!!). I had the chocolate latte and really liked it. I tried the three huevos plate, and didn't love the texture of the chorizo but everything else was very good and price is reasonable ($15 for a big plate). I was too full to give the churros another try, but I will go back and get them on my one (aka not being offered them, and staying impartial). I tried out San Gines a few days ago, and had an overall pleasant experience! My friend and I originally went to try the churros, but we also came on a Friday evening, and were hungry enough for some savory food before diving into just churros! Parking is not too bad, but it can be hard to turn into the lot if you are driving at night since the area is not super well lit (like most of Austin). The space itself is relatively small, but with how the seats are spaced out, it feels like you can fit a lot of people into the space. And when we were there, there were plenty of patrons, but getting up to go use the restroom felt kind of awkward since I bumped into some chairs on my way. To start off, I had a sparkling water and brussels sprouts. My friend had a Spanish omelet which she thoroughly enjoyed. I wasn't a fan of the brussels sprouts as they weren't crispy, and were more chewy in texture. They also came out in a huge bowl, and it felt weird just eating a large bowl of mediocre brussels sprouts for dinner...also, $21 for Topo Chico and brussels sprouts? It was definitely on the overpriced side. The churros were not bad though! $8 gets you four skinny and long churros to dip into liquid chocolate. I would have liked it if the chocolate had been sweeter. The churros were light and had a soft crispy texture to them, especially with the added cinnamon sugar. Next time I have a craving for churros, I know where to go, but I think I'll have dinner elsewhere next time. read more

Im Spanish from Madrid,Spain. I went to San Ginés for the first time in August just a few days ago. The first thing I noticed it was hot in the restaurant. I asked them if there was a problem, waitress said it was bcz of the front door being opened. Uh ok. Second she poured us water and it was room temperature it had no ice! I ordered beef empanadas but the waitress said they were out. So I ordered the chicken empanadas and some chocolate con churros. We waited for our meal. It the churros came before our chicken empanadas. So I told her cancel the empanadas. I also ordered the tortilla de patata to go. We were not impressed at all by the service or the food. When I got home the tortilla was good but small for 12$ and the bread was not oiled or even toasted. Never will we go there again. read more

San Gines is such a cute spot and I am obsessed with their patio area! I used the live fairly close to the this location when they were doing construction but ended up moving before they opened. I waited months and was finally able to make my way back to try the churros I had been dreaming of. We ordered the cinnamon sugar pretzels with dolce de leche sauce and it was fine. It didn't live up to the hype in my head. To give you some context, I am a simple girl who loves me some Costco churros and these were nothing like that. I assume these are more authentic (they were thinner and felt slightly oiler). Again, this is a personal preference and I'd still highly encourage folks to come try it for themselves! Came in for breakfast and had the croissant sandwich with avocado, bacon, and egg (I skipped the cheddar cheese). I love this place! Located right on South Lamar, they even have a small parking lot. When you enter you're greeted by the bartenders. I have only visited for happy hour and dinner, but you order at the bar and then they bring the food out to you. The inside is simple and comfortable, but the back patio is amazing! You are totally transported out of a busy main road in Austin. The service is extremely friendly. They have a great happy hour! Glasses of wine for only $7! I got the tempranillo and my guest got the sparkling wine. We shared patatas bravas, brussel sprouts (I had these both visits and they are amazing), and croquetas. Everything was very cheap on happy hour and is still a full sized portion. Don't leave without trying the churros! Looking forward to going back in the day time for coffee and breakfast. So amazed that we got a San Gines! I have been to the one in Madrid and was so surprised to see they were opening one up here. Parking - I was fortunately able to walk from my house but there is some on site parking, though I imagine during peak hours it will be tough. Ambiance - what a beautiful job they've done with this space! The interior is gorgeous but I was blown away by the how spacious and beautiful the patio is. Such a vibe. Service - this was the only thing I didn't love, but I imagine a lot of it is because they're new and are still getting into the groove of things. Its unclear what you can order from each counter (ex just drinks on one side of the inside bar, not the outside, churros at the cart) so often people would line up inside just be told to go order elsewhere. Food & drink - I got the classic churros and hot chocolate combo and it was divine! I want to come back and try more of their pastries as well as their paella. Maybe I hyped myself up too much for this and set expectations too high, but as Obi Wan once said, these were not the churros I was looking for. They were either overcooked or left out for too long, leaving them quite hard. The chocolate dipping sauce was the only bright spot. Honestly, just okay. Definitely not the quality of Madrid and certainly overcooked. Could be due to just opening up a week ago and needing to get things in order (although it was not busy at 6:30 PM on a Tuesday)...could be that this location is catering to a perceived American palette (convenience and tons of sugar). It was delicious but didn't taste super fresh like it was just made (we came about 8pm on a Sunday evening). The chocolate for dipping came in a paper cup, and I say this completely with constructive criticism - it's lazy. The indoor and outdoor space itself is cozy, dreamy, and underutilized. My friends and I have been waiting for this place to open for almost a year now, and we finally got to try it the other day! When it first opened, I saw that it was super crowded, and it was definitely still crowded but we didn't have to wait at all. I also had no issues finding parking in their parking lot out front. There are indoor and outdoor spaces, but unfortunately it was raining when we went so everyone was crowded inside. When you first enter, you can place your order at the counter before grabbing a seat. There are four separate menus, listing coffee, breakfast, lunch/dinner, pastry, cocktail, and of course churro options. We decided to try: - Cafe Catalan (2/5): This is a double espresso with lemon zest, milk, and bruleed sugar. Honestly, it just tasted like espresso. If you're looking for an interesting coffee, I would recommend the San Gines Choco-Latte instead, which tastes like a mocha. - Churros (5/5): This was easily my favorite part of the experience. The churros were brought out with our coffee, and you should be sure to enjoy them while they're still fresh! One of my friends is from Spain, and she showed us her favorite way to eat them, which is to order them plain and get sugar on the side to dip them in. The churros also came with a small cup of hot chocolate to dip them in, which was super delicious. The hot chocolate is not like the hot chocolate I normally see in America, which is mostly milk. It was super thick, almost like melted chocolate with just a little cream. The churros were crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle, but quite oily so grab some napkins! - Tortilla Espanola (4/5): This was our favorite savory dish! It was mostly egg, similar to an omelette with potatoes and onions inside. I enjoyed the salsa it was plated with, which was just a little spicy. The portion was perfect for the three of us to share as an appetizer or for one person to enjoy as an entree. - Huevos Rotos (3/5): This is like a Spanish breakfast hash, with jamon, chorizo, bell peppers, eggs, and potatoes. I appreciated how much jamon they included, but I wish the potatoes had been crispier. The chorizo was also overcooked. - Croquetas (3.7/4): I thought these were good but I wish they were a little crispier! Overall, I had a good experience here! After reading some reviews from when they first opened, I would say they've ironed out some issues they were having and you should give them another try.
