What a neat place!!!! There's probably a half dozen of these restaurants in US. It hails from Spain. About 20 women met here for lunch and things went really smoothly. You order at the counter and get a number and a wait person brings it to you. They're also very quick to pick up empty dishes. Place a super clean. It's also spacious with dining area inside in a large outdoor area. Most of us went for brunch type items like eggs, avocado toast, but some elected some of the tapas like the shrimp which was plump and savory. Most had coffee and a few of us had hot chocolate. There are two types of hot chocolate, the Spanish and the American. The Spanish is more like pudding. I understand this is the way I served in Madrid and you dunk churros in it. This place is gorgeous! The cream and green color scheme is so pretty and inviting. This spot would be perfect to study at or work remotely. The patio is spacious and has a wide variety of seating options for groups or duos. I came at 3pm on Saturday on the first (or maybe second) day they opened. It was very full but I was still able to find a seat pretty easily since there's so much seating. I skipped the coffee/drink line inside and came straight outside to get in the churro line. The drinks line was a bit long and I'm not sure how long it takes for drinks to come out. They had multiple menus: one for cocktails, pastries, snacks, and coffee. The line for churros was pretty short, only a few people in front of me. Orders come with 3 and chocolate, you can get them with sugar or not. sit only took a few minutes for my churros to come out. They were crunchy and the chocolate was rich and light without being too thick. It was a fun little snack to have after a meal. They have a lot of staff to serve the churros and they are constantly cleaning to keep the place neat. It was pretty cute here! I'm looking forward to returning and trying the chocolate martini. We went to celebrate daughter's graduation at UT and it went incredible. I was previously talked with the general manager about the food the how many persons and it was really smoothly the servers were cordially and professiona. The food was very good with patatas bravas pan con tomate y jamón serrano, tuna tartare seafood cocktail, Caesar salad , Spanish Brussels, spinach empanadas Spanish wine and chocolate con churros for dessert. My sister brought me here as a surprise - a cute looking cafe with churros and chocolate and only one other location in the US and comes straight from Madrid. I really wanted to love it, but unfortunately it really did not meet the mark. Firstly, the location is awful to get to/park at and it has a cute vibe that does not fit with the surroundings at all. I understand that this is out of their hands in some ways, but it ruined the atmosphere for me. The outdoor back patio is quite nice with bright colors and various seating areas, but chairs placed on black rocks that cause a lot of wobbling and flies everywhere. The drinks you can order at the inside counter, but churros and tapas you order at the two food trucks on the patio, no signs whatsoever to lead you, so my husband got in one line and was told it was the wrong one, then had to get in the other line. They have quite an overpriced menu for order up service and drinks called "lattes" that yes, in Europe probably are considered lattes, but in America is not what one thinks of when they order a latte - one shot of espresso in a tiny cup with some condensed milk. They were quite bitter and not very appealing. We had a chocolate croissant that looked lovely and laminated and crisp, but the minute I bit into it, there was butter oozing out of it with every bite, and not in the good way. Not enough chocolate either. And the one thing that I wanted to be really good, the churros, were some of the worst I've ever had unfortunately. Good hot chocolate sauce (how hard is that really), but thin, stale tasting churros with none of the gooey richness on the inside that I was looking for. Counter Service. The churros were good, but not necessarily worth the hassle. They have a very small parking lot that is hard to get in and out of, and rarely has spaces available. There is some street parking, but since it is close to where you have to have a permit to park on those streets, there is not much. I know that we have made multiple attempts to visit where we decided it wasn't worth the hassle after having a lot of trouble finding parking. Also, they advertise that they have Paella, which is the real reason I have wanted to try it so badly, but apparently they don't actually have Paella, and are still "working" on getting it on the menu. I thought the coffee we ordered was good. The hot chocolate served with the churros is a little confusing. Great for dipping, but too thick for drinking. So if you go for the Churros, don't depend on the "hot chocolate" served with the churros to be your drink. It is a nice thought, but a bad location. If you are just looking for a light snack, or a churro, and you are able to find some place to park, then give it a shot, but overall, we have decided it is generally not worth the hassle. Maybe if they ever get paella on the menu then we will make a point of trying to go back again. read more

Charming atmosphere and amazing churros. The space is much larger inside than I expected and beautifully laid out. The churros were definitely the star of the show served with a small pot of rich, dark chocolate on the side. Would be great for a date or to simply enjoy a spring evening with friends. I'm really glad I waited to check them out, because it looks like they've got the kinks worked out. When we went it was pretty slow, so we quickly ordered inside our churros, were given a number and sat down. Both came within the time we were given (~15-20 mins), and were brought out to us from the food truck by a very nice woman. She was hustling! While this spot is hip and new in Austin, it is part of a more than century old family. It began in Madrid, the capital of Spain and has been in business since the late 1800's. The place itself is very nice, very chic in a modern style. The outdoor space is very nicely put together. Being right in the middle of hustle and bustle of this largish city, you could easily forget. It has a variety of seating options and some of the chairs are really comfortable. It is also dog-friendly, which is nice. One thing that I think a lot of people don't realize is that American chocolate is not like the chocolate of almost any other country, particularly Europe. In Europe it has dramatically less sugar as is generally more rich. Even the dark chocolate over tends to get a bit bitter whereas the dark chocolate in the old world does not, at least not in my experience. Here at San Gines, they are using chocolate imported from Spain. We ordered the churros, hot chocolate and two different Spanish coffee drinks. It took a while to get everything but then the place was packed with a constant flow going in and out. The churros were good. Per my wife, they seem to be very authentic. I have never been a fan, I like pretty much anything dipped in chocolate though. The coffees were what I remember from Europe. They were strong, tasty and lacking that nasty bitterness that is so common in other popular joints in our country. I added some chocolate to mine and it was sweet but yummy. A word of warning, Spanish hot chocolate is apparently just dark chocolate that is heated up, so crazy rich and quite thick. Good but a bit too much for me. Would be perfect with an equal amount of half and half or heavy whipping cream to lighten things. All in all, love the place and look forward to going back of an evening with my wife to just sit, sip and chill. Wouldn't mind trying some of their Spanish tapa type dishes as well. read more

The place has these fire sections for cold weather which was very great and the staff was nice enough to give us more chocolate dip for the churros. So much hype behind this spot and we went because their instagram said they are finally fully open but we got greeted very rudely. As I opened the doors because I could see people inside some guy shouted in my face that they were closed and that we needed to understand that and that his staff has been overworked. He continued to shout for us to leave so to avoid any conflicts we left. Please update your instagram your website or something so everyone is aware that you are temporarily closed because after us so many other people got turned away. Now the separate lines for drinks and food can be a good thing if you're only getting one or the other. The value of the food is a little low for the price of what you pay. Heard how good the churros were and was excited to try this place. Was slightly confused when I arrived as there were lines in multiple different places from food trucks outside to a line inside. Went with the indoor line as I only came to try the churros. Appears that was the correct line as I think one of the outside trucks is to place orders for other food items and the other truck is to pick up your food order. The indoor/outdoor space itself is pretty cool with a fair amount of seating available outside. The indoor also has a long couch as well as some small tables. We ordered churros with sugar and then another order with cinnamon sugar and also got a hot chocolate. They gave us a number and told us they'd bring it to us. I think it took close to 45 minutes to get the churros so the wait for them was fairly long. The churros come with a warm chocolate to dip them in which we were very thankful for because without that the churros would have been quite bland. I thought they had a nice crunch and texture to them, but I could barely taste the difference between the sugar and cinnamon sugar ones and both barely had any flavor. Here's a review I didn't think I would need to leave. I was in a wreck on S Lamar right next to San Ginés-- luckily nobody was injured, by my car was wrecked. I managed to pull into the side of the driveway and sort things out. As I was on the phone with AAA I had an employee come out of the restaurant, interrupt my call and ask me (hilariously) to move my car. I told him I couldn't move it and I was working on getting a tow truck (I was actively on the phone trying to communicate with my AAA). He seemed unimpressed and went back in. After I sorted out a tow driver, I went inside and spoke to a different bartender, explaining that it was my car and someone was on the way. He could not have been ruder. He openly rolled his eyes at me, said "it's whatever." He seemed annoyed I even bothered to talk to him. I had been hoping to sit inside to calm down and wait, but after those interactions, I had no desire to do that. I was shocked by how rude and careless the staff was. I did eventually get a glass of water, but only guests were the people to show me kindness or concern as I was openly shaking and crying from the adrenaline. I have never eaten here, but I certainly never will now. I'm from Austin, and it's always been the community that I loved. I have been a service worker and bartender for years, and I usually give them a lot of slack, but this was pathetic. Couldn't be more disappointed in how I was treated today. What a very quaint place in South Austin. Some people who have reviewed here have the silliest things to give low star ratings for. Parking has nothing to do with the fare. The layout of the ordering and the food pick up is a bit different but the food is terrific. Having been to SPAIN several times, I can certainly give a comparison rating, the tapas are delicious!! The churros are great, and the drinks are various. I'm not quite sure about the strength of the espresso drinks, but I've been here several times and it is a great place to sit and chat with your friends eat good food and drink!! The manager was so nice to explain to me the history of the restaurant and that it is family owned. It's a nice addition to the "04"!!
