This place had been in my list to visit for quite some time, and hubby's birthday was the perfect occasion. The building and decor is very charming. We got seated right away, but waited a good 10 minutes before our server came to fill out water glasses. In his defense, and poor management, he did have to check out a party of 15 with all separate checks. We orders a round of drinks, the Brussels, Octopus and Hamachi. All good, but like others reported, it was missing seasoning to take it to fantastic. Next then linguini, chicken Milanese, the croquets and tomato soup. Chicken and soup were perfectly seasoned and tasted great. Honestly, I'm really disappointed with my experience this time around. We previously had an engagement dinner here and had a great experience, so I was especially surprised by how poorly things went this time. First, being charged a $25 cake-cutting fee for bringing your own birthday cake is ridiculous to me. I've brought my own cake to upscale restaurants and have never been charged a fee like this. I understand restaurants have policies, but this isn't about whether you can charge a fee, it's about basic hospitality and human decency. When someone is celebrating their birthday, charging $25 just to cut their cake feels incredibly tacky and leaves a bad impression. The service was also very slow, and despite specifically telling my waiter that I cannot eat pork for religious reasons, my food came out with pork. That is not something I should have to overlook, especially after clearly communicating a dietary/religious restriction to my server. Also there was little to no accommodation for dietary restrictions, if I can't eat pork why can't I substitute a fruit. the staff didn't seem knowledgeable about their own menu On top of that, the restaurant seemed unable to handle a larger party. Overall, the experience felt disorganized and very different from the positive experience we had here previously. I already know the response may be, "This is our restaurant policy," but that completely misses the point. Policies aside, hospitality matters. This was someone's birthday, and the overall experience was incredibly disappointing. I arrived early in the morning expecting it was a coffee shop but after entering the front door noticed white tablecloth tables and staff dressed to the nines. I completely had the wrong impression in my head but quickly adapted and took a seat at the bar. I ordered a coffee and looked over the menu. The staff was super nice and friendly and suggested I should order the Classic Churros with chocolate so I did and selected cinnamon sugar ones. It a very elegant place with both indoor and outdoor seating. They are also pet friendly so next time will bring my baby girl. At this early hour I was the only one dining here but there was a steady stream of people coming by picking up orders. Parking was not a problem but there is only a few spots in front so either take a chance or ride share. The coffee was served in a beautiful handcrafted mug and had tremendous flavor. Churros arrived and sat six long sticks with a cup of warm chocolate, They had tremendous flavor especially when dipped in the chocolate. I came to San Gines for their happy hour and had a great time! They had plenty of options for only $7. I opted for the red sangria, and my friends picked one of the frozens and a dirty martini. Having tried all three, I would say their drinks are pretty strong. My sangria wasn't as strong of course, which I prefer, but I loved it. The cinnamon in the sangria also added a nice touch. For the happy hour food options, we ordered the croquettes (which I did not have as they have ham), the Brussels sprouts, and the potatoes. The potatoes were good but I'm not sure I'd get again, but the Brussels sprouts were perfectly crispy and in a honey (slightly spicy?) glaze. So good! I loved. San Ginés is a Spanish style cafe located on South Lamar that specializes in tapas or shared plates as well as fresh golden churros. They have indoor and outdoor patio seating options. We were seated in the outdoor patio that had fans to keep us cool and a very relaxing atmosphere. Service was very attentive and friendly throughout the meal but the dining experience was a bit laid back and slower paced like a typical Spanish meal. Started the meal off by trying the red sangria with spanish red, brandy, orange liqueur, cinnamon, apple and orange and white sangria with Spanish white, tequila, pineapple, peach and cava. The sangria could have used some fresh fruit or more fruit flavors. We shared Pinchos or bite sized toasted baguettes with your choice of three toppings. We ordered chorizo with crushed tomato and pork tenderloin with Brie cheese. These were not my favorite because the baguette overpowered the other toppings. The chorizo was a bit too spicy and the tenderloin was overcooked. I also tried the spinach empanadas that come with an order of 2 with spinach and ricotta filling. I added the cilantro sauce which was out of this world and so flavorful. I ordered the beet salad with roasted beets, arugula, goat cheese, and candied pecans. The salad was very fresh and flavorful. My friend ordered the tortilla espanola, a Spanish omelette served with garlic aioli and house salsa brava. This was more like a brunch option in my opinion but was still very tasty. For dessert, ordered the infamous filled churros where you choose from your choice of three fillings, we tried dulce de leche and Nutella. They are known for their chocolate that has been centuries in the making, so definitely order that with your churros or in your churros if you are up for a splurge. San Gines has been on my list since it opened but I finally visited after finishing dinner nearby for some churros and drinks. It was a bonus that there was live music. The space itself is really nice - open and airy, while capturing the Spanish feel with the textured tile and mimicking the green from its Madrid location. The interior space itself is not that big - it has a few tables and the bar and cashier but it seamlessly flows outside to the more spacious patio. After ordering up front, seating is self-serve, with food and drinks being delivered to you by the number card and stand they give you. Sitting back in the patio, you really do feel transported and you don't notice the South Lamar hustle and bustle. This on a beautiful day that isn't scorching would be an optimal place to be. I was sad they didn't have a Tinto de Verano on the menu. Maybe when it's officially summer but I know they should have the ingredients to make it regardless. I opted to try El Tinto Sour this time, which does feel like a mix of a whisky sour and tinto de verano, just poor sour than sweet. I actually thought mine was too sour so would have preferred more balance. I was originally planning on getting the regular churros with the cup of hot chocolate but the filled churros were calling to me. I tried the dulce de leche and the raspberry vanilla cream. The raspberry one was nice, tart and not too sweet but the dulce de leche churro was the clear winner - indulgent and satisfying in the best way. I noticed upon leaving that they have Happy Hour, weekdays between 3-6pm. I appreciate an early happy hour giving flexibility for a late lunch / early dinner. The patatas came out pretty quickly within ten minutes but our drinks took......45 minutes. We went on a Friday evening to taste the churro plate and spinach empanada. We received the empanada after 10 minutes of ordering. After 25 minutes, I wanted to check with the waitress on the status of churro plate and she mentioned it usually takes 25 to 30 minutes to get the churros to table after ordering. The people that came in after us were all served and I decided to check again. So the waitress returns with a muffin mentioning it's taking some time to get the churros ready. Yikes. I really wanted to like this place, but there is a lot lacking and I did give really candid feedback to the wait staff. Starting with the good, this place is pretty. As soon as you walk in, it's open and airy. Lots of windows letting in a lot of light. It is a bit loud and echoey, so you'll have to raise your volume a bit. There is a small parking lot available. The food, on the other hand, had its ups and downs. The beef empanada was delicious and packed with flavor. For $12, it is a tiny portion though. The calamari was nothing to brag about; it's your standard fried squid with a side of aioli. The Spanish omelette was a heftier portion and I appreciated the side of toast. It was fluffy and filling. It went downhill with the baguettes. All the baguettes were too toasted, meaning they were rock hard and difficult to bite into. The salmon and cream cheese just tasted like your run-of-the-mill lox bagel. The pork tenderloin was overcooked, thick, and really tough. Not biteable at all, and no seasoning! Brie itself is very mild on flavor so the combination did nothing. The manchego with guava paste was a joke because they only gave us the manchego part and didn't bother informing us that the guava paste was all out. There was nothing special about the manchego. Overall, a so-so experience. Not sure I'd bother making the trek again for mediocre food. read more

You have to visit!! San Gines is from Madrid and we are so lucky to have one in Austin! I was hesitant on trying this given the low rating on Yelp (low for my definition is below 4 stars). But, it definitely deserves 5 stars!! I went during happy hour (everything on that menu is $7) and got to enjoy a variety of tapas plus their popular churros with warm chocolate. I've never had churros this thin and I loved the texture. Chocolate is also so silky and not too sweet-just how I like it. Croquetas are so good and probably my favorite tapas. Patatas bravas (potatoes) are so filling and I love their spicy margarita sauce. Slider looks normal but it's really delicious. Also got Belgian chocolate ice cream! The pastry we got (forgot what it's called, but you can see all the pastries at the order counter) was yummy! This surprisingly was the last thing to arrive but it's because they warmed it up. If you want your churros stuffed with Nutella or other toppings, they have those too but not with happy hour price. Sitting outdoors when the weather outside is nice is a must! They have indoor seating too. You wouldn't believe you're still in Austin. It's located in the back of the area so you cannot hear traffic much and the music that's being played is at the perfect level for good conversations. Didn't need a reservation and just walked in. You order and pay first. We got seated at a big white table and it was so relaxing. Service was spectacular as water and napkins were filled consistently. Every single dish, whether from the happy hour or main menu, was beautifully made and bursting with authentic Spanish flavor. We're currently sitting at San Gines in a little bit of shock lol. We figured we'd stop by for a *quick* churro + little snack.....we ended up waiting over an hour for 2 churros, the croquetas, and 2 drinks. The churros were yummy, the croquetas are super rich and a little hefty (definitely not a bad thing!), and the drink was okay. We had ordered 2 drinks, but the wait for the first one was so insane we just cancelled the 2nd one. I cannot get over the service. I'm not sure how this place is so inefficient with multiple food runners and multiple bartenders on top of the servers. It genuinely felt like it was the entire team's first day working at a restaurant. Don't get me wrong, everyone was so nice and trying their best...there just seemed to be so much confusion. Items we didn't order were delivered to our table, we saw some food runners walking around for a few *minutes* not being able to find the correct table, and there were multiple instances where we couldn't even find our server to ask for more water as we waited. It's such a shame because all the food we watched coming out looked so delicious and we would've loved to come back and try other items. I just can't justify returning. All waiters seem to encamp in the bar area-food & drinks take forever. Neighbor at next table to us had to get up to ask for bill. Asked for patatas they came with no garlic aioli just plain mayo and no brava sauce. Calamares fritos are ok but not amazing. The only thing I like from this place are the churros and hot chocolate. Bathrooms are disappointing too -very dirty! And soap bottle says BRANCH VINE MAINS tropical fruit and citrus scent but has been filled with a commercial inexpensive hand soap that smells like the one they have at a taco shop. I recently went back to San Gines with another friend, this time during the week instead of the weekend, and for the purpose of some WFH over coffee, breakfast, and churros. Parking was something I was initially nervous about, since the last time I visited it was a bit of a challenge. However, it looks like the restaurant has recently added several more dedicated spots. Combined with coming on a weekday, this made parking much easier. Both of us found spaces without any issue. We each ordered coffees, which came out quickly, and then both tried the croissant sandwich. This was surprisingly tasty. Definitely not something I've ever had in Spain (for context, I'm Spanish), but I love a good breakfast sandwich and enjoyed it. We also ordered churros (4 for $9) and asked for half sugar, half cinnamon sugar. Unfortunately, our order was forgotten, and after almost an hour we asked about it. An employee brought them right over (all cinnamon sugar, not half and half), but they were still delicious. We're flexible people, so it didn't bother us much. I want to give a special shoutout to the staff bussing tables and refilling water. They were incredibly attentive and kind. My water glass never got less than half full before it was topped up. Really impressive service! I was also happy to see that San Ginés offers free wifi (username: sangines2072, password: Trapote2), which was fast and reliable, making it a great place to WFH for a few hours. All in all, San Gines continues to be a charming spot with excellent coffee, food, and service. I went to San Ginés in Austin for brunch on a date and it was such a cute spot. The ambiance is cozy and charming, perfect for a date but still great for catching up with friends too. I had tea, and we split the waffles and huevos (we got the meat on the side). Everything was so good! The flavors were fresh and comforting, and the plate presentation was honestly adorable. I love when a place pays attention to those little details. And I have to mention the whipped cream on the waffles. It was so, so amazing you could tell it was fresh and homemade. Light, fluffy, not overly sweet, it completely made the dish. I loved it. The service was also incredible. Everyone was genuinely kind and welcoming, which made the whole experience feel even more special. They do have a small parking lot, I imagine it could be tricky during peak hours, so that's something to keep in mind. Overall, it's such a sweet little spot with lots of vegetarian options (which I really appreciated). I believe it's Madrid inspired cuisine, which makes it feel extra unique. I read some other reviews to make sure it wasn't just me. I've been to restaurants before where you order at the front and then go find a seat and they bring your food to you (Vic & Al's and Loro do it really well). I feel like this restaurant needs to work on their system a little. Staff didn't seem to adhere to this concept and we were able to have servers come to us to take our order so why do we need to order at the front too? Also, if we have to go to the front to order, please provide a place for us to gather plates, utensils, napkins. Due to this, it just felt like service was lacking, until the end, when our third server went the extra mile and put a candle on our dessert for our friend's birthday. There were bussers who didn't have the ability to place orders but instead took our plates and drinks away and grabbed the server when we needed them. We sat outside, which is a lovely space. There is a mix of comfy chairs and large tables for seating for 8 or 4. Inside seating looks more limited and for smaller groups with wooden tables and chairs as décor. Outside seating looks more cozy and is the better option weather pending. As for food and drinks we ordered off of the happy hour menu. Drinks are good, especially the pina pagana. The snacks were good and I recommend everything. We loved the churros! We also ordered the filled churros with dulce de leche and raspberry cream which was also good. This is my first time trying specifically tapas / Spanish food. Overall, our experience was great! The food was delicious, especially eggplant tapas and Spanish Octopus, these were my favorite. The eggplant tapas were savory yet sweet because of the honey drizzle, salmon tapas were very much similar to a lox bagel (but make it on bread), pork was my least favorite just because it was pre on a dry side. The Spanish Octopus was nice and tender, not chewy at all (!!!). I would definitely come back for it. Overall, menu is well priced and everything was very good. The beer options are very limited, unfortunately, but the wine selection was pretty good in my opinion. The outside was almost empty because it was hot outside during the day. The inside interior looked a little too sterile, I feel like this is a missed opportunity of expressing the vibrancy of Madrid. read more

I think this restaurant definitely deserves more stars! Came here right after Christmas and dining outdoors, the decorations remind me of modern European. We were served with churro and ice cream first. I liked that they served hot chocolate sauce with churro, and the Belgium chocolate ice cream is definitely up there - not too sweet! We ordered Croquetas, Patatas Bravas, and slider for our tapas and they were all delicious. I especially loved the slider, very juicy and the only complaint that I had was it's not big enough. Finished up with a cranberry pastry, it's a bit on the sweet side but I still enjoyed the layer of stuffing! Highly recommend to try it if you are in the area, great service with many indoor and outdoor seating. Parking could be a bit challenging but there are street parking available too. read more

Neat spot for hanging out/coffee. We got here on an afternoon. The weather was good so we sat outside. We ordered an iced latte (don't remember the name), Spanish hot chocolate and raspberry vanilla creme churros. Everything tasted good. To finish, we also got ice creams, in pumpkin and chocolate flavors. They were okay. I would recommend to check it once. read more
