Small local spot attached to a Mexican grocery with standard offerings ranging from desayunos (breakfast), almuerzo (lunch) and Platos fuertes (dinner meals). Prices are very reasonable. We got queso fundido ($4), 4 tacos at $2 each, 1 plate of fried plantains and agua horchata ($2.50). Everything was very good and served quickly. The pollo taco was more chicken tinga than cubed chicken. The beef was more ground beef than sliced carne asada. The carnitas taco was very good. All were served hot with two grilled tortillas, cilantro and onion. Chips and salsa were served as we sat. The horchata was my favorite - clearly homemade and not powder. I was looking for a place that was "kind of" between downtown and Harrison, to meet a friend. Upon arrival, I realized that one side is the restaurant and other side is a grocery store. The food was pretty "traditional Mexican restaurant in America" aka not great. When I want more traditional Mexican cuisine, I tend to lean more toward taquerias than restaurants. So, this taqueria was a huge disappointment. I only gave this restaurant one star bc there are just too many other options for Mexican food in Cincinnati to hold this one in high esteem. Also, I wouldn't recommend ordering alcohol here. We ordered margaritas but couldn't taste alcohol at all. We asked for another shot of tequila to add to our drinks. Our extra shots cost about $7 each, plus the price of the margaritas. I'm not sure if the restaurant was trying to supplement costs for not having many patrons but unfortunately, IT WASN'T WORTH IT!!!! So today my mom and I went to get lunch here to try it out. We arrived around 12pm and we were waiting for at least 5 mins and there weren't any customers. There was one woman who was grabbing ice but had her coat and hoodie up. We nicely asked if they were open. She said in Spanish, "yea". That's it. So we sat down and waited a couple more minutes to be served. She never greeted or said anything and just stood there. We said our order and left. Then another worker came around and they both were just talking and she was on her phone. We heard talking about what we had ordered but didn't hear exactly what was said. It was just quiet and awkward there. I went to the restroom and there was dead ROACH in the restroom. I wish I would've taken my phone and forgot to go back. We thought maybe the food would be okay.... It got worse because a few more minutes went by and the server got on a phone call on LOUD SPEAKER!!! She continued to talk on the phone on loud speaker the entire time. EVEN when SHE CAME GIVE US OUR FOOD. She never saw her wash her hands in between using her phone and handing our food. We were so SHOCKED because I can't imagine the amounts of germ and bacteria on her phone. We could still hear her entire phone conversations which just made us uncomfortable. The food was okay maybe like a 4/10 but it wasn't to die for. We both got the seafood soup. Everything was just MEH. The vibes were just weird and the server was not nice whatsoever. read more

My husband and I stopped in here for dinner tonight. The restaurant was empty and the TV was on so loud you could barely talk. When we were seated we asked the server if they had margaritas,he said yes and I asked if it came out of machine. He said, no we make them. We ordered two margaritas and a woman showed up at our table with two glasses of a frozen machine mix. It tasted very artificial and when we asked the server if they could not make a margarita he said they had no tequila. Man, I really wanted to give this place more stars. I've been driving by this place and there's always so many cars. I thought it was an indication of the food. Unfortunately, it was nit the case. I stopped in for dinner hoping to find authentic Mexican food on the west side as good as La Mexicana Restaurant in Newport, KY. Cancun is okay for some, but once you've had homemade tortilla chips/salsa along with a fresh Torta sandwich from La Mexicana it's hard to like anything else. I promise I do not know the owners or have have any vested interest in that restaurant. It's just really that good in my opinion and I was hoping to find a similar restaurant a little closer to my house. Unfortunately this place left me craving for Cancun, which is hard to do. The tortilla chips were from a bag and not warm. The salsa tasted and looked like tomato juice. Some of the food was okay but most of it didn't taste very fresh. I went here a few days back....If I could I wouldn't give this place any stars, the food was awful. Waiting forever for the food to come. when it did finally came out it was basically a plate of oil. Super delicious and authentic Mexican food! It's a small hole-in-the wall place connected to a little Mexican market full of obscure south-of-the-border products not easily found in Ohio. The food is traditional and straightforward with a simplicity which lets the excellent ingredients shine through. Their guacamole is far from the homogeneous paste that most Americans have grown accustomed to, but rather a chunky, savory, home style delight. Enchiladas, chimichangas, quesadillas, tamales, and all the usual Mexican fare are here, but with a no-nonsense, homemade style that's refreshing and unique in the area. They even serve Mexican coke to complete the picture. Try a quesadilla with avocado for a treat. The beans had an excellent texture and flavor, rather than the typical smooth, brown paste, and their in-house hot sauces are unique and flavorful. My husband and I are always in search of a Mexican restaurant in this city and have had a very hard time finding any that comes close to some of the delicious authentic food we were used to in other cities we have lived in. San Luis Grill had so much potential. The TV was tuned to soccer. There is a great little Mexican grocery attached and some of the menu was in spanish. Then the salsa came to the table. It tasted watered down with chicken broth and possibly fish sauce of some sort and lacked any spiciness that you would expect in a salsa. I ordered the Chimichanga with barbacoa meat and my husband ordered the fajitas. The meat was good in the chimichanga, that did not disappoint but the beans appeared as if they came out of a can and the rice was just overcooked. My husbands meal was the standard fajita offerings anywhere you go but lacked any type of seasoning to make them flavorful and tasty. There was no caramelization on the skillet from the vegetables that one would expect. The service was very good and friendly and fast which we do really appreciate however the search continues. read more

Generally if I am not impressed with a restaurant I don't go back. I feel compelled to warn others in this case. Most likely due to the severe stomach cramps I am enduring at the moment. The restaurant appeared deceptively normal at first. The horchatas were very tasty and our server was very nice. The menu was what you expect from an authentic Mexican restaurant. I ordered a seafood dish that was supposed to have prawns crab legs scallops and shrimp. What I was served was a mystery stinky soup. It contained prawns that were mushy and crab that was freezer burned. There was some form of grey fish and other interesting unidentifiable substances with pungent odors emanating from the bowl. My boyfriend ordered a chicken shrimp carne asada dish that was overcooked. The shrimp had the consistency of rubber and the carne looks like gristle. Needless to say we did not eat much. We drank our horchatas paid our bill and left. We will never return. read more

I'm pretty much done with Cancun forever at this point, and I no longer care how strong their margaritas are I can telll you. Also I don't give much care that Macho Rio Grande on Harrison Avenue is a cut above them for Americanized chain restaurants, particularly when I got one of their ribeye steaks with mashed potatoes and cheese plus mixed veggies, only to find it had nasty Kahlua sauce on it. Yuck and double yuck, excuse me while I dry hurl. Thanks, moving on to what's superb about San Luis- it's the soup! Trust me, you probably don't want the Menudo with stomach lining, nor hominy (unground grits to the layperson) and ham for their other selection. You want their beef broth base with big chunks of beef and even bigger veggies, plus fresh herbs and lime to throw in when it arrives simmering hot. The best real food soup available anywhere, compare it to ordinary minestrone swill at LaRosa's or The Olive Garden for example, which are tasty enough once in a while be literally processed industrial garbage food by comparison, and I know food from living with serious collegiate athletes and even a conditioning coach for several years recently. Of course you can also try the meal sized (and priced) soups at Columbian restaurants like Zona Vip near Springdale, or the Peruvian restaurant North of there, and there's another one called Lima Limon in Florence. But really these people have excellent beef vegetable soup, and if you're used to something like barley or crackers in your soup, just crumble some tortilla chips in there and you're set. Also their salsa is now greatly improved from my four-star review when they were first setting up, their margaritas and bar appear better stocked, and I sampled their queso with tortilla chips and it's now quite good too. Dishes like chorizo and eggs and tamales are superb, tortas that are hard to come by on the west side have unique pop and zest to the flavor, it's hard to over-emphasize what you're missing wasting your money at Cancun or Macho Rio Grande. My best advice for the management would be to put up a flatscreen for the long wall with just soccer playing but muted volume, and audio output to FM like at some gym clubs, as most people have smartphones with FM output these days, and put yellow subtitles at the top. Then put a small flatscreen on one of the narrower sides with a quality English language news broadcast from a Latino source if possible, otherwise BBC America, and again mute the audio and add clearly legible yellow subtitles and a small placard with the FM broadcast channel just like a gym. The watch your staff's favorite shows and movies in Spanish on the other screen for the most inclusive possible media options for everyone. My only other suggestion for the menu would be breakfast burritos, to switch to something like sweet potato oil for the deep fryer, and do away with the frozen seafood soup in favor of one or two chicken broth based soups.
