    Really tangy dill pickles!
    Alexis C.

This place felt like exactly where you want to be to get good Texas BBQ, right down to the charred pig butt on the carving board waiting to be chopped. My friend Jen, our resident Texan, had ordered food for an army so we got to taste a bunch of different stuff. The brisket was solid, flavorful and tender. The chicken skin was crisp and peppery, though the chicken was a little oily. The winner of the meats was definitely the hatch gouda sausage. It was spicy, the tubing snapped when cut, and the Gouda was smoky and oozed out when a piece was cut. I also very much liked the BBQ sauce, it was not too thick or sweet, but instead had a little kick of spice and vinegar and complimented the brisket so well. For sides we got mac and cheese, meaty cabbage, and potato salad (and pickles and onions that came with). All were solid, none totally stood out, but would eat any of them again. I generally prefer a slightly less mayo forward potato salad, but there was enough mustard to balance. The banana pudding and peach cobbler were both worth ordering. I'm not a huge dessert person but with a less sweet BBQ I appreciated a little sugary bite at the end and both satisfied!

All this plus the drinks you can't see only cost $36 w/tax b4 tip! 1/2 chicken, sausage, .25lb brisket, 2 sides 2 desserts 2 sodas 27APR24

He'd requested Yalla Burger south of the mall for dinner but they'd already closed early, so we turned back the way we came and settled in here. I tease Mr R because there are so many good options here but he wouldn't know because he only ever chooses the chopped beef sandwich. As remedy I ordered everything but his beverage and friend, it was a lot. Half chicken Sausage link (were out of hatch chile links) 1/4 brisket for later Potato salad Pinto beans Mexican coke Frostie Bread pudding Peach cobbler The onion/pickle handful, sauce and bread slices were included. You don't need much sauce here because the meat's done right. Friend, the kind person behind the register did us the favor of making a combo where he could since we got two sides and it cost us UNDER THIRTY-SEVEN MODERN AMERICAN DOLLARS for this proper absolute feast for two. After tax! I know beef's expensive but I still got 1/4lb and this was...wow, it was a lot of food! And it was all good! Didn't even have room to taste the desserts until later that night, and they were GREAT. They proved a nice indulgent breakfast in the morning and each of them were well executed. Mr R is convinced the bread pudding tasted a tad smoky and he would like if he could get it that way all the time from now on. Friendly staff, clean dining room, calm atmosphere, plenty of parking space for an early weekend dinner. I still say this place is the best for your BBQ dollar in town.

We haven't been here in several months because we hate the traffic on I-35. Nonetheless, we ventured to San Marcos today because the traffic wasn't too bad. San Marcos BBQ always has some best smoked meats in Central Texas. Their rub is a simple blend that lets the flavor of the meats to come out. Today was our lucky day because they had their pork ribs listed at $10 per pound. We ordered a pound to go so that we could enjoy them at a later date. They freeze really well and are just as tasty when you steam them hot. For lunch, I ordered the 1/4 chicken (white meat), sausage, pinto beans, and coleslaw. The chicken had a great smoke flavor and seasoned nicely. The sausage was a good size and had great flavor. I'm not sure how they cook their pinto beans, but they were extremely flavorful with a hint of smoke. The coleslaw was adequate. If you like bbq sauce like I do, they have two to select from. One is regular and the other is spicy. The spicy one has a hint of mustard. I like mixing the two to get a unique flavor. Overall, go try this place if you're in the area. You will love it.

Everything you'd expect from a Texas bbq spot, but nothing to go out of your way for. My friends liked the other meats more than their brisket. I was hesitant to get the macaroni and cheese based on mixed reviews, but it was a decent plain kids' comfort food kind of mac. The seven layer bar was my favorite part of the meal!

    The Rudy

All this food for $40!!! Feeds 2-3 people, we got the Rudy and it also comes with dessert, we got the banana pudding, the best BBQ in San Marcos, and we have tried Terry Blacks... the staff is super friendly and gave us samples, the BBQ sauce is tangy and spicy, definitely coming back, great service and great food, keep it up guys!

Amazing... Texas BBQ at unbeatable prices! The brisket is smoky and tender, ribs fall off the bone and the sides braised cabbage and mac & cheese are delicious. Friendly staff and a great vibe make it a must-visit. I'll be back!

excellent..... lets just start with that. I had ribs and brisket and both were amazing. very meaty ribs. the brisket was so tasty and it didn't have hardly any fat on it, yet it was tender and falling apart. i had both cole slaw and cabbage and would highly recommend both! we decided to try this place just passing through and boy i'm glad we did. both my kids had the bbq pork sandwich and loved it. the service was quick, but it wasn't a busy time. just like a good BBQ place should be. nothing fancy, just clean, friendly and the focus is on delivering the best BBQ possible.

Their $9 whole smoked chicken on Wednesdays is definitely a steal, and the Family Pack #1 is a great value for feeding a group (which is what we were doing). It's no surprise that my husband and our family were impressed with their BBQ - their reputation for being one of the best in the area speaks for itself. Brisket DAMN soo good. There was no meat we didn't try and they all were excellent. My daughter thought the Turkey would be dry but, nope...#delicious. If you're ever in San Marcos or if you have friends visiting who want to experience excellent Texas BBQ, I highly recommend checking out San Marcos BBQ. You won't be disappointed! We never are.

Thank you SM BBQ This was exactly what I wanted from my first trip to Texas. A random award winning bbq joint in what at least felt like a small town. This place was great. The staff was very friendly, the food was fantastic, it was clean and I highly recommended you ask for the spicy bbq sauce. Thank you for making my first trip from Texas that much more special

Notice heo small the chicken is. But they're generous with the sides. Both the coleslaw and pinto beans were very good.

I ordered the brisket and chicken combo with pinto beans and coleslaw and added a sausage ring. Girl at the counter asked me if I wanted white meat or dark meat. I told her I wanted mixed and she rudely told me that I can't have mixed so I chose white meat. I got sweet tea as my beverage of choice. I went to get my fork, knife, straw and sauces which are served in old ketchup and mustard bottles kinda like at Two Bros. BBQ in San Antonio. My tray of food arrived quickly. I dug into my beans then coleslaw. Both were very good. They are generous with the sides portions. My chicken was small and dry. The sausage was good and spicy and didn't really need sauce. The brisket had a good smoke ring to it. I got banana pudding for dessert and it was very good. To sum it all up,the food was OK and was better than Salt Lick in Driftwood and Louie's in Buda. But it couldn't come close to Black's in Lockhart.

Family meal no. 1 - brisket, links, 2 sides and a gallon of sweet tea.

We wanted to try a little bit of almost Everything and that's exactly what we did. For sides we got, potato salad, mashed potatoes, creamed corn and macaroni. For meats we got, brisket (fatty pieces preferred) turkey, Jalapeño cheddar sausage and ribs. Everything was stellar, but the star of the show was the brisket! Probably some of the best brisket I've had in a long time. The bark was perfect and the fat had such a nice juicy flavor filled bite. I ordered 1 lb of lean brisket, and "lean" apparently translated to "dehydrated museum artifact." Dry enough that I'm pretty sure it absorbed moisture from the table. We actually ended up tossing most of it, which physically hurts me to say about Texas BBQ. The mac and cheese? I mean this respectfully... maybe let that item retire with dignity. Before everyone grabs their pitchforks, the Baby Back Ribs were REALLY good. Tender, flavorful, and absolutely part of the meal. The cream corn was solid too. And then there was the potato salad... whoever made that deserves a raise. Dill flavor, red skin potatoes, little carrot pieces, dill pickle tang and easily one of the best potato salads I've had anywhere. I normally take two bites of potato salad out of obligation. This one I kept going back for like it owed me money.

We got there Thursday a little after 4pm opening in a downpour so there wasn't a line. The day's special--written on a white board--was an alligator po boy and Mr R had never had alligator so that was easy. For myself I chose the soulful catfish bites from the menu at the window (he posts the week's menu on FB, although I didn't see sides mentioned). As sides I chose sweet potato fries and okra, for dessert the blueberry cobbler. One lemonade and one sweet tea. Lord, it was tasty. The gator po boy had a soft white sub roll, untoasted, with iceberg, pickles and tomatoes. The gator chunks were about 1.5 to 2x the size of chicken nuggets, with a perfect crunchy coating and not greasy. The meat was not dry, the flavor was good. The catfish bites were a little smaller than the gator chunks, and with the most perfectly seasoned, crisp, ungreasy, cornmeal coating. The fish was cooked perfectly and couldn't have been hotter/fresher out of the kitchen. The sweet potato fries were lightly salted, cooked expertly and came in a generous pile. The okra came in a light batter and tasted so fresh and green--Mr R fell in love with them (he'd only had okra boiled/wet before), but also blasphemed them with ketchup because he's a terrible person. Each plate came with ketchup, tartar sauce (more like mayo, really), and hot sauce. Two packets of each condiment for each plate which was more than we used. The cobbler. OH! The cobbler. He'd upsized it as a kindness for us, and I still don't know how exactly he made the sugary crunchy cobbler bits as half of them *still* had powerful crunch this morning after sitting overnight. The blueberry part was lovely jammy sticky but not over sweet. It was a wonderful dessert yesterday and a fabulous breakfast this morning. My single point of retraction? The now-moved-on LeStourgeon had the superior po boy set up (in my nascent opinion) with toasty bread and more produce to include romaine, onion and avocado plus a schmear of mayo. That's it, outside of that this meal was perfection. It's not cheap, the wait's never been excessive, it is WORTH it. Forgot to mention he also had a table/chairs set up under a tent which is a nice alternative to eating in your car if you can't wait to get home with good food.

They also have three unique sauces worth calling out: a spicy mayo (pretty standard, but rich and delicious), a curry mayo (strong curry flavor in every bite -- not for everyone, but I loved it), and a wasabi mayo (never had this before, and it was honestly great -- strong wasabi flavor that paired really well with my dish). Chicken Teriyaki Bento ($10.50, 7/10) -Comes with a side of rice and ginger, both of which paired really well with the wasabi mayo -Portion size was relatively large -- left me full, but really only enough for one person -Topped with a crunchy garlic/panko crunch that paired nicely with the chicken -Teriyaki sauce on top was a little too salty; would've been better with less salt -They give you a water bottle on the side, which was much appreciated since everything ran on the salty side Overall, a great fast casual spot to hang out with friends and get good food at a good price.
