Tried San Miguel Cafe for the first time in Falls Church, VA. I ordered the Plato Tipico and Carne Guisada. The Plato Tipico came with a pupusa, pork tamale, grilled steak and rice and beans. The Carne Guisada was filled with beef, carrots, potatoes and squash served with rice. Personally I really enjoyed the Plato Tipico with the variety of things it offered and how tasty all elements were. The rice and beans were the best rice and beans I have ever had. The San Miguel Cafe has been around since 2006, offering Salvadorean/Honduran/Peruvian/Mexican breakfast, lunch, and dinner eats, as well as daily buffets and catering services. They also have a bakery located in the restaurant section and an attached grocery store next door. The hubs and I came here to check out their lunch buffet, and we were pretty impressed with the large spread. I really enjoyed their giant taquitos, the carne asada strips to make your own tacos (tortillas are heated and put inside a little container to keep it warm), plantains, the fried chicken wings, the chicken enchilada, and the chunky guacamole. The star of the buffet, however, was the super delicious Sopa de Res - beautiful beefy broth that was super flavorful (even contained bones!) and tender meat and veggies. Staff were friendly, and there is an employee that mans the stations to make sure that everything is wiped down; there are some that she serves, as they are on the other side of the table with cords and such (such as pupusas). The place was super packed, and it seemed like a huge favorite for the locals; price was reasonable with the variety of food that you receive. Plenty of tables, but the place does get filled up quickly on the weekends. I have a soft spot for San Miguel Cafe. What they do is good when it comes to their food. I enjoy their Pupusas and I can't get enough of their Baleadas. They're some of the bigger sized Baleadas I have seen in the area. I also enjoy their Plato Típico, it's a good mix of flavors. I always get an order of their Fried Plantains with Beans and Crema. This is the ONLY Mexican buffet that I know of...and for that reason I'll give it 5 stars. This weekday lunch buffet from 11-3pm for $10 started only a month or two ago. Even though the sign does say "Latin" the employees assure me it's really mostly Mexican cuisine. I think they did this to compete with the guys next door (Mirage). Anyway, it's not like Mexican food is all that expensive or mysterious to begin with....that you need a buffet to sample little pieces of this and that, but it's still pretty damn cool. The food was good and the place is very spacious. If you come for the buffet, just grab a plate, load up, sit down, eat up, and pay out at the end. It's just plastic forks and foam plates. The buffet had a good variety of foods (about 15 or so items) including made to order fajitas. The guy behind the buffet table was very helpful but only when I could understand him. I was so embarrassed to have to ask him to repeat himself 3 or 4 times. Guy probably thought I was deaf or something, but his accent was just too strong. In fact, I think I was the only non-Mexican or Latino there. This was definitely outside my comfort zone but I really liked the experience. I look forward to trying this place out again. After being cooped up in the house all day, my wife and I are now at San Miguel in Falls Church. The place is very spacious and apparently they have been around for 13 years. Today is my first time trying their food. I ordered the chicken quesadilla and two cheese and pork pupusas. To be perfectly honest, the chicken and pork pupusas were the best. The pupusas have more flavor than the chicken quesadilla. I like the decorations around the store, but the El Salvador picture is my favorite. The prices are very reasonable too. The only thing I did not like was the mens bathroom. Water was all over the floor and the sink had a slow water drain. Would I come back here on my own. The answer is yes. I waited a long time to come to this lunch buffet spot but eventually I brought wifey along and no this is the second time that we have had the pleasure of sinking our teeth into every Salvadorian/Latin dish that they serve. It is not exactly a hole in the wall but it is not about the presentation, the quality of food here especially for the price is some of the best in the DMV. They have 10 entrees, some favorites were the beef in the red sauce and beef in the green cilantroey sauce. Their squash was superb, covered in pupusa white cheese. I've been 3 times for the lunch buffet. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Do remember that it is not full-service so you have to go to the counter to pay first and then get water or beverages each time. The meats and stews are tasty and flavorful. I am a fan of "Bizarre Foods" so I like trying new and funky fare. The creole style tripe was good on two visits. It's nice and tender (which means they took the time to cook it for a long time). There was one visit where the tripe smelled a little off. My two complaints are minor: The selection has not changed in my three visits and some of the items aren't as warm as they should be. Not very flavorful but it is somewhat tasty since they pore a sauce and melted cheese on top.
