I have taken my cars there for many years and rated the business excellent. On the last two occasions, I was first somewhat disappointed (suspicious) and then very disappointed (because of gross incompetency). The first involved a problem with my son's car which he drove down from OR. A writing pen somehow fell into a vent opening and the AC abruptly stopped working. Took it to the shop, explained the problem and the next day, I was informed that the compressor had failed. This was suspicious but we paid for the repair and my son returned to OR without issue. The owner was absent and so I had to deal with his son. I remained suspicious about this "fix" because I was confident that the problem was something like a jammed louver (caused by the that missing writing utensil) directed cold air away from the passenger compartment. In the end, I decided that the issue was simply a weird and rare coincidence. Second issue happened about a year later. My other son lives in the area and has a 2007 Honda Civic with a manual transmission. He complained that, when the car was in the higher gears, it would "pop out of gear" and he would have to hold the gear manually to drive the car. Took the car to San Ramon Auto and, again, the father was absent and I had to deal with his son. The next day, the son tells me the car needs a new clutch. I know my way around cars and told my son I was surprised because what he was experiencing did not feel like a "clutch problem" to me. My son balked at the repair cost but I told him eventually he would need the clutch replaced if he wished to continue driving that car which he did). Two or three weeks later after the car was supposedly repaired, the same problem emerges. Took the car to another independent shop and we were told that the transmission fluid levels "were not in spec" !!! Subsequently, fluids were returned to "specs level" and we returned to San Ramon Auto with the invoice for the fluid fill and confronted the son. Reluctantly, he had to admit that he "... must have forgotten...." to fill the transmission after replacing the clutch! Because the "gear-shift pop-out" problem reemerged after the repair, I have to conclude that the kid did not even do a routine check of the drive chain fluid levels while diagnosing the problem. Moreover, it would seem that a"bad clutch" was not really the problem and a simple "topping off" of the transmission fluid would have returned he car to drivability. In any case the car works just fine but I remain unsure how much damage might have been driving the car around with the fluid levels "out of Spec". Lesson learned. Even after an excellent history with Dan, to me, it appears that his son is grossly incompetent and he will ruin his father's business. I can no longer trust the repairs made at that business with the kid running around the shop. Sadly, because of that I cannot recommend this shop any longer and I myself will not be returning. read more

I called around bunch of places on yelp to find a reasonable quote for replacing my brake pads. At my last oil change, it was recommended to get my brake pads replace since they were pretty worn out. I felt like it was still safe to use my car so I didn't rush to get them replace yet and wanted to call around to get quotes. When I called this place, no one answered so I left a message. Dan called me back the same day and left a detailed voicemail. I requested for cost of brake pads. Although he did quote me for it, he offered to provide me with a free inspection to see if I needed to replace everything. I made an appointment for an inspection and surprisedly, he says there's definitely time left and doesn't need replacing yet. I was amazed by his honesty. He also gave a printout so he was pretty organized. The location can be tricky to find but there's definitely signs on the street so it's not too bad. His honesty truly won my over and I plan on returning to get some work done when needed. read more

I recently moved to San Ramon and am looking for a good repair shop as I have 2 cars and a truck and I'm super busy and it seems there is always something needing to be fixed or upgraded on one of my vehicles. When I called I politely said I needed to quote for a fuel injection replacement. Dan then with a condescending attitude asked for what kind of vehicle. If this crappy little car wasn't a company car I would drive it right off a cliff! For almost over a year I have had problems with my headlights. One or the other kept going out. Then one day about March of this year I noticed that my drivers side parking light (the yellow one) wasn't working. The little round bulb was black on the bottom and melted off and rolling around in the light fixture. Yes, black burned and melted off. Great job Chevy!!!! About summer this year the car started shaking really bad when I braked. I could feel it somewhere in the middle of the car. My company uses this repair shop for all of their fleet vehicles. They were very accommodating and totally fixed my bad routers that were shaking when I braked. The light on the other hand turned out to be a labor of love and it took a few days to get the appropriate light in. But by Friday I had my hoopty back in action. I have two shiny new lights that are sparkling and bright. I have access to some of the best mechanics in the Bay Area, (married to one hello!!!) and I am proud to add this company to my recommendation list. Nice people, but was upset about the fact that I was quoted a price of about $600 for my repairs, and when I went to pick up my car I was told the cost was just over $1000. When I questioned it, they said there were extra costs due to added issues they found. The thing is, they never called me to inform me of the extra costs. They just went ahead and did the extra work without informing me. Nice people, but to be charged more than 50% of the expected cost with no notice just left a really bad taste in my mouth. Beware this company. They seem like nice guys until things don't go according to plan. The day after they changed my oil, the skid pad/cover under the engine of our Honda partially came loose while driving on the freeway, and immediately crumpled under the car, causing a loud screeching sound as the partially torn metal cover scraped along the freeway. This bottom cover has to be removed to perform an oil change. The road was completely clear that day, with no visible objects that the car could have hit. I brought the car back to the shop. But they refused to take any responsibility for what occurred, telling me that it was purely coincidental, even though they had just removed and reinstalled this plate under the car the day before. They told me that I must have hit something large on the road which ripped off the cover, even though I didn't see anything at all, and the road was completely clear. Even if something small hit the bottom of the car, the cover would have had to be loose and poorly fastened to begin with for it to get torn off and crumpled below the car. I've asked several mechanics and they all say that the cover was likely not securely fastened after the oil change. I tried to be polite and offered to share responsibility with the shop, but they declined, and charged me $400+ for a new cover (even though I later found out that the part only costs $150 from multiple different vendors). They even had the nerve to write "ran over something on the road" on my invoice. Very dishonest and disappointing. read more

I recently had to replace my battery and later found out my alternator went out while driving on the freeway. My car shut down and I was able to limp into a gas station, where I called San Ramon Auto Repair in dire need of repair. This was the first place I called and Dan answered. He immediately gave me an extremely reasonable price and upon towing my vehicle to this shop, he already had the alternator waiting. He recharged my battery, replaced the alternator, and I was back on the road in no time. read more

I had called today and was looking for a part, I have no clue who to call or where to find parts for my car, so I called around. I found San Ramon Auto Repair, with just the name I couldn't have known that they did not carry parts, so I called anyway. When they answered (not sure who I spoke with), he wasn't clear with what he said so I assumed he was just answering, so I asked if he had a part in stock. He replied extremely rudely with "Can you hold on". When he got back to the phone he had a rude tone and asked what I needed. Once again asked for a certain part. He seemed rushed and i'm sure was busy with whatever was going on in the store itself, but gave him no reason to respond with such a rude tone "I dont carry parts here, call somewhere else like Monument". I stayed happy and nice and told him thank you and he hung up on me without saying anything else. Will never go there to get my car fixed just because of the terrible customer service over the phone. I understand it's probably annoying getting calls from people who don't know what they are talking about with cars, but not everyone works at a repair shop and knows things about cars. They really need to work on focusing on the customer on the phone as well. Pretty disappointed because looking at the reviews they seem to do a pretty damn good job. But now I wont be going there because of the attitude I got over the phone! read more

I have been having problems with Walmart changing my oil and then having the engine smoke and smell like oil for at least a week after the oil change (See my Walmart review.) So, I was in search of a new place to take my Legacy for oil changes and routine maintenance. I was totally pleased with the service, and a $25 oil change (I had a Valpak coupon) didn't hurt either! :D The employees are very knowledgeable, courteous and professional. They listened to my concerns about the smoking and the smell, and clearly explained why it was happening, and how to prevent it. They also took the time and effort to make sure that it didn't happen this time. (When I drove home, there was absolutely no smoking, and no smell!) The entire process took 45 minutes from the time I showed up to the time I drove out of the parking lot. They were efficient and did quality work for a good price. After a quick Google search I found San Ramon Auto Repair, and specifically Chad. I dropped the car off in the morning and within a few hours Chad provided a comprehensive estimate to change my brake rotors and pads, rotate the tires and change the oil. The price seemed fair and I told Chad to proceed with the repairs. I then asked him to take a look at the AC and let me know his thoughts on why it may not be blowing cold. Chad called back a few hours later had made all of the repairs and even fixed my AC issue at no extra cost. The car was ready to be picked up whenever I liked. He even offered to stay open late so I could pick it up the same night! I am not a car guy and barely know where the gas goes so am very apprehensive when it comes to car repairs. For the amount of work San Ramon Auto Repair got done in just a few hours for less than $400, I know I got a good deal! read more

I do not usually write a review but in this case I feel I need to. A few month ago I had my Honda Pilot serviced. Dan recommended to change the timing belt. The pilot had over 200 K miles. Right after the replacement I found that the transmission was rough. It was not smooth before this time it was more so. I was a little suspicious, maybe something bad was done. To make the story short, I learned that the problem is normal with the age of the Pilot. When I brought the car to the garage, Dan recommended a transmission fluid that sounded very interesting. He charged a little, however I did not even have enough cash to pay the little charge. He said it is OK and took w little that I had.. After the fluid change, the transmission did not seem to show any marked improvement. Dan said drive over the weekend, and there is a chance it may be better. HE IS RIGHT. It has been almost six month. Transmission performs pretty good. I am almost compelled to write this review because these days it is not easy to find a person like Dan. No the transmission is not fixed. But if you read the whole story, you may understand why Dan is unusal. Unusually good. Dan is easy going. And I think he knows a ton of stuff on automobile. If you live in Danville, San Ramon, Alamo, Dublin, etc,, try him. You may find a luck. read more

I took my car in for diagnostics (Check Engine Light was on and sometimes stalls) and they guaranteed me they knew what was causing the problem (12 months/12,000 mi). They said it would be done by the end of the next day. I never heard from them so I called the day after it was supposed to be done. That's when they told me that what they'd done (valve adjustment) hadn't fixed the problem, and they had already done more work trying to figure out what was wrong. I felt like they were treating my car as an experiment so the next time it happend to a similar car, they would already have it figured out. They didn't bother to call me or get authorization about performing additional services and adding them to my bill. When my car was finally ready, the Power Steering was making a constant whining noise and screeched when I turned the wheel. (The Power Steering had been completely normal when I dropped the car off.) They said I needed a new Power Steering Pump and Reservoir. After doing a bit of research on the power steering system for my car, I called on the next Monday to discuss the power steering and left a message asking for them to call me. I called again on Tuesday and left another message. I called again on Wednesday and left another message. After becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of communication, I just went in person since they wouldn't return my calls.** I specifically asked if it could just need a new O-ring or a clamp tightened that was letting air into the system.** Dan assured me they already checked that, and it definitely needed a whole new pump. I decided to take it to the Honda dealership and they diagnosed that it only needed a new O-ring and the pump was fine (a difference in about 600 dollars in price). In conclusion: Feel free to take your car here as Dan and Chad were friendly enough, but I feel like the initial communication about the diagnostics of the car was gundecked (diagnosed without really checking) and the communication about the price and further work on the car left *A LOT* to be desired. Also, the power steering pump was just a flat out lie. The dealership diagnosed just an o-ring was letting air into the power steering system. San Ramon Auto Repair assured me that they checked the O-ring and I needed the whole pump. This shows either a lack of skill or a lack of honesty. This place might be good for an oil change, but watch out afterwards. read more

Took my car in for routine maintenance to the Toyota dealer and was told that I needed a new power steering rack for $1300 due to a leak, among many other things. I callled San Ramon Auto Repair to get a quote for comparison purposes, and Dan suggested that I bring the car in for a second opinion. Low and behold, Dan tells me that everything he sees is completely normal and I do not need to replace the rack. He took the time to explain the mechanics of the part and how everything works as well as why Toyota may have suggested the replacement but why I in fact don't need it. Extremely professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. I will definitely be taking my car to Dan moving forward. read more
