BEST AUTO SERVICE SHOP IN THE EAST BAY, HERE'S WHY: Last year of Oct, 31 2020. My 4Runner's Transfercase and Driveshaft both failed catastrophically on 580-W. Called AAA, and they the tow truck driver suggested the best place to go was, you guessed it. "Automotive Consultants" in Dublin, CA. After having my car towed there, they called the next day to help me figure out what exactly needed to be done to the 4Runner. After giving me estimates, and as time went on. I wen't to the shop and checked on the car to see how well they made progress! I was surprised how they were able to clearly show me and take the time to explain what happened to the original parts that failed. It took at least 3 weeks to get it serviced because of some delays in shipment, which is very understandable and was in no rush. The 4Runner ran great for roughly 5 months. Flash Forward to Apr, 16. Took my car back in again for transmission repair because its been showing signs that its slipping gears and etc... I am also currently having them do a new power steering rack and a rear-diff service. Rick took his time to tell me all about warranties, used and remanufactured tranny's and, transmissions from the original dealer. After all, I chose to go with a transmission ordered from the original dealer since it has 1 year (Unlimited mile warranty). Best option even though it would cost more, I would think its worth it, despite the fact its 4Runner and they last a very long time! - Overall, 5-STARS for this place. After my regular mechanic closed shop I was at a loss for reliable work at a reasonable price. I was referred to Rick at Automotive Consultants by a long time limo customer and previous auto sales customer of mine. I'm particular as I was in the car business over 31 years and 'wrenched' on car since I was 16. I know the difference between good work and bad. I took my 2005, 344,800 miles Lincoln Town Car limousine sedan to Rick for a squeaky squeak on the left front of my car. At first he thought it might have been a bad (old) ball joint. I figured I'd be looking at around $400 plus with alignment. When Rick called me up with the diagnosis of upper and lower control arms along with the ball joing it turned out to be over $1,100 hundred bucks between parts and labor. I almost chocked until I drove the car away. My front end was tight and the steering was accurate. The front end alignment was best alignment I've ever had on a car. For the first time since the 29,600 miles I bought the car it tracks straight and true and the front is quiet. no shakes, no rattles and no...squeaky-squeak. This is my service car, I drive customers. What price can you put on safety and people's lives? In this situation I have confidence my old Lincoln will get my people to where they're going without worrying about the front end being a safety issue. Excellent work! read more

I snapped a steering rod on my truck and had it towed to this place, Rick helped me get my truck back on the road. It took them longer than I anticipated, but I guess there were complications. I was referred to Automotive Consultants by America's Tire in Dublin after they broke a lug nut stud while trying to perform a tire rotation, as they apparently have some kind of "arrangement" between shops. When I called to make an appointment, I explained to the woman that I had to be at work at 0800 & would need to arrange a ride, that I could not just leave the car there indefinitely. I called back a second time to ask if they could not order the necessary part ahead of time & have it ready to go, but she was non-committal and said they wouldn't know what they were dealing with until they got the wheel off and would have to look for the piece and a back, etc. She said if I left the keys in the night drop, they would be done with the car by noon. At 1139, I received a text from Rick stating, "you need some other service, call when you can." When I called, he said he got the wheel off and my brake pads could be replaced and that I could also use an oil change. Not sure how he determined I needed an oil change by pulling a wheel off the car, but since I was not interested in the upsell, I asked him to simply replace the broken lug nut stud and rotate the tires, as per the work order, and to call when he was done. By 1400, since I still had not heard back from Rick, I called the shop yet again & asked when I could pick the car up. His response? "You can pick it up right now." Cool. Got a ride down to the shop and waited quite awhile for him to retrieve the key from the office. He handed it to me without a word, along with the work order from America's Tire. Fast forward 2 days, when I just a bad taste in my mouth about the whole experience and finally went over to have a peek at the front wheel...only to see the same broken piece! Not only did Automotive Consultants not do the work that I brought my car to them to do, but they didn't even *say a word* to me about any of it when I picked up the car. I called America's Tire in Dublin and spoke to the manager, who set me up with the repair shop that their San Ramon store uses, but WOW. It's a bad look for a 5-star business like America's Tire to be associated with a place like Automotive Consultants. I guess since I wasn't interested in writing a blank check for a brake job, an oil change, and whatever nonsense they could come up with, they decided to not even do the work I brought the car in for in the first place. Now, instead of having a positive interaction and maybe even finding an automotive shop that I could trust with my car, I have to cuss the place out every time I drive by...which is a lot cuz I work in Dublin!! Im never going back to this shop for an alignment. The first time I got my car aligned, took my car for a drive in the freeway the steering wheel was a little off and when I try to straighten the wheel it wheel pull to the left and all my tire pressure was low below 30psi.. only 1 was above at 32psi.. I went back and complained to Rick.. He's a nice guy but you can't make an excuse saying "oh your tire pressure gage you use is broken" and the second time he fixed it.. it was still off.. and I had to drive my car to las vegas with a bad alignment.. I wanted to being back my girl car back to their shop and complained the same prob but I didn't wanna waste my time hearing same excuses again.. Im never going back here again.. I just wasted my money for that alignment.. and that was $50 each.. that's probably why its cheap because its some boo boo work.. read more

This place is an absolute joke. Called and asked to book my Mini in for a tyre check and alignment. The receptionist asked me for the make and model of my car and told me they could happily offer service. Firstly when I got there there were already 3 people waiting 15 mins past when they were told to drop their cars off. Staff were inside the office but weren't unlocking the office doors. Same experience when collecting my car. On collection, the same receptionist was sent to collect my payment. Handed me a piece of paper and tried to take my card. I asked her to walk me through the measurements I was seeing. On pressing her she told me they'd aligned my car but not fully, she wasn't sure why but took a guess. I asked for factual information vs guesswork. She continued to give me information she 'wasn't sure of' until I told her I wasn't 'sure' what I was paying for, after which she hurriedly finally asked a mechanic to talk to me. Mechanic confirmed that they couldn't fully align my car because their machine wasn't able to work with the Mini due to my bolt types. Something they knew they wouldn't be able to do right at the beginning when they booked me in and asked for the make and model of my car. When I asked about the tire report -the guy looked out at my car and said 'they're fine'. I asked for actual measurements which he couldn't supply. I asked how much longer I could drive on the tires and he looked at the car and ball-parked a very round figure on the spot. So my assumption is they didn't bother to check the tires since they handed me measurements on alignment but not tires. Here are 2 ways this could have gone: A) Telling me right at the beginning that due to my car model, they might not be able to fully align my car and it might save me money to go directly to Mini. B) Have someone who knew what they were talking about meet me on collection of my car or even call me before they started working and explain factually why they couldn't do a full alignment and had not checked tires and give me the option to go elsewhere or tell me they would not charge me full price since the problem wasn't fully resolved and what I had asked for hadn't been done. These guys have an agreement with America's Tire where you get a % off if you're referred over, but the cost is still high and clearly it's a wham bam, in n out, easy money for them, no concern for the customer or the car. On their attitude, lack of service and lack of transparency I do NOT recommend them. read more

i see what's going on here! my family used them and it was just ok service. they took a while to get back to us about the car and what the problem was. it seems after you use automotive consultants they ask you to write a review on yelp and if you do that they will give you a discount the next time you use them. well i wrote the review and we did get the discount of $25. still nothing spectacular the second time around but i don't feel it's fair to see all these 5 star reviews for a place that gives discounts for good reviews, it's very misleading. originally i found this place and suggested it because of all the great reviews but now i know what's really going on. you just never know these days so just be careful. we will continue to look elsewhere for a more honest place with better service. read more

Hmm...had a lot of hope for this place after reading the reviews. Have a few bad experience however. Brought the wife's car with a fluid leak and said it might be something with seals, had the seals replaced and went to pick up the car and it wouldn't start. Eventually had to get a new fuel pump to start the car. The car still leaks.... Brought my car in and needed a new radiator as mine cracked, they fixed it but put the wrong type of antifreeze back in. Think this would be easy to spot as one is green and one is red but..... Then brought it in to get brakes done and after leaving heard a weird grinding noise in the front. One day I got off of 580 and turned left and the car fell right on the tired. Had to have it towed back to this place and they said a bolt broke. Hmmmm....Just a lot of weird thing. read more

This is odd, as I thought that I wrote a review on this repair shop last year (it would have been a good review, too). Not sure whether my memory is bad or whether Yelp disappeared the review. In any event, here's the update... My first experience with Automotive Consultants (when they were in their previous location, about 2 years ago) was excellent. They diagnosed and fixed the problem with my truck for far less than the dealer would have and they did good work. About 9 months later my truck developed another problem and I brought it back to Automotive Consultants, and again, the work was done properly and the charge was not outrageous (though it wasn't the bargain that I had with the first trip). Fast forward to spring 2009 and yet another issue came up with the truck (a leaking seal and brake issues). Again, I took the truck to Automotive Consultants and again, the work seemed to have been done properly but the bill seemed really high for what was done. A month after Automotive Consultants did the brake work I was driving the truck and smelled rubber or plastic burning. I looked at the cars around me and didn't see anything, then pulled into a parking lot and saw that there was something on fire around my front brakes. I immediately took the truck back to Automotive Consultants (note that while it was a month since the last visit, my truck is a second vehicle and I hadn't put more than 50 miles on it during that time). Their diagnosis was frozen calipers. I asked Rick whether the frozen calipers were caused by his previous repair and he said no. I questioned how it could be that the brakes would freeze so soon after a repair and he just shrugged and wouldn't even consider that he was at fault. After $800 in additional repairs, I found that there's virtually no way that the first brake repair was done properly if the calipers froze within 50 miles of the job being completed. So I'm no longer a customer of Automotive Consultants. I read more

Service was performed on a 2000 328i, with 140K Miles brought to a local dealer who wanted $3,000.00 to replace the AC Compressor, as it was having a knocking sound, and then had no cold air, looked at another local source they wanted $1,700.00. No Thanks...l most forgot about Rick, I knew had done some work on a friends car years back. Rick did the diagnostic, did an AC service, dried, and recharge with the correct pressures, and replaced a worn idler bearing for about $250.00... It's working great now, and I'll keep lookout for sounds/problems, if it eventually needs to be replaced I know who will do the work! Called me during the repair with an update. This is how service should be done at all shops Felt they were very honest about what needed to be done, and gained my trust on this repair. read more

5 Stars and here's why: My Mini Cooper broke down 400 miles from home. AAA recommend Rick after calling a few places that didn't work on minis. Rick was able to get the parts and repair the car in less than 4 hours, really closer to 3 hours. Called me when he had identified the problem and clearly went over the costs. Called when car was ready and waited until after closing for me to pick up car. Cost was exactly what was quoted no additional gotchas. I love finding an auto repair place that does the following: 1. Great customer service; makes periodic phone calls to give you feedback, not pushy, nice front desk lady, and keeps you involved! 2. Fast - got it back the next afternoon Window wouldn't go down OR up on my Volvo wagon (door was broken inside - awesome) and I had to recharge the A/C. I figured I couldn't wait any longer once I started crying on 680 Friday during our little heat wave. My car was 106 F, I had to pee, traffic wasn't moving - I was terribly attractive... 3. Being new to the San Ramon/Dublin area, I was at first searching for an auto mechanic for our 06 Honda Odyssey that didn't charge dealer-level maintenance prices. To my pleasant surprise, I found a conveniently located shop in Dublin that offers that and more. Low prices, an owner who has been in the business for many years, a shop that has experience working with both Japanese and German cars, as well as a shop who is honest about the services they provide and recommend. In the several times I have had my car serviced there, the final costs were actually less than estimates that I had signed off on (sometimes significantly so). Particularly if honesty is important to you in a repair shop, this is one I would look at. They also have wireless which is nice if you are waiting for your service to be completed. read more

Jenn at the front desk is an absolute sweetheart! She is very helpful and has been great at helping me come up with a solution to my car problems. She is very prompt and gets back to me on the phone. Well the positive is that they offer a free AAA full inspection on your car, and most of them do a VERY thorough job too. The negative: they over charge for almost all their work. Example: They wanted to charge me $15 for a PCV valve and $75 to put it in. The part cost $3 at Kragen and it takes a whopping 20 seconds to put it in. So I guess I wont be using them anymore, still searching for an honest mechanic that will not overcharge. any ideas? read more

Still Great. My car wouldn't start and they fixed the clutch button under the clutch pedal. This costs in total only $78. They could have easily lied to me and told me it was the starter or the clutch.........which would end up costing a couple hundred. Also, I told them that Jiffy Lube mentioned my power steering fluid needed replacement. They checked it out for me and said it was fine. Again something they could have charged me for but didn't. I appreciate the honesty of this place, besides a little bit of a wait for your car (1 day more than other mechanics) its worth since they're so honest. read more
