Nice rooms. It is very quiet if you have quiet neighbors next door. The room was clean. It was a bit chilly at night, but they had a heater. The bed was very comfy. The view from a window is also good. There was hot water in the shower. The receptionist waited on us until 12 p.m.; we had an issue with a car and were running late. She was very attentive and polite.

The lady who checked us in was very nice and they sent somebody to snake out the toilet, which wouldn't flush. I was concerned that meant the room wouldn't be clean and the refrigerator stunk and had puddles on the glass shelves. The shower has no water pressure whatsoever and a small device which appears as a dehumidifier or heater comes on for a minute every twenty minutes or so, whether it's needed or not. Like others, I didn't want to touch the small wall device, so I left both windows open to keep the room aired out. You can enjoy the sounds of the waves at night, juxtaposed with loud snoring from the next room over. The wifi works with a password, but the DHCP lease doesn't last more than an hour, so you constantly must re-login. The pillows are uncomfortable and made my neck sore. Most stuff in San Simeon is terrible and overpriced...nothing should get 5-stars, but this property could get 4-stars if it did regular maintenance and cleaning. It doesn't have an eatery attached like some of the adjacent hotels. Beach access is easy at the end of the street and you'll notice a small cadre of folks who drive or walk at sunrise and sunset. The actual rooms had some updating done in the last decade (the tile style gives it away) but they really need maintenance and cleaning.

don't go here expecting a fancy place to stay. Go here for an inexpensive yet comfortable bed with a terrific view. Located conveniently along 101 in San Simeon, it was very easy to find with lots of parking. I talked to Maria several times to confirm my reservations and ask questions because I booked the room through Expedia. The rooms are a good size, they are dated but were clean and the beds were superior with superior linens. We stayed in room 121 and the view was superb. The hotel is not that close to the beach, but you can hear the ocean all night through the open windows. I'd stay here again for sure. Just a wonderful place to stay if you can live with something not fancy.

While this isn't a large resort hotel, it has the charm of a hidden gem. It's not fancy or high end, but the short walk to the cliff and shore, along with the beautiful open fields and serene environment makes it a lovely spot. It's clean and convenient. The front desk is only open until 11, however the kind attendant was nice and checked up on us to make sure we're getting there as we had some car issues. She said she didn't want to leave us without a room for the night. So thank you sooooo much !

    I'm not touching this!

If you advertise an ocean view it would be great if guests could see through the windows. The room is large but without air conditioning. A ceiling fan is installed above the bed but buzzes loudly when turned on. The wiring hung along the outside of the building made me fearful that the noisy fan was about to start an electrical fire. It's a passable room only because of the proximity to the ocean front but I think I would look for something better next time.

Stayed one night, all seemed well until the morning. Woke up with bed bug bites. Found one on the pillow, took it to the front desk and they refuse to refund me. Had to spend the rest of the trip washing. Not okay. Room 114

Beautifully simple and comfortable. The beach view room was perfect. It is close to Cambria and Hearst Castle. Friendly staff. We would stay here again.

Mold growing on the window sill - For the management: I'm fairly certain this problem is exacerbated by the room being hot as a sauna

I was debating whether to stay here or in Cambria for our 1 year anniversary. The $600 price…read moredifference swayed me to come here instead. The pictures are somewhat misleading. In that the ocean view rooms were old and worn. Dirty curtains. Popcorn ceilings. Lots of things patched together. Small rooms and really dark. I was initially disappointed when we got into our first room. It was not at all what the pictures showed. Being initially on the downstairs unit people would walk by our patio while we're sitting there. Basically looking at us and disturbing our peace. Our 2nd unit was upstairs. Which was a lot better. As we had more privacy and a better view of the ocean. But basically the same layout as downstairs. There were alot of things I enjoyed about this resort, which ultimately left me satisfied with my stay here. For example: 1. The grounds was beautiful and expansive. Lots of greenery. They had a sand volleyball court. Multiple fire pits. A giant chess and checkers board. Multiple areas to sit along the cliff. 2. View from the balcony was unmatched. You have a very expansive and view of the ocean. We werent beach front. We were the ocean view balcony rooms. But it was nice too because you were able to see the grounds of the resort leading into the ocean. Rocking chairs and table too were a nice touch on the balcony. 3. Nice beach access and super close too. No street crossing or dodging cars. 4. Front desk. They moved our rooms (to an upstairs room) with no issues. They also have complimentary toiletries at the front desk. 5. Fire place. Our rooms had fire places. With a lot of compressed wood chip bricks. It definitely warmed up the room and made it so much more romantic. 6. Parking. They have parking right infront of your room. So there isnt that much walking from your vehicle to the room. 7. During the weekdays there was no one here!! You literally had the entire resort to yourself which was amazing!! 8. Close proximity to Cambria as well as the elephant seal viewpoint, as well as many other points of interest. Things that could use some improvement: 1. Rooms. They need an update. Their were stains on certain towels, which is disgusting. 2. Room service. We had our room cleaned one day. They didnt throw any of the trash away on the table. They didnt get rid of the used cups. Nor did they empty the trashcans..... 3. Pillows- the pillows tucked! Beds were super comfy. But im sore and my neck and back is tight.... 4. Gym. Again based on the pictures it was this huge thing. But it was extremely small. Served its purpose. But it looked like an after thought. They were also missing handles on their machines. Overall it was a wonderful 5 night stay. The views are unparalleled. I love how much green space is here. After the weekend there was basically no one here. So it was a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

On the positive side, the staff is friendly, personable, and helpful. The ocean-view rooms have great views of the water, and they also have fireplaces. The hotel offers room service, and there is a restaurant on-site. Although it is not the best restaurant, it is nice to have it as an option. The grounds are beautiful and expansive. There are fire pits, multiple benches along the bluff where you can sit and enjoy the view, two pools, a volleyball court, giant chess, and a giant checkerboard. On the not-so-positive side, the hotel could use some serious attention. It felt dated and worn. I also found the pictures to be a bit misleading. The photo of the room I booked showed a seating area with a table, but that was not present in my room. Noise was also an issue. I was on the ground floor, and every time someone in the room above me got up, I could hear every step they took. The bathroom fan in our room sounded like a jet engine. On previous trips, the hotel was fairly empty, so I didn't notice the noise as much. On this trip, however, the hotel was almost full, and I was awakened repeatedly. Overall, there are definitely things I like about the Cavalier, especially the location, views, grounds, and staff. But given the condition of the rooms and the noise issues, I will probably look at other options next time.

There's also a nice-sized swimming pool, although I didn't have a chance to use it during my stay. One of the unexpected highlights was the afternoon chocolate chip cookies--they were fresh and delicious. Fresh coffee was also available throughout the day. Breakfast was better than I expected, with eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, a variety of breads and cereals, fruit, yogurt, and other standard breakfast items. They even had a nice waffle iron and the waffles it made were excellent. If I had one criticism, it would be that the walls are a bit thin. I could hear the occupants in the next room at one point (doing the nasty). Fortunately (for me), it wasn't for very long so it didn't significantly impact my stay. Parking was plentiful, and the location was excellent--directly across from the beach and just a short drive to Hearst Castle and Cambria. The room is sparse, but the one positive I will say is the bed was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was really bad. We had no soap. They have dispensers attached to the walls by the sink and in the shower for soap and lotion. The sink dispenser had lotion in the soap dispenser and the other was empty. Neither of the shower dispensers even worked so we literally had no soap whatsoever in the bathroom. Luckily, we travel with our own. All the doors in the room were filthy and marked up, which leads you to believe how clean is it really? The indoor pool and Jacuzzi was dirty looking and very unappealing. If I only paid $150 to even $200 a night I might say you get what you pay for, but to be charged nearly $600 for this level of accommodations was a complete rip off. I would never stay there again and recommend you don't either. They are dishonest and don't provide even the minimum amenities a motel should. Additionally the water pressure is non existent.
