Came for lunch on a Sunday. When we walked in, San Sun had a few tables of customers enjoying food. We ordered two noodle bowls as well as their green onion liver dish. We were surprised that the liver dish was $21, which we thought was pricey. Service was friendly and prompt, and the interior was decently spacious and clean with lots of tables and chairs. Big menu with lots of items to choose from. I decided on the Hainan chicken with ho fun noodle soup. Parents ordered the combo needle noodles and kiddo ordered one of the beef pho and pork kidneys w/ onion. The needle noodles are served with fried egg covering the top. Lots of meat. Flavorful but missing that wok hei flavor. The ho fun noodle soup was ok and the chicken was moist but they weren't meaty - missing something. Served with a side of ginger sauce, but it was too gingery for my liking. It's a texture thing for me so the kidneys were not my fave, but kiddo sure enjoyed them. I've been coming here for the past decade. The combination noodles (number 101) is one of the best in the Bay. Everything in it -- from the beef balls to the pork kidney to the minced pork to the noodles -- is always amazingly perfect. I've brought friends here to carbo load before the SF Marathon, and they raved about it for years. The owner recommends eating the egg noodles with red vinegar. It wasn't on the table. He actually got it from the fridge and brought it over, saying that he always ate it that way in Hong Kong and that it elevates the entire dish. And it did. read more

So we stopped into this Vietnamese/Chinese food palace in the heart of Chinatown. My expectations were low but the photo of the pork kidney soup drew us in. I was drawn to the crispy noodles dish with chicken. We had Gai lan-Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. My friend had the pork kidney soup and absolutely loved it. She said she would eat this everyday. So, it's not really a Chinese dish, more Vietnamese and not something you'd find everywhere. So be adventurous and give it a try, or stick with the crispy noodles with chicken, beef or chicken. I only rate the food. The food was amazing, I had the orange chicken and it had the perfect amount of flavor, and it even came with orange slices that were juicy and fresh. As for the service, it was fantastic. My server (Maggie) was so polite, and seated us at whatever table we felt comfortable at, and she asked us how we were doing and if our day was good. She greeted us at the door and told us about some of the restaurants bosses and owners. Our food came out fast and hot, and it was so good. Then Maggie went to a different restaurant to let us try some dim sum, because we'd never tried it before, and she didn't even charge us for it, and she brought us different kinds and told us what they were. It was very busy on a Sunday afternoon because of an event in Chinatown. We were seated promptly as someone just left but we waited for our food for over 30 mins for just 3 items. There was a large group of teens who finished lion dance for the event that they wanted to feed first because and I quote, "they were very hungry". Not the best way to apologize for our long wait time. We ordered the hainan chicken rice, shrimp and pork kidney noodle soup, and bun bo hue. I was pleasantly surprised by the BBH. Flavors were good and it wasn't overly spicy. Good amount of meats as well. My dad thought the hainan chicken rice was mid. The sauce it came with was sweet and not the usual green onion ginger dipping sauce. The prices are pretty decent here too. When they were still at the other location, where the Bart is, I would go there every weekend with my family. From what I remember, the food was delicious! Leek Dumpling: It's not as good as I remember it. It's too soft. If you try to get it with chopsticks it will crumble. Chiu Chow Combination Noodle: I usually get this at other restaurants, but first time trying it here. I got the ho fun rice noodle and thin egg noodles. The soup was very bland, no flavor at all. Lots of meat and right amount of noodles though. I should've stuck with my regular order, chicken ho fun. That one is flavorful with wok "air", with a lot of meat and veggies! Was greeted and seated and then I placed my order of Hainanese chicken w/ noodle soup. My order came out in 3-4 minutes which is fast considering that they just opened, it came with a generous bowl of rice noodles with a heap of green onions topped with fried onions and a plate of Hananese whole chicken leg that had a sauce soy sugar and ginger from what I can tell as a dip. I love this place, and have been coming to San Sun since their prior location on Stockton. The satay chow fun is my go-to dish, either with beef or chicken. The noodles come out piping hot and with plenty of wok hei (delicious char), and there's a comforting blanket of sauce and chinese broccoli. As a Viet-Chinese place, the noodle soups are also solid. There's one dish I've never seen elsewhere, and it's multiple types of noodles combined in one, and served with a prawn cracker. Lots of seating, and the wait staff is speedy. read more

This is my go-to spot in chinatown since I was a kid. They serve teo chew food, which is my mom's people. My favorite things to order are the Fried Oysters with Egg as an appetizer (with a dipping sauce made of fish sauce and white pepper) and the Satay Ho Fun noodles (flat, wide rice noodles) with my meat of choice being pork kidney. You can't really get kidney in a lot of restaurants, but legit Teo Chew places have them. They're also a pain to prepare myself, so it's a treat to get so many without doing any work. If these items sound crazy and far out for you, don't worry, they also have beef, chicken, and shrimp options. There's plenty on the menu! read more

It's odd 'tho, as I went to Chinatown looking for Chinese Food and when you walk on Stockton and many of the perpendicular streets like Jackson, or parallel streets like Grant, you'll notice there's really not that many restaurants you can sit down and eat at. There's a few bakery styled dim sum take out spots. There's lots of markets, trinket stores and jewelry shops. There's really not a whole lot of restaurants, or at least in the area we were walking around. This place looked new and clean 'tho it touted "Pho" so I wasn't sure if this place had Chinese food and was Vietnamese, which it ended up being pretty much both, including some Cantonese dishes. The prices were okay, the portions were okay as well 'tho not as big in quantity as I used to recall back in the days, such as the Chow Fun which should have been double the portions served. Humble noodle shop in Chinatown but extra props for pig's kidneys and accepting credit cards. The majority of the menu at San Sun is some form of noodle soup and you can pick your noodles - anything from egg noodles to rice vermicelli. They also have the most pig's kidneys I've seen on a menu. I'm not necessarily a fan per se but it does have nostalgic appeal since grandma used to make it a lot and the preparation here is pretty similar. It all just reminds me of grandma. Appreciate the effort to clean and cook it since I won't at home. Option to have it in noodle soup or stir-fried with ginger and scallions. I've had the former but wished the broth had more flavor. Eater SF ranks San Sun on the top underrated restaurants in San Francisco. It's one of the few ChiuChow cuisine I've seen in California. I recommend the Combination noodle soup with either small rice noodle or wide egg noodles. There are 8 kinds of noodles you can pick for your noodle soup. The most unique dish is Pure Rice Noodle. I recommend trying it. It's stir fry short thick rice noodles with an egg. I've never seen short thick rice noodles (they call it Pure Rice Noodle) anywhere before. After googling it, looks like these noodles are typically in South East Asian such as Hong Kong, Cambodia, Malaysia. The waitress then brought us some complimentary tea while we decided what to order. We ordered a couple noodle dishes, some wontons and some rice for my nephew. We were brought the wontons within a few moments. They were good. She then brought our noodle dishes. She didn't bring my nephew's rice and she tended to stay in the back of the restaurant so I went to the back to ask if she could bring his rice. A few minutes later she brought the bowl of rice. My nephew liked his rice. The tea was fine and so were the wontons. The noodle dishes were okay. There wasn't a lot of flavor, everything needed a lot more garlic, ginger or some spice. My family and I have been eating here for over 20 years. We always get their fried fish balls, shrimp and pork noodle soup, and spicy beef saday sauce noodle soup. Occasionally we will try other entrees and noodle soups as well. Although the restaurant is not one of the cleanest you'll find, my family thinks that the quality of their food had stayed consistent for over two decades (at least, the dishes that we regularly order). The only thing I'm reviewing is #311 Dried Beef Ho Fun with Bean Sprout ($9.25), which I ate as a takeout dish, and it's excellent! My parents have been looking for legit beef chow fun with thin-cut rice noodles, which according to them is more authentic than what you usually find in the states (very thick, sticky, stretchy rice noodles). Besides that, the beef slices are amazing, superbly tender, and the whole dish has great flavor. The fresh, lightly cooked bean sprouts give each bite a perfect crunch.
