This place what can i say lol it's horrible to say the least. The staff is rude they actually dont care if you stay or leave. The owner is this older lady who is also really rude and rushes you through when you are ordering. We ordered the typical dim sum dishes like everyone and even those didnt come out right. The dumpling skins are hard and the shrimp have a very very sharp taste. At the end 8 dishes and 3 people lol we gave up and probably finished the fried lotus root cake some rice and the some of the dumplings we ordered. When we asked for the check the rude lady just tosses the receipt on the table and didn't even ask if we wanted to go boxes lol I guess she knew the food isnt good either. This is a typical Chinatown local joint where they serve mainly locals. Come for the good food and excellent value... and not the service. This place is hustling and bustling during brunch/ lunch hours especially on weekends. They are famous for their: 1.) Jook or Congee. The best congee here is pork stomach w ginkgo nuts and bean curd congee... so good! Other congee selections are just as good - preserved egg with pork, minced beef congee... all yum! and super fresh. They make their congee batch daily and often sell out before 12pm/ 1pm. 2.) Rice noodles - plain rice noodles or wrapped with shrimp, beef, BBQ pork etc. They make all their noodles here fresh daily too. 3.) Turnip cake - or their turnip black eye pea cake. With green onion, dried shrimp... unique and again, made fresh daily. 3.) Clay pot rice - ask them to make it "more dry" and get the 'slight burnt' at the bottom of the clay pot for the rice ... if that suits your taste. Dinner tends to get slow here but we would come if we'd prefer a quieter dinner. Often we'll order a live fish from the tank and steam it (about $26 each) , plus a few other dishes and that's dinner! I really wanted to like the place, as it had a Mom and Pop Chinese vibe which I always prefer over the corporate P.F. Chang's thing. But I just didn't. Dim Sum brought us in... but they didn't offer it in the late afternoon, and wouldn't make us anything. The sticky laminated menus had a decent, if uninspired, variety of dishes. We got the eggrolls, the walnut shrimp, and a vegeterian chow mein. Everything was a notch below average. Happy Chinese Restaurant has been around in Chinatown for a while now. I remember going to it when it was a newer restaurant when I was in high school... and that was a loooong time ago. The restaurant is your typical dim sum place at lunch, but I would say serves up food that is above the average for San Francisco's Chinatown. I was surprised at how tasty and full of flavor some of my dishes were! Like many dim sum restaurants in Chinatown, Happy Chinese Restaurant serves its food on carts that roll around the dining room area. When the cart comes by you can select which item you'd like to have and the server will mark the menu with the appropriate price. Today I wanted to eat a bit lighter so we went easy on the ordering. Usually it's so easy to just eat with your eyes and ask for over the amount of food you can actually eat. We selected some bamboo leaf rice and some spinach wraps. The rice is a sticky rice that comes with Chinese sausage and a hard egg yolk. It was a decent item, but I've definitely had better versions of this elsewhere. During our lunch, this was probably the least impressive item we ordered... but I still enjoyed it. The spinach wraps were extremely tasty. After the rice item I was a bit skeptical, but each filled wrap was definitely hitting high notes in terms of flavorful punch - not too much... but just right. Aside from ordering from the cart, you can also special order other dishes like noodles or congee. Our family 99% of the time gets a noodle dish, but today was different. I felt like congee so we got some. Oh man... it was soooo good! Again, the flavor was there. We got a small bow (which was still pretty large) and finished it all up. I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed the congee here. In terms of service, everything was good for a Chinese restaurant. One of the ladies was quick to make sure I didn't forget my camera which was on the table. I appreciated that! The restaurant is pretty clean and bright. This is a regular spot for me to stop at when I go see my chinese doctor across the street. 80% of the time I get jook. Thousand year old egg with shredded pork is DELICIOUS. Not a fancy place, super casual but it's the best jook in Chinatown. They also have great steamed flat rice noodle sheets (a regular dim sum dish). And also The clay pot rice ! Yeah no. Save your time and money. 0 stars for service, 0 stars for food...no stars for anything...The servers don't speak English, so ordering itself was a whole ordeal. They're also keep trying to up sell you by bringing stuff out and insisting that you ordered it. We showed them PICTURES of what we wanted, and they STILL managed to get it wrong... We ordered the siu mai, shrimp dumplings, chicken feet, pan fried chive dumplings, lotus paste bun, beef rice noodle roll...all of which were just...EHHH. Mushy and just plain gross. We saw the bad yelp reviews already, but my parents wanted to leave early so it was one of the only places opened at 7:30 am. This place ONLY TAKES CASH to beware! Also recalculate your bill yourself. They tried to rip us off but thankfully my sister and I caught it just on time. All in all...just steer clear of this place. "Only the locals eat here...real Chinese..." That is what my mom had to say about this dim sum restaurant as we sat upstairs amongst all the other 'older' generations of Chinese people dining. And she was right, all you hear is Cantonese spoken. No yuppie diners found here at all. (This is what I call casual eating, you won't find cloth napkins or pretentious people here!) My mom chose this restaurant as I had pleaded for her to find a dim sum place that served the Shanghai dumplings AND the Shark Fin Dumplings in soup AND the pickled chicken feet. (I was trying my darnest to impress my man! And everyone knows it's through a man's stomach if you want him to stick around. I can't cook, but I sure as hell can read a menu and order!) We started with the standard shrimp dumplings (har gow) and pork dumplings (sui mai). We also ordered the chicken feet in black bean sauce, which is always yum. The beef balls with Worcester sauce is tasty too. The tripe was a smaller order than what I'm used to though. We tried the spare ribs with ribbon rice noodles. I liked how the noodles stayed rolled together and found myself going back for seconds. The beancurd wrapped around something or other was much tastier and full of flavor than Orchids Garden Restaurant in Vegas. The Shark Fin Dumpling in soup had to be ordered a good 20 minutes in advance, and it was impressive. I was hesitant that I would find any 'real' shark fin in there, as I had been misled before. As one of the older waitresses served us, she overheard us talking about 'fake shark fin' and she was quick to refute what we had said. She insisted there was real shark fin in our soup. As I broke my big dumpling up, I was not disappointed, there was indeed real shark fin in my soup! Yum yum! Score for them for getting that part right. My Shanghai dumplings were good too, hot as hell in the middle like they are supposed to be. I only wish they provided slices of ginger to go with the red vinegar you use for both dishes. The picked white chicken feet came with a dipping sauce that could have used a bit more tang. Usually when I order this dish to go from other restaurants, they provide this orange color dipping sauce and I would have preferred that more. And I wish they had more pickled radish and carrots underneath the feet too! Desserts - lacking. They only offered egg custard tarts from what I could see. I was looking for the Black Sesame Roll, and they didn't have that. They only accept cash, which can be tricky! With a party of four, it was under $50 with leftover feet to bring home. Being located on Powell, it's away from some of the other bigger dim sum restaurants. I usually don't eat dim sum in Chinatown because of the horrendous parking, but my parents were game. I was definitely pleased with my mom's choice, after all, she's a tour guide for Chinatown and she has to know her stuff. And plus, my man got to eat his favorite - the Shark Fin Dumpling in soup with REAL shark fin! Yay! Anyway, we decided to stop and have lunch. The place we originally wanted to go (can't remember the name) had a long wait and we saw this restaurant a few doors down and decided to go in. I'd give this place a 3.5, but Yelp has no halves :( Stopped by this place because we were in the mood for dim sum but it was already past 1 so we knew not too many places would be serving. We were in the area so figured might as well try this place. As other reviews have said, this place caters more to the locals. Our family speaks Cantonese and can understand some Toisanese/Taishanese, but they speak a dialect that I don't think was Toisan, so it was hard to understand them at times. I can imagine how it would be difficult for a non-Chinese speaker to eat here, but they try. By the time we got here most of the dishes were already gone so we got what they did have left: chicken feet, siu mai, tofu skin rolls, custard buns, sticky rice in lotus leaf. Because they didn't have too much of the more basic dim sum dishes, they offered some different things that they still had; including this rice noodle with green onion, dried shrimp, and meat bits with taro and meat. It was quite interesting, and more like homestyle cooking. My dad said that it was like something that his grandma would used to make. We also tried steamed fish balls, which was interesting. They do try to push their own dishes on you, so be firm if you don't want something! It makes me sad to see all the negative reviews. They were closed for a while for remodeling, not sure what they did except maybe changed the floors and moved the register. The walls, tables, ceiling tiles...are all the same. With the remodeling comes the price increase but they are still reasonable for Chinatown. We had the minced beef congee - small is now $5. It was good and on the watery side, which we didn't mind but may not be ideal for some. All their dim sum is $2.50, which is their medium price - a bit sneaky since most of the dim sum they serve are considered small elsewhere except for maybe a few. Needed a place that cooked up fresh bowl of porridge since it was the only food settling enough for my stomach. Had a small bowl of fish porridge which could have fed 2-3 people, and it was absolutely fresh and delicious. I get there, no seating. 6 mins later, the hostess kicks out this lady waiting for her take-out. We get seated- ordered spareribs( old tasting, tasted disgusting), chiu chow dumplin( dad said it was nasty- i did not even go there), shrimp dumpling ( shrimp tasted old, miranted with lots of pepper), sticky rice ( it was dry sticky rice), the best two dish i had: chicken feet and bamboo wrap. 2 stars but they have pretty good porridge so 3 stars. I wanted some porridge so my mom took me here with two of her coworkers. They are known for their fish porridge but surprisingly they were out and this is around noon! WTF?! We ordered two other porridge, the variety with peanuts and the beef. Go with the beef! The variety was all the cheap leftover stuff. I can't even name anything in there. The beef porridge was pretty good. I had half of the bowl. LOL. The porridge comes in three sizes. The small can feed a single person but its enough to share with their dim sum items. Another thing that is popular here is their ribs over rice noodles. The rice noodle was pretty tasty with the sauce the ribs are cooked in. The dim sum wasn't too bad but they only have some stuff. It is more ordering what you want here. The porridge comes out fast but my mom's coworker ordered some fried spring rolls because he wanted it with the porridge. He asked every worker about the spring rolls all giving him the answer of they are in the process of being fried or other just ignored him. When we were about to pay we asked the owner and she got them for him. Horrible service. A women's and men's bathroom in the back. The bathroom is huge. Probably could have fit some stalls in there. Decided to stop here after two other places we tried in China Town were super packed. So glad that we did. I was a little skeptical as it was fairly empty beside a few other tables. I was really wanting dim sum and did not see it on the menu so I asked the server. She was super nice and knew English and brought us all our favorite dim sum items, steam pork buns, dumplings, shumai and beef wrapped in rice noodle. Everything came out hot and fresh. I am rating this restaurant 3 stars because I grew up with this style of restaurants. This is how the old school dim sum houses were like back in the 70's. Unfortunately for them................we are no longer in that time period. The food here is actually decent. Most of the locals dine at this establishment for the cheap eats. Do not come here if you expect service, cleanliness, or promptness. Do not come here if you are comparing this to Mayflower, Koi Palace, or City View. You will not see any tourists in this establishment. They cater to the locals and that's it. They are a no nonsense mom and pop restaurant. The don't even have carts rolling by. They actually have individuals with trays walking around. I like that. I like the edgy feel of these types of restaurants......it's very asian ghetto. I found that the siu mai, beef rice roll, spareribs, chicken feet, and taro dumpling to be above average. The XLB was terrible. I might even have to say the worst I have tasted in the city. The har gow had more soup in the dumpling than the xlb. Note..........har gow is not suppose to be soupy. If you are adventurous and want to see how dim sum was like back in the 70's then give this place a try. It's not the best but it is an experience that is eye opening. read more

You gotta like this place. I usually go with my Chinese mom in law and the family here. It's a real dim sum experience. I'm the only white guy, I usually get a fork and a knife (which I refuse to use) and I get iced water. If you're Chinese you get chopsticks and hot tea ;) no one really speaks English and that's where my mom in law steps in. I had so yummy and delicious dim sum here!!! If you know what to order it can be one of the best dim sum in the city, if you do not... then probably not so much. So do some research, expect not too much friendly service and cleanliness and just go with it. You won't regret it! It just suffices to say the food here is awful. Everything but the congee (rice porridge) is just horribly inedible and spoiled. I'm surprised nobody here has gotten a rotten case of food poisoning! The best part about this restaurant is the rat problem. I like to call it, the "rat named Kitty". The old woman who owns this place insists that the approximately 1 1/2 foot long rat that runs around the restaurant floor is a "cat". This is my go-to dim sum place...so CHEAP and delicious! The atmosphere is no thrills, but the staples -- BBQ pork buns, shrimp dumplings, shiu mai, etc. -- are really flavorful and done right. I've noticed though that it's pretty hard to order and get what you want if you don't speak Cantonese. (I'm pretty sure I would have given it less than 4 stars if I didn't have the language skills to work the system.) So next time you go, make sure you have your trusty translator! I would say that Happy Chinese Restaurant is a place for authentic dim sum, but neither is it very good nor very fresh. The place is a bit dirty and a lot of the dim sum came out cold to lukewarm. Everything was below average, and though authentic was lacking in both presentation and flavor. However, I did come here once for a banquet style meal. The food then wasn't the best, but was actually quite decent. I didn't really have any complaints then. During my visit to SF from SD I found Happy Chinese Restaurant while exploring the outskirts of Chinatown. The restaurant's interior is past it's prime, but we were made welcome from the first moment. Our 70 year old waitress was funny and patient with us while ordering Dim Sum from the picture menu. We got 5 different types of Dim Sum and the total was $22. The quality is great and cheap. For true eaters the food quality is first with interior decor second! read more

Far removed from Chinatown's super touristy Grant Avenue, Happy Chinese Restaurant is definitely "off the beaten path." In fact the staff seemed rather shocked and confused when we, two non-Chinese, came through the door and asked for a table. There is nothing fancy or pretty about this place, but there is a great selection of yummy dim sum. We tried several dishes, ranging from barbecue pork buns to shrimp dumplings. Everything was absolutely delicious and exceeded my expectations. Oh, and the tea that they serve is wonderful. I asked one of the servers what it was and she simply stated that it was "flower tea." I would love to know the true name for it because it was quite possibly the best I've tasted. In addition to the excellent food, the staff at Happy Chinese are incredibly friendly and helpful. It was truly a delight to interact with them! The bottom line - don't go here for the ambience, go for the food! We found it on the walk back to our vacation rental on Mason, on our last night there. We were looking for takeout, but as we were staring at the menu boards out front, the sweetest lady opened the door and said, "come in, come in and sit down!" We're so glad we did! The food was great, the price was right, everyone was super nice, and the waiter even took the time to give our kids chopsticks lessons. It is cash only, and they don't speak English, but that didn't matter in the end. We pointed to what we wanted, and before we knew it, we had a bowl of roasted peanuts (to practice our chopsticks skills), a big bowl of the best hot and sour soup we've had in forever, and a plate of delicious spring rolls. More food than we could eat in two meals followed right after. We loved it. We'll be back on our next trip, and recommend this place for a taste of "Chinatown!" read more

Come here if you want to experience 1970s 1980s all over- Chinatown style! This place isn't the best in terms of food, but it's an affordable, dive (dim sum), and decent in terms of portions and taste. You can choose to ignore the facade or look at it's age as memories of the past. Why should you come here? #1 Affordable/Decent Quality: I've come here several times for various lunch banquets. For a little over $100 per table meant for 10 diners, I've dined here with 7-9 entree items for lunch. Besides Yi Ben House (which by the way closed as of last year in Chinatown off Pacific Avenue and Stockton Street), nowhere else in Chinatown and probably in San Francisco can you get decent lunch "banquet" dive style for the above price. The portions were sizable and enough where we had about 1/3 of the food leftover with a full table of hungry patrons. During the Moon Festival, the restaurant also offers the cheapest moon cake in Chinatown (think under $10 for the pack- 2/3 less than the brand names they sell at the stores). I enjoyed the chicken marinaded in soy sauce and the thin noodles w/chicken. Oh and the congee was decent too! #2 A Trip Down Chinatown History: This place is ancient- as ancient as the owner (see point #3). It reminds me of Old Chinatown- from the walls to the decor to the carpet. It's run down and totally dive style, but you can't help but get a real taste of the casual dining of the past - and with past prices too. Also, if you rent the above floor for a party, there is a sound system. The sound system itself is NOT that old, but turn on the karaoke machine and all the machines got seemingly older as I sat eating last week. Old school Cantonese pop music and songs reminiscent of the golden age of HK music (think Sam Hui years) and old Taiwanese singers like Deng Li Juan. As you listen to the music, you can't help but feel like you traveled through time. And for those experienced eaters of dim sum, you might just be surprised at some of the offerings here. For instance, there was a "goji berry" dessert on our lunch banquet menu. I kept thinking what the heck is that? Alas, it came in 4 giant blocks with goji berries and I had a flashback of those days when my grandmother use to make them - the same Toisan/Taishanese way! #3 The Elderly Granny Owner: Where else is the owner so involved with the daily operations of their restaurant? At this place, the owner oversees the banquet/luncheon operations, serves as the waitress, the hostess, and the cashier. Either she does not want to hire extra staff or she is an uber micro manager. She must be at least 70+ years old and is quite ancient yet adorable in the degree of involvement she has with the daily grind. Props to her. She is a bit blunt and slightly rude at times, but she is so cute! Look out for her- she's taller than the average granny, skinny, doesn't smile a lot, and loves wearing an apron. During the Chinese New Year, she also partakes in selling moon cakes. If this piques your interest, the waitresses are just as old as her! It's almost like her staff started with her and aged with her. #4 Toisan/Taishan Cuisine: Pre-1980s Chinatown was mainly Taishan/Toisan folks. Take a look now and you will realize that while there are a lot of Mainland (Mandarin) tourist checking out Chinatown, many of its residents are still from the Pearl River Delta Region. Gone are the elderly Toisan ladies that use to knit scarves and hats along Stockton Street, but this place reminds me of the past and my childhood.The way they prepare some of their food is quite toisan. You can call it dive, comfort, and totally casual, but eat here and you will get a sampling of how dim sum use to be. On Powell between Pacific and Broadway. Only reason I came here was to go to the closest restaurant to my grandparents. The food is significantly below average and the variety of dim sum is poor as well. This looks like a little family operation so I do not want to be harsh but the food neither looks or taste appetizing compared to the better places in Chinatown. Mediocre food and service. I did enjoy their fried durian dessert and sesame balls. (YES I LOVE DURIAN and I'M NOT afraid to admit it!) The place looks grungy-ish (I was eating on the second floor), but at least the we got alot of fresh air and sunlight from the open windows... As stated in one previous reviews, only real Chinese people eat here. Very true and i like it that way. No hipsters, nothing pretentious. Bomb ass porridge and the BEST clay pot rice. Yeah its not a fancy place or anything but if you want the real deal, this is the place. It would help if you spoke Cantonese. read more

Shame on Happy Chinese restaurant for serving shark fin to their customers. The high levels of methyl mercury that accumulate in shark tissue make for seriously unhealthy eating, and anyone who's paying attention knows that shark populations worldwide are crashing due to over-harvesting. I will definitely not be going here any time soon. read more

i havent ate dim sum in chinatown for quite some time. when i used to visit, it was always harbor village. if i was in chinatown, it had to be new asia. our newest mission this time was for me to try some new items and the best or better shanghai dumplings and shark fin dumplings in soup compared to what ive had before...namely my vegas dim sum adventures. i have to thank my lovely dining companion and her mother and father to take me there. this isnt your elegant chinese restaurant, so its no harbor village with fabric napkins. it is a bit run down, but still it look descent compared to many restaurants that ive been to in chinatown (b/c there are better). there were no foreigners in there, so thats a definite plus. there are plenty of tables here. we were seated in the second floor. we ordered a myriad of items, such as shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, and beef balls (i really didnt taste the worsteshire sauce, though). we had my favorite chicken feet in black bean sauce, which was tasty as hell. i really enjoyed the sauced and fried wrapped bean curd. we also ordered thin strips of tripe, which i have never ordered before. the shanghai dumplings were just delicious. you dip these soft crescent shaped dumplings in red vinegar. when you take your first bite, you get the tang on the outside from the vinegar and surprised by a flood of savory soup from biting through the skin of the dumpling. they also preorded by favorite shark fin dumpling in soup. it was so good and a lot bigger than i am used to. i was also rest assured that there was real shark fin in the soup and not clear glass noodles. i could tell this time b/c the glass clear strips were firmer than the noodles that ive been tricked into eating before. i was disappointed that they did not give a lot red vinegar up front and like my g/f said they didnt give us slivers of ginger either. i finally got to try the pickled white chicken feet that was accompanied with what i thought was a white vinegar sauce. it is served cold atop pickled daikon and carrots. i really like it and would like to try again with this orange colored dipping sauce that i was told about. all in all i was impressed with the dishes here, and will return here again along w/ some friends. i give a BiG "UPS" to my lovely dining companion and her mother for introducing me to this place. oh yeah, for any of you havent been to a dim sum restaurant, dont wear white...i made that mistake before, but this time i wore black...he..he..he read more
