Here is the accent on this event, the men took part in the loading and unloading as if it was their furniture and belongings. Despite some of the negative reviews, I went ahead and gave San Yuan's low rates a try, and I am very glad I did. They were a lot cheaper than other movers ($89/hr + fuel surcharge + tip). In total, for a 1BR apartment move from San Jose to Union City, the cost was ~$460 including tip. Two movers arrived shortly after the promised appointment time and immediately introduced themselves and surveyed the articles to move. They worked briskly without delay and really made me feel like they were not trying to increase the time required. Upon arrival at the destination, they were very receptive and respectful of where items were to be placed. Give them a try. They may not give the initial professional vibe, but they absolutely get the job done well and quickly. Would definitely use them again on my next move. read more

I hired 3 people with truck. Initially everything was good. They completed the work and calculated the fee as per agreed. I made the payment. Then I gave $60 (for 3)as the tip. They started shouting in Chinese saying it is too low. It is a common tactic to so yours neighbors come out and you pay what they ask for..they almost pushed me around and started cursing and threatening. They called Andy(they person I booked the move with) and gave the phone to me. Andy said I got to pay min $45 per person. I was angry. They started to take my stuff back to the truck if I don't pay. In shame and despire, I paid $120 tip finally before they will back off. If you are hiring them, be sure to agree on hourly tip per person before you start the work. And tell them you need no drama, screaming, pushing around, negotiations at end. If they agree, then only allow them to start the work.! That is all, I got to say. It is not the tip payment I have issues with, but forcefully asking for more.money at end! Hope you have a stress free move. But what impressed me more is that their service is absolutely superb. The owner is very responsive with communicating, polite and professional. All three movers are professional, skillful and hardworking. They are also delightful people to be around. Better than any other moving companies that I've had before. Starving Students were supposed to be the movers to move me to my new place, but surprise San Yuan movers (SY Movers) sub contracted by Starving Students. And yes the one had an attitude. They do love they're shrink-wrap don't they. I gave them bubble-wrap I bought for the TV's, which they didn't use and they already put on the truck. I said something to him and he got an attitude and said OKAY, NO GO! Later, when I saw him carting out a box that said in bold letters EXTREMELY FRAGLE!!! and my coffee table with the glass top shrink-wrapped to the stand on top of the box. The coffee table is pretty heavy. I stopped him and said take that off the box please. I had to ask twice before I started to move the table myself, But he grab it and set down, stomped off yelling the f-word over and over. They broke my large office desk, office chair, wall shelves, coffee table stand and the glass top to my kitchen table never got moved to my new place. I think they broke it and just kept it in the truck. Starving Students has been telling since June 19, 2021 they're taking care of it. I want whats owed to me for the damage SY did and SS is responsible for refunding me then they can deal with SY I'm getting ripped off. On top of everything SY overcharged on the hours they worked. Now Andy, at San Yuan we spoke once, now he won't even answer his phone when I try to call. One more thing I really believe. Not long maybe 3 weeks after I moved in, my apartment, my cat got a serious flea problem. My cat and my apartment I moved from we never had fleas. My cat is a indoor cat. Where I live now was sprayed after the old tenant moved out they didn't have pets, and I have new carpets. For the first time I had to put chemicals on my cat and we both were bitten up. I had very mixed feeling about going with them based on reviews here but they were almost quoting half of what other moves quoted ($89 an hour for 2 movers and a truck). So decided to risk it as it was within mountain view and distance between both apartments was less than 3 miles. They arrived about 1 hour latter than scheduled, but Joe was nice enough to let us know in advance. One of the guys spoke English and the other one didn't. But both have them knew how to handle move and did it very efficently. Took them less than 3 hours to do the move which I think was a lot lesser than what I estimated.both apartments were on ground floor but both of them have more than 100 feet of pavement to reach the door step and the destination has about 5 steps on entry. The only negative I see is they over emphasise on the 'tip'. They made it very clear $11 a hour per mover is the expectation. I had no issues in tipping and we did tip both the mover $100. But still it would be nice if they either built added the tip into the price and advertied at $100 a hour instead of $89 a hour. But welll. Overall highly recommend and I don't think you will find a mover cheaper even after adding in the "tip" to their charves. read more

SY moving was great. I was quoted 6 to 7 hours of work for 3 men for a 2 bedroom apartment. That was pretty ridiculous because the 2 movers SY was able to do it in less than 4. Scheduled a move a few weeks via text, which Andy seems to be responsive. 2 movers, 1 driver, and a large truck showed up. There was a big language barrier, but we were able to coordinate the transition, including dropping off a mattress to a third location. They wrapped the couch, chairs, and mattresses in plastic wrap. They had a few wardrobe boxes for the jackets in the closet. At some point, they seemed to be slowing down to not go under time, but ended up not being an issue. During the drop, all items were stacked and placed in the garage. Overall, the process was pretty painless and they were friendly and accommodating. Our initial experience with these movers was pretty good, they sent two young fit guys who completed our 1bed1bath move in an impressive 3 hours. Keeping this in mind we went with them again after 10 months, this time they sent two old guys who were not skilled enough in moving and we had the horrible experience ever. In summary, they took 7 hours for almost the same amount of moving working pretty slow and felt like they were robbing us off of our money by wantedly working slow. They hurried up in the last hour since it was almost 10pm (and I think they wanted to go home already) and we saw their actual speed of moving. If they did the move in this speed, it would have been done in 4 hours. First of all, they arrived an hour and 15 minutes late, which should have rung all the bells (since they might have done the same during their morning hours move). Their manager was responding nicely on sms keep us updated, but once they arrived and were moving, he went on mute and wouldn't respond on sms or pickup the phone (later in the night, he had the audacity to call us since we declined to pay any tips, so much for the hypocrisy). These guys were old and inexperienced in moving. They couldn't understand English very well, so we had no option of telling them to hurry up or do stuff in the way we wanted. One guy picked up one moving box and dropped it from 1 feet height, luckily no damage. While moving the sofa, they struggled for 30 minutes and broke an overhead bulb in the process. If they were experienced, they would first measure and figure out how to get the sofa out in the best way, eventually they figured out to unscrew the legs so that it fits in the doorway. Next we see them working slowly moving boxes and were surprised with the speed they were going. We were also in a hurry for the move to complete since we have a newborn who needs to be cared by its mother. Alas for the move to complete faster, we chipped in our help as well moving whatever that could be rolled easily to the moving truck. We moved approximately 20-30 heavy items that could be rolled easily to the truck so that they can be loaded faster. These guys had no experience how to compactly load the truck which we later figured out since they were having trouble in the last hour loading the unassembled beds. Next they had no mechanical tools to unassemble our beds, they worked with bare hands using the allen wrench to unassemble, taking lot of time in the process (Last time the guys came with mechanical tools and did the job pretty fast). They half unassembled our bed and somehow managed to get it to the truck and in that process bent several seams of the metallic frame. If only they had the skill and tools to unassemble it completely, it wouldn't have been damaged. While one guy was figuring out how to load the last bed, one guy checked everything was loaded in the truck. To my dismay I pointed them to the tv that was mounted and was pretty obvious that we needed it to be moved since we had the original tv box. This time out of frustration I helped him myself to safely pack it in the box and helped him carry the tv box to the truck. They took another half hour to load the truck with the last bed. During all this process, I tried contacting their manager over calls and sms requesting help, but got no replies. Eventually they came to our new place and unloaded the truck in about 2.5 hours (they took 4.5 hours to load). They did the unloading faster since they had to return home and maybe hungry at this point. If only there were faster, they would have done this job in 5 hours instead of 7. We even didnt ask them to mount the tv since they were unskilled and we were skeptic about them. We finally paid them for the hours they worked and paid no tips. The workers were pretty baffled and called their manager. Now this manager had the audacity to call us when his needs weren't met but was nicely ignoring our calls for help. We told him our case and straight out told we aren't happy with the service, nevertheless we paid for the hours they worked and said goodbye. Will not go with them again. read more

I lived in a 3rd floor walkup (no elevator). despite this, they were able to complete my move in 2 hrs. they showed up with a huge truck (too big for my move but that's better than showing up with too small of a truck). but they were professional and did the job professionally. really good price too -- charged $65/hr for 2 movers and a huge 26 ft truck). I was a bit leery since I found them on craigslist and have heard horror stories about movers refusing to release your stuff unless you paid them more. People who came for the move are highly disrespectful so much so that they started using our washrooms at both places without even asking us which should be in the context of Covid and one of the guy was constantly sneezing. Yelp should have an option of negative stars. One of the worst movers ever, actually they deserve to go out of business and close down. If you care about your physical safety and about the value of your stuff, do yourself a favor and book another mover, any mover. Please consider this and other negative yelp reviews because they are all true. I got their contact details as a reference and did not know the name of the moving company before the move. Big mistake, I should have tried to do more research as I am big on yelp reviews. I scheduled moving within San Mateo country for 21Jun2020 and booked 3 weeks in advance. The initial conversation with the manager, Andy was decent. Although he did not understand much English as well, I was able to communicate via text and email and therefore I decided to give benefit of the doubt since some friends had recently used their services and had a decent experience. The quote provided was $90/hour for 2 people, additional $40 surcharge and 20% tip, only accepts cash, payment is additional fees. On the day of the move, they wanted to come early, I rushed my packing and accommodated them an hour early. One guy spoke a little bit of English, the other guy did not speak at all. Within the first two minutes, I understood that it is going to be a tough move since they didnt understand anything I was saying. I took a deep breath and told myself, it is too last minute, and I will just have to deal with this. Any instruction that I gave were completely ignored and responded in a very rude manner in Chinese. All hell broke loose when they started messing up the packing part. They obviously could not understand anything and started mishandling my stuff. Then they asked me for $20 for an additional box which most movers provide for free (if you only need a couple extra). Then the guy who spoke little bit English got angry and started throwing my stuff, I told them if they mishandle my stuff, I do not want their services. Then he started yelling at me, almost came onto me and was a step away from hitting me. The other guy was decent and stopped him. Let me reiterate this part, he was just standing a step away from my physically was yelling a lot in Chinese and had his arms up in the air as if almost to hit me. I asked them to leave immediately and unload my stuff from the car. He threw the rest of my stuff which he was packing in his box on the floor, unloaded my stuff in the middle of the road and left. I was shaken, scared (since I was alone at home for the move), I couldn't believe what had just happened. I felt threatened for my physical safety which I have never felt before in my life. The only reason I did not do a police complaint was because I did not know his name and had no proof or video recording. I was still scared and couldn't get myself together until my boyfriend drove to my place and helped me move all the stuff from the street. Later my boyfriend and I tried to contact that Andy guy, but obviously he did not pick up the phone. I finally figured out the name of the company and have decided to post my review at every website possible. There are many good local moving companies out there, please use them and trust yelp reviews. We had a very short move--from one unit in our apartment complex to another--so I told them we needed them only for two hours to move our heavy things and didn't need a truck. I'm not sure if they sent two of their bad movers because of this, but they were pretty terrible. -They moved all the boxes first, even after we told them to move the furniture first. -One mover spent 30 minutes wrapping up a couch to move (it totally didn't need to be wrapped) while the other one lifted my 200+ pound dresser up the stairs by himself. When we asked where the other mover was and why he wasn't helping him, he said he didn't know. -The mover had to ask my boyfriend to help him flip over the dresser because the other mover was AWOL. -Once the two hours were up, we told them they were done. That other mover was still AWOL for so long that the first mover wasn't able to find him to give him the message that they were done--he kept moving things! We searched long and hard on Craigslist to find professional movers who would do a better job than a guy with a handtruck. Looks like we failed. read more

Pros: -affordable rates (there are NO hidden fees or extra charges; they are upfront about any fuel surcharge. they did not charge "double drive time" like most other movers) -HUGE TRUCK (i moved a 1 bedroom apartment and the truck could probably fit a 3 bedroom house) -showed up on time (they show up, assess the load and then you sign a contract with the start time on it so the hours are very clear) -the guys work FAST (they load and unload very quickly) -All extra equipment included (including wardrobe boxes, extra boxes) -they will take down and reassemble furniture if you need them to -very nice guys Cons: -the movers don't speak much english (this wasn't really a problem bc they worked efficiently and were very nice but if you had some complicated directions this could be an issue). -because they work so fast, if you had some really valuable furniture, you might have to make special note; they didn't damage anything but there were a couple of times when small dings/bumps could have damaged more fragile furniture would hire them again. read more

Hired them for two jobs in as many weeks and was impressed with their professionalism. First job was just to move a dining table which went by without a hitch. Second job involved moving a number of items (beds, desk, etc) from San Carlos to two different locations. We got all our items delivered intact and without scratches, and I especially like that the workers didn't hassle us for a bigger tip after we paid them. Of course, I pre-empted any hassling for the first job by stating upfront how much I planned to tip, but I don't think that they would have hassled anyway. Also, they have paperwork to document each job, and you'll need to sign at the start and at the end. Might not be a big deal for some, but it's comforting for me as it shows that these guys are not shady moonlighters. Only drawback is that the workers operating the truck and moving your stuff don't speak English. You might want to get a translator to stand by on moving day to direct them. read more

It's the first time I'm saying this on yelp but "Don't go by the reviews" here! San Yuan did a fantastic job moving our stuff two months ago, this is a long pending review. They were very efficient, clean and best of all - reasonably priced! They agreed to doing only a 2 hour move for us, coz I'd already told them we didn't have too many things worth 3 hours or more. Andy rescheduled the move from 2pm to 3pm and ultimatey to 5pm, but they had the courtesy to inform us and ask if that was okay with us and we were, sort of. They arrived at 5, didn't waste a single minute and completed the move in 1.5 hours! We were thoroughly impressed and tipped them well :) Will surely recommend them for your next move. read more

MAJOR HIDDEN CHARGES:EXTORTION!!! One "Star" ONLY because Andy was accommodating when I had to change my moving day three days before, otherwise they would have gotten negative stars!!! My son's family had used San Yuana couple of weeks before, on a referral form other family members. I guess it depends on the particular crew you get. WHAT a FIASCO!!! *What is up with "Saran Wrapping" all my furniture, when you have a stack of moving blankets in the back of the truck? * As a result, Some of my antiques were significantly dinged. *They lost the power cord for my TV, as well as a bunch of other things that are still MIA. *Once they got to the new house, they didn't care where I wanted my furniture or other belongings. *I think they took advantage of their limited English to pretend they did not understand what I wanted. (2 Hispanic, 1 Asian mover.) One of the Hispanic guys acted like he should not have to listen to a woman. -I am single, and the one paying the bill! ****All three men laughed at the $25/each tip I tried to give them, then told me their "TEEP" should be $10/HR EACH!!!! I told them $10/hr is not a tip. I did feel threatened, and ended up tipping $50/each for a little under 7 hours work. Afterwards, I regretted paying the EXTORTON! We had absolutely nothing lost or damaged, not even my multiple plants. In general: fast, professional, organized, clean, polite. Their English wasn't fluent, but as long as they could understand us and they know what to do - it wasn't a problem. Slow movers. Absolutely no hustle about them. Didn't speak English and took apart furniture that shouldn't have been. They wanted to milk the clock by trying to unwrap and set things up when we kept telling them not to. All boxes were labeled but they just put them all in the living room so we had to sort it out ourselves. When they say "no hidden charges" that doesn't include tip. They demanded we pay more tip and refused to leave until we did. My husband stood his ground and said no until they left after 15 minutes of arguing. We were quoted for 4-5 hours and it took them 6. San Yuan Moving helped me move from Marin County to Berkeley last month. I had few large furnitures, but quite many small kitchen and other items. Their quoted price was excellent, and it took them only two hours to finish packing, moving, and unpacking everything! The two movers were nice and courteous, and they were very careful and gentle with my bed and electronic piano. Extra wrapping ensured that everything was intact. I am giving two stars because Andy was excellent, and the movers did move my limited amount of boxes in the two allotted hours. I would give them one star for these reasons: 1. A divot of wood was removed from my laminate entryway and no one told me. I found out, because I got a splinter in my foot. 2. They used my bathroom without asking, and their usage was noticeable 3. They complained about where the items were located and the path through which to move them 4. They seemed to expect me to help them move the boxes 5. As time elapsed, their pace noticeably slowed 6. Stacking of the boxes in storage could have been done more efficiently to maximize space Andy would receive 5 stars because he clearly explained the charges, scheduling, and confirmed the information. Unprofessional and damaged our floors!! They scratched our hardwood floors, which they denied, even as we watched then forcibly slam their dolly across the wooden doorway. When i asked for them to put covering on the floor, they got mad and started undoing the move. YES, that's right. They started taking the boxes back out of the truck and back into our house. Apparently they were complaining we had a lot of boxes AND they were LATE, so I'm sure they weren't motivated to take the care of moving carefully the rest of the evening. STAY AWAY at all costs!!! Called to schedule my move about a month in advance. We had a 1:00 pm appointment, which was then delayed to 4:00 pm, and then again to a time TBD. They eventually arrived at 7:00 pm. We were mostly ok with it, and appreciated that Andy gave us a heads up about the delays. We only had two disassembled bed frames, two mattresses, and two dozen packed boxes to be moved, so they were able to do the whole thing in about 2 hours, which we really appreciated since it was after dark by the time the finished up. I hired these movers last minute to move my mom into a senior living care facility (already a really hard and emotional day). I normally vet my movers and don't hire unless they have all 5 stars because moving day is important for everything to go smoothly! But it was last minute and they were the only ones with availability. All went well at first - they were early and efficient throughout the job. I gave them a 2 star rating because at the end during payment, I gave them a generous tip yet he told me that I needed to give them more tip. I couldn't believe how rude they were to demand that from a customer. It didn't end with one ask, he kept demanding over and over and would not let up. Once I called in my boyfriend they finally let up. It made me not want to tip them at all and take back whatever tip I did give. So incredibly rude. Just for that I would not hire this company again, nor would I recommend them to anyone. read more
