Nachos have been on my heart for weeks now (I have some decent self control). So, before leaving San Antonio I decided it was time to succumb. After researching the best piled (very important distinction for connoisseurs) nachos, it came to the PigPen for BBQ nachos versus Sanchos for some Tex-Mex nachos. To be candid, PigPen was my first choice, but they didn't open until 3PM and I started my research at 9:15AM... and, at a certain point, the self control runs out. So, Sanchos it was! The place is a neat little dive bar... but with really decent food! It was completely empty at 12PM on a Wednesday. I ordered the pork belly nachos and my friend ordered the pastor torta with a side salad. I'm only going to review the nachos here, because I didn't really try the torta. My focus was deep. When the server/bartender brought out our orders, I was immediately impressed with the appearance of the meal! Again, very decent for a dive bar like Sanchos. The portions were large and quality of ingredients was obviously high. So, I went into my nachos with high expectations on taste and was not disappointed. The flavor was dynamic with sweet pickled onions and creamy refried beans and savory pork belly topped with plenty of gooey white cheese. Very well done!! Ultimately, I give them a 4.5/5 stars. My only suggestion is that they come with a bold sauce of some sort. That's more of a personal preference than a necessity, however. I was only able to eat half and brought the rest home. The reason I suggest a bold sauce is because I opened up the rest when I got home and drizzled it with Sriracha and BBQ sauce and it really kicked up the experience! In sum, these nachos really scratched my itch. The only reasons I won't rush back are because A) I don't live in SA and B) when I'm back in town, I'm trying the BBQ nachos at PigPen. My husband and I met another couple here for drinks and appetizers. We decided to come here because we were told that they had good live music and a laid back atmosphere. Yes, the live music and atmosphere were very nice, however, everything else was a miss! The drinks were poorly made and cheap ingredients were used, none of the mixed drinks tasted good. The beer selection was very limited as well, so either you can order a terrible mixed drink or a generic beer that wasn't quite cold enough. The food was also a major disappointment. Between the four of us, we had a salad, sausage balls, nachos, a gordita, and an order of chips and queso. Let me start off by saying that the salad was the best food item that we had, which says a lot! The sausage balls had a funky taste to them, perhaps it was a spice that none of us cared for.... I'm not really sure but they weren't good. The nachos and gordita both had some kind of a sweet pork on them (they had the same meat and unpleasant flavor). The sauce that the pork was marinated in had a strange taste to it that did not appeal to anyone's palate. Most of the sausage balls, gordita, and nachos were left untouched. The chips and queso were definitely below average. They left a sort of chorizo aftertaste behind. The only food item that was actually enjoyable was the salad but then again, you can't really mess that up too much unless the veggies aren't fresh. The pepper ranch dressing really complemented the salad very well. Overall, we will NOT be coming back due to the terrible food and less than enjoyable drinks. THIS PLACE!!!! OMG!!! Just in case you are scanning reviews quickly, GET THE PORK BELLY TACOS!! Don't think twice, just get them. By far, the best pork belly to ever grace my tastebuds. Great patio with an indoor and outdoor bar, seating inside and on the roof. Live music every night. Ruben V plays every Wednesday and the band is amazing. They are a blues, jazz, rock if I had to describe it. Like a Santana. Music that makes you happy and feel good. If you like tequila, try an avocado margarita. Don't freak out, it's so smooth and fresh and you wouldn't even know it had avocado. They also have empanadas of the day, but usually sell out so order those early. Everything, I mean everything is amazing on the menu. The service is also top notch. I had an incident with another patron that cut in front of me in line and when I mentioned it, he became very ugly and confrontational. The owner, Rob, was near so he was able to get involved and took care of us immediately and very well to get us to stay and help make our night better. It worked and we were glad we stayed! Our waiter was literally clueless he did not know the menu yet he acted like he did and was just guessing at things, We were there for #nationaltequiladay and they had margaritas for 3.00 yet he charged us 2.75 which I'm not complaining about:) the margaritas were good, after one he tells us that there are no more margaritas while the other waitress is handing out margaritas left and right to her tables! It was just a very bad experience with the waiter, I suggest managers or owner not put people on the floor that are new without a partner, and are clueless. I could go on and on about his horrible service, even the tables that were close to us were not happy with him! We still left him twenty percent because I felt sorry for him. I could write a small book about all the things he was telling us! I don't blame him actually I blame management for allowing this to happen. Food came and I was not impressed!! Why do they put sugar on the sausage balls!!! Yuck! The nachos were mostly beans, the street tacos were ok I liked the homemade corn tortillas, that was about it. Ordered to go salsa, chips and pork belly tacos on 9/9/2017 at around 9 pm-ish, total bill $15. Pork bellies $9, chips/salsa $3 and tiny avocado dip $1.50 plus tax. Told the waiter at the window that it's to-go and no onions, asked if he had any pork belly left, he said, "Sure." Wait 30 minutes. Food comes out for dine in, had to send food back for to-go boxes. Wait another 15 minutes. Food comes out cold and loaded with onions. Yikes! Not only is the food loaded with onions that I requested not to have, but I have pork belly meat equivalent to about 2 tablespoons. Two tablespoons of meat for $9? Are you serious? I ask for a refund. I notice the cook giving me the evil eye when I sent the food back. Sorry Buddy, you are a lousy cook. No one in good conscious would serve up food like that for $9. If you knew you were almost out of pork belly, you should have said so. Yet another reason to just stay in and prepare food yourself. My regret is that I didn't take a picture of that SLOP and post for others to see and stay away from. If anyone knows any restaurant devoid of waiters and cooks that don't care for their jobs and need to be relieved of their duties then please let me know so that I can dine or do take out there. Food was good and set at a good price. Drinks, however, were terrible. We got the skinny margarita and it was undrinkable (too much tequila and lime juice causing an unbalanced cocktail). I ultimately discarded the drink. Service was 100% subpar. After sitting upstairs, we were told the area was closed and that we had to act as our own waiter (no signs posted). The bartender then came upstairs to inform us that dogs are not allowed if not a deceive dog (no signs posted); he allowed us to stay. Then the bartender stated the owner called and request we move downstairs. Although we understood the rules, information provided upfront and delivery of the information in a customer-oriented manner goes a long way towards a positive dining experience. Sancho's should focus on providing information of their house rules in a clear manner as well as provide better customer service training in their delivery. If a business brands themselves as dog friendly, the business has a responsibility to clearly display house rules and limitations towards their pet policy. Based on this, I would not recommend bringing your pet, and to steer clear of the skinny margaritas. read more

Coming from Nor-Cal fully expecting a crappy service since it is so close to the closing time(btw we nor-cal folks don't have food past 11:00 PM so the fact there is food to eat is itself is a big deal. What happened after we entered this cute place is surreal. we were greeted with the lady with all smiles at 1:30 AM, 30 mins before closing. Friends had invited me to this place and I had been wanting to check it out. They had Hornitos tequila for $3.50 a shot! That , I liked! We ordered tacos de pollo a la postere . Don't know how much they were but they came in a small paper basket with a small cup of salsa and a slice of lime. They were small corn tortillas filled with chicken and cabbage. Kind of bland and more of an appetizer than an entre. My friends said the portions had gotten smaller and the presentation was downgraded. My niece mentioned to the waitress that one of her mini tacos hardly had any chicken. Waitress, Amanda just shrugged her shoulders and turned her back! Really? Waitress comes back and takes my nieces' water and still some beer in her glass glass and stacks both glasses and was going to take them away. My niece says, wait, I am not through. Waitress does offer to bring a glass of beer but only with the same amount of beer. Really? While I was still eating, male staff from the kitchen comes out and takes my paper basket without even asking if I was through. Staff appeared angry and challenging. We took our drinks outside. I come to this place almost every week because their frozen margaritas are the best that I've had in the city. Yes, I've tried a lot of margaritas here in town. I've brought people who don't prefer frozen margaritas, they like them on the rocks, and convince them to just try one, and of course, they're hooked! Everyone that I've brought here fell in love with the food, margaritas, and music. I hear some complaints when I'm sitting at the bar (usually when they realize, they don't serve miller or bud light- mexican beers only FYI) but the only time I've personally complained are the over-hyped events when it gets too crowded. I personally love coming during happy hour, relaxing by the bar with some Sanchos shrimp nachos, shrimp balls (trust me, just get them), and bistec tacos to go with my frozen margaritas. Oh, and the beans...oh the beans are something else...basically everything that comes out of the kitchen and bar is 5 stars. I seriously wish they would start a catering business so I could have a mini-Sancho pop-up at my wedding. Overall, it's a chill place, with good food, Mexican only beers, and great margaritas. I have received nothing for posting this review. My husband and I have been looking for new small restaurants to experience here in the SA area. I stumbled upon this cute little Mexican taco joint. Smack dab in the middle of SAC neighborhood, I was surprised to see on a Friday early evening the clientele is more mature, working type folks. Pretty much all the seating is outside but the cutest part is an upstairs deck. At 95 degrees outside the breeze was cool and comfortable but I didn't get to sit up there because it was full. Downstairs there is a pecan tree and a fence with greenery on it that gives ample shade. I sat next to the company kitty next to the take out window but it was very pleasant. The wait staff are busting buns in the heat to take care of the patrons and they are very professional and friendly. The tacos are street size and three to a plate which is great as I don't like to over eat. Plenty of add on's are available if you have a huge appetite. The price is very reasonable and happy hour is 4-7. Margarita for $5. Large and delicious. I am excited about this place and look forward to bringing a number of my friends and family here to give it a try. Parking is limited mostly to the street but it is safe and not towable. There are two lots for Sanchos a little ways from the restaurant but you are in competition with the Cove customers. Street parking worked out well. read more

Loved this place. Dive deliciousness. Started with the Rita Rita, a frozen margarita with blended avocado. Was surprisingly yummy! The avocado added some creaminess and had a subtle taste. Chips and salsa app was a little small, but you get to try three different salsas, all unique and bold. Chips were nice and thick, not greasy, fresh. My Tinga street tacos were amazeballs. Smokey, a tiny bit sweet, and full of flavor. Corn tortillas were homemade and hit the spot. Husband had the carnitas, equally amazeballs. Sanchos has such a chill atmosphere, we selected this place for a birthday gathering of about 25 people and the staff was totally accommodating and helpful. We basically had the upper deck to ourselves and the waitress was on point with our orders. Let's not forget the food... I was in town for work & wanted to meet up with my niece & nephews so we chose Santos, since one of my nephews had plans for that already. So, 10 of us (including 2 young boys) arrived sat immediately Good food, good service, cool atmosphere. However, when there was nothing on the menu for the kids, the employees got upset when we got the kids a happy meal from next door. They kept coming to the table trying to take their cups & replace them with theirs that didn't have lids. After we had already experienced a couple of spills. I would think with a $100 bill that they could have looked over 2 happy meals with water. We left and went to the Cove & it was MUCH MORE kid friendly, dog friendly & overall better vibe. read more

Used to like this place for the divey bar it is with adequate tacos and good queso. The service has gotten worse every time I go. Had to walk out last time I went because nobody would acknowledge us despite attempting to call over more than one server. So my party and I sat there and looked up other places to eat at instead and left. They do have good queso but that's about all I'd recommend. It's just okay food. Everything is small servings and nothing special. I used to recommend this place but the service has completely ruined it. This is San Antonio, it's not that hard to find better tacos. read more
