Make sure you register on line and make a reservation. If it's hot out, you'll want to go up the dunes in high crew socks and/or shoes. The sand will be way too hot if you try and do it barefoot. Parking is easy - be sure to pay attention to parking signs. Good work out; kiddies had fun too. read more

I love coming here it gives you an amazing workout. Trust me you will be sore of this! It's fun as well for all ages. I am not a sunny person I hate getting sunburn and if you are like me I wouldn't recommend going out in the strong sun at the dunes you will feel the workout even more intense than it already is but is an amazing workout and get them legs and stomach burning! I love this place. The first time I went, I thought I could run through the sand like it was a piece of cake. Boy, was I wrong. Like everyone else, I was dizzy and almost gagged when I reached the top. And not to mention, I had to catch my breath. So I decided to do the stairs a few times which was not bad at all but you still get a work out as well. Did the sand a few times too. After climbing the stairs to the top, I decided to walk to the beach..(the walk down is prerry cool but the walk up was definitely an exercise) Overall, I give this place 5 stars because it will kick your ass into shape if you go continuosly......I'm going back today but later on because it is too hot right now, lol.... read more

What a workout. Setting up an account on line to make my reservation was easy. I took a screen shot of my reservation, but when I got there, I found out that they require a print out of the reservation. What happened to going green? I have to agree with everyone about how great (i.e.,painful, traumatic, soul searching) workout it is. The one thing I hope everyone remembers is that this is a residential park so please be respectful of the locals. I haven't had any problems but I have heard complaints from locals and non-locals that people can be rude. Also my suggestion for your first time is be humble and walk it to see how it is first, I've taken experienced trail runners here and seen the dune humble them. read more

you might as well call this humbling hill because this sandy hill will humble 97% of the general population. it may not look that hard but until you give it a try you won't know how much of a bitch this hill can be. trying to get up this hill is as hard as sarah palin trying to explain international relations. this was my first time here and i have to say this place is much more difficult than the santa monica stairs. slow and steady is the motto. remember the tortoise my friends. if you try to run up the hill good luck. but i'm going to bet that you can not run all the way. so many have tried and so many have failed. so sad. one thing to i would recommend is that you do this barefoot. i started going up the hill with socks on and by the time i came back down i must have had a cup of sand in each sock. not good. it's already hard enough trying to go up the hill with the sand shifting beneath your feet but to carry an addition pound of sand up the hill is just...well...dumb. i was able to complete ten sets (up and down) and felt pretty good about myself but my legs felt like j-e-l-l-o-o-o-o afterwards. one last thing i must mention is there are some characters that work out here. my favorite was the guy that was...well...basically wearing under armour brand underwear with his ipod shoved in there and some knee high boots (not sure if they were military or not) and a beanie. i'll give you credit that you had the upper body to workout without a shirt but jesus christ buddy this is a family park please put on some shorts. can't you see the kids playing on the other side? in honor of your boldness, i will be sporting some calvin klein marky mark underwear with some steel toe doc martens and a kangol beanie this halloween. read more

This place is awesome. I first discovered this place during a highschool track work out and I've been coming back ever since. I usually ride my bike from Redondo beach pier over to the park, sprint up it a few times and ride my bike back. Very good work out. My favorite thing about this park is running back down the dune once you get to the top. If you run fast enough and jump you can get a bit of a free fall going, very exciting! read more

I'll be honest. I'm not the fittest person in the world. The first time I went up that dune, I got dizzy and almost passed out at the top! My heart was beating too fast! But after going several times, my endurance and strength built up and I actually enjoyed going up and down. It's a different kind of work out to try if you're sick of the gym. read more

Great workout. I must say I really enjoyed the sand dune experience. I've been hearing about it for quite some time and finally decided to give it a try. It was a bit challenging, but I went up like 4 times and we did a few 10 second sprints up. Write the experience I will most definitely be headed back soon. Ok since I didn't see anyone else mention this when I looked I will say it here. The sand part of the park closes at 7pm!!! Yes not 9pm like their sign indicates but 7pm. After 7pm you can still use the stairs but that is all so please keep this in mind when you drive down there like I did at 8 with your kid to workout. You have to sign up online for a time slot unless you are with a child if you are there earlier. It's a cool place but seriously 7pm that is pathetic. I work until then people hello!!!! read more

Crazy good! The Dune is as good as it gets. But listen, be cool. If you read other reviews about homelessness and racism causing the park to close, don't buy it, they are 100% incorrect. The park was closed because Dune visitors were parking on lawns, speeding through the neighborhood and throwing up in peoples yards...yes really. Just be cool, go to the Dune, use it, have fun. Try to remember that people live here. The neighbors have always been great, just don't push them. Or, throw up on their roses. read more

Came here in college and for a great workout, but now with all the regulations and park staff explanation that it was too ghetto and surrounding community complained. Thought I would get a good work out, but had to sit and watch my 12 year old run the dunes alone. Kids under 12 can go any time, while 13 and up must make a reservation. 10 years ago it was a different look feel, and didn't feel ghetto. Not sure what happened since then, but I won't be back. What a waste of a morning for me. read more

This sand mountain proved me that how bad I am out of shape & I'm totally defeated. There were only 4 guys including me this morning & I could only go up 3.5 times! Yes, 3.5 time, no more no less. I used to hike over 10 miles on mountains but this place is totally different. I booked for an hour time slot but already got tired after 20 mins. Great free workout! I finally made it for my first trip to the Dunes even though its walking distance from my house. It was pretty rowded but not overcrowded. Actually having other people there was motivating. For my first time, I went up and down 5 times. I probably could have gone more but I was being semi-lazy and didn't want to be sore the next day :) Anyway- ill definitely be back! This sand dune will kick your butt. It's even nicer now since having to reserve and pay keeps alot of riff raff away.

Be prepared for a nice workout. There are a range of different people coming here. But it is a great early morning or sunset workout.

Although given an hour, I was done after four rounds. Going up was definitely strenuous; every step up meant half step back, due to the sand slide. Even though the weather was relatively cool (60 degrees), I got really hot and sweaty by 10 o'clock so go as early as possible. Parking is not a problem and there is public restroom nearby. By mindful that the sand dune is at a park and not adjacent to a beach (what I had originally thought). There are also stairs aside for people who want additional workout. Oh, by the way, don't let the seventy-year old yogi intimidate you by zooming by you while doing the eagle pose! read more

I came here before all the regulations and it was amazing.you could go up the sand dune for as long as you wanted and could come without booking. I was disappointed to see signs that restricted running and jogging on the stairs and pathways. If you want to walk the stairs only I suggested, I came on a Saturday and there was not enough people and their was plenty of parking and for the stairs you don't have to booked. The playground is also accessible without booking, is a basic playground nothing special. To use the sand dune you have to register online (only), and they ask for personal information. There's also a $1 fee at the entrance when you check in. Trust me $1 is nothing but even if it was 1 penny , I don't think they should be charging, parks are public properties. I tried to register a day before and there was no openings. The place is beautiful, but all the restrictions makes it hard to give it a five stars. All the restrictions have helped keep people away but I guess that's what the residents want. ;( read more

The stars are for underestimating the place when I first set eyes on it and I said to myself that's it? Welp. I definitely put my foot in my mouth because I actually got my ass kicked ascending 100 ft up on pure sand! I loved it! MUST TRY! Few things that you must know before going (this is where they were missing 5 stars) You must first create an account through the link on their site. Reserve a time slot to secure your spot when you get there (I drove 1hr 30 min) and did not know this but I got to try it out. The staff was not pleasant. That's where the missing star comes from. But he's not important. Once you reserve your spot (and I would recommend doing your reservation a day or two ahead because there are limited spot open to get in for your workout) Bring the confirmation number with you because there will be someone waiting by the entrance gate to check you inside for your workout. Bring cash because it will cost you a $1 to get in! read more

Man I love this place! First time there this past weekend; only went up 3 times. Will shoot for 5+ next time. It's an intense workout that'll turn your legs to jello but have no impact on your knees. Really quite an amazing place to train. And if your determination or motivation seems to fade 1/2 way up, just look to your right, it's a National Guard facility. It might not be the Marine or Army Corp, but when I imagine charging the hill with a 80 pound Alice pack on my back, a 800 round a minute M-16 in both hands, the heat & sweat in combat fatigues overalls.... I quit my mental-bitching about my boring civilian job, the pain in my legs, and dug deep. With that in mind it's not hard to reach the top; all the while quite grateful I get to do this "just for fun." read more

If you are brave enough to sled down Sand Dune you are a champ! Always a good work out. There is also a concrete path that you can take on the side of the sand hill without stepping in the sand. That's a nice walk as well. read more

A serious cardio and resistance workout. A couple of friends and I used to go before the reservation system, at least 2 times a week. We'd go up the dune, down the street to the beach, down the beach, turn around, and go down the stairs. Great for people who run track, or someone looking for a challenging workout. read more

Sand Dune Park is the kind of place that makes you wish you lived across the street from it so you could go EVERY DAY. I don't know which was a bigger surprise for me: The gasping for air from the deceptively tough workout or the sense of renewal and rejuvenation that came soon after doing it. The guys manning the Dunes table (where you submit your registration & $1) are really nice & let us use the Dunes as out-of-towners without registering. We could only use it during open hours, however, which are 3-7pm, weekdays. The Dunes are also open longer hours on weekends. A good workout, albeit it with slightly more logistical maneuvering than in the old days. read more
