We went to try Sando Shack around lunch time on a Thursday. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the staff is really nice and welcoming. They were kind enough to let us go through the kitchen area to sit in the outdoor patio area because the weather was so nice. We got the pork katsu, the mushroom katsu, and the curry fries. The food was very flavorful and we especially enjoyed the curry fries! Sando Shack is a unique offering in St. Louis. I tried the Katsu Burger and the Sweet and Spicy Chicken Sandwich. It's best for takeout because there isn't really much seating inside. The service was friendly and quick and while I enjoyed my meal, I found the flavors to be a bit underwhelming. After a couple years of ordering from the food truck and various pop ups I was excited to order from their brand new location. I place a large order for 20 people in my office for lunch and the staff was all so friendly helpful and quick! it only took 30 minutes for them to prepare which was fantastic. My partner and I were excited to give Sando Shack a try but we were unfortunately let down when we stopped in today. We ordered the chicken katsu sandwich, 1 regular and 1 sweet & spicy. As well as some curry fries. The sandwiches were pretty bland and flavorless. Basically just tasted like panko breaded, overly deep fried chicken. The breading had some burnt bits which was not great. The slaw had no significant impact and honestly you wouldn't be able to tell if it was on there or not. The sauce felt very minimal (on both sandwiches) and you can't really taste it. The bread was standard toasted white bread. Overall these sandwiches are nothing special. Fries are fine, but those are pretty hard to mess up. The chicken was pretty juicy and not dry, which is about the only complement I can give. Come on STL we gotta do better. This place has an opportunity to offer something unique to the area and totally misses the mark. Season the chicken and the breading! Make a flavorful slaw that adds a tangy, creamy texture to the sandwich! Develop a sauce that counterbalances the richness of the sandwich and pops! Source a local higher quality bread (there's plenty of places here)! Get some quality control around the food coming out of the kitchen! These are the basics. read more

We arrived at Sando Shack on a Thursday afternoon, parking is pretty easy in the area. The interior has limited seating, so could be crowded during busy times. Once inside we placed our orders. We tried the Pork Tonkatsu Sando and the Chicken Karaage Sando. They were both very flavorful, although the sandwiches are so packed, they can start to fall apart towards the end. The Togarahi fries were solid. Nothing too crazy. The real star of this meal was the curry fries. They were so flavorful and fresh out of the fryer. My boyfriend and i went to Sando shack this afternoon and split the teriyaki chicken wings and the chicken Katsu rice bowl. The wings were a solid 7/10. i liked the sauce but it wasn't anything special. The ranch was fine. The Chicken Katsu Rice bowl was alright. I would give it a 5.8 out of 10 but my boyfriend said he would give it a 7.5/10. perhaps that one is just a matter of taste buds. I think we may come back and try a sandwhich when we are hungrier. These folks know how to do a chicken sandwich right, and a katsu burger! Sando Shack is/was a food truck, but opened a storefront a few months ago. It's really almost takeout only with an order counter, but there is room for about a half dozen people to eat at stool with a counter around the perimeter. The katsu chicken sandwich the wife got was quite large - think two Chick-Fil-A or Popeye sandwiches for volume. First off, it's made from thigh meat, so there's much more flavor in that cut - especially with the soy or whatever it is brined in. It's planko coated, deep fried, and then topped with katsu sauce and cabbage slaw. The bread is a thick, buttered & grilled Texas toast style slice that holds up well to the sandwich's heft. Delicious. Now the katsu burger is just decadent. It's basically the katsu chicken sandwich, but sub out the chicken for a thick (1/3 or 1/2 lb) burger that's coated and deep fried. Mine had no pink inside, which is what I like, but still quite juicy and flavorful. They also add a slice of cheese and tomato with the katsu sauce and cabbage slaw. Oh, and it's on a brioche bun. A rich, sloppy, taste heavy mess. Bot come with fries, which were fried up well. The wife got sea salt, and I got mine with curry powder. It was a nice bit of interest to add. They also had a special that I had heard about, but didn't see on the menu - so I asked and it was available. gyoza wings. They basically took a whole chicken wing, deboned the meaty end, and stuff that with a blend of gyoza pork/cabbage. It's then coated and deep-fried. Both a savory and a soy sauce were provided for dipping. My apologies for now knowing the sauce, but it really worked well to dip the soy and then dip the other sauce before biting. the gyoza and wing worked well together for a flavor special. I was very happy with our food, and will definitely be back again. read more

We did an event in Shaw where they brought their truck out and OMG. Wow. It was SO GOOD. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this will exceed any expectations. The chicken is magically so crispy yet tender, probably the best fried chicken I've ever had. Then they top it with a delicious, sweet sauce and throw some slaw on it? My boyfriend doesn't even like slaw and he was obsessed with the sandwich!! We might have to drive out to their physical location just to get it again, or track down their truck, because we could eat it every day. read more

Today I ordered the fruit sandwich. I wasn't sure what to expect. It was wonderful! It was like a sandwich made from cinnamon bread with whipped cream and strawberries in the middle. I love when I have high hopes and expectations for a restaurant, and they not only meet but exceed my expectations!!!! Again, I lived in Yokohama, Japan for 3 1/2 years. I am very particular about Japanese food as a result. The space is the perfect "whole in the wall" place you would find in Japan. A few counter seats are available for dine-in, so take out is also a good idea. The staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu. We ordered a few sandwiches to try along with the cucumber salad. The salad was crunchy and refreshing with a bit of heat in the dressing. The sandwiches were generous portions of protein with a cool slaw. Hands down my favorite part of the meal were the fries. IKR!?!?! You're thinking how were fries the best part after a tasty crispy sandwich?? They have fry seasonings!!! I got the curry seasoning and . Apparently it's a secret recipe, so I guess I'll have to go back anytime I get a craving for them!! I just couldn't tell the difference between the regular and the sweet and spicy we both got a different Sando and switched halves so that we could each try both Sando - I can't say that I noticed a difference. Went here for a Yelp Elite event! I did not expect the yumminess that came from this food truck! The delicate balance of flavor and proportion was spot on. Sooooo I was long anticipating this place. Knew it was a food truck and was excited to see it open in a permanent, well-accessible location. Let me take you on a journey. First, we will start with the great. The people! So kind and helpful with the menu. The food was good too. Had the mushroom sandwich. Now, we enter a darker area. There's basically nowhere to sit so we took our meal to go and sat outside at the bar next door (in 30 degrees). The price was pretty high for a small sandwich. We waited a good 20 minutes for our food but I think that's because they ran out of ingredients. We saw an uber eats/postmates/food delivery person drop off a schnucks bag of white bread to the kitchen and then our food was promptly served so I think they ran out of bread. I wasn't expecting Union Loafers quality bread from this shack but I was expecting a little higher quality than Schnuck's $1.24 sandwich bread. Overall, I don't regret going but don't see myself returning anytime soon read more

I had Sando Shack when they were a food truck, and I was completely unimpressed and quite disappointed. after how long I waited. i'm not penalizing them for my wait, or even the fact that they had to shut down because of the on and off rain, and I happen to get the last sandwich before the oil was no longer hot enough, but I could tell that, even if I got it under better circumstances, it wouldn't be good I got the fried chicken thigh sandwich, which is their flagship product, and it was greasy, tasteless, and just completely disappointing in every sense of the word. And then what they charge for it... These are chicken thighs, the profit margin is insane, pass some of that onto the customer especially if you're going to serve a product that I will never eat again. again, I feel bad because the people working there are usually very nice but that was one of the worst and most expensive sandwiches (for what it is)I've ever had. I really don't understand why the post-dispatch said they were so good in their coverage of the punk flea market. perhaps that journalist is one of those people who likes bland food. read more

Tried Sando Shack when they did a pop-up at Little Saigon Cafe in the central west end. Got the chicken katsu sando with potato salad and the shrimp katsu sando with chips. LOVE that there's a katsu style food truck in STL! We went to one of their first popup events and were excited to try their "Chicken Katsu Sando" we saw on Instagram. But we got there right before closing and they were sold out so we had to settle for the burger. But it was amazing! Never had a burger deep fried in panko before but I hope to have more. It's topped with slaw, garlic aioli, and katsu sauce. Served on a brioche bun. All burgers should be on brioche, right? Why are we wasting our time with other buns? Still want to try their other stuff, but it'll be hard to pick something else after the burger. read more

Tonight was my first night eating at the truck. I've eaten their food half a dozen or so times from their various pop ups over the last year. I've always been very happy with the sandwiches, and various side items. Even the simple / classic egg sando is a pleasant lunch, especially when paired with the potato salad. Tonight, the food was ever better. I shared the chicken nanban and the pork tonkatsu sandos with my wife. We also had an order of the Korokkee. The meats were perfectly crisp and their seasoning paired really well with the slaw and sauce on the sando. There wasn't any potato salad tonight, but the Korokkee was basically fried mashed potatoes with gooey cheese center (see the photo). Again, an amazing crisp fry on the Korokke. Cant wait to go back and I like them being parked at a good local brewery. There was a line, but it moved quickly. read more
