We ordered the French toast and huevos rancheros they were both outstanding. I love options so on the quevos rancheros I had half red chili half green I would recommend it that way, they're both delicious served with hashbrowns and beans. Road trip through 5 states, means Yelp must be consulted for wonderful stops - and this was a big win - THANK YOU, Yelpers. I never would have stopped here based on curb appeal, and at first wasn't even sure it was open at all. Thankfully, it was, and we stopped - knowing Yelpers are never wrong. DELICIOUS!!!!!! That sums it up. I am a huge huervos rancheros fan. The choice of red or green sauce only stumped me for a second. I always take the spiciest path. What a great kick the green had! These were my favorite huervos I have ever had anywhere. I recommend them fully. Because of the rave reviews of french toast - my daughter had them. She got the small portion, which overflowed a large plate. She loved them. She is not a lover of syrup, and found they simply needed none. Beautiful, as well. My other daughter had the pancakes and sausage - no way could she eat it all. She was happy with it, but it was nothing special - typical and what you expect. I wouldn't waste time on them, with amazing other choices. I fell madly in love with the FAT home made tortilla that filled a plate. I could only make it through a small amount of my meal - but no way was going to leave that tortilla behind. It travelled through 2 more states with me, and served as a wonderful snack. Our service was friendly, and cafe typical. The decor is train themed - which is well suited for the area, as trains continually passed by. The worlds smallest bathroom, with the worlds largest roll of toilet paper is how we summed up the facilities. It served us well, so that was no issue. The decor and curb appeal can't be what drives you, if you want to stop at Plaza Cafe - it has to be the delicious food that you are after. If the rest is of no importance, you will leave extremely happy and ready to take on another 500 miles. You won't leave hungry. Portions are huge and tasty. The side of pancakes consists of two dinner plate sized cakes. The green chili is made with NM Hatch chilies. Not those super mild green chilies you get at your local supermarket. These have some snap to them. The green chili they pour over the burritos is so good it's hard to stop eating it. The service and servers are terrific. They're a little rowdy but there's plenty of signage to warn you. read more

Driving through on a long road trip from L.A. to Oklahoma and needed to stop for gas and breakfast. This place had the best Yelp reviews, so we thought we'd give it a try. We laughed hysterically when we pulled up to this tiny house that looks like an old trailer and figured they're better at cooking than decorating. We love an experience! We were seated very quickly by a most friendly server. The coffee arrived quickly and piping hot. The place was packed with who seemed to be neighborhood locals--that's when you KNOW it's good! I had read that their biscuits and gravy were bomb so we both ordered that, with eggs and bacon. It took a little longer than I wanted for the food to arrive, but hey, they kept my coffee cup full and acknowledged that our order would be up soon. It was well worth the wait. The portions were huge but that didn't stop us from soaking up every bite of food on the plates. On a side note, I saw one review from 12/15 saying this place had just been renovated. That's hard for me to believe because this diner looked like it hadn't seen changes since the 60s. Just goes to show you, never judge a book by the cover. If I'm ever in Gallup at breakfast time again, I will definitely return. read more

A nondescript restaurant located next to the railroad on Route 66. They only serve lunch after 11 am, so it's not an all day breakfast place. The food was delicious. The waitress was not as friendly as I would have liked but she was efficient. She probably realized that I was not a local due to seeing my out of state plates. read more

Now there's a couple of reasons that can happen, it's really broken or they didn't pay their fee to the credit card machine company. Left the big city early morning before dawn, heading home, and figured we'd find a good place to stop for breakfast along the way. Well, Gallup is a small little town and we decided to stop and find the local hangout. This was it, looks like a couple of trailers stuck together, very small and when we walked in, had a few tables with the electric crew and a few town folk. I got the green chili omelet and it was really good, a bit of spice, the cheese was thick and gooey. It was served with hash browns and toast. I just came back from the Phoenix area where locals there had been raving about a certain breakfast place and only politeness kept me from posting: run over to Gallup and see how it's done *right*! I luv that they're open so early in the morning - and the crew here does perky just right: without being obnoxious. I luv that if you're privy to this under-the-radar dining treasure, you are "ïn". Because of all my pics and raves, my friends who are lifelong locals are now in love with Plaza Cafe -- and isn't this what yelp is all about? = ) But they do have curtailed hours (like 1:30 pm closing time) so check out the *correct* times on one of the Quick Tips. The FBI special has been recommended to me, but I have yet to try that and as of rt now, if you're going for the first - or 80th - time: the french toast is where it's at. As we made our way back from Santa Fe to LA, somehow we started talking about steak and eggs. I guess we do talk about food a lot. Anyhow, we were coming up on Gallup just in time for breakfast so we stopped at this dive of a diner. There's no website and no one wrote about steak and eggs as far as we could see, but we were keeping our fingers crossed that a cafe located on Route 66 would have this quintessential road trip grub. And it did! Actually they offer a 6 oz. steak and eggs ($10.95) on their menu, but the on the dry erase board behind the counter was a special combo of NY STEAK, EGGS, HASHBROWNS, TOAST AND COFFEE for $12.95! We all ended up ordering this. The steak was cooked well (didn't matter that we asked for it differently), the eggs were buttery and the hashbrowns were underdone. Our server was raving about their freshly-made FLOUR TORTILLA, so we got one. Not sure why folks are so excited about this thick, flatbread-like "tortilla". It was soft and barely warm. Old-school cafe on Route 66. Yeah, they have some Route 66 memorabilia hanging up in the place, but it doesn't have that typical touristy Route 66 feel to it. Great service. Great food. Ok so here is the thing. This is the worst food I've ever had. There is not one single thing I can say that is positive about the food, or beverage. I've never had such a terrible breakfast in my entire life. The saving grace was the entertainment from the wait staff. Sandra is the sassiest waitress I've ever seen, and it was glorious. Go here? We were traveling through Gallup and needed to stop and have breakfast, so I looked this place up via Yelp. I agree with the three reviews I read, this place looks like a dive from the outside, but it's clean and bright on the inside, and the service and staff are friendly and attentive. I had a sausage and cheese omelette and had them add diced green chilies, hash browns, and a homemade tortilla. Every bite was excellent, but their sausage is exceptional, crispy and just the right touch of spice. The tortilla was more bread like, looked kind of line a pancake, but was so tasty with butter melting all over it when they brought it out. My hubby had the eggs, sausage patties, hash browns and toast. Again, the sausage was absolute perfection, from the way it was cooked to the overall flavor. Probably the best sausage we've ever had at a restaurant. I also ordered a hot Chocolate, best decision of the morning, besides stopping here! Really good hot Chocolate! Fantastic food, great service, and good prices. First time eating here and really enjoyed the food. It is a small, a bit crowded diner space, but we got a table right away. It's definitely a locals diner, as the waitress knew most of the customers by name. I ordered two eggs, hashbrowns, ham, and french toast. They have their own take on french toast. It is extremely large and odd shaped, almost like a pancake with spikes off of it. Maybe it is a pancake with french toast batter? Not sure, but it is delicious. This was another great yelp selection. Stayed in Gallup, NM, next morning, instead of having the hotel/motel breakfast, we decided to eat at Sandra's Place. We were not disappointed. I had the 2 eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. My bride, had the eggs with ham and pancakes. The pancakes covered a plate by itself! The food was great and hit the spot. It got us down the road till lunch. We actually beat some the locals. Glad we did, as it began to fill up as we were leaving. Great place for breakfast! read more
