My friend and I visited this restaurant last night ordered the Special Pork Hock. My hock had a piece of crispy skin the size of a dollar coin. My friend's hock had more skin but it was soft and mushy. The hocks were served on top of sauerkraut that made the meat and skin soggy plus the kraut was bitter. $26.99 each for a disappointing meal. Was told about this place by a coworker. As a lover of German food, I was happy to try it. It is a 45 minute drive from my home so I made an evening out of it. It is a small restaurant. The food was out of this world. Heather, my amazing server knew the menu like the back of her hand. She recommended drinks and appetizers and they did not disappoint. Then the dessert she recommended (chocolate mousse) was over the top. It was so good. I highly recommend this place. The hanger schnitzel was delicious.Spaetzel is home made. We'd been to Sandra's multiple times and have never been disappointed. We went for an early meal today, and the hostess was less than hospitable. We felt unwelcome because we hadn't made reservations, but we were allowed to sit down as long as we could be done within an hour and a half. It was the exact opposite attitude a hostess should show guests. The food gets five stars. Our server gets five stars. The accordion player gets five stars. A lot of the food is great. I would avoid anything pan fried. Sandra fries in olive oil. If you google it, it is well known that olive oil is a dreadful oil to fry in. It is actually harmful to hunan health. Here is an excerpt. "an oil is heated beyond its smoke point, it gives off toxic smoke. Because olive oil has a low smoking point, cooking with olive oil runs the risk of creating smoke that contains compounds that are harmful to human health. You may not even notice that you are breathing in this toxic smoke." We had potatoe pancakes last night that tasted way off. When questioned Sandra got defensive. I was going to suggest she pan fry on canola oil and of course with added butter when making schnitzel. But then again what do I know? I'm just a customer and I was in a German restaurant. read more

We went on schnitzel night, which is Wednesday. Our meals were fantastic and the service was amazing. The restaurant is adorable, with German accents everywhere. The only issue was parking and perhaps that's on us for failing to ask where to park. We parked on a side street a few blocks away. next time we will go on goulash night. Oh. My. Gosh. SANDRA'S IS HEAVEN. When my boyfriend and I first started dating four years ago, he told me it was a Christmas Eve tradition among him and his friends to go to Sandra's for dinner. I tell you what...I'm not a Christmas person (Halloween all the way!), but I look forward to Christmas Eve every year now just so I can eat here and drink my favorite pear schnapps! The German bread, the pretzels, the skillets, the entrees, the desserts, EVERYTHING is good. Be prepared to go into a food coma. Staff always serves with a smile and the restaurant itself is very nice. Menu is reasonably priced, too. Highly recommended. I can only hope that Covid-19 goes away by Christmas Eve so I can enjoy my yearly visit. read more

Had the Mixed European Plate, very agreeable and authentic. Sandra was here socially distancing, but checking on the customer. Awful, maybe the beers are good and that is where they are getting the positive reviews from but the food wasnt good going down and even worse coming back up. I usually have an iron stomach and havent gotten sick for 7 years prior so likely something was tainted- but I would not be going back to have a second chance at that experience. After living in Germany for 17 years, I had high expectations for some great klosse any braten w potatoes and gravy. Well I didn't quite think it was as wonderful as I hoped but a close 2nd. The dumplings were dry and heavy, the sauerkraut fabulous, the schnitzel a bit tough, the beer was quite an interesting selection. The original salad called 'gemischt salat' was always a composed threesome of butter lettuce, cucumber a bit marinated, and sometimes green beans or cold potatoes- it varies. The dressing was a light sour cream n vinegar w seasoning and I was sooo wanting that. My favorites weren't on offer but I'm going to try the Friday sauerbraten- potato pancakes aren't the right accompaniment- a Semmel dumpling or potato goes the best if gravy is offered. The service is very good and the atmosphere is gemultekeit. Closest thing to German food in our neck of the woods. read more

I waxed long and poetic on Facebook about this place, but I'll spare everyone the read. If you're looking for great German food and beer on tap, come here. Iggy will tell you to find a seat anywhere and will be attentive, without the annoying hovering, throughout your stay. He was training tonight and listening to him describe roles and responsibilities demonstrates that he knows what he's doing. I had the Jager Schnitzel with spatzle and fries. When I asked for mayo, he knew exactly what I wanted and it came with the meal. The meal was FANTASTIC and took me back to all the years I lived and worked in Germany. If it weren't for the brighter lights, MLB on the TV, and the fact everyone spoke English, I would have been back outside Heidelberg in a gasthaus. The portions were more than adequate and the prices very reasonable. Wednesday was Schnitzel special night so it was a few bucks cheaper than normal. If you're in the tiny town and craving great German food, stop by and check this place out. They are closed on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. They also have a lunch buffet so give it a shot. read more

We are blessed to have this little German restaurant in our town. Punta Gorda is known for having some very niche dining establishments. Of course, there are the usual tourist traps, the seafood stuff, the tiki bars and those are all fun, but to have an actual German restaurant that serves traditional food? It's very special. Waitstaff is amazing and attentive. It is nearly impossible to get a table here without a reservation in season, the bar is small and cozy but there are only several seats available and they require a reservation as well which I found to be odd as the bar is usually the catchall. The decor is very similar to what you may find in Germany's traditional family restaurant and beer garden establishments. It is about as authentic as you will find here in Florida. They have a nice selection of German beer and the mini bier shots are a must as they taste like the best cream soda you could ever have. The owner has been there every time and she is no nonsense and I imagine she would be quite frightening to work for if you are not good at your job; she made sure we had a great little table and the service was attentive but not intrusive. The food is home cooked comfort dishes. And they do not rush you out the door as they follows a more European dining style and menu. Portions are normal sized and prices are reasonable. read more

The food was tasty and very reasonably priced. My wife's salmon was a little dry, but flavorful. Our kids had the potato pancakes and devoured the whole meal. I had the bratwurst meal with German potato salad and sauerkraut. The potato salad tasted great, but was a little mushier than I normally like. The service (Ignacio) was attentive and overall excellent. The decor is cute. We were there on a Friday evening. There was a gentleman playing the accordion. Ok, what's good; let's see what I can come up with: the place is clean; great rest room cleanliness, and the staff is friendly. But we went there for the food, so here's the not-so-good. We went on a Saturday bc that is the day they have a sauerbraten special; and I LOVE the stuff. Three of us had it and all agreed it was DRY!! Very dry. I rank it about the worst I ever had. The sides of sauerkraut and spatzle were bland even though there was a gravy (which was apparently in short supply). The fourth in our party had a large salad with shrimp which was well over-cooked. We started with cocktails and selected a bottle of wine with the meal which didn't arrive until the waitstaff was reminded. Given our experience, I would not recommend this establishment. read more

Foods: As a fan of European cuisine, I was very interested in trying out Sandra's. I would call their menu 'mainly' German, but they have an excellent selection of pasta, several non-German salads, and a dish I have fallen in love with, their Hungarian goulash. If you're new to this sort of food, I would highly recommend starting with the Mixed Euro plate ($15) which comes with a bratwurst, a pork schnitzel, and a cup of goulash with one side of your choice. This will give you a nice introduction to the menu, and is big enough it could be shared by two if you weren't both starving-hungry. Also: nice selection of apps. Note: If you don't read German, the waitstaff will explain any items on the menu for you. Drinks: Excellent selection of German beers on tap in several styles (pilsner, lager, black lager, doppelbock to name a few). I think they are up to five taps, and a bottle selection numbering around the mid-twenties. Several standard American beers in there too for the Budweiser crowd. Also: ask about their Mug Club (I just joined up.) The MC covers the Celtic Ray Public House and Shorty's Place as well. The wine selection is plentiful without being overwhelming. No hard drinks. Atmosphere: The one thing I noticed more than the decor, was that place is clean. Super clean. Music plays through the service through house speakers, and on weekends the servers wear dirndls (those Octoberfest dresses) Overall: Try it, you won't be disappointed. read more
